Back up your WordPress site, update All in One SEO (AIOSEO) from Dashboard > Updates or Plugins, confirm the installed version and its changelog, then inspect Tools > Site Health. Site Health can reveal unsafe configuration, outdated software, and failed update mechanisms, but it is not a malware scanner or proof that every vulnerability has been removed. For stronger assurance, add a dedicated security scan or qualified security review suited to your hosting environment.
Use this order to update AIOSEO safely
The safest workflow separates an ordinary plugin update from a security investigation. Complete each stage in order:
- Create and verify a recent backup of the database and files.
- Check the requirements for the exact AIOSEO release you intend to install.
- Update AIOSEO through the WordPress dashboard, or use the plugin author’s updater when the plugin came from an external ZIP.
- Confirm the new version, read the matching changelog entry, and test important site functions.
- Review Tools > Site Health, including both Status and Info.
- If the site handles sensitive data, has a history of compromise, or needs formal assurance, run a separate security scan or arrange an expert review.
This sequence gives you a recoverable change, evidence of what was installed, and a realistic assessment of what WordPress’s built-in diagnostics can and cannot establish.

Back up WordPress before changing AIOSEO
WordPress recommends making a current backup before a manual plugin update because an update can fail or expose an incompatibility. A useful backup has two independent parts:

- Files: WordPress core, themes, plugins, uploads, and configuration files.
Store at least one copy outside the web server. Check that the backup completed, record its date and location, and know how to restore it before clicking Update. A backup that was never tested is not a reliable rollback plan. If your host supplies snapshots, take one as well, but do not assume a host snapshot replaces an independently retained database and file backup.
Schedule the update for a period when you can inspect the site afterward. Put a maintenance notice in place only if your site needs one; most plugin updates are brief, but a failed update can leave a plugin partially installed or produce a fatal error. If you use a staging site, update and test there first, then repeat the verified change in production with a fresh production backup.
Check compatibility before installing the release
AIOSEO’s requirements page describes the latest version as requiring WordPress 5.7 or newer, PHP 7.1 or newer, and MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10.4 or newer. Those figures are not a substitute for the requirement attached to a specific release. AIOSEO’s changelog records a later change that matters immediately:

Because version 5.0.2 raised the PHP floor, do not treat the older, general PHP 7.1 statement as overriding the release note. Check your target version’s requirements and your server’s active PHP version in the hosting panel or WordPress Site Health information before updating.
AIOSEO also states that WordPress 5.6 support ended in summer 2025 and that support for remaining WordPress versions below 6.0 would be dropped at the start of 2026. If your site is on an older WordPress release, plan a core upgrade and compatibility test rather than forcing the newest AIOSEO package onto an unsupported platform.

Update AIOSEO from the WordPress dashboard
Method 1: Dashboard > Updates
- Sign in to WordPress with an account allowed to manage plugins.
- Open Dashboard > Updates.
- In the plugins section, locate All in One SEO. Read the displayed installed and available version information.
- Select AIOSEO and choose the available update action, such as Update Now.
- Wait for WordPress to report completion. Do not close the browser or start a second update while the first is running.
- Open the plugin screen and confirm that AIOSEO is active and shows the intended version.
WordPress’s plugin guidance explains that developers publish updates to add features, improve code quality, and keep plugins secure. An update notice means a package is available through the WordPress update channel; it does not mean your entire site has been inspected for compromise.
Method 2: Plugins screen
- Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins.
- Find All in One SEO and expand its update notice if one is shown.
- Review the version details, then select Update now (the exact capitalization can vary with the WordPress release).
- Wait for the success message and verify that the plugin remains activated.
If the update control is missing, refresh the page once and check Dashboard > Updates. A missing notice can mean WordPress has not received update metadata yet, the installed package is not connected to the normal update channel, or the site cannot reach WordPress.org.

What to do when AIOSEO came from a ZIP or another source
WordPress displays an update notice for an externally installed ZIP only when the plugin author includes a built-in updater. If no notice appears, do not repeatedly reinstall a ZIP over the active plugin. First check the package’s documentation or the author’s account area for its updater and license instructions. Confirm that the package is authentic, matches your site edition, and supports your WordPress and PHP versions. Keep the existing backup until the replacement has been tested.
If the external updater fails, use a staging copy to reproduce the problem. Record the exact error, PHP version, WordPress version, and currently installed AIOSEO version before contacting the plugin author or host. Avoid deleting the active plugin as a first troubleshooting step: removal can disable SEO features and may make recovery harder if the replacement package is incompatible.
Confirm the installed version and read its changelog
After WordPress reports success, return to Plugins > Installed Plugins and record the AIOSEO version shown there. Compare it with the release you intended to install; a success message alone does not prove that the expected package is active. Then read the AIOSEO changelog entry for that version.

For the releases listed through October 6, 2026, the changelog describes security-related work in several AIOSEO components. That information tells you why applying the update may matter, but it does not establish that every installation was vulnerable or that an update certifies the site as clean. Use the entry to identify any release-specific compatibility note, migration step, or feature that needs testing.

Test representative public and administrative paths:
- Load the home page, a post, a page, an archive, and a search-results URL.
- Open the editor for a test post and confirm that AIOSEO fields and previews load.
- Check a canonical URL, title, description, XML sitemap, and robots settings that your site depends on.
- Review the browser console and server error log if a page becomes blank, redirects unexpectedly, or returns a 404 or 500 error.
Do not change several plugins at once if you are investigating a regression. Isolating the AIOSEO update makes the cause easier to identify and gives you a cleaner rollback decision.
Review WordPress Site Health after the update
Status: triage the items WordPress can detect
Open Tools > Site Health and select Status. WordPress groups results by severity, commonly showing critical issues, recommended improvements, and passed tests. Read each item rather than dismissing the page after seeing a green result.
Examples of findings include:
- An outdated PHP version or a PHP configuration that no longer receives support.
- Plugins or themes waiting for updates.
- Automatic updates that are unavailable or may not work.
- Background updates that failed or cannot complete as expected.
- An inability to reach WordPress.org, which can prevent update checks and some automated maintenance tasks.
Resolve the underlying cause, then rerun the test. A failed background-update check is different from an outdated plugin: one concerns the update mechanism, while the other concerns installed software. Record unresolved items and their impact instead of treating a recommendation as proof of compromise.

Info: verify versions and configuration
Select the Info tab to inspect technical details such as the WordPress version, active plugins, server environment, PHP version, database information, and whether auto-updates are enabled. Use this view to verify the facts needed for compatibility decisions and to create a concise support report.
Compare the AIOSEO version shown in Site Health’s plugin details with the version on the Plugins screen. If they differ, refresh the dashboard and investigate caching, a failed deployment, or a multisite context before assuming the update is complete.
Understand what Site Health can—and cannot—prove
WordPress describes Site Health as a place for critical information about configuration and items requiring attention. It can surface potential security vulnerabilities or serious performance problems, but it is not a comprehensive malware scanner. A passing status does not prove that malicious files, stolen credentials, vulnerable custom code, or every known plugin flaw is absent.
Use Site Health for routine configuration review: confirm versions, identify pending updates, check PHP support, and diagnose the update path. Treat a security conclusion as a separate question. If you need to know whether an attacker has modified files, planted persistence, exposed credentials, or exploited a vulnerability that Site Health does not test, obtain a dedicated scan or a qualified review.
Choose a dedicated security check when the risk warrants it
A dedicated security process should be selected for the site rather than assumed to be interchangeable with Site Health. Compare options on these dimensions:

For a suspected compromise, preserve logs and a backup before cleaning files. Changing passwords, rotating keys, removing unknown administrator accounts, and rebuilding from a known-good copy may be necessary, but the correct response depends on the evidence and the site’s data obligations. A scanner’s “clean” result should still be interpreted alongside access logs, hosting alerts, and recent change history.
Keep the rest of WordPress current
AIOSEO is only one component of the attack surface. WordPress recommends keeping plugins and themes current for security and performance. In Plugins > Installed Plugins, review every pending plugin update; in Appearance > Themes, review themes; and in Dashboard > Updates, check WordPress core.
Automatic updates can be managed per plugin from the Plugins screen, but their availability and reliability depend on site and host configuration. After enabling them, use Site Health to watch for failed background updates and verify that notifications reach an administrator. Automatic updating reduces delay, but it does not remove the need for backups, compatibility checks, or post-update testing.

Keep administrator accounts limited, use unique passwords with multifactor authentication where available, and restrict file or dashboard access to the people who need it. These controls address risks that a plugin-version check alone cannot.
Troubleshoot common update and security-review problems
No AIOSEO update appears
- Check both Dashboard > Updates and Plugins > Installed Plugins.
- Confirm the site can reach WordPress.org and that a host firewall is not blocking update requests.
- Determine whether AIOSEO was installed from an external ZIP; if so, use its author-provided updater.
- Verify that your account has plugin-management permissions.
The update fails or the site shows an error
- Do not start multiple retries. Capture the error message and note the PHP, WordPress, and AIOSEO versions.
- Check server logs for memory exhaustion, timeout, permission, or PHP-fatal errors.
- Compare the target release’s requirements, especially the PHP 7.4 minimum introduced in AIOSEO 5.0.2.
- Restore the tested backup or hosting snapshot if the site remains broken, then investigate on staging.
A page redirects, returns 404, or loses SEO settings
- Test in a private browser window and clear relevant page or object caches.
- Check AIOSEO redirect rules, permalink settings, and any caching or security layer that rewrites requests.
- Review the 5.0.2 changelog note about a 404 redirect behavior that could cause errors during plugin updates.
- Temporarily isolate other recently changed plugins on staging rather than disabling unrelated production protections without a rollback plan.
Site Health still reports an issue after remediation
- Rerun the test after the underlying change has completed; some results are cached until the next check.
- Read the test’s detail text and follow its specific diagnostic link or recommendation.
- Use the Info tab to confirm that the version or setting actually changed.
- Escalate to your host or a security professional when the finding concerns server access, unexplained file changes, or a suspected compromise.
Post-update checklist
- Backup exists, is dated, and can be restored.
- AIOSEO’s displayed version matches the intended release.
- The release changelog was read, including security and compatibility notes.
- Front-end pages, search, redirects, sitemap output, and editor fields work as expected.
- Site Health Status has no unexplained critical issue.
- Site Health Info confirms supported PHP, WordPress, database, and plugin versions.
- Other plugins, themes, and WordPress core have been reviewed for pending updates.
- Automatic-update failures or blocked connections to WordPress.org have been investigated.
- A dedicated security scan or expert review is scheduled when the site’s risk or compliance needs exceed Site Health’s scope.
Following this checklist leaves you with a documented update and a more honest security assessment: AIOSEO is current for the chosen release, WordPress configuration problems are visible, and any malware or vulnerability question that requires deeper inspection has been assigned to an appropriate tool or professional.
