A connected product’s new display name does not automatically require a Salesforce change. First obtain the vendor’s migration notice and compare the old and new API hostname, path, OAuth authorization and token endpoints, redirect URI, scopes, API version, authentication method, credentials, and retirement dates. Then update only the Salesforce setting that actually changed, test in a non-production environment, and cut over with a rollback plan.
What a product rename does—and does not—change
Marketing names and technical identifiers are separate. A vendor can rename its product while keeping the same API hostname, resource paths, OAuth client registration, scopes, credentials, and API version. In that case, changing Salesforce metadata or rotating secrets creates unnecessary risk and may interrupt a working integration.
Conversely, a rebrand may accompany a new domain, API gateway, OAuth application, callback URL, authentication scheme, or versioned path. Treat the rename as a trigger for an inventory and vendor confirmation, not as proof that every identifier changed.

Ask the vendor for a dated migration notice that lists:

- Old and new API base URLs, including host, path, port, and TLS requirements.
- OAuth authorization and token endpoints.
- Every redirect or callback URI that must be registered.
- Required scopes, audience values, grant types, and API versions.
- Whether client IDs, client secrets, signing keys, or certificates remain valid.
- Production and sandbox hosts, cutover dates, and decommission or sunset dates.
- Whether users must authorize again and whether existing refresh tokens survive.
Do not infer a new URL from the new product name. Use the vendor’s exact values and update the narrowest configuration that serves every consumer.
Inventory every place the integration is configured
Before editing anything, map where Salesforce or an integration layer stores vendor-specific values. Include production, sandboxes, scratch orgs, and middleware separately; a test environment may point to a different host or client registration.
Salesforce configuration to inspect
- Named Credentials and External Credentials: callout URL, authentication protocol, principals, scopes, certificates, and custom headers.
- Apex: hard-coded URLs, endpoint fragments, API versions, request headers, and references to a Named Credential.
- External Services: imported OpenAPI definitions, service endpoints, and authentication mappings.
- External data sources: endpoint and authentication settings used by external objects.
- Connected apps or External Client Apps: consumer key, secret, callback URLs, scopes, policies, and flow settings.
- Remote Site Settings: domains used by callouts that do not use a Named Credential.
- Installed-package settings: custom metadata, custom settings, or package-specific connection records.
- Salesforce URLs used as an identity provider: My Domain, Experience Cloud, or custom login URLs referenced by a relying party.
Configuration outside Salesforce
- Middleware connection records and environment variables.
- Vendor-managed callback registrations and allowlists.
- DNS, firewall, proxy, certificate, and IP allowlist rules.
- Deployment manifests, secret stores, CI/CD variables, and runbooks.
Record each value, its environment, owner, last verification date, and downstream consumers. This prevents an endpoint change in one org from leaving a second org or middleware route broken.

Map the vendor change to the Salesforce field that needs editing

When the external API hostname changed
A Salesforce Named Credential stores a callout URL and authentication parameters separately from the code that invokes it. Salesforce explains that this separation allows an administrator to change an endpoint without editing every Apex callout that references the credential. The current Named Credential framework supports Apex callouts, external data sources, and External Services; Salesforce recommends it over legacy Named Credentials, which are deprecated and no longer enhanced. Update a shared Named Credential
- Open Setup and search for Named Credentials.
- Identify the credential used by the integration and confirm its environment and consumers.
- Compare the stored URL with the vendor’s migration notice, including scheme, hostname, path, port, and API version.
- Edit the endpoint and any authentication parameters that the vendor explicitly changed.
- Review the associated External Credential, principals, permission sets, certificates, and custom headers.
- Save the record, then run a controlled callout from a sandbox or other non-production environment.
If Apex uses a reference such as a Named Credential callout endpoint, changing the shared credential can update all consumers without code edits. Hard-coded URLs, imported OpenAPI definitions, Remote Site Settings, and middleware still require their own updates.
Check TLS, DNS, and network dependencies
A new hostname can require a new certificate chain, DNS resolution, proxy rule, firewall allowlist, or vendor IP range. Confirm that the URL uses HTTPS and that the certificate presented by the new host is trusted by the calling platform. A successful DNS lookup does not prove that authentication or resource paths are correct.
If Salesforce’s own My Domain URL changed
Salesforce states: “When your My Domain login URL or site login URL changes, named credentials that use that URL stop working.” Follow the documented procedure at Update Named Credentials After a My Domain Change: find credentials containing the old Salesforce URL, replace it with the new URL, save, trigger a callout, and reauthenticate if Salesforce prompts you.
This case is different from a vendor product rename. If Salesforce acts as the identity provider, also validate the new URL’s /.well-known/auth-configuration, update relying parties with changed OAuth endpoints or JWT audience values, and verify the selected login method. When the OAuth callback or redirect URI changed
The callback URL is the OAuth redirect URI. Salesforce compares the value supplied at runtime with the configured callback URL list; it must match a saved value. Redirects that carry access tokens must use HTTPS or a custom URI scheme.
Coordinate both sides of the change
- Obtain the vendor’s exact new redirect URI, including capitalization, path, port, and trailing slash.
- Confirm whether the vendor allows multiple callback URLs during a transition.
- In Salesforce Setup, open the relevant connected app or External Client App and edit its callback URL configuration.
- Register the same URI in the vendor’s client application record.
- Save both systems, start a fresh authorization, and verify that the returned authorization code is exchanged successfully.

A callback change is independent of an API base URL change. It does not, by itself, establish that the consumer key, secret, scopes, token endpoint, or existing refresh tokens changed.

Salesforce says connected-app creation is restricted as of Spring ’26 and recommends External Client Apps for new work. Existing connected apps may continue to be used, but Salesforce’s identity and access documentation says connected apps are planned to lose support in Summer ’27. They may continue working after that point, but Salesforce will no longer fix bugs or support their integrations and authorization flows. Release timing is subject to change, so recheck the current Salesforce release documentation before scheduling a migration. See Salesforce identity and access release documentation.

Eligible in-place migration
For an eligible connected app, Salesforce’s migration interface can create an External Client App based on the existing configuration. Salesforce says the consumer key and secret are preserved and refresh tokens remain valid for eligible migrations. The migration is performed in the Salesforce UI; the original connected app becomes read-only. Do not delete the original app while the integration is being validated.
When migration is blocked
Eligibility exceptions include User Provisioning, a custom Apex handler, Canvas, Dynamic Client Registration, certain SAML encryption configurations, and some notification subscriptions. Salesforce also warns that External Client Apps do not support the username-password flow and that the migration process does not detect its use. Verify the actual grant type in code and logs rather than relying only on the migration screen.
Creating a new External Client App
If the app is ineligible or uses an incompatible flow, create a new External Client App with equivalent settings, then update the integration to use its consumer credentials. Plan for authorization and rollback because a new client can invalidate assumptions about refresh tokens, callback registration, scopes, or secret storage.

Salesforce’s eligibility rules and procedure are documented at Migration eligibility and procedure. Salesforce Developers also states, “Creating connected apps is restricted as of Spring ‘26,” in its OAuth and connected apps guidance.

Production and sandbox endpoint differences
Never copy a production OAuth endpoint into a sandbox without checking the vendor’s environment model. Salesforce supports login.salesforce.com for production authorization and test.salesforce.com or a sandbox My Domain URL for sandboxes; supported OAuth flows may also use My Domain, Experience Cloud, or custom URLs. OAuth endpoints require HTTPS. The endpoint reference is at OAuth endpoint reference.
For each environment, document the Salesforce authorization host, vendor API host, client registration, callback URI, scopes, and secret owner. A test that succeeds against a vendor sandbox does not prove that production DNS, permissions, rate limits, or data paths are correct.
Validate the change before production cutover
Use a sandbox or another non-production endpoint wherever the service supports it. Validation should cover both configuration and behavior.

- Test fresh authorization: start a new OAuth authorization and confirm that the browser returns to the exact registered callback.
- Test token exchange: check authorization-code exchange, client authentication, scopes, audience, and token expiry.
- Test renewal: if refresh tokens are used, perform a refresh and confirm that the resulting access token works.
- Test representative callouts: exercise read, write, pagination, error handling, and any webhook or asynchronous operation the integration relies on.
- Check permissions: verify the integration user, permission sets, connected-app policies, External Credential principals, and vendor-side roles.
- Compare logs: capture request host and path, status code, correlation ID, and sanitized error details without recording secrets or tokens.
- Communicate reauthentication: notify users before rollout if the provider will display a consent screen or require login again.
After a Salesforce My Domain update, Salesforce specifically instructs administrators to trigger a callout and reauthenticate as needed. Include that step in the production checklist rather than assuming that saving the credential proves it works.
Diagnose common failures

Plan a safe rollout and rollback
Before the change
- Export or record the current endpoint, callback, scopes, app policy, and credential ownership without exposing secrets.
- Identify every Salesforce org, middleware route, scheduled job, webhook, and user-facing authorization flow.
- Obtain the vendor’s sunset date and support contact for the migration.
- Define success criteria: fresh authorization, token refresh, representative API operations, and acceptable error rates.
During cutover
- Deploy configuration changes in the approved order, keeping code and credential changes as separate as practical.
- Monitor authentication and callout logs with correlation IDs.
- Keep the old route available only for the vendor’s documented transition window; do not leave obsolete credentials active indefinitely.
- Tell users exactly when consent or login may reappear.
If rollback is required
Restore the previous endpoint or app configuration only if the vendor still supports it and the old credentials have not been revoked. If a new client was created, preserve its records and document which tokens were issued. A rollback cannot recover a provider-side hostname that has already been retired, so confirm the vendor’s rollback window before production deployment.
Operational checklist
- Vendor migration notice obtained and dated.
- Old and new API hosts, paths, versions, OAuth endpoints, scopes, callback URI, credentials, and sunset dates compared.
- All Salesforce and external configuration locations inventoried by environment.
- Named Credential or External Credential updated only where required.
- Hard-coded URLs, External Services definitions, external data sources, Remote Site Settings, and middleware reviewed.
- Connected app versus External Client App decision documented, including flow compatibility and migration eligibility.
- Sandbox authorization, token refresh, and representative callouts passed.
- Production users informed about any reauthentication.
- Monitoring, rollback owner, and vendor escalation path assigned.
