To update a router safely, first identify its exact model, hardware revision, and purchase region. Then use the update check in the manufacturer’s app or web interface when available; otherwise download the matching firmware file from the manufacturer and upload it through the router’s administration page. Keep the router powered while it applies the firmware and restarts.
The update is not verified when a progress bar reaches 100 percent. After the router comes back online, sign in again, open its firmware or status page, and read the installed version. Compare that version with the release listed for the same model, hardware revision, and region.
What to confirm before downloading anything
Router firmware is device-specific. A similar product name is not enough to identify the correct file. Before opening a download page, collect the identifiers shown on the router’s label or in its administration interface.
- Model: Record the complete model name and number, including characters that distinguish a variant or product generation.
- Hardware revision: Look for a value such as “Ver,” “Rev,” or “H/W.” Two units with the same retail name can require different firmware.
- Purchase region: Firmware can be tied to the country or regional edition in which the router was sold. TP-Link cautions that firmware for different purchase regions may not be interchangeable.
- Current firmware: Note the version currently shown in the app or web interface. This gives you a baseline for verification.
Open the manufacturer’s support page for that precise combination of model, hardware revision, and region. Do not use an image from an unrelated download page or select a file merely because the file name looks close. If the release notes warn about a configuration reset or other compatibility change, read them before starting. Some TP-Link releases, for example, can reset router settings.

Have a reliable power source and enough time for a restart. Internet access can disappear temporarily while the router applies firmware. A wired connection can make a manual upload more dependable: NETGEAR recommends connecting the computer to the router by Ethernet for that workflow. Ethernet is useful, but the instructions do not establish it as a universal requirement for every model.
Choose the update route your router supports
Manufacturers use different labels and capabilities. The exact model’s supported workflow takes priority over any general preference.
| Route | What you do | When it is available | Advantages | Checks and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Online or in-app update | Ask the router’s app or management page to check and install a release. | Models with a cloud-connected or built-in update check. | No local firmware file is needed; some interfaces offer automatic updates or scheduling. | Menu names differ. “No updates found” means the check found no newer version through that service, not that every file on every regional support page is identical. |
| Manual upload | Download the firmware for the exact device, then select the file in the administration page and upload it. | Models without an online update service, or when the manufacturer directs you to use a local file. | Works without a cloud update option and lets you install a specifically identified release. | You must validate model, hardware revision, region, file format, and any extraction instructions. An incorrect image can fail to install or make the device unusable. |
HUAWEI documents checking through its AI Life app or web management page. TP-Link describes both app and web options for routers that support its cloud service, and manual upload for routers that do not. NETGEAR documents a model-selection, download, and administration-page upload sequence. These examples show the pattern, not a universal menu path.

- Join the router’s network. Connect your phone or computer to the router’s Wi-Fi or, where practical, Ethernet. Open the manufacturer’s app or the router’s web management address and sign in with an administrator account.
- Open the update screen. Look for a menu named Firmware Update, Router Update, System Update, or a close variation. It may be under a status, system, maintenance, administration, or advanced section. The label and location are model-specific.
- Run the update check. Select the command that checks for new firmware. If the interface displays a version number, release date, or release notes, read that information before accepting the installation.
- Start the installation. Choose Update, Install, or the equivalent command. Confirm any warning about a restart, temporary loss of internet access, or a settings reset.
- Leave the router alone while it works. Do not close the management session to operate another setting, unplug the router, disconnect the device that is performing the update, or press reset. The router may show a progress indicator and then restart; both actions are normal parts of many upgrade flows.
- Wait for the network to return. The Wi-Fi name, wired connection, or internet service may disappear while the router reboots. Wait until the router has finished restarting before trying to sign in again.
Some models let you enable automatic firmware updates or schedule installation during a period when the network is idle. Use those controls only after confirming what the setting does and whether it can restart the router at the selected time. Automatic scheduling is an option on some interfaces, not a feature that every model provides.

How to install a downloaded firmware file
1. Select the exact support-page entry
On the manufacturer’s support site, choose the complete model designation, then select the listed hardware revision and the region that matches the router’s purchase edition. TP-Link specifically warns that hardware revisions and regional variants matter. If the support page offers several files, use the release that the manufacturer identifies for that exact device rather than the newest-looking file for a related model.
2. Read the release notes
Check prerequisites, installation directions, and any warning about settings. A release can change defaults or reset the configuration. If the notes require a particular sequence, file format, or minimum existing version, follow those instructions instead of applying a generic procedure.
3. Download and prepare the file
Save the file from the official support page. If it arrives in an archive, extract it exactly as the manufacturer instructs and identify the firmware image inside. Do not rename it unless the instructions say to do so, and do not substitute an image from a third-party repository or a different regional listing.
4. Connect to the administration interface
Connect the computer to the router’s network and sign in to its management page. For a manual upload, a direct Ethernet connection is a sensible choice because it avoids relying on the wireless link during the transfer; NETGEAR recommends that arrangement. The supplied manufacturer procedures do not make Ethernet mandatory for every router, so follow the requirement stated for your model.

5. Open the manual upgrade control
Find Firmware Update, Router Update, System Update, or a similar page. Choose an option such as Manual Update, Browse, Choose File, or Upload. The wording and page hierarchy vary by product.
6. Select and upload the image
Choose the prepared firmware file and confirm the upload. The router may validate the image before showing an Upgrade, Apply, or Install button. If it rejects the file, stop and recheck the model, hardware revision, region, archive extraction, and release prerequisites; do not force the upload.
7. Start the upgrade and wait
Accept the confirmation prompt. Keep the router powered and leave the administration page alone while the image is transferred, written, and applied. The router may restart automatically, and the internet connection may drop until the process finishes. Do not unplug the router, interrupt the browser session by changing settings, or press its reset button during this stage.

What happens during the restart
A restart is expected in the HUAWEI, NETGEAR, and TP-Link procedures. Indicator lights can change, Wi-Fi can vanish briefly, and a browser can report that the page is unavailable. Those symptoms do not by themselves indicate failure. Wait for the router to complete its restart and for the network to reappear before opening the management interface again.

Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
Do not use the temporary loss of internet access as a signal to remove power. Interrupting an in-progress firmware write can leave the router unable to boot. If the manufacturer displays a specific progress or completion message, follow it; otherwise, wait until the device has clearly restarted and accepts a new management connection.
Verify that the new firmware is installed
- Reconnect after the restart. Rejoin the router’s Wi-Fi or reconnect the Ethernet cable once the network is available.
- Sign in again. Open the manufacturer’s app or web management page. A restart can end the previous session, so authenticate again if prompted.
- Return to the status or firmware page. Open the same area where the update was checked. Read the installed firmware field rather than relying on the earlier progress message.
- Record the displayed version. Copy the complete version string, including build or suffix information when shown. D-Link’s manual-upgrade instructions explicitly tell users to check the version displayed in the interface after the update.
- Compare like with like. Compare that value with the release shown on the official support page for the same model, hardware revision, and purchase region. A version that looks newer or older in isolation is not enough if the support-page entry belongs to another variant.
The version shown after the reboot is the concrete confirmation that the router is reporting the installed firmware. Keep that value with the date of the update so you can identify what changed if a later troubleshooting problem occurs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the router says no update is available
An online check that reports No updates found, You are up to date, or similar wording means that the router’s check found no newer version available through that service at that time. HUAWEI describes this as the router already being on the latest version offered by its check, and Linksys uses the same interpretation for its “No updates found” message.
If the version shown in the router appears behind a version on the manufacturer’s website, verify the support-page selection before doing anything else. Confirm the complete model, hardware revision, and purchase region. A page for a similar model or another regional edition can list a different release. Also confirm that you are reading the current version field in the administration interface rather than a cached download page or an old saved screenshot.

Troubleshoot a manual update that did not appear to install
The upload was rejected
Stop rather than trying random files. Check that the download matches the exact model and hardware revision, that its regional designation matches the router, and that any archive was extracted according to the manufacturer’s directions. Read the release notes for prerequisites or restrictions. A rejected image commonly indicates a mismatch or an unsupported file format, not a reason to bypass the validation.
The router restarted but shows the old version
Do not immediately repeat the upload. First confirm that the router actually completed the restart, then reopen the firmware page and read the installed version. Recheck that the file was intended for this device and that the update command reached its final completion stage. If the support page does not list that release for the same hardware and region, the apparent discrepancy may be an identification error rather than a failed installation.
The management page is unavailable
Wait for the restart to finish, reconnect to the router’s network, and sign in again. A temporary unavailable page during the upgrade is expected. Avoid removing power while the router may still be applying the image. If the interface remains unavailable after the device has had time to restart, use the manufacturer’s model-specific recovery instructions rather than improvising another firmware file or reset sequence.
The internet connection has not returned
First establish whether the router is still completing its restart by checking whether its network is visible and whether the management page opens. Once the firmware page is accessible, verify the installed version and inspect the router’s status information. Only after confirming that the update is complete should you move to ordinary network troubleshooting.
Automatic updates versus manual control
Automatic updating is convenient when the model supports it and may include a schedule so installation occurs during an idle period. Manual updating is preferable when the manufacturer directs you to use a local file or when you need to deliberately select a release identified for a particular hardware and regional variant. Neither route is universally better: the deciding factor is the supported workflow for the exact router.
