Update your router using the manufacturer’s instructions for its exact model and hardware revision, then turn off internet-facing remote administration if you do not need it. Firmware updates may address security vulnerabilities, while remote management can expose the router’s configuration interface through its internet-facing (WAN) connection. The exact menus and update method vary by device.

Before you begin: identify your router

Find the router’s manufacturer, exact model number, hardware revision, and current firmware version. These details are often printed on a label on the device or shown in its administration interface or app. Use them to locate the manufacturer’s support page, manual, and current update instructions for your specific router. The FTC recommends checking for updates and notes that the manufacturer’s website may provide them: FTC: How to Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network.

Read the release notes and update directions before proceeding. If the router supports saving a copy of its configuration, consider doing so first; whether that option exists and how to use it depends on the model. Do not use firmware intended for a similar-looking router or a different hardware revision. General router guidance describes both built-in update checks and manual firmware uploads, but there is no safe menu sequence that applies to every device: CISA: Securing Wireless Networks and Consumer Reports: How to Update Your Router Firmware.

Update the router firmware

Use the update method documented by the manufacturer. Depending on the router, that may be a built-in check in the local administration interface or app, or a firmware file downloaded from the manufacturer and uploaded through the interface. Follow the device’s instructions rather than assuming that labels, steps, or available features are the same across routers.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  1. Open the manufacturer’s support instructions. Confirm they match the exact model and hardware revision.
  2. Choose the documented update method. If the router has a built-in firmware check, follow the manufacturer’s directions. If it requires a manual upload, download the file for the exact device and revision and use the specified upload process.
  3. Let the update finish. Follow any instructions about power or connectivity during installation. Wait for the router to restart if directed.
  4. Check the installed version. Return to the firmware or status screen and confirm the version shown, using the manufacturer’s instructions if the location is unclear.

Keep firmware current because updates may address security vulnerabilities. The FTC recommends checking for updates; CISA also advises upgrading router firmware. See FTC home Wi-Fi guidance and CISA wireless-network guidance.

Disable remote administration you do not need

Sign in to the router’s local administration interface or open its management app, then look for settings that allow administration from outside your home network. Depending on the device, the option may be called Remote Administration, Remote Management, Remote GUI, or Web Access from WAN. Check the manual if you cannot tell whether a setting exposes the administration interface to the internet.

Turn off the internet-facing remote-management option if you do not need it, then save or apply the setting as directed. CISA warns that remote management may let intruders reach router configuration through the WAN interface. The FTC’s advice is: “If you won’t use remote management, it’s best to disable it.” Read CISA’s guidance and the FTC’s advice.

Do not assume app or cloud management is the same setting

A vendor app or cloud service may manage the router differently from a web administration page exposed directly on the WAN. Review the router’s documentation and settings to understand which access method a control affects. Do not treat an app’s availability—or the presence of a remote-management toggle—as proof that every form of external administration is enabled or disabled.

Check remote firmware upgrades separately

If the router has a separate option for remote firmware upgrades, disable it if you do not need it, following the manufacturer’s terminology and instructions. CISA warns that this feature may make the router listen for firmware-upgrade traffic on the WAN interface. This setting is distinct from keeping firmware updated through a supported local or vendor-managed process; disabling remote upgrades does not mean you should stop applying security updates. See CISA’s router guidance.

If you need remote administration

Some device documentation describes controls such as limiting remote access to specified source IP addresses or networks. These controls are not available on every router, so confirm their behavior in the manual before relying on them. If you must keep remote administration enabled, restrict it to trusted devices or networks where the router supports that approach, consistent with CIS guidance on securing network devices.

If you cannot find the setting or update control

  • Check the manual or support page for the exact model and hardware revision; menu names and locations vary.
  • Look in the local web interface and the manufacturer’s app if the router supports both, but verify what each control actually manages.
  • If the router has no remote-management option, do not assume it is exposed; consult the manufacturer’s documentation for how administration access works.
  • If the manufacturer’s instructions do not establish that an update or control applies to your device, do not substitute firmware or steps for another model.
