Use NVIDIA’s official app or driver selector, choose the package that matches your exact GPU and operating system, and let the installer finish without competing background updates. If a Windows installation fails, reboot first. Then retry with all GPU-using programs closed; for a persistent failure, NVIDIA’s documented recovery path is an administrator-launched Custom (Advanced) install with Perform a clean installation selected, followed by another reboot.
Before you update: identify the right driver
NVIDIA does not publish one driver package that fits every GeForce card and operating system. The correct download depends on the exact GPU model, Windows edition or Linux distribution, and the driver branch offered for that combination. Start by confirming those details instead of searching for a version number mentioned in an older article.
Find your GPU model in Windows
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters. The NVIDIA entry shows the installed GPU model.
- Open Settings > System > About to confirm the Windows edition and system type. Windows 64-bit is standard on current PCs, but verify before downloading.
You can also press Win+R, enter dxdiag, and check the Display tab. If Device Manager shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows may be using a fallback driver; identify the physical card from the computer’s documentation before selecting a package.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Gather the details before downloading
- Record the exact GPU name, including any desktop, laptop or workstation designation.
- Note the operating-system edition and architecture. A package for a different Windows release is not automatically interchangeable.
- On Linux, record the distribution and release, the kernel context used by that distribution, and whether the machine needs a desktop or data-center driver branch.
- Keep the installer error text, if you are replacing a failed installation. It can help support distinguish a selection problem from a system-state problem.
These checks prevent a common mistake: choosing a newer-looking package for a similar card. Version numbers alone do not establish compatibility.

Use NVIDIA’s current official routes
NVIDIA’s GeForce-facing update route is the NVIDIA App. It is designed to keep a compatible PC up to date with the Game Ready and NVIDIA Studio driver families. Download the app only from NVIDIA’s own product page, then use its driver section to see packages offered for the detected hardware.
For manual control, use NVIDIA’s official driver selector. Select the product family, exact series, GPU model, operating system and language shown by the form, then download the resulting installer. Do not substitute a package for a similar-looking card or a different Windows release. Driver availability and supported options can change, so the selector is more reliable than hard-coding a version in a guide.
NVIDIA App or manual download?
Both routes obtain an official driver. The practical difference is how much of the selection and update process you delegate to the app.
| Route | Best for | What you control | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA App | Users who want update notifications and an in-app workflow | The driver family and installation choices exposed by the app | The app still depends on a compatible GPU, operating system and a functioning Windows installation |
| Manual driver selector | Administrators, offline workflows and anyone who wants to choose the package directly | Every selector field and the downloaded installer | You must identify the hardware and operating system correctly |
The app is convenient when it detects the hardware correctly and the PC has a normal internet-connected Windows setup. The manual route is useful when you need to download once, retain the installer, or make the selection yourself. Neither method bypasses compatibility requirements: the package still has to be offered for the actual GPU and operating system.
Neither method is a universal winner. Choose the route that matches your need for convenience or control, but always install only a package listed for the actual GPU and operating system.
Game Ready versus Studio drivers
NVIDIA presents two GeForce driver families: Game Ready and Studio. The choice should follow the work you do and the options shown for your hardware, not a blanket claim that one branch is faster for everyone. A gaming-focused system may choose the Game Ready option displayed by NVIDIA; a system centered on supported creative applications may choose Studio. If you regularly alternate between games and creative work, select the branch that best matches your primary workload and change branches later through the same official route if your needs change.
The available branch, release cadence and supported GPU list are determined by NVIDIA. Do not install a branch that the selector or app does not offer for your card and operating system.

Prepare Windows for an update
Preparation reduces the chance that another process will hold a driver file open. Save documents and close games, video editors, media players, browsers playing video, overlays, GPU monitoring utilities and overclocking tools. If Windows has already requested a restart, complete that restart before launching NVIDIA setup. Do not begin while Windows Update is downloading or applying a display driver.
Keep the downloaded installer in a known folder and avoid running multiple copies of it. If the computer is used for important work, record the current driver version and create a practical recovery plan before changing it. The update itself may briefly flicker the screen; that is different from a sustained failure after setup ends.
How to perform a normal Windows update
A normal update is appropriate when the current driver works and you are replacing it with a newer compatible package.
- Save work and close optional software. Close games, video editors, browsers playing video, GPU monitoring or overclocking utilities, and other 3D-accelerated programs. The display may flicker or go blank briefly while the driver is replaced.
- Download the matching package. Use the NVIDIA App or the official selector. Keep the downloaded installer in an easy-to-find folder.
- Start the installer. Accept the license and follow the components offered. Unless you are recovering from a failed installation, the normal installation choice is sufficient.
- Allow setup to complete. Do not shut down the computer, run another graphics installer or repeatedly launch the package while it is working.
- Restart Windows. Reboot even if the installer does not insist. This loads the new display driver and completes services that may not be replaced until startup.
- Verify the result. Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, open the NVIDIA device’s Properties, and inspect the Driver tab. You can also open the NVIDIA App and confirm that it reports the installed driver.
If the device is listed normally and the application reports the expected package after the restart, the update completed its basic checks. If the adapter has an error indicator, the screen remains unstable, or the installer reports failure, move to the recovery sequence rather than repeatedly launching the same package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat to do when the installation fails
Read the installer’s message, but do not jump immediately to deleting system folders or editing the registry. NVIDIA’s troubleshooting sequence begins with a clean system state and another attempt.
1. Reboot and retry
Restart Windows, then run the installer again. A reboot clears a pending display-driver replacement and releases files held by another process. Before retrying, close monitoring and tuning utilities, browsers, media players, games and other applications that use hardware acceleration.
2. Check whether Windows Update is installing a driver
Installation can fail while Windows Update is actively downloading or applying a graphics driver. Open Settings > Windows Update and check for an installation in progress or a restart request. Let that operation finish, restart when Windows asks, and only then run the NVIDIA installer. Starting two driver installations at once can leave setup in an indeterminate state.

3. Use NVIDIA’s Windows clean-install procedure
NVIDIA documents a manual clean installation as a recovery procedure when the app-based or ordinary installation does not succeed. It removes the previous NVIDIA driver components selected by the installer before placing the new package.
Recommended Free Tools
- Download the package that matches the GPU and Windows version.
- Close all open applications, especially GPU monitors, tuning tools, browsers, video players and 3D-accelerated software.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and choose Run as administrator.
- When setup asks for the installation type, choose Custom (Advanced).
- Enable Perform a clean installation.
- Continue through the component choices and let setup finish without launching other installers.
- Restart Windows, then verify the driver in Device Manager or the NVIDIA App.
A clean install can resolve conflicts left by an earlier package, but it is not guaranteed to fix every failure. NVIDIA lists several possible causes, including an incorrect system state and software running in the background.
4. If the previous driver must be removed
NVIDIA’s general installer guidance says that, when retrying and the clean-install workflow do not resolve the problem, uninstalling the previous NVIDIA version and rebooting may be necessary before further troubleshooting. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows builds) to remove NVIDIA software as directed by NVIDIA’s support instructions. Restart before attempting the package again.
Remove only the software NVIDIA’s instructions identify. A failed display-driver install is not, by itself, a reason to remove unrelated NVIDIA components or every item with “NVIDIA” in its name.
Do not treat manual deletion of protected driver-store folders, registry edits or third-party removal utilities as routine first steps. Those actions can remove files needed by Windows and create a harder recovery problem.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Windows 10 fresh-install edge case
On a freshly installed Windows 10 system, Windows Update may silently download and install a display driver during the first boot. NVIDIA’s Windows 10 guidance for this specific situation is to allow the process to finish, wait about 15 minutes, restart, and check whether the expected driver is installed and working before attempting a manual installation.
The 15-minute instruction is scoped to that fresh Windows 10 first-boot scenario. It is not a universal waiting period for every Windows version, update or installer error. If Windows Update is still working, let it finish rather than starting a competing NVIDIA setup.

Diagnose a failure by symptom
| Symptom | Most useful next action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Installer says another installation is running | Check Windows Update, finish its operation, reboot, then retry | Two driver transactions can lock the same files and services |
| Installation fails immediately after downloading | Confirm the GPU and operating-system selections, then download a fresh package from NVIDIA | A mismatched or incomplete package cannot install correctly |
| Setup fails after other programs were open | Reboot, close GPU-using software and run the installer again | Background processes can keep driver files or services in use |
| Normal install fails repeatedly | Run the administrator-launched Custom (Advanced) installation with Perform a clean installation enabled | This is NVIDIA’s documented Windows recovery workflow |
| Driver appears installed but the adapter is disabled or shows an error | Restart, inspect Device Manager, and follow NVIDIA’s system-state troubleshooting | The installer result and the device’s operational state are separate checks |
| Every supported retry fails | Collect installer and Windows SetupAPI logs and contact NVIDIA Support | Persistent failures need evidence about the system state rather than more blind retries |
Collect logs for a persistent Windows problem
NVIDIA’s logging guidance identifies C:nvidialogging and Windows SetupAPI logs as useful sources for display-driver installation investigations. The exact files and advanced collection steps depend on the failure, so follow NVIDIA’s current logging instructions rather than copying a generic command from a forum.
When contacting support, include the exact GPU model, Windows edition and build, the NVIDIA package selected, the time of the failed attempt, the installer’s complete error text, and whether Windows Update was active. Preserve the logs before repeating many uninstall and install cycles; later attempts can overwrite useful evidence.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Updating NVIDIA drivers on Linux
Do not transplant the Windows executable installer, clean-install check box or Windows Update advice to Linux. Package management, kernel integration and reboot requirements depend on the distribution and on whether the driver is for a desktop GPU or a data-center deployment.
NVIDIA’s data-center driver installation guide describes two broad approaches: distribution-specific RPM or Debian packages, and a distribution-independent installer. It recommends distribution-specific packages where they are available because they integrate with the native package manager. That recommendation is for the guide’s data-center driver context; it is not a single command that applies to every Linux distribution or GPU.
Use your distribution’s supported instructions
- Identify the Linux distribution and release with its standard system-information command or settings panel.
- Confirm the GPU model and whether you need a desktop or data-center driver branch.
- Read the NVIDIA instructions for that distribution and branch, or the distribution’s own packaged-driver documentation.
- Use the package manager to install and update the driver where that route is supported. Keep repository metadata and installed packages consistent.
- Reboot when the distribution or NVIDIA instructions require it, then verify with the distribution’s hardware tools and the NVIDIA utilities supplied by the package.
A repository package being configured or downloaded is not the same as the driver packages being installed and loaded. Check the package-manager result and the running kernel module after reboot. If a distribution update has left packages partially configured, repair that package-manager state using the distribution’s documented procedure before attempting another driver change.
When comparing a distribution package with a distribution-independent installer, integration is the key practical difference. The package route follows the distribution’s dependency and update mechanisms; the independent route may be documented for a particular driver class but should not be treated as a universal shortcut. Use the instructions that match both the GPU and the distribution rather than mixing commands from different guides.

What not to do during recovery
- Do not install a driver selected for a different GPU, Windows release or Linux branch simply because its version number is newer.
- Do not run the NVIDIA installer while Windows Update is replacing the display driver.
- Do not leave overclocking, monitoring or overlay utilities active during a clean installation.
- Do not assume a clean install fixes every hardware, operating-system or package-manager problem.
- Do not delete driver-store contents or edit protected registry entries as a first response to a generic error.
- Do not use Windows-specific steps on Linux; follow the distribution-specific package route.
- Do not keep retrying without recording the error, because repeated cycles can make the original failure harder to diagnose.
A concise decision path
- Working system, planned update: identify the GPU and OS, use the NVIDIA App or official selector, install normally and reboot.
- First failure: reboot, close GPU-using applications and make sure Windows Update is not installing a driver, then retry.
- Repeated Windows failure: run the installer as administrator, choose Custom (Advanced), enable Perform a clean installation and reboot.
- Still failing: follow NVIDIA’s system-state troubleshooting, remove the previous NVIDIA version only as directed, collect logs and contact support.
- Linux system: use the instructions and package manager for the exact distribution, GPU and driver class; do not apply the Windows workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I update NVIDIA drivers safely?
Confirm the exact GPU and operating system, then use the NVIDIA App or NVIDIA’s official driver selector. Choose only a package offered for that hardware and OS, close GPU-using applications, allow setup to finish, and restart Windows before checking Device Manager or the app.
Should I use the NVIDIA App or download a driver manually?
Use the NVIDIA App for a convenient in-app workflow and update notifications. Use the manual selector when you want direct control over every selection, need to retain an installer, or are working through an offline or administrative process. Both still require a matching GPU and operating system.
Why did my NVIDIA driver installation fail?
Common documented causes include an incorrect system state, background applications holding driver files, or Windows Update installing a driver at the same time. Reboot, close monitoring and accelerated applications, let Windows Update finish, and retry before moving to the clean-install procedure.
How do I clean install an NVIDIA driver on Windows?
Download the package for the exact GPU and Windows version, close open applications, run the installer as administrator, choose Custom (Advanced), select Perform a clean installation, complete setup, and reboot. NVIDIA presents this as a recovery procedure, not a requirement for every routine update.
Can Windows Update interfere with an NVIDIA driver install?
Yes. NVIDIA notes that installation can fail while Windows Update is actively downloading or applying a driver. Check Windows Update for an active operation or restart request, let it finish, restart when asked, and then run the NVIDIA installer.
What should I do after a fresh Windows 10 installation?
On the first boot after a fresh Windows 10 installation, Windows Update may silently install a display driver. NVIDIA’s guidance for that specific situation is to let it finish, wait about 15 minutes, restart, and check the driver before attempting a manual install. That timing does not apply universally to every Windows version or error.
When should I uninstall the previous NVIDIA driver?
Do not begin by removing files manually. First reboot, retry with background software closed, and use NVIDIA’s clean-install option. If that still fails, follow NVIDIA’s instructions for uninstalling the previous NVIDIA version through Windows settings, restart, and then try the package again.
How do I update NVIDIA drivers on Linux?
Follow instructions for the exact distribution, GPU and driver class. NVIDIA’s data-center guide recommends distribution-specific RPM or Debian packages where available because they integrate with the native package manager. Do not copy Windows installer or clean-install steps to Linux, and repair any partially configured package state using the distribution’s documented procedure.
Where are NVIDIA installation logs located?
NVIDIA’s logging guidance identifies C:nvidialogging and Windows SetupAPI logs as useful sources for Windows display-driver investigations. Follow NVIDIA’s current logging instructions for the applicable files and preserve them before repeating many installation cycles.
The Bottom Line
Match the package to the exact GPU and operating system, use NVIDIA’s official route, and reboot after installation. For a Windows failure, first clear the system state: finish Windows Update, close GPU-using applications and retry. If it persists, use NVIDIA’s administrator-launched Custom (Advanced) install with Perform a clean installation. Escalate with NVIDIA’s troubleshooting and logs rather than deleting protected system files. On Linux, stay with the distribution-specific package guidance for the relevant GPU and driver class.
