To update a laptop BIOS safely, first identify the exact model and installed BIOS version, then use only that model’s official update instructions. Install an update when its release notes address a relevant issue or security need; before starting, connect the correct AC adapter and prepare for any BitLocker recovery prompt. BIOS packages and procedures differ by model, so do not use another laptop’s file or assume one brand’s steps apply to all.
Should you update your laptop BIOS?
Update when the release notes or the manufacturer’s advice indicate a fix, security update, compatibility change, or other improvement relevant to your laptop. “Latest” alone does not mean “necessary.” Acer’s notebook guidance says a BIOS update will not automatically make a system faster or improve performance (Acer Answers).
Because firmware packages are model-specific, installing the wrong BIOS can prevent a computer from working. HP explicitly warns about this risk. Confirm the product and package applicability on the manufacturer’s support page before downloading anything (HP BIOS update guidance).

What to check before starting
- Exact model and current BIOS: In Windows, open System Information and note the System Model and BIOS Version/Date. Also record the serial number, service tag, or SNID if the vendor’s support lookup requests it.
- Release notes and prerequisites: Read the instructions for the exact model and operating system. Check applicability and any required prior firmware version; do not assume a package for a similar-looking laptop is compatible.
- Power: Connect the correct AC adapter and meet any battery minimum shown in the model-specific instructions. Do not begin if the adapter or battery is unreliable.
- Encryption recovery: If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, make sure you can access the recovery key before changing firmware. Follow the vendor’s directions on suspending protection and restoring it after a successful update. On a work- or school-managed laptop, check with IT before changing managed security settings.
- Data and applications: Back up important files as a precaution and close open applications before launching the update.
How the official update paths differ by laptop brand
Use the route for your exact model. Menu names, update methods, battery gates, and recovery behavior can vary between models and software versions.

| Brand | Where to find the supported update | Important conditions and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| HP | Search the exact product on HP Software and Driver Downloads; follow the notebook’s BIOS package or HP BIOS Update and Recovery utility instructions. | Keep AC power connected, close applications, and prepare the BitLocker recovery key. HP warns that the wrong BIOS can stop the computer from working; do not turn it off or restart while the update is being applied (HP BIOS update guidance; HP notebook instructions). |
| Dell | Identify the laptop on Dell Support, select the installed operating system and BIOS category, and use the package for that model. Dell also documents SupportAssist and Windows Update routes. | Dell recommends AC power; its guide specifies at least 10% battery and administrator access. Suspend BitLocker as directed, and do not turn off the computer during the update (Dell BIOS update guide). |
| Lenovo | Use Lenovo Vantage or the model’s page on Lenovo Support, then follow the applicable BIOS package instructions. | During memory retraining, the display may go blank. Lenovo’s model user guide warns: “Do not press the power button to interrupt the process” (Lenovo user guide). |
| ASUS | Use MyASUS or the exact model’s official support page. The supported method depends in part on whether the laptop uses x86/x64 or ARM; some models update through MyASUS in UEFI. | Some update prompts require a battery charge above 20% and connected power. A BitLocker recovery key may be requested, so check the model’s instructions and prepare the key (ASUS BIOS update FAQ). |
| MSI | Follow the BIOS update article and method specified for the MSI notebook model. | During the process, do not disconnect power, press keys, or connect or disconnect devices. MSI’s BitLocker guidance says to suspend protection for the update and resume it afterward (MSI notebook BIOS update; MSI BitLocker guidance). |
| Acer | Search Acer Drivers and Manuals by serial number, SNID, or model and check the BIOS/Firmware category. If no BIOS is listed for the system, Acer says some updates may be delivered through Windows Update. | Keep the AC adapter connected. Acer recommends updating for a particular fix or relevant improvement, not simply to seek better speed (Acer Drivers and Manuals; Acer notebook BIOS guidance; Acer Windows Update guidance). |
Safe update procedure
- Record the model and BIOS version. Use Windows System Information or the vendor’s equivalent, then verify the identity through the manufacturer’s support lookup if needed.
- Read the exact model’s release notes. Confirm that the update applies to your laptop and operating system, review any prerequisite versions, and decide whether the listed changes matter to your situation.
- Get the update from the official source. Use the matching manufacturer support page or official update utility. Do not use third-party BIOS download sites or a package for a different model.
- Prepare power, files, and encryption. Connect the correct AC adapter, satisfy the device’s displayed battery requirement, close applications, and make sure important files are backed up. If encryption is enabled, have the recovery key available and suspend protection only as the vendor directs.
- Run the vendor’s model-specific process. Follow the on-screen instructions. Unless the vendor explicitly instructs otherwise, do not power off or restart, disconnect AC, close the lid, press keys, or unplug peripherals while firmware is being written.
- Wait for the laptop to return. Some procedures include restarts, blank screens, or other pauses. Follow the model’s documented progress guidance rather than treating a temporary blank display as proof the update has failed.
- Verify the result. After Windows starts, check System Information for the BIOS version/date and confirm normal startup. If you suspended BitLocker, restore protection according to the vendor’s instructions.
What if the screen goes black or the update appears stuck?
A blank display can be part of a documented update or memory-retraining phase. Lenovo specifically warns that memory retraining can blank the screen; leave the laptop alone and do not press its power button while that process is running. For other brands, consult the exact model’s update instructions for expected screen and restart behavior.
If the laptop does not return to normal operation, do not try a BIOS package from another model or repeatedly force power cycles. Use the manufacturer’s official recovery instructions for the exact laptop, or contact its support service. Recovery steps are model-specific, and the cross-brand instructions above are not a substitute for them.
