Back up your iPhone, connect it to power and Wi‑Fi, then open Settings > General > Software Update and install the version offered for your model. To investigate an unfamiliar app, find it in the App Library, look it up in the App Store, and review its permissions before deciding whether to keep it, remove only its Home Screen icon, lock or hide it, or delete it. Delete App removes the installation and local data, but it does not automatically cancel a subscription and may not remove data already stored in iCloud.

How do I update iOS?

Apple changes supported iPhone models, release versions and regional availability over time, so the safest way to know what your phone can install is to check its own Software Update screen rather than rely on a universal “latest iOS” claim. Apple recommends keeping software current for security updates, new features and bug fixes. See Apple’s Update your iPhone or iPad instructions and the iPhone User Guide update procedure.

Prepare the iPhone

  • Back up first. Use iCloud or a computer so you have a recoverable copy if the update is interrupted or you later need to restore the phone. A backup also preserves a practical starting point before you change apps, permissions or other settings.
  • Connect to power. Leave the iPhone plugged in during the download and installation. An update can take time, and the phone may restart more than once.
  • Join Wi‑Fi. A stable Wi‑Fi connection avoids using mobile data for the update package and is required for the normal automatic-install process Apple describes.
  • Make sure you can authenticate. Keep the device passcode available. iOS may ask for it during installation, and you will need Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode for some app-locking and hiding actions later.

Check for and install an update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then Software Update. This page shows the iOS version currently installed and whether an update is available for your iPhone.
  3. If an update is offered, tap Download and Install.
  4. Enter your passcode if requested and follow the on-screen instructions. The iPhone may restart during installation; do not disconnect it from power.
  5. When the phone returns to the Lock Screen, unlock it and revisit Settings > General > Software Update if you want to confirm the installed version.

If no update appears, that can mean the phone is already current, the model is not eligible for a newer release, or Apple has not made that release available to it yet. A missing offer is not, by itself, evidence that the phone is broken or compromised. If Apple’s update does not appear on the device, Apple says to update with a computer instead. Newer macOS versions use Finder; older macOS versions and Windows use iTunes. The exact computer prompts depend on the operating system version, so follow the workflow in Apple’s update guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn on automatic updates

Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. You can allow automatic downloading, automatic installation, or both. Apple describes automatic installation taking place overnight when the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi‑Fi, with a notification before installation. Automatic download can place the update on the phone in the background so it is ready for a later install.

How do I find an app I do not recognize?

Check the App Library

Swipe left past all Home Screen pages to open the App Library. Use the search field to enter the app’s name, or browse the alphabetical list. An app that was removed from the Home Screen is still installed in the App Library; its absence from a Home Screen page does not prove that it was deleted. Apple explains this organization in its App Library guidance and the iPhone User Guide.

If you cannot find an icon on a Home Screen page, search the App Library before assuming it disappeared. A Home Screen page can be rearranged, and an app can be intentionally placed only in the App Library. Search by the visible name, then browse the alphabetical list if the icon uses an abbreviation or a name you do not remember.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Establish what the app is before deleting it

An unfamiliar icon or name is not, by itself, proof of malware. Select the app in the App Library and use its details to identify it. If you are unsure what it does, Apple’s advice is: “If you’re unsure what an app’s purpose is, you can look it up in the App Store.” Check the developer, description and update history, and compare the result with the app installed on your phone.

Look for a developer name that matches a service you knowingly use, and read the description rather than judging an app by its icon. An app may have been installed by a family member, restored with your backup, supplied by an employer or school, or renamed after an update. Conversely, an app that looks familiar can still deserve a permission review. Identification is a step before removal, not a guarantee that the app is safe.

Do not install a second “cleaner” or antivirus app just to investigate the first one. The relevant checks are already available through iOS settings, the App Store listing and Apple’s privacy controls. There is no need to pay for a product or use a particular cable or utility to perform this cleanup.

Review access and consider personal safety

If you suspect that another person installed or accessed an app without permission, review the apps on the device and examine what data they can access. Safety Check, available in iOS 16 or later, lets you review and change access to categories such as location and photos. Apple cautions that changing permissions or deleting information can affect personal safety and privacy, so consider whether someone could be monitoring the phone before making changes. Read Apple’s Review and delete apps guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In a situation involving a controlling partner, family member or other person who may notice changes, pause before revoking access or deleting data. A sudden change can affect your safety or alert someone who has access to the device. Use Apple’s Safety Check guidance and make a plan appropriate to your circumstances instead of treating deletion as the only solution.

Distinguish uncertainty from an Apple malware warning

If iOS explicitly warns that a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened, treat that differently from merely not recognizing an app. Apple instructs you to delete an app shown in that warning, either directly from the warning or from the Home Screen or App Library. Follow the steps in Apple’s malware alert guidance.

An unfamiliar name, an unexpected icon or a request for a permission is not the same as that explicit Apple warning. Do not label an app malicious solely because you do not remember installing it. Identify it, check its App Store listing and review its access first, unless iOS has displayed the malware alert.

Should I remove, delete, lock, hide or keep the app?

Choose the action that matches the outcome you want. The options are not interchangeable. Removing an icon is a visibility change; deleting is an installation change; locking or hiding limits access while keeping the app; keeping and investigating makes no immediate change.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Action What happens on the iPhone Data and subscription implications Best use
Remove from Home Screen The icon leaves the Home Screen but the app remains installed and available in the App Library. The app and its local data remain. Any subscription remains active. Tidy the Home Screen or create time to investigate.
Delete App The app installation and its data stored locally on the iPhone are removed. In-app subscriptions are not automatically canceled. Photos, documents or other information already stored in iCloud may remain. Remove an app you have identified and no longer want installed.
Lock or hide An eligible downloaded app requires Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode to open; a hidden app moves to the authenticated Hidden folder in the App Library. The app and its data remain. Preinstalled Apple apps cannot be hidden. Limit casual access without deleting the installation.
Keep and investigate No installation change is made while you identify the app and review its access. Useful when the name is unfamiliar but there is no explicit malware warning. Pause when identity, privacy or personal-safety questions are unresolved.

Apple documents removal and deletion in its Remove or delete apps guide and explains deletion consequences at Delete apps on your iPhone or iPad.

How do I remove an app I do not recognize?

Remove only the Home Screen icon

  1. Touch and hold the app icon on the Home Screen.
  2. Tap Remove App.
  3. Tap Remove from Home Screen.

The icon disappears from that Home Screen page, but the app remains in the App Library. This option does not free the app’s local storage, stop its subscription or erase its data. Use it when you want the screen tidy or need time to investigate without removing the installation.

Delete the app from the iPhone

  1. Touch and hold the app on the Home Screen or in the App Library.
  2. Tap Remove App.
  3. Tap Delete App.
  4. Confirm by tapping Delete.

Deletion removes the installed app and its locally stored data from the iPhone. It does not necessarily erase data that the app has already saved in iCloud, such as photos or documents. If the app has its own account, server or cloud storage, deletion from the phone is not the same as closing that account or asking the service to erase its records.

If you want to stop paying for an unwanted in-app subscription, cancel it separately through your Apple account’s subscription controls before or after deleting the app; deleting the icon or installation alone does not cancel billing. Keep the cancellation confirmation or check the subscription status afterward rather than assuming the charge has stopped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lock or hide an eligible downloaded app

Touch and hold the app, choose the lock or hide option shown by iOS, then authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. A hidden app is moved to the authenticated Hidden folder in the App Library. This limits casual access without deleting the app. The feature applies to eligible downloaded apps; preinstalled Apple apps cannot be hidden. The available controls can vary with iOS version and region. Apple’s current instructions are in Lock or hide an app.

Locking and hiding are not substitutes for deletion when you have received an Apple malware warning. If iOS says a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened, follow Apple’s deletion instruction. For an app that is merely unfamiliar, locking or hiding can preserve its local data while you verify its identity.

What happens to subscriptions, iCloud data and built-in apps?

Subscriptions

Deleting an app does not automatically cancel an in-app subscription. Cancel an unwanted subscription separately using Apple’s subscription management controls, and check the cancellation confirmation before assuming future charges have stopped. Removing an icon from the Home Screen, locking an app or hiding it also leaves the subscription in place.

iCloud content

Delete App removes the app and local data from this iPhone. Information that the app synchronized to iCloud can remain there, so reinstalling the app or accessing its service elsewhere may bring that information back. If your goal is to erase cloud content, use the service’s own account or data-deletion controls rather than relying on app deletion. Deleting the app is therefore a device cleanup step, not a promise that every copy of every file has been erased.

Apple’s built-in apps

Some Apple apps cannot be deleted. Certain removable Apple apps can also affect related system functionality when removed, and the set of removable built-in apps can vary by region. A missing Delete App option therefore does not automatically indicate a restriction or malware. If a built-in app is essential to another feature, read Apple’s current instructions before removing it.

Why can’t I delete an app on my iPhone?

Work through these checks in order. Do not assume that a missing menu item proves the app is malicious or permanently undeletable.

1. Check Screen Time restrictions

Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases > Deleting Apps. If deletion is set to disallow, change the setting or ask the person who manages the Screen Time passcode. Apple lists this as a primary cause in its If you can’t delete an app troubleshooting article.

2. Check for organizational management

An iPhone enrolled in mobile-device management may prevent app deletion. Work, school or other organizational administrators can impose that policy. Contact the employer or organization administrator rather than attempting to bypass management. A managed phone can have legitimate business or educational software that you are not allowed to remove.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Look for a third-party restriction app

Apple also identifies third-party restriction software as a possible cause. Review any parental-control or device-management software you intentionally installed and use its documented settings to allow deletion. If another person administers that software, you may need their approval or passcode.

4. Confirm that the app is deletable

Some built-in Apple apps are not removable. If the app is one of those, the absence of Delete App is expected. For a downloaded app that is still blocked after the restriction checks, follow Apple’s troubleshooting guidance or contact Apple Support. Do not repeatedly tap the icon or install an unrelated utility in an attempt to force deletion.

Reader questions answered

Does “Remove from Home Screen” delete the app?

No. It removes only the icon from the Home Screen. The app remains installed in the App Library, with its local data and any subscription still in place. Choose Delete App if you want the installation removed.

Will deleting an app cancel its subscription?

No. Deletion and subscription cancellation are separate actions. Cancel the subscription through Apple’s subscription controls and verify its status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will deleting an app erase its iCloud photos or documents?

Not necessarily. Delete App removes the installation and local data from the iPhone, while information already stored in iCloud can remain. Use the app or service’s account and data controls when cloud deletion is your goal.

Is every unfamiliar app malware?

No. An unfamiliar name or icon can reflect a restored app, a family or organization installation, a renamed service or an app that was moved off the Home Screen. Look it up in the App Store and review permissions. Treat it as malware when iOS displays Apple’s explicit malware warning, and then follow Apple’s delete instruction.

Can I hide a preinstalled Apple app?

Apple’s lock-and-hide feature applies to eligible downloaded apps. Preinstalled Apple apps cannot be hidden, and some built-in apps cannot be deleted at all.

Why is an app missing from my Home Screen but still on the phone?

It may have been removed from the Home Screen while remaining in the App Library. Swipe left past the Home Screen pages and search the App Library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the update is not offered?

Check the version shown in Settings > General > Software Update. The phone may already be current, the model may not support the release, or the release may not yet be available to it. Apple says to use Finder on newer macOS or iTunes on older macOS and Windows when an update does not appear on the device.

Can I investigate an app without deleting it?

Yes. Keep it installed while you look up its App Store listing, review its developer and description, and examine permissions with Safety Check where applicable. You can also remove only its Home Screen icon or lock or hide an eligible downloaded app.

A safe cleanup sequence

  1. Back up the iPhone using iCloud or a computer.
  2. Connect it to power and Wi‑Fi.
  3. Install the iOS update offered at Settings > General > Software Update, using a computer if the device does not show the update.
  4. Open the App Library and make a list of unfamiliar apps instead of deleting them immediately.
  5. Look up each app in the App Store, checking the developer, description and update history.
  6. Review permissions, using Safety Check when privacy or unauthorized access is a concern and considering personal-safety consequences before changing access.
  7. If iOS shows an explicit malware warning, delete the flagged app as Apple directs.
  8. For other apps, choose Remove from Home Screen, Delete App, Lock/Hide, or Keep based on the outcome you need.
  9. Cancel any unwanted subscription separately and remember that iCloud data may require separate deletion.
  10. If deletion is unavailable, check Screen Time, device management, third-party restrictions and whether the app is built in.
  11. After cleanup, revisit the App Library and subscription controls so you can confirm what remains installed and what remains active.

Keep the distinction clear

The safest process separates four questions: Is the iPhone’s software current? What is the unfamiliar app? What outcome do you want on this device? What happens to subscriptions and cloud data afterward? Checking Software Update answers the first. App Library, App Store lookup and Safety Check address the second. The removal table helps with the third. A separate subscription check and an understanding of iCloud storage address the fourth. That sequence avoids both extremes: deleting a legitimate app without understanding the consequences and leaving a genuinely flagged app in place after an Apple malware warning.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I update iOS safely?

Back up the iPhone, connect it to power and Wi‑Fi, open Settings > General > Software Update, and tap Download and Install when an update is offered. If no update appears on the phone, Apple documents using Finder on newer macOS or iTunes on older macOS and Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I remove an app I do not recognize?

Find it in the App Library, look it up in the App Store, and review its permissions first. Then choose Remove from Home Screen, Delete App, Lock or Hide, or Keep based on whether you want to hide the icon, remove the installation, limit access or investigate further.

Does Remove from Home Screen delete the app?

No. The app stays installed in the App Library, and its local data and subscription remain. Use Remove App > Delete App to remove the installation.

Why can’t I delete an app on my iPhone?

Check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases > Deleting Apps. Device management, third-party restriction software and nondeletable built-in Apple apps can also remove the Delete App option.

Does deleting an app cancel its subscription?

No. Cancel an unwanted subscription separately through Apple’s subscription controls and verify the cancellation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will deleting an app remove its iCloud data?

Not necessarily. Deletion removes the app and local data from the iPhone, but photos, documents or other information already stored in iCloud may remain.

What if iOS says an app contains malware?

Treat the explicit Apple warning differently from an unfamiliar name or icon. Delete the flagged third-party app from the warning or from the Home Screen or App Library, following Apple’s malware-alert instructions.

Can I hide an app instead of deleting it?

Eligible downloaded apps can be locked or hidden with Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode. A hidden app moves to the authenticated Hidden folder in the App Library. Preinstalled Apple apps cannot be hidden.

The Bottom Line

Back up first, update through Settings > General > Software Update, and identify an unfamiliar app before acting. Remove from Home Screen only hides the icon; Delete App removes the installation and local data but does not cancel subscriptions or necessarily erase iCloud content. If deletion is blocked, check Screen Time, device management, third-party restrictions and whether the app is built in.
