To update an iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update, review the version shown, and follow the installation prompts. To let iOS install full updates automatically, open Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates and turn on Automatically Install. For smaller security fixes delivered between full iOS releases, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements and turn on Automatically Install. Back up the iPhone before either type of update.
What the two automatic-update controls do
iPhone has separate controls for full iOS updates and for additional security improvements. They are related, but they do not perform the same job.

If your iPhone uses older terminology, you may see a label referring to “Rapid Security Responses” instead of “Background Security Improvements.” Use the corresponding security-response control shown on your device. Labels and available choices can vary by iOS version.

Apple recommends setting up an automatic backup or making a manual backup before installing an update. A backup gives you a recovery point if an interruption or an unrelated problem affects your data.

Confirm a backup exists
- Use the backup method you normally rely on and verify that a recent backup completed.
- If you do not use automatic backups, make a manual backup before tapping the installation command.
- Do not erase the iPhone or remove data merely to install a routine update unless Apple’s specific instructions for your situation tell you to do so.
Check the basic update conditions
- Connect the iPhone to a reliable Wi‑Fi network for an over-the-air update.
- Keep the iPhone connected to power, particularly if an update will run overnight.
- Allow enough time for downloading, preparing, restarting and verifying the installation. The duration depends on the update and the device.
- Have the device passcode available. iOS can request it during the process.
A new cable, charger, computer or paid service is not required for the Settings-based method. Apple also documents updating with a computer as an alternative if you cannot complete the process on the iPhone.
How to check which iOS version is installed
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
The Software Update screen identifies the iOS version currently installed and tells you whether an update is available for that iPhone. Read the model-specific result on this screen rather than assuming that a version mentioned elsewhere applies to your device.
If an update is offered, review its details and use the on-screen command to download and install it. Keep the iPhone connected to Wi‑Fi and power while it works. The phone may restart more than once; do not interrupt it while the installation screen is active.

How to install an iOS update manually
Step 1: open Software Update
Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Wait for the phone to finish checking. The page shows your installed version and, when eligible, the available update.
Step 2: back up before starting
Confirm that your latest automatic or manual backup completed. If it has not, make a backup first. Apple identifies keeping software current as one of the most important actions for maintaining the security of an Apple product, but a backup protects your personal information during the change.
Step 3: start the offered update
Tap the update command shown on the Software Update page and follow each prompt. You may need to enter your passcode and agree to the software terms. The iPhone downloads the package, prepares it, restarts and verifies the installation.

Step 4: verify the result
After the iPhone returns to the Lock Screen, open Settings > General > Software Update again. Confirm that the installed-version information reflects the update and that no additional update is waiting. If the screen still shows an offer, read its message before attempting another installation.

How to turn on automatic iOS updates
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Tap Automatic Updates.
- Choose the automatic behavior you want.
Choose Automatically Install
Turn on Automatically Install when you want the phone to complete an available iOS update without waiting for you to start the installation. Apple describes the normal process as an overnight download and installation while the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi‑Fi. Apple also says that you are notified before installation.
This is the hands-off choice. It does not mean an update installs at an arbitrary moment while you are using the phone; the charging, Wi‑Fi and notification conditions are part of Apple’s described process. You should still keep backups current and check the Software Update screen when you need to know exactly which version is installed.
Choose Automatically Download
Turn on Automatically Download if you want iOS to fetch an available update but prefer to decide when installation occurs. Apple’s support instructions state that Automatically Install must be turned off for Automatically Download to be available as a separate choice.
With this arrangement, downloading can happen in the background, but the iPhone will wait for you to begin the installation. This can suit a work phone, a travel device or any situation in which you want to choose the restart time. A downloaded package is not the same as an installed update, so check Software Update and complete the installation when you are ready.
Change the choice later
Return to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates whenever you want to change the behavior. Turning off Automatically Install does not remove the option to update manually; it only stops the automatic installation behavior. If you switch to Automatically Download, remember that installation remains a separate action.

How to enable automatic Background Security Improvements
Background Security Improvements are additional protections delivered between full iOS software updates. They are controlled in a different part of Settings from ordinary automatic updates.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Background Security Improvements.
- Turn on Automatically Install.
When enabled, the iPhone can install an eligible security improvement without waiting for the next complete iOS release. This setting is complementary: leave ordinary iOS updating enabled as well, because a full update can contain operating-system changes, bug fixes and security fixes that a background improvement does not provide.
What happens if compatibility is a problem?
Apple notes that, in rare cases, a background improvement may be temporarily removed when compatibility issues are discovered. A future software update can install the corrected improvement. Therefore, do not treat every background response as a permanent, standalone software version, and do not postpone a normal iOS update because this control is enabled.
If the wording is different
Older iOS versions used wording associated with “Rapid Security Responses.” Current Apple guidance uses Background Security Improvements. If your menu uses different wording, open the closest matching security-response setting and tap Learn More when that option appears. The exact label, location or availability can change with the iOS version installed.
How the settings work together
A practical configuration for most people is to keep both automatic-install controls enabled. The first handles complete iOS releases under the General settings; the second handles additional security protections under Privacy & Security.
- Full iOS update: a larger operating-system release that you can install manually, install automatically overnight, or download automatically and install later.
- Background Security Improvement: a separate security delivery that can arrive between full releases when Apple provides one.
- Backup: a separate safety measure that should be completed before installing either kind of change.
Enabling Background Security Improvements does not enable full automatic iOS updates, and enabling Automatically Install for iOS does not by itself enable the background security control. Check both paths separately.

Why your iPhone may not show the update you expect
Eligibility depends on the model
Apple does not make every iOS release available to every iPhone. The model and the software already installed determine which update the Software Update screen can offer. Two iPhones in the same household can therefore show different results.
Apple can maintain more than one software branch
Apple’s security-release listings can include a current branch and earlier branches for some devices. A phone that cannot move to the newest major release may still receive an update for the branch it supports. Use the iPhone’s Software Update result and Apple’s Apple security releases list together when you need supported-device details.
Release information changes
Do not use a fixed version number as a universal target. Apple’s release list changes as new versions are published, and the version shown on your phone is the authoritative offer for that device at that time. The release list also records dated releases and the devices they support.
After an installation, downgrading may not be possible
Apple’s security-release information says that the latest version cannot be downgraded to the previous version after installation. Treat that as a general post-install behavior, not as a reason to delay an available security update. Back up first, review the update information and make sure you are ready for the restart before confirming.

No update appears
Open Settings > General > Software Update and read both the installed-version line and the availability message. If the phone says it is up to date, that means no newer version currently offered to that model and software combination was found. Confirm eligibility against Apple’s security-release list if you expected a particular branch.

The security-response menu is missing
Check Settings > Privacy & Security for Background Security Improvements or older Rapid Security Responses wording. The setting may not exist, or may use another label, on an older iOS version. Install the iOS update offered for your model, then check the Privacy & Security section again. Use Learn More in the menu when available.

The automatic-download choice is not visible
Return to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Apple’s instructions require Automatically Install to be turned off before Automatically Download appears as the alternative. Change that control, then review the page again.
The update does not complete
Do not assume that a failed attempt has installed successfully. Reopen Software Update and read the exact status shown there. Confirm that the iPhone has a reliable Wi‑Fi connection, is connected to power and has a current backup before trying the on-screen procedure again. For a persistent error, use Apple’s dedicated update-troubleshooting guidance rather than deleting data or repeatedly forcing restarts.
Using a computer instead of the iPhone
Apple documents a computer-based update route as an alternative to the Settings method. This can be useful when the iPhone cannot complete the over-the-air process or when you need to manage the update from a computer. The exact application and prompts depend on the computer and operating system. Follow Apple’s current computer-update instructions for the device you have, and back up before beginning.

A maintenance routine that avoids missed security fixes
- Keep an automatic backup enabled, or make a manual backup before a planned update.
- Once in a while, open Settings > General > Software Update to confirm the installed version and review any pending release.
- In Automatic Updates, choose Automatically Install if you want overnight completion, or Automatically Download if you need to choose the installation time.
- In Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements, turn on Automatically Install.
- Keep the iPhone on Wi‑Fi and power when you expect an overnight update.
- After a manual or automatic installation, revisit Software Update to verify the installed version.
This routine separates the three decisions that are often confused: protecting data with a backup, installing a full iOS release, and accepting additional security improvements between releases.
