HomePod and HomePod mini update automatically by default. You can check manually in the Home app, and you should leave the speaker connected to power while a white spinning light shows an update in progress. When Siri stops responding, work through network and listening settings first, then restart the speaker; reset or computer-based restoration is the final software step because it erases the HomePod’s settings.

This guide covers the current HomePod software 26.6 release listed by Apple in 2026, the exact Home app paths for updating and restarting, Wi-Fi and voice-recognition checks, and the point at which Apple service becomes the practical next step.

How HomePod software updates work

HomePod software is managed through the Home app on an iPhone, iPad or Mac. Installation is automatic by default, so most owners do not need to download a file or connect the speaker to a computer. A manual check is useful when a feature or fix has just been released, when several HomePods appear to be on different versions, or when you want to confirm that an update actually installed.

Apple’s release notes currently list HomePod software 26.6 in 2026, with performance and stability improvements. The same release-note history contains earlier feature and bug-fix versions, so an older number should not be presented as the current release without checking Apple’s latest listing. Apple can publish a newer build after you read this guide, and the Home app’s displayed version is the practical authority for your speaker.

The iPhone, iPad or Mac you use for the Home app should itself be up to date before you check the speaker. An outdated controller can make a HomePod appear unavailable or prevent settings from loading even when the speaker is functioning. During installation, keep HomePod connected to power. A white light that spins around the top indicates that an update is in progress; unplugging at that point can interrupt the process.

Updates are applied to each HomePod in the home. If you have a stereo pair or multiple rooms, check the version shown for each unit rather than assuming that one successful update covered every speaker. Leave all units powered while the Home app works through the installation. Avoid moving a speaker, changing its network, or repeatedly restarting it while the update indicator is visible.

Check for an update manually in the Home app

Before you start

  • Update the iPhone, iPad or Mac running the Home app.
  • Leave the HomePod or HomePod mini plugged in for the entire check and installation.
  • If you manage several speakers, identify the specific HomePod whose version you want to verify.
  • Keep the controlling device on the preferred home Wi-Fi network so it can communicate with the speaker.

Exact update path

  1. Open the Home app.
  2. Select More, then Home Settings.
  3. Choose Software Update.
  4. If an update is offered, select Update and let the Home app complete the installation.

Do not remove power while the top light is spinning white. The light should stop once the update has finished and the speaker returns to normal operation. A long-looking installation does not by itself mean the HomePod is dead; keep it powered and give the process time to complete before intervening.

How to verify the result

If no update is offered, the Home app reports that HomePod is up to date and displays the installed version. Record that version when diagnosing a problem so you know whether every speaker is on the same software release. If installation appears stuck, wait with the speaker powered; do not repeatedly unplug it while the white spinning light is present.

If the Home app cannot reach the speaker at all, treat that as a communication problem first. Read the HomePod’s settings for an alert, then check Wi-Fi before concluding that an update failed. A network mismatch or a router that isolates local devices can prevent the controller from seeing the HomePod even though both devices can independently reach the internet.

What you see What it means What to do
White light spinning during the update HomePod is installing software Keep it connected to power until the process ends
Home app says HomePod is up to date No newer update is being offered to that speaker Note the displayed version and move to Siri troubleshooting if needed
HomePod software 26.6 shown The version listed in Apple’s 2026 release notes Use the release notes as the current-version reference because Apple can publish newer releases
Home app cannot load the speaker’s settings The controller and HomePod may not be communicating Check the preferred Wi-Fi network, signal level and local-device isolation

Start Siri troubleshooting with the Home app

Open the affected HomePod in the Home app and read any alert shown in its settings before changing anything. Apple says these alerts can identify Wi-Fi, Apple Account and other configuration problems. Resolving the alert is usually more productive than repeatedly saying the wake phrase. Note the exact wording; “No Response,” a network mismatch, and an account warning point to different checks.

Check Wi-Fi signal and network selection

Look at the HomePod’s Wi-Fi status in the Home app. Apple treats two bars or fewer as a weak signal. Move the speaker closer to the router and reduce nearby wireless interference, then test Siri again. A speaker placed inside a cabinet, behind a television, or at the far end of a house may have enough signal for occasional audio but not a reliable conversation with Siri.

HomePod and the iPhone or iPad controlling it should use the same preferred Wi-Fi network. A phone on a guest network while the speaker remains on the main network can prevent the devices from communicating even when both devices appear to have internet access. If your router combines bands under one network name, leave the devices on that preferred network rather than manually forcing one device onto an isolated guest SSID.

Some router configurations block peer-to-peer traffic. Because HomePod relies on local communication with Apple devices, a network that prevents peer-to-peer connections can limit control and Siri responses. If the signal is strong but the Home app still reports a communication problem, check whether the router’s guest-isolation or client-isolation feature is separating the devices. Corporate, hotel, and other managed networks can impose the same restriction; testing on a normal private home network helps distinguish a router policy from a HomePod fault.

Resolve a Network Mismatch alert

When HomePod reports a network mismatch, move it to the Wi-Fi network currently used by the iPhone. Follow the Home app’s move-to-this-network prompt, wait for the network information to update, and then try Siri again. The change must finish before you judge whether the problem is fixed. Do not switch the phone to a different network halfway through the process, because the Home app needs a stable connection while it updates the HomePod’s network information.

When Siri says it cannot connect to the internet

The message “I’m having trouble connecting to the internet” points first to a network problem rather than a microphone failure. Confirm that the controlling iPhone or iPad can load a webpage on the intended Wi-Fi network, check the HomePod’s signal level, and resolve any Network Mismatch alert. If the router blocks peer-to-peer traffic, correct that setting or test the HomePod on a network that allows local device communication.

After correcting Wi-Fi, wait briefly for the Home app to refresh before repeating a request. If basic touch-activated Siri works but internet-based requests fail, continue investigating connectivity. If neither touch activation nor the Home app can communicate, the fault may be broader than Siri’s wake phrase and the restart sequence below becomes the next controlled test.

Check whether HomePod is listening for Siri

Enable the wake phrase

In the HomePod’s settings, confirm that Listen for “Siri” or “Hey Siri” is enabled. If this option is off, the speaker will not respond to the spoken wake phrase even though its audio hardware may be working normally. Make the change in the Home app, wait for the setting to synchronize, and then test from the same room in a normal speaking voice.

Match Siri language and account settings

On the companion iPhone or iPad, enable Siri under iCloud and make sure the device language matches the language configured for HomePod. A language mismatch can make a correctly spoken phrase fail to trigger the expected response. Check both the language label and the Apple Account used by the person making the request; changing only one of those settings can leave recognition inconsistent.

Use touch activation as a diagnostic

Touch and hold the top of HomePod until the multicoloured light appears, then speak your request. This test bypasses the wake phrase:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If touch activation works but saying “Siri” or “Hey Siri” does not, concentrate on the Listen for Siri setting, language selection and voice training.
  • If touch activation also fails, continue with the network, restart and reset checks below.

Touch activation is a diagnostic, not a replacement for fixing the wake phrase. Once it works, release the top, correct the listening or recognition settings, and test the spoken phrase again. If the top surface never produces the multicoloured light, document that fact for service after completing the software checks.

Fix voice-recognition problems

Turn on Recognise My Voice

In the Home app, open Home Settings, select the affected person, and turn on Recognise My Voice. HomePod and HomePod mini can recognise multiple voices so household members can receive personalised music and media. Apple documents support for up to six users in a shared home; guests can still make basic Siri requests. Availability varies by language, country and region.

Voice recognition affects personalization rather than the basic ability to issue every command. A guest may still receive a basic answer, while a recognized household member can receive that person’s music and media recommendations. If only one person is affected, focus on that person’s Home settings and iPhone instead of resetting every speaker in the home.

Rebuild a failed voice profile

  1. In Home Settings, turn Recognise My Voice off for the person who is not being recognised.
  2. Turn it back on.
  3. Restart the person’s iPhone or iPad and the HomePod.
  4. On that iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri (or Siri, depending on the operating-system label) > Talk & Type to Siri and complete the voice-training prompts again.

Retraining is appropriate when Siri responds to the wake phrase but uses the wrong person’s account, fails to provide personalised media, or recognises one household member inconsistently. Test after retraining with a request that should be personalized, and then test a basic request to separate account recognition from general Siri availability.

Restart HomePod before resetting it

Apple recommends a restart before a reset because a restart does not require you to set up the speaker again. It preserves the Home configuration while clearing a temporary software or network state. Use the Home app first:

  1. Select the HomePod.
  2. Open its settings.
  3. Choose Reset HomePod > Restart HomePod.

For a stereo pair, choose Restart HomePod for the pair from the pair’s settings. Restarting the pair is preferable to repeatedly restarting one unit while the other remains in an unknown state. If the restart command is unavailable, unplug the HomePod, wait 15 seconds, and plug it back in. A spinning white light during startup indicates that the speaker is booting.

A recurring flashing white light after startup can indicate that a reset is required. Do not treat a single startup animation as a failure; allow the speaker time to finish booting before testing Siri. If the light continues to flash after a restart, record when it happens and proceed to the reset guidance rather than cycling power indefinitely.

Reset HomePod only after network and restart checks

A reset returns HomePod to factory settings, erases its configuration and requires setup again. It is not a routine way to install an update and should not be the first response to a weak Wi-Fi signal or a disabled wake phrase. Use it when Siri and Home app communication remain broken after correcting Wi-Fi, checking listening and voice settings, and restarting.

Before confirming a reset, make sure you know which home and Apple Account should be used during setup again. A reset can remove the speaker from its current configuration, so expect to re-add it and review room, stereo-pair, Apple TV and personalization arrangements afterward.

Reset from the Home app

Open the HomePod’s settings in the Home app and choose the reset command. Confirm the on-screen warning, then wait for the speaker to finish erasing and become available for setup. The exact wording can vary with the Home app version, so read the confirmation carefully before accepting it. Keep the speaker powered throughout the erase and setup transition.

Restore a HomePod mini from a computer

A HomePod mini has an additional recovery route that both resets the speaker and installs the latest available software:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disconnect the HomePod mini as needed so you can access its USB-C cable.
  2. Connect that USB-C cable to a Mac or PC.
  3. On a Mac, open Finder. On a Windows PC or a supported Mac setup, open Apple Devices or iTunes.
  4. Select HomePod mini in the device list.
  5. Choose Restore HomePod and allow the process to complete.

Apple says this restoration resets HomePod mini and updates it to the latest software. You will still need to set up the speaker again after the restore. Do not disconnect the USB-C cable or close the device-management app while restoration is running. If the computer does not see the mini, try the cable and connection again before assuming the speaker itself has failed.

What to do if Siri still does not respond

If a HomePod remains unusable after the appropriate reset, or a HomePod mini remains unusable after computer restoration, the practical next step is Apple service. Service availability, repair decisions and warranty coverage depend on the device and region, so confirm those terms with Apple rather than assuming a repair or replacement will be covered. There is no universal repair price that applies to every model or location.

Before contacting service, note the software version, the exact Home app alert, whether touch activation works, the Wi-Fi signal level, and which recovery steps you completed. This gives the technician a reproducible symptom instead of only the statement that Siri is not responding. Also note whether the failure affects one voice or every person, whether the speaker is part of a stereo pair, and whether the problem began after a network change or update.

Keep, replace or seek service

Decision factor Keep and troubleshoot Seek service or replacement
Failure pattern Intermittent response, network mismatch or settings-related behavior Persistent failure after reset or restore, including failed touch activation
Setup effort You can complete a restart or correct Wi-Fi without erasing the Home You are prepared to set up a replacement or restored speaker again
Room and audio needs The existing output and placement are suitable You need a different output level or a new placement for the room
Apple TV or stereo-pair use The current speaker still fits the pair or Apple TV arrangement A replacement must be compatible with the intended pair or Apple TV setup
Local support and cost Software recovery is the lower-effort path Compare local service availability and the cost of another unit

If you are considering a replacement, compare the desired room coverage and audio output with the current unit rather than treating a new speaker as an automatic fix. Check whether you need a stereo pair or Apple TV audio arrangement, and verify that the replacement model fits that plan. For a physical-product listing, the canonical product phrase is Apple HomePod mini; confirm the seller, region, current price and any affiliate eligibility at the time of purchase.

A concise recovery order

  1. Open HomePod settings and read the alert.
  2. Check signal strength, preferred Wi-Fi network and peer-to-peer access.
  3. Confirm Listen for Siri, Siri language and Recognise My Voice.
  4. Use touch activation to separate wake-phrase issues from broader failures.
  5. Restart from the Home app, or unplug for 15 seconds if the command is unavailable.
  6. Reset only when the earlier checks fail; restore HomePod mini from a computer when appropriate.
  7. Arrange Apple service when the speaker remains unresponsive after reset or restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I update HomePod software?

Open the Home app, select More > Home Settings > Software Update, and choose Update if one is offered. HomePod updates automatically by default. Keep it connected to power while the white light spins.

Why is Siri not responding on my HomePod?

Read any Home app alert, check that HomePod and your iPhone or iPad use the same preferred Wi-Fi network, verify the signal is stronger than two bars, and make sure Listen for “Siri” or “Hey Siri” is enabled. Then restart HomePod.

What does HomePod No Response mean?

It usually means the Home app cannot communicate reliably with the speaker. Check for a network mismatch, weak Wi-Fi, router guest or client isolation, and Apple Account alerts before resetting.

Why does Siri say it cannot connect to the internet?

Treat the message as a network problem. Confirm the controlling iPhone or iPad has internet access, resolve any Network Mismatch alert, improve the HomePod’s signal, and ensure the router allows peer-to-peer communication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I reset a HomePod mini?

Try a restart first. If reset is necessary, connect the mini’s USB-C cable to a Mac or PC, open Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes, select HomePod mini, and choose Restore HomePod. Restoration erases it and installs the latest available software.

Can HomePod recognize more than one person?

Yes. Apple documents voice recognition for up to six users in a shared home, with availability varying by language, country and region. Guests can still make basic Siri requests.

What should I do if touch activation works but the wake phrase does not?

Enable Listen for Siri, match the iPhone or iPad and HomePod languages, turn Recognise My Voice off and on if needed, restart both devices, and retrain Siri under Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri (or Siri) > Talk & Type to Siri.

When should I contact Apple?

After correcting Wi-Fi and listening settings, restarting, and completing the appropriate reset or HomePod mini restoration, contact Apple if the speaker remains unusable. Service and warranty terms vary by device and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

HomePod normally updates automatically, but you can check through Home > More > Home Settings > Software Update. Keep power connected while the white light spins. For Siri failures, resolve alerts, use the same Wi-Fi network, enable listening and voice recognition, and test touch activation. Restart before resetting; reset erases settings, while a computer restore can reset and update HomePod mini. Persistent failure after recovery is the point to compare local service or replacement options with Apple.
