For a Firefox installation downloaded directly from Mozilla, the reliable update path is Menu → Help → About Firefox. Firefox checks for an update, downloads it when one is available, and completes installation only after you select Restart to update Firefox. After the restart, open About Firefox again—or visit about:support—and record the version shown. That installed version, rather than the fact that a download started, is the evidence that the update is active.
The exact update path depends on how Firefox was installed. A Linux distribution package is maintained by the distribution’s package manager, and a Microsoft Store installation is maintained by the Store. Windows administrators have additional checks: the installed DisplayVersion, the matching Firefox ESR release published by Mozilla, and the Firefox Background Update scheduled task.
First identify how Firefox was installed
Firefox does not have one universal updater. Before troubleshooting, determine which installation channel owns the copy you are running. The channel controls where updates appear, who delivers them, and which verification steps are meaningful.

Mozilla’s desktop installer
If you downloaded Firefox directly from Mozilla and installed it with the standard desktop installer, use Firefox’s own About Firefox window. This is the normal manual update and version-check location for that installation type.

Linux distribution package
On Linux, Firefox may have been packaged and maintained by your distribution rather than installed from Mozilla’s download. In that case, updates are delivered through the distribution’s package manager. Firefox may not display the same update controls in its settings because the operating system’s package system owns the installation.
Microsoft Store installation
If Firefox came from the Microsoft Store, the Store is the update channel. Check for updates there instead of expecting the Mozilla installer workflow to manage that copy.
If you are unsure, open About Firefox to see the installed version, then consider how Firefox was originally obtained. A package-manager or Store installation can still show a Firefox version in the application, but the update action belongs to its external channel.
Update a Mozilla-installed Firefox on Windows or macOS
Use this procedure when Firefox was installed directly from Mozilla. Save important work first, because applying the update requires Firefox to restart.
- Open the Firefox menu. Select the menu button in the browser toolbar.
- Choose Help. In the menu, select Help, then choose About Firefox.
- Let the check finish. Opening the About window starts an update check by default. If an update is available, Firefox downloads it.
- Apply the downloaded update. When the download is complete, select Restart to update Firefox. Firefox closes and reopens to complete installation.
- Check the result after reopening. Open Help → About Firefox again and record the version shown below the Firefox name.
The restart is a required part of the installation, not merely a way to dismiss the About window. A downloaded package can remain unapplied while the old Firefox process is still running. Do not treat a completed download, a progress indicator, or an “up to date” message seen before restarting as proof that the new build is active.
Verify the installed version
Verification should answer one precise question: which Firefox version is running after the update process has completed?

Check About Firefox
Open Menu → Help → About Firefox after Firefox has restarted. The version appears below the Firefox name. Record the complete version string, including any suffix or channel information shown in the window. Opening this window also starts an update check, so allow the check to finish before interpreting the result.
Check about:support
For a second view, type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. In the Application Basics section, read the installed Firefox version. This is useful when documenting a machine, helping support staff, or confirming the version without relying on the wording of the About window.
What counts as evidence
The version displayed after the restart is user-level evidence of what is installed. The fact that Firefox began downloading an update is not equivalent evidence, because the update may still be waiting for the restart that applies it. If the version shown in both locations is the expected one, the application is running that version.
When About Firefox says Firefox is up to date
Mozilla cautions that a download can continue in the background even when the About window says Firefox is up to date. This can make the status appear contradictory: the check reports no additional download while the update package is still being prepared for installation.
Use the action Firefox presents in the About window. If Restart to update Firefox appears, save your work and select it. After Firefox reopens, check the displayed version again. If the restart action is not yet available, leave Firefox open long enough for the background download to finish, then return to About Firefox and check again.
Do not infer successful installation from the absence of an error alone. The decisive check is the version shown after Firefox has restarted. If that version has not changed, the update has not been demonstrated as installed, even if a download previously began.

Update Firefox through a Linux distribution
A distribution-packaged Firefox is updated by the operating system’s package manager. The exact application and labels differ among Linux distributions, so use the updater supplied by your distribution rather than trying to force the Mozilla installer workflow onto a package-managed copy.
Install the pending package
- Open your distribution’s software-update or package-management tool.
- Refresh the available package information if the tool provides a refresh action.
- Install the pending Firefox package and wait for the package operation to finish.
- Close and reopen Firefox if the package manager or your distribution requests it.
Because the package manager controls this channel, Firefox may not show update controls in its settings. An absent update button is therefore not, by itself, a failed update; it can be normal for a distribution package.
Verify the package-managed installation
After the package operation and any requested restart, open About Firefox and read the version below the Firefox name. You can also use about:support and read the version in Application Basics. These checks show the version the running Firefox reports, regardless of whether the package was delivered by a graphical updater or another package-management interface.

The recovery action depends on the distribution, so follow the package manager’s own error message rather than deleting or replacing files from the Mozilla installer.
Update Firefox from the Microsoft Store
A Firefox installation obtained through the Microsoft Store receives updates through the Store. Open the Store, go to its library or updates area, and use the Store’s update control for Firefox when one is offered. The wording and placement of the control can vary with the Windows version and Store interface.
Wait for the Store to finish the installation, then open Firefox and verify the installed version in Menu → Help → About Firefox. You can confirm the same value in about:support, under Application Basics. If Firefox was open during the Store update, close and reopen it before treating the version as active.

If the Store reports that Firefox is current but the running application still shows an older version, fully exit Firefox, allow the Store operation to complete, and launch Firefox again. The version shown after reopening is the value to document.
Windows enterprise verification
Organizations often need more than a user-level version check. Mozilla’s enterprise troubleshooting guidance identifies three checks for a Windows deployment: the installed DisplayVersion, comparison with the current Firefox ESR release published by Mozilla, and the state of the Firefox background-update task.
Check DisplayVersion
Inspect the installed application’s DisplayVersion using the organization’s normal Windows software-inventory or application-management method. Record the value exactly as reported. The purpose of this check is to establish which version Windows sees as installed, independently of a user’s description of what happened in the browser.
Compare with the published Firefox ESR release
For an installation managed as Firefox ESR, compare the recorded DisplayVersion with the current Firefox ESR release published by Mozilla. Make the comparison against the same ESR channel; comparing an ESR deployment with an unrelated release channel can produce a misleading mismatch. Keep the comparison date with the ticket or inventory record because Mozilla publishes new releases over time.
Inspect Firefox Background Update
Open Windows Task Scheduler and locate the Firefox Background Update scheduled task. Confirm that the task exists, is enabled, and runs successfully without errors. A missing task, a disabled task, or repeated task errors gives administrators a reason to investigate the background-update mechanism rather than assuming that a browser restart alone solved the problem.

After correcting an enterprise update problem, launch Firefox and perform the user-level verification as well: check About Firefox or about:support and record the running version. The administrative checks explain how the deployment is maintained; the in-browser version confirms what the user is actually running.

Troubleshoot a version that did not change
Use the symptom that matches your situation instead of repeating the same update action.
No update controls appear in Firefox
- Linux distribution package: use the distribution’s package manager. Firefox may intentionally omit its own update controls for this channel.
- Microsoft Store installation: use the Store’s library or update area.
- Mozilla-installed copy: reopen Help → About Firefox and wait for the check to complete. If the window offers a restart action, the download has not yet been applied.
The update downloaded but Firefox still shows the old version
- Save your work and select Restart to update Firefox if it is available.
- After Firefox reopens, check About Firefox again.
- Confirm the same version under Application Basics at
about:support. - If both locations still show the old version, identify the installation channel and use that channel’s updater. A Store or distribution package cannot be repaired reliably by following the Mozilla-installer steps.
The About window says up to date, but an update is expected
Allow time for a background download to finish and look again for Restart to update Firefox. Then restart and verify the displayed version. If no restart action appears and the version remains unchanged, check the owning update channel rather than assuming the status message proves that a security fix is installed.
An enterprise machine has an unexpected version
- Record the browser version from About Firefox or
about:support. - Record Windows’ DisplayVersion through the organization’s inventory method.
- Compare the value with the published Firefox ESR release used by the organization.
- Inspect the Firefox Background Update scheduled task for existence, enabled status, successful runs, and errors.
These records distinguish a browser that has not restarted from a deployment whose background updater is disabled, missing, or failing.

First confirm that the policy is evaluating the same installation you opened. Multiple Firefox copies can be present on one Windows computer, or an administrator may be checking an ESR channel while a user opened another channel. Match the executable being managed with the version shown in the running browser, then repeat the DisplayVersion and scheduled-task checks. Do not mark the security fix as verified until the running version and the managed installation agree.
Why the restart and version check matter for security
Mozilla describes keeping Firefox current as a way to receive the latest features, security improvements, and website compatibility changes. An update package that is still downloading, staged for installation, or waiting for a restart has not yet changed the code running in the browser.
That is why a practical verification record should contain the installation channel, the date and time of the check, and the version displayed after restart. For a personal computer, the About Firefox or about:support value is the direct evidence available to the user. For a managed Windows ESR deployment, add DisplayVersion, the ESR comparison, and the Background Update task result.
A repeatable verification checklist
- Identify the channel: Mozilla installer, Linux distribution package, or Microsoft Store.
- Use the channel’s updater: About Firefox for a Mozilla-installed copy, the distribution package manager for Linux, or Microsoft Store for a Store installation.
- Complete the restart: select Restart to update Firefox when Firefox offers it, or reopen the browser after an external updater finishes.
- Record the running version: read it below the Firefox name in About Firefox.
- Cross-check when needed: read the same value under Application Basics at
about:support. - For Windows ESR administration: record DisplayVersion, compare it with Mozilla’s current ESR release, and inspect the Firefox Background Update scheduled task.
- Keep the evidence together: note the channel, version, and check time so a later support or compliance review can distinguish a pending restart from a completed installation.
What a successful result looks like
A successful personal update has three characteristics: Firefox used the updater belonging to its installation channel, Firefox restarted after the package was downloaded, and the reopened browser reports the expected version in About Firefox or about:support. A successful managed Windows check additionally shows a matching DisplayVersion and a functioning Firefox Background Update task for the organization’s ESR release.
