Update a domain’s registration contacts through the registrar or reseller that controls it—not through ICANN. Keep the registrant details accurate, use monitored contact information for technical notices, and retain control of the registrar account even if someone else manages the website.

What the domain contacts do—and who controls them

The registrant is the person or organization associated with the domain registration. Registrars may also provide administrative or technical contact fields, but the fields available and how they are used can differ by registrar and domain. Registration contacts are distinct from website hosting or server contacts: changing a registration record does not, by itself, change where a website is hosted.

For contact updates, the registrar is the place to start. ICANN’s registrant FAQ says: “Contact your Registrar to update your contact information. ICANN org does not (and cannot) verify or update your contact information. Only your Registrar or its Reseller can assist you with contact information updates.” See ICANN’s FAQ for domain name registrants or its information for domain name registrants.

How to update the details

  1. Find the registrar. Check the account where the domain was purchased or managed. If you do not know which registrar holds it, use ICANN’s registrant information page to find the lookup option.
  2. Sign in or contact support. In the domain’s management area, check who is listed as registrant and which administrative or technical contact fields are available. If the domain was bought through a reseller, that reseller may be the route to support.
  3. Enter current, monitored details. Correct outdated information. For technical notices, use an address that is checked reliably; where the registrar provides the option, ICANN policy allows the registrant or its representative to be designated as technical contact, or non-personal technical contact details to be used.
  4. Complete any verification request. Follow the registrar’s confirmation steps and watch the relevant inboxes for messages. There is no single confirmation screen or workflow shared by every registrar.
  5. Check the public record and privacy choices. Use ICANN Lookup to see what is displayed, then review the registrar’s current privacy or proxy terms. The public record may not show all the information the registrar holds.
  6. Secure account control. Keep the registrar login and recovery access under the registrant’s control, even when a developer or service provider handles routine domain work.

Which details should you use?

Registrant information

Use accurate information for the person or organization that holds the registration. ICANN’s WHOIS Data and Accuracy guidance and its 2023 guidance on keeping registration data accurate describe registrants’ responsibility to provide accurate details and update them when they change.

Under the RAA terms discussed in ICANN’s 2023 guidance, registrants are directed to correct and update changed contact details within seven days. That guidance also describes a 15-day period to respond to an accuracy inquiry; failure to update or respond can lead to registrar action, including suspension or cancellation. These periods are tied to the cited agreement and policy context, so do not assume identical rules apply to every domain extension worldwide.

Administrative and technical contacts

Use contact information that reaches someone able to act on domain issues. A monitored role-based email address, such as a technical-support inbox, can avoid tying operational notices to one employee’s personal address. Under ICANN’s Registration Data Policy, where a technical contact is provided, the registrant or its representative may be designated, or non-personal technical contact details may be used.

Registrars’ available fields and display practices can change as policy requirements evolve. Check the current account interface and registrar guidance for the specific domain rather than assuming every domain has a separate administrative-contact field.

Privacy and proxy services are not the same

Some registration information may appear in RDDS, commonly called WHOIS, or RDAP records. What the public can see depends on applicable policy and the registrar’s implementation. Review the public record and ask the registrar which fields its current privacy options affect; do not assume that privacy settings conceal every detail held by the registrar.

Option Registrant of record What to check
Privacy service The customer remains the registrant of record. Which alternate contact details are published, how communications are forwarded, and which terms apply.
Proxy service The proxy provider is the registrant of record and has the associated legal rights and responsibilities. Who receives and forwards communications, what responsibilities shift to the provider, and how the arrangement can be changed.

These distinctions are described in ICANN’s information on privacy and proxy services. The service’s published contact channel needs to remain reliable and monitored.

Changing the registrant or recovering access

If the domain is changing hands, contact the registrar about updating the registrant information or transferring the domain to another registrant. ICANN’s Change of Registrant information addresses specified changes to a registrant’s name, organization, email, and certain administrative email details. Not every contact edit follows the same process, and a registrant change may trigger policy-specific processing. Ask the registrar which steps apply to the domain before making the change.

If a developer or another provider registered the domain, ask that person to help restore appropriate account access and registrant-of-record details, and involve the registrar if needed. ICANN’s FAQ recommends retaining management credentials when domain duties are outsourced. A provider can help administer the domain without being the only party able to reach its registrar account.
