Update Destiny 2 through the platform or launcher where it is installed. Steam and Epic Games Store updates are controlled by their desktop launchers; the Microsoft Store version is updated through Microsoft Store and the Xbox PC app; PlayStation and Xbox consoles use their built-in update commands. If the game displays CAT, install the missing update. If it displays MARMOT, repair or verify the game files before escalating to more disruptive fixes.
This guide covers the current procedures, storage considerations, platform-specific download figures published by Bungie, and recovery steps for updates that do not appear or files that have become corrupted.

What changed with Destiny 2 updates in 2026?
Bungie released Update 9.7.0 on June 9, 2026. Bungie says Destiny 2 will not receive planned live-service content updates after that release, although a future hotfix may still be issued for game health and stability. The practical implication is that you should install the latest update offered for your platform rather than expect a regular stream of content patches.
An update can still be necessary when you launch the game, when a platform deploys a stability fix, or when your installed build no longer matches the current server version. The delivery method has not become universal: you must use the store or launcher that owns your installation.
#1 Best Overall
Before you start an update
- Identify the installation: Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store/Xbox PC app, PlayStation, and Xbox each use different controls.
- Close Destiny 2: A running game can prevent a launcher or console from applying an update.
- Allow enough free storage: The platform may need temporary working space in addition to the displayed download. Bungie warns that some updates can require a redownload, and a full reinstall needs room for the complete game.
- Check the network: A large download can pause if the connection drops or the device enters a power-saving state. Keep the device powered and connected until installation finishes.
- Do not use a historical download figure as a promise for a future patch: package size changes with the release and, in Bungie’s figures, with installed languages.
How to update Destiny 2 on Steam
Let Steam detect and download the update
- Exit Destiny 2.
- Restart the Steam client. For a complete restart on Windows, right-click the Steam icon in the notification-area system tray and choose the command that exits Steam, then open Steam again from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.
- Open Library and select Destiny 2. With automatic updates enabled, Steam should place the update in Downloads and begin downloading it.
- If automatic updates are disabled, open Downloads and start the Destiny 2 download manually when it appears.
- Wait for the download and installation to finish before launching the game.
If the update was released only moments ago and is not listed, restart Steam once more. Steam may need to refresh its content-server information before the package appears.
When Steam still does not show an update
First verify the files using the procedure below. If the update remains absent afterward, clear Steam’s download cache from Steam’s settings, restart the client, and check Downloads again. Clearing the cache can remove a stuck download state, but it does not replace file verification and does not delete the installed game.
How to verify Destiny 2 game files on Steam
File verification compares the local installation with Steam’s known files and downloads replacements for files that are missing or damaged. It is Bungie’s documented Steam repair step for MARMOT, the error associated with corrupted Destiny 2 files.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Quit Destiny 2 completely.
- In Steam, open Library.
- Right-click Destiny 2 and choose Properties.
- Select Local Files in the Properties window.
- Choose Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Let Steam complete its scan, repair, and any replacement download. The duration depends on the drive, connection, and amount of data that must be replaced.
- When Steam reports that the process has finished, close the Properties window and launch Destiny 2 again.
Verification can report that some files could not be validated and will be reacquired. That result is normal when Steam has found files that differ from its current copy; leave Steam open until the replacement download completes.
How to update Destiny 2 through Epic Games Store
Install the update
- Exit Destiny 2.
- Fully restart the Epic Games launcher. Close it from the system tray as well as from the main window, then reopen it.
- Open the launcher’s Downloads view and look for Destiny 2.
- If the update is listed, start or resume it and wait for installation to finish.
If no update appears, verify the game files from the Destiny 2 entry: open your Library, use the game’s options menu, choose Manage, and select Verify. Bungie’s troubleshooting guidance also notes that clearing the Epic launcher’s web cache can make a missing update appear. Restart the launcher after clearing the cache, then check Downloads again.

How to update Destiny 2 from Microsoft Store on PC
- Close Destiny 2 and the Xbox PC app.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Open the profile menu and choose Downloads and updates.
- Select Get updates and allow Microsoft Store to discover and install the Destiny 2 package.
- Open the Xbox PC app and go to My Collection followed by Manage Installs.
- Check Destiny 2’s entry for an available update and let the Xbox PC app finish the installation.
Bungie recommends enabling automatic updates in the Xbox PC app. Store and Xbox-app labels can change with app revisions, so use the installation that actually contains your copy of Destiny 2 rather than trying to apply Steam or Epic instructions.
How to update Destiny 2 on PlayStation
PlayStation update menus vary by console model and system-software version. Use the console’s normal game-update control and Bungie’s current PlayStation-specific support guide when the label differs.
- Quit Destiny 2.
- Highlight Destiny 2 on the console home screen or in the game library.
- Open the game’s options menu and choose the available Check for Update command, if shown.
- Allow the console to download and install the update before launching the game.
If the console does not offer an update, perform a complete shutdown rather than leaving it in rest mode, start it again, and repeat Check for Update. Clearing the console cache can help when the system still does not recognize a released package. Do not assume that a particular PlayStation menu path is identical across models.
How to update Destiny 2 on Xbox
Xbox menu wording also varies by model and system-software version. Use the built-in update command and Bungie’s current Xbox guide for the exact labels on your console.
- Quit Destiny 2.
- Open your games library and highlight Destiny 2.
- Open the game’s options or manage menu and choose Check for Update, if available.
- Install the offered package and wait for the queue to finish before starting the game.
When no package appears, fully turn off the console, restart it, and check again. Clear the console cache if the system continues to use an older build. Cache clearing is a troubleshooting step; it is not required for every normal update.

What the CAT error means and how to fix it
Bungie uses CAT to indicate that a newer Destiny 2 update is available than the one currently installed. CAT is therefore a version mismatch, not a diagnosis of damaged hardware.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Exit Destiny 2.
- Apply the update through the correct platform procedure: inspect Steam or Epic Downloads, use Microsoft Store and the Xbox PC app for a Microsoft Store installation, or run the console’s update check.
- Wait until the platform reports that installation is complete.
- Relaunch Destiny 2.
If CAT returns immediately, restart the launcher or console once more and check that the download did not pause or fail. On PC, verify the files after confirming that the update is not merely waiting in a hidden or paused queue.
What the MARMOT error means and how to repair it
Bungie’s definition is direct: MARMOT occurs when Destiny 2 game files have been corrupted and need to be repaired or verified. Start with the least destructive repair for your platform.
Steam
Use Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files, wait for any replacement download, and restart Destiny 2. This is the first repair action, not an optional diagnostic.
Epic Games Store
In the Epic Games Store Library, open Destiny 2’s options, select Manage, then Verify. Let the launcher replace damaged files before trying the game again.

Microsoft Store on PC
Check for updates in Microsoft Store and the Xbox PC app first. If your installation is shown in an Epic Games Store Library, use the Epic Manage → Verify path; do not apply that label to a copy installed by a different store.
PlayStation and Xbox
Quit Destiny 2, clear the console cache, restart the console, and try again. Exact cache procedures differ by model, so follow the current Bungie instructions for your console rather than using a procedure for another model.
If MARMOT continues
Bungie’s escalation guidance includes rebuilding the PlayStation database and clearing Xbox persistent storage. These are advanced steps for a persistent error, not routine update maintenance. Read the current Bungie MARMOT instructions before changing either setting. Bungie warns that a factory reset can remove everything from a drive unless the option to reset while keeping games is selected; treat factory reset as a last resort. If the error survives the platform repair steps and the documented escalation, a full uninstall and reinstall may be necessary.

Keep more free space than the download number suggests because the platform may unpack, stage, and replace files during installation. A console or PC that is nearly full can fail even when the displayed package appears smaller than the remaining capacity.
Update troubleshooting by symptom
The update is not listed
- Confirm that Destiny 2 is closed.
- Restart the launcher completely, including its system-tray process, or fully restart the console.
- Open the platform’s download queue and look for a paused, failed, or scheduled download.
- Use the platform’s update check again.
- On Steam, verify files and then consider clearing the download cache.
- On Epic, verify files and consider clearing the launcher’s web cache.
The download stops or repeatedly fails
- Check available storage and free additional space if necessary.
- Keep the device awake and connected to the network.
- Restart the launcher or console and resume the queue.
- Do not cancel a nearly finished installation unless the platform reports an unrecoverable error; cancellation can force another download.
The game updates but still will not launch
- Restart the platform after installation completes.
- On PC, run the relevant file-verification procedure for the store that owns the installation.
- On a console, clear the cache and retry.
- If MARMOT persists after repair and Bungie’s advanced steps, reserve a reinstall for last resort because it requires a substantial redownload and sufficient storage.
Choosing the right procedure
| Your situation | Start here | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Steam shows a normal update | Restart Steam and use Downloads. | The launcher delivers and installs the package. |
| Steam shows MARMOT or missing files | Properties → Local Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files. | Verification repairs the local installation. |
| Epic does not show the update | Restart Epic, inspect Downloads, then Manage → Verify. | Refreshes the launcher state and repairs discrepancies. |
| Microsoft Store/Xbox PC copy | Microsoft Store Downloads and updates → Get updates, then Xbox PC app My Collection → Manage Installs. | Both components can participate in delivery of the PC installation. |
| Console update missing | Use Check for Update, then fully restart the console. | Console software controls the package and may need a refreshed state. |
| Not enough free space | Free capacity before retrying. | Installation can require staging space or a redownload. |
When a reinstall is justified
Reinstalling Destiny 2 is not the first response to CAT or a one-time failed download. Use launcher verification or console cache repair first. Consider a full uninstall and reinstall only when MARMOT continues after the documented repair and escalation steps, or when the platform cannot complete a damaged installation. Confirm that the device has room for the entire game and the download, and expect the operation to take considerably longer than a normal hotfix.
The correct expectation after Update 9.7.0 is maintenance rather than scheduled new content: install the latest build your platform offers, repair local files when the error identifies corruption, and reserve disruptive recovery actions for persistent failures.
