The safest way to update curl and libcurl is to use your operating system’s package manager, keep the existing system copy when the platform manages one, and verify both the executable and the library that your applications load. Use a separate installation prefix when you need a newer upstream release than your distribution provides. On Windows, install the official archive beside the system copy rather than replacing it.
This guide covers inventory, package-manager updates, source builds, Windows checksum verification, PATH selection, application-level library checks, TLS considerations, rollback, and common failure modes. The curl command-line program and libcurl are related but are not interchangeable: updating one does not prove that every application is using the other.
What you are updating: curl versus libcurl
curl is the command-line transfer tool. libcurl is the library that programs link to or load at runtime. A package may contain the command-line executable, the shared library, header files, development metadata, or several of these as separate packages.

Running curl --version tells you which curl executable your shell started. It does not prove that an application loads that same libcurl. An application can use a distribution library, a private copy, a statically linked build, or a library supplied by a language runtime. Safe maintenance therefore has two verification targets:

- the executable selected by your shell or script;
- the libcurl binary and TLS backend selected by each consuming application.
The curl project’s release process packages and signs source code and tags the repository. The project does not generally ship curl/libcurl binaries for every operating system; official Windows binaries are the principal upstream binary distribution. This is why your distribution or a maintained package manager is normally the best update channel on Linux and macOS.
Choose an installation strategy before changing anything

Do not choose a source build merely because it appears to offer a newer number. A separate prefix adds responsibility for updates, TLS libraries, CA certificates, loader paths, and eventual removal.
Inventory the current installation first
Record what is installed before you modify it. This gives you a rollback target and exposes cases where several curl copies are already present.

curl --versionand save the complete output. It includes the release number, supported protocols, and the TLS backend reported by that executable. - Resolve the executable with
command -v curlon Unix-like systems. In PowerShell, useGet-Command curl. - Check whether your project uses libcurl through a package configuration file, CMake package, framework bundle, or a statically linked copy.
- Note the operating system release, CPU architecture, and whether the application is 32-bit, x64, or ARM64.
- Identify the CA certificate store and TLS backend your application expects. A new curl build can support different protocols or use a different certificate source.
Keep the old package, archive, or prefix until the new executable and every important application test pass. Do not delete a working copy during the initial installation.
Updating curl and libcurl on Linux
Use the distribution repository when it is recent enough
Linux distributions normally split the runtime and development components. Update both when you compile software against libcurl. Use your distribution’s ordinary update flow rather than downloading an unrelated binary archive.
Examples of the normal commands are:
- Debian or Ubuntu-family systems:
sudo apt update, followed bysudo apt install --only-upgrade curl. Install the matching development package supplied by your release when headers or linker metadata are required. - Fedora, RHEL, or compatible systems: use the release’s
dnfupdate command for curl and its development package. - Arch-based systems: use the normal synchronized full-system update rather than upgrading one core library in isolation.
Package names and commands differ by release. Confirm the candidate version with the package manager before accepting the transaction, and read any security or restart notices it reports.
Verify the command-line program and development files
- Run
command -v curlto confirm the path. - Run
curl --versionand check the version, TLS backend, and protocol list. - Ask the package manager which package owns that path and which version is installed.
- For a compiler build, check the selected metadata with
pkg-config --modversion libcurland inspectpkg-config --cflags --libs libcurlwhere your distribution provides pkg-config data. - Reconfigure and rebuild the application. A build directory may cache an older include path or library path, so a clean configuration is often necessary.
The development package can be newer or older than a separately installed runtime if you have mixed repositories. Avoid that state: headers, linker files, and the runtime library should come from one coherent package set unless you deliberately maintain an isolated prefix.

When the repository version is too old
If a required feature or fix is absent from the distribution repository, build the upstream source into a directory such as /opt/curl-<version> or a user-owned prefix. Do not overwrite /usr/bin/curl or the distribution’s libcurl.
Download a signed source archive from the curl project, verify its checksum and signature before extraction, and record the release number, configure options, compiler, and TLS backend. A typical Unix build sequence is:
./configure --prefix=/opt/curl-<version> --with-openssl
make
make test
sudo make installmake test is optional in the recipe but strongly recommended before exposing the installation to production applications. Replace --with-openssl only when you intentionally choose another supported TLS backend. The backend affects certificate handling and protocol capabilities.
Select the isolated copy deliberately
Prepend the new prefix’s bin directory to PATH for a shell, service, build job, or account that needs it. Use command -v curl and curl --version again in that exact context. For an application, configure its include and library directories explicitly rather than relying on a user’s interactive shell.

Shared-library discovery may also need configuration. On Linux this can involve the loader cache or an application-specific runtime path; setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH globally can make unrelated programs load the wrong library, so prefer a per-service configuration or an embedded runtime path where possible.
Updating curl and libcurl on macOS
Leave Apple’s system copy intact
macOS includes a system curl/libcurl that can lag the upstream project. Apple tools may depend on that copy and its integration with the operating system. Treat the system executable as managed infrastructure: do not replace files under system-protected locations and do not remove the Apple copy to make room for a newer one.
Install a current user-managed copy
Use a maintained macOS package manager or a separate prefix. The official curl catalog lists macOS packages from Homebrew and other providers, as well as Apple’s source line. A package-manager installation keeps files grouped and makes upgrades and removal predictable.

After installation, locate the package-manager binary and place its bin directory before the system directories in the relevant PATH. Apple-silicon and Intel systems commonly use different package-manager prefixes, so obtain the path from the package manager rather than copying a path from another Mac.

- Open a new shell, or reload the shell configuration that defines
PATH. - Run
command -v curland confirm that the result is the user-managed path. - Run
curl --versionand record the version, protocols, and TLS backend. - For a compiled application, inspect the library path selected by the linker and by the dynamic loader; do not assume the shell’s curl selection changes an already-built application.
Keep shell, build, and application selection separate
A terminal can use the newer curl while a launch agent, IDE, daemon, or GUI application still sees the system PATH. Set PATH and library settings in the service or build configuration that actually starts the program. If a build uses CMake or pkg-config, point it at the intended prefix and clear the previous configuration cache.
macOS dynamic-library inspection commonly uses otool -L on an executable or library. Check that the reported libcurl path belongs to the intended prefix and that the application’s TLS and CA-store assumptions remain valid.
Updating curl and libcurl on Windows
Use the official archive and match the architecture
The curl project’s Windows page currently lists curl 8.22.0, build 8.22.0_1, dated 2026-09-02. It provides x64 and ARM64 downloads, SHA-256 values, and signature links. The page lists supported Windows versions as Vista, 7, 8, 10, and 11. Select the archive that matches the application and operating-system architecture.

The release number and checksums are tied to that page’s 2026-09-02 listing. Recheck the official page when you install a later release; do not reuse these values for a different archive.

- Download the archive and its signature material from the official Windows page.
- In PowerShell, calculate the digest with
Get-FileHash .curl-archive.zip -Algorithm SHA256(use the actual downloaded filename). - Compare the result character-for-character with the value published for your architecture.
- Verify the project signature using the project’s documented signing key and procedure when your security policy requires authenticity verification in addition to integrity.
- Stop if the checksum or signature does not match. Delete the file and download it again from the official source.
Extract beside, not over, the Windows copy
Extract curl to a dedicated directory such as C:Toolscurl8.22.0. Do not copy its executable over a Windows-managed curl file. The curl FAQ warns: “If you were to delete the file or replace it with a newer version downloaded from the curl website, then Windows Update ceases to work on your system.”
Add the new directory to PATH deliberately. For an account-wide setting, use Windows Environment Variables; for a single PowerShell session, prepend the directory in the session’s $env:Path. Open a new terminal after changing persistent PATH values, then run:

Get-Command curl
curl --versionIf another directory appears first, either reorder PATH or call the intended executable by its full path. Avoid silently changing PATH for services that require the Windows-managed copy.
Install libcurl for a Windows build
Applications that need headers and libraries should use a consistent dependency method. curl documents the Microsoft vcpkg port as vcpkg install curl[tool]. Configure the compiler and linker with that installation’s triplet and paths, then confirm which DLL or static library is packaged with the application. A newer command-line executable in PATH does not change a program that was already linked against another libcurl.
Building from source without taking over the system
Use a signed source archive and a recorded prefix
Source builds are appropriate when the platform package lacks a required feature, release, or TLS choice. Download the signed upstream archive, verify its checksum and signature, and keep the archive with your build records. Choose a versioned prefix such as /opt/curl-8.22.0 rather than a generic directory that obscures which release is installed.
Record TLS and feature choices
The configure command determines the TLS backend and other capabilities. Record the complete command line, compiler, enabled protocols, CA-bundle location, and whether the build is shared or static. Two curl binaries with the same version number can behave differently when they use different TLS backends or certificate stores.
Test before switching consumers
Run the project’s test target where practical, then exercise the protocols and certificate chains your application actually needs. Install only after those checks pass. Keep the old prefix and make the new one selectable through PATH or an application-specific runtime configuration. This makes rollback a path change instead of an emergency overwrite.

Verification must happen at the application boundary. Use the platform’s normal dependency inspection tools and then run an integration test.
- Linux: inspect the executable with
ldd /path/to/applicationwhere appropriate, and check the resolved libcurl path. Also inspect the build system’s include and link flags. - macOS: use
otool -L /path/to/applicationand verify the referenced libcurl install name and location. - Windows: inspect the executable’s imported DLLs with the tooling used by your build environment, such as the Visual Studio dependency inspection tools, and confirm which libcurl DLL is found at runtime.
- Any platform: check the application’s own version or diagnostic output if it exposes one, then run an HTTPS request against a test endpoint, a certificate chain that matters to your service, and any required HTTP, FTP, or other protocol feature.
Static linking requires extra care: dependency tools may not show libcurl because its code is inside the application. In that case, verify the build manifest, compiler command, package lock, and application diagnostics, then test the resulting binary.

TLS, protocols, and CA certificates can change after an update
Do not judge an update only by its version number. Compare the old and new curl --version output. Pay particular attention to:
- TLS backend, such as OpenSSL, Schannel, Secure Transport, rustls, or another configured backend;
- protocols and features enabled in the build;
- the location and format of the CA certificate store;
- proxy, IPv6, compression, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, and authentication support required by your workload.
A successful command-line request does not prove that an application has the same CA store or backend. Test the application under its service account and environment, not only from your interactive shell.
Security checks and rollback
Check advisories before selecting a target
Review the curl security database and the release notes for the target release. Confirm that the version addresses the issue you care about and that your operating system and TLS dependencies support it. Prefer signed archives and verify checksums before extraction.

Keep an immediate recovery path
- For a package-manager update, retain the package-manager’s previous package or snapshot capability.
- For a source build, keep the old versioned prefix and its recorded configuration.
- For Windows, leave the previous directory untouched until the new executable and applications pass validation.
- Record the old PATH, loader settings, and application configuration before changing them.
If validation fails, restore the old PATH or application-specific library setting, restart the affected service, and then investigate the mismatch. Do not “fix” a failed test by deleting the old installation before you understand which copy was loaded.
Troubleshooting common update failures
The version did not change
Run command -v curl or Get-Command curl again. A shell may have cached a command location, or an older directory may precede the new one in PATH. Start a fresh shell and call the intended executable by its full path.
The CLI is new but the application is old
Inspect the application’s dependencies. It may use a system library, a bundled DLL, a framework copy, or static linking. Update the application’s development dependency and rebuild it; changing PATH alone cannot relink an existing binary.
HTTPS requests now fail certificate validation
Compare the TLS backend and CA-store behavior before and after the update. Check the service account’s certificate environment, proxy settings, and any explicit CA-file or CA-directory configuration. Do not disable certificate verification as a workaround.

Confirm that the development package or isolated prefix is installed, then inspect pkg-config, CMake cache entries, compiler include paths, and linker paths. Remove stale build-cache entries and configure again against one intended installation.
Windows finds the wrong executable or DLL
Use Get-Command curl and inspect the application’s DLL search order. Reorder PATH for the intended shell or configure the application directory explicitly. Keep the Windows-managed copy in place; do not overwrite it.
