For a self-hosted Coolify installation, a normal update replaces the Coolify control plane and briefly restarts that control plane. It does not update, redeploy, or migrate the applications, databases, services, or servers that Coolify manages. The safest sequence is to create and export an instance backup, preserve /data/coolify/source/.env (especially its APP_KEY), review the release notes, let active deployments finish, perform the update during a maintenance window, and verify every connection afterward.
Coolify Cloud is updated by the Coolify team. The dashboard and terminal procedures below apply to self-hosted instances. A PostgreSQL major-version migration is a separate database operation with different backups, downtime, and rollback requirements; it is not part of an ordinary Coolify update.
What a Coolify update actually changes
The self-hosted control plane
The documented update changes the version of the self-hosted Coolify control plane. That is the dashboard, API, job orchestration, and configuration layer you use to deploy and administer resources. During the update, this control plane restarts, so the dashboard is temporarily unavailable.
The update does not update the software running in your managed resources. Your application images, application containers, databases, other services, and operating systems on managed servers remain at their existing versions unless you separately ask Coolify to change them.

What happens to running applications
Because the operation targets the control plane rather than each resource, it is not an application upgrade or redeploy. Existing workloads are not selected for an update by this procedure. Deployment actions already in progress should be allowed to finish before the maintenance window, however: the dashboard and its job runner will be unavailable while the control plane restarts, so starting a deployment at that moment can leave you without normal status or control.
What does not happen to PostgreSQL
A normal Coolify update does not migrate the internal PostgreSQL database to a newer PostgreSQL major version. Treat an intentional major-version change as its own maintenance project, with a database dump, volume safeguards, and a tested rollback path.

Pre-update safety checklist
Complete these checks before opening the update screen or running an updater from SSH.
- Confirm the operating model. These instructions are for self-hosted Coolify. Coolify Cloud updates are managed by the Coolify team.
- Record the current state. Note the current Coolify version, the servers connected to the instance, and any deployments or maintenance already underway. This gives you a comparison point after the restart.
- Read the release notes for the version you intend to install. Look for required intermediate versions, configuration changes, known migration work, and any release-specific instructions. Do not assume that the newest available entry is suitable for every older installation.
- Drain active deployments. Wait until running deployments and other long-running control-plane jobs report completion. If a deployment cannot be completed safely, postpone the Coolify update rather than starting it while work is active.
- Create an instance backup. Use Coolify’s instance-backup facility before changing the control plane. A backup is the recovery point for the Coolify instance, not merely a copy of one application.
- Move important backup material off the server. An on-server backup cannot protect you from loss of that server, its storage, or its credentials. Copy the backup to storage you can access independently and verify that the copy can be read.
- Preserve the environment file. Keep a protected copy of
/data/coolify/source/.env. It contains the instanceAPP_KEY, which is needed when recovering the Coolify installation. Treat this file as sensitive secret material; do not publish it in a ticket or repository. - Choose a maintenance window. The dashboard will be unavailable while the control plane restarts. Schedule the work when operators do not need to start deployments, inspect jobs, or change resources.
- Prepare access. If you will use the terminal, confirm SSH access and leave yourself a second way to reach the server. Avoid closing the session while the updater is still running.
Update from the self-hosted dashboard
The dashboard route is the simplest method when your instance is healthy and the available release is compatible with your installation.
- Open the update page. Sign in to the self-hosted Coolify dashboard and go to Settings → Updates.
- Check the offered version. Compare it with the release notes you reviewed. If the notes require an intermediate release or a manual action, complete that requirement instead of clicking through blindly.
- Confirm the recovery point. Make sure the instance backup finished and that the important backup material, including the protected
.envcopy, exists outside the Coolify server. - Start the update. Use the available update action on the Updates page. This starts a control-plane update; it does not ask your applications or databases to upgrade.
- Wait through the restart. The dashboard may stop responding while the new control plane is installed and restarted. Do not repeatedly start another update because the login page is temporarily unavailable.
- Verify before resuming normal work. Once the dashboard returns, complete the post-update checks below before launching a new deployment.
If the dashboard cannot reach the update service, the instance is in a failed state, or the release notes call for terminal administration, use the current official terminal procedure for the selected release rather than improvising an image pull. Pulling an application image is not a substitute for updating the Coolify control plane.

Update from the terminal
Terminal administration is useful when the dashboard is unavailable, when you need an auditable SSH session, or when the release instructions explicitly require it. The exact updater procedure can vary by Coolify release, so follow the current official procedure for the version you selected rather than copying a command intended for a different release.

/data/coolify/source/.envare available before changing anything. - Review the release-specific instructions again. Make sure the command or script you are about to run is for a self-hosted control-plane update, not for an application, service, or database.
- Run the documented updater. Start it from the SSH terminal in accordance with the selected release’s instructions.
- Keep the terminal open. Wait until the updater explicitly reports completion. Disconnecting early can hide an error and make recovery harder.
- Save the upgrade log. Coolify writes a timestamped log under
/data/coolify/source/, for exampleupgrade-2026-07-11-12-00-00.log. Preserve the newest log with the backup and record the date, installed version, and any warnings. - Run the verification checklist. Do not treat a returned SSH prompt as proof that the dashboard, resources, and server connections are healthy.
Post-update verification
Use the first minutes after the restart to test the control plane systematically.
- Open the dashboard. Confirm that it loads without an error page, authentication loop, or missing static assets.
- Confirm the version. Check that the dashboard displays the version you intended to install, not the previous version or an incomplete state.
- Inspect projects. Open the projects list and at least one project you actively operate. Verify that environments, deployments, and resource entries are present.
- Inspect resources. Check that the applications, databases, and services you expect are still listed with their existing configuration. The normal update should not have changed their software versions.
- Validate the local server. Go to Servers → localhost and run the validation. A successful result confirms that the updated control plane can still administer its local Docker host.
- Validate other managed servers. Open each remote server and confirm that its connection remains healthy. A control-plane update can complete even when a particular server credential, network route, or agent has a separate problem.
- Check recent job history. Look for failed or stuck jobs created around the maintenance window and compare their timestamps with the saved upgrade log.
- Perform a controlled smoke test. If your change policy allows it, trigger a small, reversible deployment or inspect an existing health check. Do this only after the dashboard and server validations succeed.
Keep the timestamped upgrade log even when everything works. It records which updater run produced the current state and is valuable if a later deployment exposes a compatibility problem.
How to recover if the updated control plane is unusable
Use the known-good instance backup
If the dashboard remains unusable, the updater reports an unrecoverable error, or critical configuration is missing, stop making repeated changes and use the known-good instance backup. Keep the newest upgrade log with the incident record. Recovery requires the backup data and the preserved /data/coolify/source/.env, including its APP_KEY.
Do not rely on a dump that exists only on the affected server. If the server’s disk, Docker volumes, or filesystem is damaged, that copy may be unavailable at the moment you need it.

Understand the limit of a downgrade
Downgrading Coolify replaces the version of the self-hosted control plane. It does not restore the earlier database state. A downgrade therefore is not a substitute for restoring a compatible backup: the older control-plane code may still be pointed at data that was changed by the newer version. Restore the known-good instance state when the database state also has to be rolled back.
Do not retry blindly
Before a second update attempt, identify whether the failure is a transient service issue, a release prerequisite, a storage problem, or a database compatibility problem. The timestamped log and the release notes should guide the next action. Repeated retries can overwrite useful evidence or create a state that is harder to restore.
PostgreSQL major-version migrations are a separate operation
Coolify’s internal PostgreSQL database has its own lifecycle. The ordinary Coolify update leaves the PostgreSQL major version alone. If you deliberately need a newer supported major version, plan and execute the migration separately from the control-plane update.
Before starting a migration
- Confirm that the
coolify-dbcontainer is running. - Print its current
server_versionand record the result. - Choose a target that is a higher supported numeric major version. Do not use an arbitrary number simply because it is newer.
- Copy the database backup outside the Coolify server and retain the protected
/data/coolify/source/.envwith itsAPP_KEY. - Schedule downtime for the Coolify dashboard and make sure nobody is starting deployments or changing resources.
The version check can be performed in PostgreSQL with SELECT server_version;. Record both the current and target majors in the maintenance notes so that a rollback decision is unambiguous.
Run the supplied migration procedure
For a supported deliberate migration, run:
/data/coolify/source/upgrade-postgres.sh <target-major>Keep the shell open until the script finishes. The procedure stops the Coolify application container, creates a compressed pg_dumpall backup under /data/coolify/backups/internal-postgres/, creates and validates a new PostgreSQL volume and container, writes rollback metadata, and starts the stack with the new database.

Those actions are different from a normal control-plane update: they change the database engine major version and create new storage. Never delete the previous volume or rollback metadata merely because the new container starts.
Verify the migration
- Confirm that the database reports the intended target major version.
- Open the Coolify dashboard and check that authentication and normal navigation work.
- Confirm that projects and resources are present.
- Validate Servers → localhost and then each managed server.
- Review the migration output and retain the compressed dump, rollback metadata, and logs.
Roll back a PostgreSQL migration
While the previous volume and rollback metadata remain available, the documented rollback command is:

Coolify CLI updates are independent
The Coolify CLI is a separate client from the self-hosted Coolify control plane. Updating one does not update the other.

coolify context verifyThe CLI update leaves its configuration file and saved contexts unchanged. You still need to update the self-hosted dashboard separately if your goal is to change the Coolify control-plane version.
Common failure modes and practical responses
The dashboard is unavailable longer than expected
Wait for the updater to finish before assuming failure. If you used SSH, inspect the live output and the newest upgrade-*.log file. Do not launch a second update from another session. If the log shows an unrecoverable error, use the instance backup and preserved environment file rather than repeatedly restarting containers.
A deployment was running when maintenance began
Allow the job to reach a clear completed or failed state if possible. Once the dashboard returns, inspect job history and the application itself before retrying. The control-plane update did not intentionally upgrade the application, so any application-side issue needs to be diagnosed as a deployment or workload problem rather than assumed to be a Coolify version change.
Localhost or a remote server fails validation
First confirm that the dashboard version and projects are intact. Then inspect the affected server’s connection details, network reachability, credentials, and Docker availability independently of the control-plane update. A failed server validation does not by itself prove that the Coolify update rolled back or corrupted the project data.
The recovery process asks for a missing application key
Locate the protected copy of /data/coolify/source/.env. Its APP_KEY is part of the instance’s recovery material. If that file was never copied and the server is lost, recovery may not be able to reconstruct the original encrypted state.
A PostgreSQL migration must be reversed
Do not use an ordinary Coolify downgrade as a database rollback. Keep the previous PostgreSQL volume and rollback metadata, run /data/coolify/source/upgrade-postgres.sh rollback while those artifacts remain available, and then repeat the full verification sequence.
