A safe Cisco Nexus upgrade starts with the exact switch PID, current NX-OS release, operating mode, and a Cisco-validated source-to-target path. There is no universal Nexus upgrade command and no blanket promise of zero downtime. Use the release guide for your platform, confirm the pair in Cisco’s Upgrade and ISSU Matrix, prepare for the impact that the matrix reports, and verify both the new software and the services that depend on the switch.

Why the model and release pair come first

Nexus procedures differ by hardware family, software train, and operating mode. A Nexus 9000 running standalone NX-OS is not interchangeable with a Nexus 9000 running ACI, and a command documented for a Nexus 3000 release may not apply to a 9000 or to another release. Before planning a change, record:

  • The complete product identifier (PID) and hardware model.
  • The running NX-OS release and any active maintenance release.
  • Whether the switch is in standalone NX-OS or ACI mode.
  • Whether it is a single device, a vPC pair, a fabric member, or another redundant role.
  • The interfaces, routing adjacencies, port channels, and applications that rely on it.
  • The configuration backup, boot variables, and a recovery path that is usable if the upgrade does not complete.

Cisco’s current Nexus 9000 Release 10.6(x) upgrade guide was updated on August 23, 2026. Cisco publishes separate documentation for Nexus 3000 families and other platforms. Select the guide for the exact family and target train rather than treating the 10.6(x) document as a universal procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operating mode matters as much as the chassis label. A standalone NX-OS workflow, an ACI fabric workflow, and a vPC-member workflow can have different sequencing and validation requirements. If the switch is managed by a controller or participates in a fabric, include the fabric’s compatibility rules and maintenance procedure rather than applying a standalone command list.

Choose a supported source-to-target path

Use the current Cisco guide and the Nexus 9000/3000 Upgrade and ISSU Matrix, where that matrix covers your platform. Enter the actual current and target releases and confirm all of the following before scheduling work:

  • The PID is supported on the target release.
  • The direct source-to-target transition is validated, or the guide lists required intermediate releases.
  • The selected installation method is supported for that pair.
  • Feature restrictions, topology restrictions, and release caveats are understood.
  • The image is available for the exact hardware and operating mode.

The matrix is a compatibility and caveat reference, not a recommendation to run the newest release automatically. Its page reports an update date of December 18, 2023; inspect its live entries and the release-specific guide immediately before an operational change because supported paths can change.

Do not infer support from a nearby release number or from another PID in the same family. Confirm whether an intermediate hop is mandatory, whether a particular feature must be disabled or upgraded first, and whether the target image supports the installed line cards, supervisors, optics, and expansion modules. Save a copy or export of the matrix result with the change record so the approved path is unambiguous.

ISSU versus a disruptive upgrade

In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU) is a method, not a guarantee that users will see no interruption. Cisco describes the default upgrade process as disruptive. The matrix distinguishes ISSU from disruptive upgrades and identifies Narrowly Disruptive ISSU (ND ISSU) support only for Nexus 9300 top-of-rack switches in the combinations where it is explicitly listed. Eligibility depends on the exact PID, source release, target release, features, and topology.

Method When it can be used Traffic and reload expectation What to confirm
ISSU Only for a source-to-target and hardware combination that the Cisco matrix and release guide mark as supported. Designed to reduce disruption, but the documented procedure and topology determine the actual impact. Feature restrictions, redundancy requirements, supported neighbors, and any reload stages.
ND ISSU Only where the matrix explicitly lists it; Cisco identifies support for Nexus 9300 top-of-rack switches in qualifying combinations. Narrowly disruptive rather than universally hitless. Exact 9300 PID, release pair, feature set, and matrix caveats.
Disruptive or standard installation When ISSU is not listed for the pair or when the design cannot satisfy ISSU prerequisites. Plan for a reload and an outage for traffic using the device unless redundancy carries it. Maintenance window, alternate paths, boot and recovery plan, and post-reload validation.

Do not describe an upgrade as zero-downtime merely because the switch family supports ISSU. If the matrix reports a disruptive process, communicate that impact and test failover through the neighboring devices before the window.

Compare methods on four practical axes: validated hardware and release compatibility, expected traffic impact and reload behavior, feature and topology constraints, and recovery requirements. A redundant topology may carry traffic during a reload, but only if the alternate links, peer state, and control-plane adjacencies are healthy. Treat every ISSU prerequisite as a go/no-go condition; a failed prerequisite is a reason to reschedule or choose the documented disruptive method, not to force the installer.

Plan the change before copying an image

Build a pre-change baseline

Capture the operational state that you will compare after the upgrade. The exact commands depend on the release and design, but the baseline should include the running version, module or supervisor state, interface and port-channel status, routing and switching adjacencies, vPC or fabric health where applicable, and representative application reachability. Record alarms and known faults so that they are not mistaken for upgrade failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include timestamps and the identity of the person collecting each snapshot. For critical links, note which physical members are forwarding and which neighbor owns the active gateway or control-plane role. A baseline that only records a version string cannot reveal a suspended port channel, a missing route, or a peer that failed to rejoin.

Set the recovery conditions

  • Keep a known-good configuration and document how it will be restored.
  • Confirm console or out-of-band access in case in-band connectivity is lost.
  • Reserve enough maintenance time for image transfer, checks, installation, reboot stages, and service validation.
  • Identify who can stop the change and who can open a Cisco support case.
  • Write down the supported rollback or downgrade path separately. Never assume that reversing the image filename is a valid downgrade.

Check redundancy and dependencies

Map links that will leave service during a reload and verify that alternate paths are actually forwarding. A redundant pair can still experience an outage if both members depend on a feature or release combination that is not supported during the transition. Plan one device at a time only when the Cisco procedure and your topology support that sequence.

Tell application owners what they should test and when. Management access, DNS or DHCP relay, storage paths, east-west application flows, and north-south routing can recover at different times. Define a stop point if a critical adjacency or service does not return, and keep the escalation contact available throughout the window.

Stage the correct image and verify its integrity

Obtain the image through Cisco’s software distribution channel for the exact PID and release. Before installation, make sure the switch can reach the file server, the transfer completed without truncation, and bootflash or the applicable storage has sufficient free space. Do not proceed with an image selected solely because its version number is newer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Image verification is release-specific. For example, the Nexus 9000 Release 9.3(x) guide documents an MD5 check with:

show file bootflash:<IMAGE-NAME> md5sum

Compare the resulting value with the checksum published for that exact image on Cisco Software Download. The command and algorithm in that example are not a universal rule for every Nexus release or image type; follow the matching guide if it specifies a different verification method. A checksum mismatch is a stop condition: delete the incomplete or altered file, transfer it again, and repeat the documented check.

Check the filename, file size, and storage location against the guide before running the checksum. Keep the published checksum and your calculated value in the change record. If a transfer repeatedly fails, investigate file-server reachability, available storage, and the transfer method rather than trying to install a partial file.

Run release-appropriate prechecks

Prechecks identify incompatibilities, logged conditions, and whether the installer expects a disruptive operation. Cisco’s Nexus 3000 Release 9.3(x) documentation gives these examples:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • show incompatibility system — reports incompatibilities relevant to the planned software change.
  • show logging level — helps review logging configuration and conditions that may need attention.
  • show install all impact — analyzes the installation and describes whether it is disruptive and whether a reboot is required.

These are examples tied to that release family, not a promise that every Nexus accepts the same syntax or reports the same fields. Use the commands named in your platform’s guide. Resolve a reported incompatibility, unsupported feature, storage issue, or required reboot decision before starting the installation. Do not suppress an interactive check merely to automate a prompt.

Save the complete precheck output, including warnings that appear informational. Compare the impact analysis with the maintenance plan: if the installer says a reboot is required or the operation is disruptive, update the outage communication and confirm that alternate paths are ready. If the analysis cannot complete, stop and resolve the underlying condition instead of treating a missing result as approval.

Perform the installation from the exact Cisco guide

The install sequence varies by platform and release. Cisco’s current Nexus 9000 Release 10.6(x) documentation describes standard and enhanced ISSU processes, while other families use different workflows. Follow the guide’s sequence and let its impact analysis determine whether the procedure can continue.

  1. Confirm the selected image, checksum result, available storage, and current configuration backup.
  2. Run the documented compatibility and impact checks and save their output.
  3. Review every warning, including feature or topology restrictions, before accepting the installation.
  4. Start the installation using the command and options specified for the exact release. Do not substitute a command from another Nexus family or use an option that skips validation.
  5. Monitor the documented status output through image activation, supervisor or module transitions, and any reload stages.
  6. Keep console or out-of-band access available until the switch returns to a stable management state.

If the installer reports a failure, stop rather than repeatedly retrying. Preserve the status and log output, note the stage at which it stopped, and use the release guide’s recovery procedure or Cisco support process.

Do not interrupt power or manually reload the device unless the applicable guide explicitly directs that action. During a long transition, record the time of each state change and any peer or monitoring alerts. Those details help distinguish a normal reload stage from a stalled installation and give TAC a precise failure timeline.

Verify the new software after the switch returns

Confirm the running release

Use the platform-appropriate version check. Cisco’s Nexus 9000 Release 7.x procedure uses show version to verify the required software. Cisco guidance for covered Nexus 3000 and 3100 cases also uses show module to inspect module state. Compare the displayed version and module status with the target release and the expected hardware inventory; a successful reload alone does not prove that the intended image is running.

Inspect installation status and failure details

Where supported, run:

  • show install all status to review the recorded installation state.
  • show install all failure-reason to identify a reported installation failure.

Those commands are documented for particular Nexus 3000 guidance and may not exist or present identical output on another release. Use the equivalent status and failure commands named by your guide, and save the output with the change record.

Validate services, not just the version string

Compare the post-change state with the pre-change baseline:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Expected physical interfaces and port channels are up and bundled correctly.
  • VLAN, spanning-tree, vPC, fabric, or other relevant control-plane relationships are healthy.
  • Routing neighbors have re-established and advertise the expected networks.
  • Switching adjacencies and gateway functions are present where the design requires them.
  • Monitoring shows no new critical alarms or repeated interface and control-plane errors.
  • Representative hosts, applications, and management paths are reachable through the switch.

Test both directions of important flows when possible. A switch can report the correct NX-OS version while a missing adjacency, suspended port channel, or policy incompatibility is still affecting traffic.

Allow enough observation time to catch delayed failures. Check that neighbors remain established after normal timers expire, that port channels do not flap repeatedly, and that monitoring does not show a new pattern of errors. For redundant systems, validate each member and the peer relationship rather than checking only the device that was upgraded last.

What to do when verification fails

The target version is not running

Do not immediately install another image. Preserve show version, module state, boot variables, installation status, and relevant logs. Check the release guide for the documented boot-selection and recovery behavior, then contact Cisco support if the device is in an unexpected state.

The install reports a failure

Capture show install all status and show install all failure-reason where those commands are supported. The Nexus 3000 guide also identifies show tech-support as information that can be supplied to Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) when reporting a problem. Include the exact PID, source and target releases, image filename, checksum result, precheck output, failure stage, and topology impact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The version is correct but traffic is unhealthy

Treat this as a service-recovery problem, not a successful change. Compare interfaces, port channels, neighbors, policies, and application paths with the baseline. Check whether the target release changes a feature requirement or whether a neighboring device failed to re-form an adjacency. Follow the release-specific troubleshooting and rollback guidance; do not improvise a downgrade.

The image cannot be verified or transferred

Stop the change. Confirm the file came from the correct Cisco software page, recalculate the checksum using the method in the applicable guide, and verify storage capacity and file-server reachability. Transfer a fresh copy rather than proceeding with a mismatch.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Close the change only after an evidence check

A defensible completion record contains the PID and operating mode, original and target releases, selected matrix path, installation method, impact analysis, image checksum result, precheck output, installation status, post-upgrade version and module state, and service-validation results. Record any warnings that remain and the owner responsible for follow-up.

For a disruptive upgrade, close the window only after traffic has returned over the expected paths and application owners have confirmed reachability. For ISSU or ND ISSU, perform the same checks; reduced interruption does not remove the need to verify control-plane and forwarding health.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Retain the evidence long enough to support incident review and audit requirements. If a warning remains open, document its disposition and a follow-up date rather than marking the change fully clean. The final record should let another engineer reconstruct what was installed, what Cisco path authorized it, and how service recovery was demonstrated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every Cisco Nexus 9000 upgrade eligible for ISSU?

No. ISSU depends on the exact PID, source release, target release, features, and topology. Check the Cisco Upgrade and ISSU Matrix and the release guide for that combination. ND ISSU is listed only for qualifying Nexus 9300 top-of-rack combinations, not as a blanket Nexus 9000 capability.

How much downtime should be scheduled?

Schedule according to the impact analysis for the specific image and topology. Cisco describes the default upgrade process as disruptive, so plan for a reload and traffic interruption unless the documented path and your redundancy design support ISSU. Even ISSU or ND ISSU can have reload stages or narrowly disruptive events.

Can I use the same upgrade commands on Nexus 3000 and Nexus 9000 switches?

Do not assume so. Cisco publishes family- and release-specific guides. Commands such as show incompatibility system, show install all impact, and show install all status are documented examples for particular releases and may differ elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What proves that an upgrade succeeded?

Use the platform-appropriate version and module checks, review installation status and failure information, and compare interfaces, port channels, adjacencies, redundancy relationships, alarms, and application reachability with the pre-change baseline. A correct NX-OS version alone is insufficient.

What should I send Cisco TAC after a failed installation?

Provide the exact PID, operating mode, source and target releases, image filename and checksum result, precheck and impact output, installation status, failure reason, relevant logs, and a description of topology and traffic impact. Where supported, Cisco’s Nexus 3000 guidance identifies show tech-support as useful information for TAC.

Can I downgrade by pointing the switch at the old image?

Not safely by assumption. Downgrade support, sequencing, and caveats are separate from the upgrade path. Consult the exact release guide and matrix, preserve the failed-install evidence, and follow Cisco’s documented recovery or support process.

The Bottom Line

The safe Nexus upgrade is the one Cisco validates for your exact PID and source-to-target release pair. Treat ISSU as conditional, plan for the impact reported by the installer, verify the image before activation, and close the change only after both the target NX-OS version and dependent network services are healthy.
