The safest way to receive browser security fixes is to install the latest version offered for your device, then complete the required relaunch, restart, or app-store installation. On a computer, Chrome and Edge expose an About page that checks immediately; Firefox uses platform-specific instructions; Safari arrives through Apple software updates. On phones and tablets, Chrome and Firefox are updated in the app store, while Safari is updated with iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS.

How browser security updates are delivered

Browsers use three main delivery systems. A built-in updater downloads files in the background and waits for you to close and reopen the browser. An app store downloads and installs the mobile app package. An operating-system updater delivers Safari because Safari’s supported version is tied to Apple’s system software.

A download alone does not always mean the fix is active. Look for a button such as Relaunch or Restart, select it, and allow the browser to reopen. If an app-store update is listed, tap Update and wait for the store to finish. Do not rely on a version number copied from another platform: browser releases and supported operating systems differ by device.

Why the update path differs by device

The same browser can have different maintenance steps on a computer and a phone. Desktop browsers generally contain their own updater and an About page that can check immediately. Mobile browsers are distributed as apps, so the Google Play Store or Apple App Store controls downloading, installation, and automatic-update settings. Safari is different again: Apple distributes its browser changes with supported macOS, iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS updates.

#1 Best Overall

This also explains why an update may be available on one device but not another. A release must match the device’s operating system and hardware support. Apple’s security-release records list Safari releases alongside the macOS versions they support, while Mozilla documents a separate support path for older macOS systems. Always identify the browser, operating system, and device before judging whether an update is missing.

Update Google Chrome

Windows, Mac, Linux, and other computers

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Click the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
  3. Choose Help, then About Google Chrome.
  4. Leave the About page open while Chrome checks for an update. If a download starts, wait for it to complete.
  5. Click Relaunch when the button appears. Chrome closes and reopens with the update applied.

Chrome normally downloads updates in the background and applies them when the browser is closed and reopened. The About page is the direct way to trigger a check when you want to confirm the state immediately. If Chrome reports that the operating system is unsupported, the browser may be unable to move to newer releases until the system itself is upgraded. Check the computer’s operating-system requirements before repeatedly trying the browser updater.

A pending Relaunch button is meaningful: it indicates that Chrome has obtained an update but has not yet switched the running browser to that build. Save documents in web apps, close downloads that are still in progress, and then relaunch. After Chrome opens again, return to Help > About Google Chrome to confirm that the pending action has disappeared.

Android

  1. Open Google Play Store.
  2. Tap your account or profile icon.
  3. Open Manage apps & device and the available-updates list.
  4. Find Chrome and tap Update. If the store offers an Update all control, you can use it, but check that Chrome is included.
  5. Open Chrome after the store reports that installation is complete.

Play Store settings can prevent automatic updates. A manual check is therefore useful when Chrome has been closed for a long time, the device has been offline, or an update notification is pending. The store’s completed installation status, rather than the appearance of a notification alone, is the useful confirmation.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the Apple App Store.
  2. Tap your account picture.
  3. Review the available updates list.
  4. Tap Update beside Chrome and wait for the progress indicator to finish.
  5. Launch Chrome again.

App-store update behavior depends on the device’s automatic-download settings, network access, available storage, and the iOS or iPadOS version that the app supports. If Chrome does not appear in the available-updates list, check that the store is signed in and connected, then review the device’s system-update status rather than downloading a browser installer from a web page.

Update Microsoft Edge

Check and install on a computer

  1. Open Edge.
  2. Choose Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
  3. Select Help and feedback, then About Microsoft Edge. You can also type edge://settings/help in the address bar and press Enter.
  4. Allow Edge to check for and download an offered update.
  5. Click Restart when Edge displays it. The update may already be downloaded and simply waiting for this restart.

On Windows, a second route is Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. If neither Edge’s About page nor Windows Update succeeds, Microsoft also provides an official Edge installer that can be downloaded and run again. Use the installer only from Microsoft’s own distribution channel. The installer is an alternative for a failed normal update, not a reason to accept a download advertised by an unrelated website.

Edge normally completes an update when it is restarted. If the About page says an update is ready but the browser remains open, finish the restart before testing the new version or assuming the update failed.

Why Edge may wait or hide controls

  • Metered connection: Edge can defer downloads when Windows marks the network as metered. Connect through an unrestricted network or follow your organization’s approved policy before trying again.
  • Managed browser: A company, school, or other administrator can disable update settings or remove controls. A banner indicating that the browser is managed means the IT administrator controls the policy; contact that administrator rather than attempting to bypass it.
  • Device or regional conditions: Microsoft identifies certain devices purchased in China as cases in which manual action may be required.

If an administrator manages the device, Microsoft’s update troubleshooting may require checking connectivity to the update and download endpoints. That is an administrator task. Do not turn off security software or bypass policy simply to force an Edge download.

Update Mozilla Firefox

Windows, Mac, and Linux

Firefox’s menu labels and update process vary by operating system. Start from Mozilla’s official Installation and updates support hub, select your operating system, and follow the current instructions for that platform. The hub separates latest-release guidance for Windows, Mac, and Linux, so use the section that matches the computer rather than applying another platform’s steps.

When Firefox offers an update, let the download finish and accept the requested restart. If the browser cannot update in place, Mozilla’s platform instructions explain whether to use the built-in updater, download a current installer, or correct a permissions problem. A current installer should come from Mozilla or an organization’s approved software portal, not from a pop-up claiming that Firefox is damaged.

Android and iPhone or iPad

Use the device’s app store to find Firefox and install any listed update. Mozilla’s support hub includes separate mobile instructions and release information. After installation, open Firefox once so the updated app initializes; the store’s completed status is the confirmation that the package was installed.

Older macOS versions

Operating-system age can determine which Firefox branch remains available. Mozilla identifies Firefox 115 as the last supported version for macOS 10.12 Sierra, 10.13 High Sierra, and 10.14 Mojave. Mozilla says Firefox 115 Extended Support Release (ESR) security updates are planned through March 2027, with that date subject to reevaluation. This is a support horizon, not a promise that every later Firefox feature will run on those systems. If the Mac cannot receive newer macOS releases, keep the supported ESR build updated and plan an operating-system or hardware change before that support window ends.

Update Apple Safari

Mac

  1. Open macOS System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS releases).
  2. Open General > Software Update and let the Mac check for updates.
  3. Install the offered macOS or Safari-related update.
  4. Restart the Mac when Apple requests it, then open Safari again.

Safari is not updated through a separate browser download on supported Apple systems. Its available releases follow the macOS version, which is why two Macs can show different Safari versions even when both check on the same day. If Software Update offers only a macOS update, that update can be the channel carrying the Safari security changes.

iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose General > Software Update.
  3. Install the available iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS update.
  4. Complete any requested passcode, power, or restart steps.
  5. Open Safari after the operating-system update finishes.

Apple’s security-release records list Safari releases alongside the macOS versions they support. Use that record when you need to understand why a device cannot install a newer Safari build; the limiting factor may be the operating system rather than a Safari setting. Do not try to replace Safari with a downloaded installer on an iPhone, iPad, or Vision Pro.

How to confirm that a security update is active

Desktop browsers

  • Chrome: return to Help > About Google Chrome. The page should report that Chrome is up to date, or it should no longer show a pending Relaunch button.
  • Edge: open About Microsoft Edge or edge://settings/help again. A completed update should no longer offer Restart for the same package.
  • Firefox: use the About or update status shown by the operating-system-specific Mozilla instructions you followed.
  • Safari: verify the installed operating-system version in Apple’s system settings and compare it with the Safari release information supported for that system.

Mobile browsers

Return to the app store’s account or app-management page. The browser should appear under recently updated apps or show an Open button instead of Update. If the store still shows Update, the installation did not finish, even if a notification appeared earlier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use one universal version number

Release numbers differ between Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS. A version seen in a desktop article may not exist for a phone, and Safari’s number is constrained by Apple’s operating-system support. Confirm the browser and platform together.

When an update will not install

Finish a downloaded update

The most common incomplete state is a package that has already downloaded but is waiting for the browser to close. Save open work, select Relaunch or Restart, and wait for the browser to reopen before checking again. Reboot the computer only if the browser’s own completion control does not work.

Check connectivity without weakening protection

Temporarily unavailable update servers, captive portals, DNS failures, firewalls, or proxy rules can interrupt a check. First open a normal web page, sign in to any required network portal, and retry the browser’s About page. On managed networks, an administrator may need to allow the vendor’s update and download endpoints. Do not disable antivirus, firewall, or other security protection as a routine update step; ask the network administrator to correct the allow-list or proxy configuration.

Review metered-network and power conditions

Windows can mark a connection as metered, and Edge may defer downloads in that state. Connect to a permitted non-metered network or follow the organization’s policy. Phones can also postpone large app updates when battery, storage, or mobile-data limits are reached. Plug in the device, free storage, and retry from the store’s update page.

Check operating-system support

An old operating system can stop receiving current browser builds. Chrome may report that system requirements are not met; Firefox has the documented 115 ESR path for macOS 10.12 through 10.14; Safari availability follows Apple’s supported operating systems. Install all available system updates, then retry the browser update. If no compatible system update exists, use the vendor’s supported long-term branch where one is offered and schedule a platform upgrade.

Look for organization policy

On a work or school device, update controls may be hidden, disabled, or replaced by a company software-management tool. A managed-browser notice is an instruction to contact IT, not an error to work around. Administrators may control update timing to test compatibility, but they remain responsible for deploying security fixes within their policy window.

Repair a damaged installation

If the updater repeatedly fails after connectivity, storage, and support checks, follow the browser vendor’s official repair or reinstall procedure for the operating system. Export or synchronize bookmarks and confirm that you know your passwords before removing an installation. Download a replacement installer only from the browser maker’s official site or your organization’s software portal.

A maintenance routine that prevents missed fixes

  1. Leave automatic browser and operating-system updates enabled unless an administrator has a documented reason to manage them centrally.
  2. Restart browsers when they show Relaunch or Restart instead of postponing indefinitely.
  3. Open each browser’s About or update page after a long period offline, travel, or a major operating-system update.
  4. Keep enough free storage for an app-store or operating-system package and install phone updates while connected to power when practical.
  5. Use the vendor’s support instructions when a device reaches an older operating-system boundary; do not install an incompatible build from an unofficial download.
  6. On managed equipment, report a pending or failed update to IT with the browser name, operating-system version, displayed error, and time of the failed check.

What an up-to-date browser does—and does not—guarantee

Installing the current supported browser build applies fixes included in that release, but it does not make every website safe or remove risks from malicious extensions, stolen passwords, phishing, or an unpatched operating system. Keep the operating system and extensions maintained, remove extensions you no longer need, and treat unexpected update pop-ups as suspicious. A genuine browser update is initiated from the browser’s own About page, the device’s app store, or the operating-system settings—not from a random web page demanding a download.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know Chrome finished installing a security update?

Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and choose Help > About Google Chrome. If Chrome reports that it is up to date and no Relaunch button remains, the pending update has been applied.

Why does Edge say an update is ready but not install?

Edge may have downloaded the package and be waiting for a restart. Select Restart on the About Microsoft Edge page. A metered connection, organization policy, or a device-specific condition can also defer the download.

Can I update Safari without updating macOS or iOS?

Safari updates through Apple’s software-update system. Install the offered macOS, iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS update; Safari’s available release is tied to the operating system and its support status.

What should I do if Firefox will not update on an older Mac?

Check Mozilla’s platform instructions. Firefox 115 is the last supported version for macOS 10.12, 10.13, and 10.14, with Firefox 115 ESR security updates planned through March 2027, subject to reevaluation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is closing the browser enough to apply an update?

Often, but not always. Chrome and Edge may show Relaunch or Restart, which is the clearest completion action. Mobile browsers require the app store to finish installing the package, and Safari requires the operating-system update to complete.

Should I disable antivirus or my firewall when an update fails?

No. Check the network connection, captive-portal sign-in, proxy, and administrator allow-list instead. Disabling security protection should not be a routine browser-update step.

Why is the update control missing on my work computer?

An organization may manage the browser and hide or disable update settings. Contact the company or school IT administrator rather than attempting to bypass the policy.

Can I use a random website’s browser-update pop-up?

No. Start the update from the browser’s About page, the official app store, Apple Software Update, Windows Update, or the browser maker’s official installer.

The Bottom Line

Use the browser’s official About page, app store, or operating-system updater; complete every Relaunch, Restart, or installation prompt; then verify the status on the same device and operating system. If the update is blocked by a metered connection, an old system, or organization policy, fix that underlying condition or contact the responsible administrator instead of weakening security or downloading from an unofficial site.
