To refresh Brave’s built-in ad-blocking rules, update the filter lists—not the browser application. On desktop, open Settings → Shields → Content filtering → Update lists (or enter brave://settings/shields/filters). On iPhone or iPad, use Settings → Shields & Privacy → Content Filtering → Update Lists. On Android, use Settings → Brave Shields & privacy → Content filtering, then tap UPDATE in the top-right.
After updating, test the site that prompted you. If it no longer works, change Shields only for that site instead of weakening protection everywhere. This guide explains each platform’s path, how to recover from a broken page, and what the update control does—and does not—change.
What a Brave Shields filter-list update actually does
Brave Shields uses locally applied filter lists to block advertising, trackers and other unwanted page resources. The Update lists command refreshes those lists from Brave’s supported sources. It is separate from updating the Brave browser application itself: the setting described here changes filtering data, not the installed browser version.

That is why a safe update includes a quick check of your important sites and a targeted adjustment if one page misbehaves.

Brave’s Help Center describes its filter-rule support as “broadly compatible with uBlock Origin’s filter rule syntax.” “Broadly compatible” is not a promise that every third-party rule behaves identically in Brave. Compatibility differences are treated as bugs and recorded in Brave’s adblock-rust project, so a rule that works in another blocker should not be assumed to work perfectly here.
Before updating: identify the change you intend to make
Filter lists and browser updates are different
Use Update lists when your goal is to refresh ad-blocking and tracking rules. It does not install a new Brave release, repair an outdated browser binary, or provide a browser-version update workflow. If you also need a browser update, handle that as a separate task through Brave’s normal application-update mechanism for your operating system.
Record any custom rules you rely on
If you have entered rules yourself, note what you changed before troubleshooting. This is especially useful when a page element disappears after a refresh. Brave exposes custom entries under the Custom Filters section of Content Filtering, where an individual rule can be removed and the page refreshed.

Start with the site that led you to update. Then check a few sites you use regularly, such as a mail service, a shopping or payment page, and a site where you sign in. This is a practical verification routine, not a test protocol prescribed by Brave. It helps you notice a compatibility problem while the cause is still clear.

Labels can vary slightly with the current app version and capitalization. The paths below reflect Brave’s official instructions, including the article updated April 29, 2025.
Desktop: use Settings or the direct settings page
- Open Brave’s main menu and choose Settings.
- Select Shields in the settings navigation.
- Open Content filtering.
- Choose Update lists.
You can go directly to the same settings area by entering brave://settings/shields/filters in the address bar. Check that the address begins with brave://; it is an internal Brave settings page, not a web search.
iPhone and iPad: update from Shields & Privacy
- Open Brave’s Settings.
- Tap Shields & Privacy.
- Open Content Filtering.
- Tap Update Lists.
Stay in the Content Filtering screen long enough to confirm that you selected the list-update control rather than a general privacy setting. The iOS instructions concern filter data only.
Android: use the UPDATE button
- Open Brave and enter Settings.
- Choose Brave Shields & privacy.
- Tap Content filtering.
- Tap UPDATE in the top-right corner.
Android’s button is displayed in uppercase in Brave’s instructions. If the menu wording differs, look for the Content filtering screen under Brave Shields & privacy rather than changing global Shields settings.

How to check that the refresh helped
- Return to the page that prompted the update and reload it.
- Check the page’s main functions: navigation, sign-in, search, media playback, forms and downloads as applicable.
- Open several routinely used sites and look for the same functions, not just whether the home page renders.
- If everything works, leave your global Shields settings unchanged. The lists have been refreshed without requiring a broader protection change.
Brave’s cited filter-list instructions do not say that every update requires restarting the browser. Do not treat a restart as a mandatory step. A normal page reload is the relevant first check; restart only if another, platform-specific problem gives you a reason.
If one website breaks after the update
Brave acknowledges that Shields can sometimes cause sites to break. Its recommended model is to provide controls for individual sites, so begin with the page that fails rather than lowering protection globally.
Open the site’s Shields panel
- Stay on the affected website.
- Click or tap the Shields lion icon in the address bar.
- Review the controls shown for that site.
- Make the smallest change that addresses the symptom, then reload the page.
Brave allows a site’s settings to differ from global defaults. A per-site change therefore lets one necessary exception coexist with stronger protection on other sites.

Match the change to the symptom
- A page layout is incomplete: inspect the site’s Shields options and test a less restrictive setting for that site only.
- A sign-in or form fails: check whether the page depends on a blocked script, cookie or embedded resource, and adjust only the affected site.
- Video, audio or another embedded feature will not load: test the site-specific Shields setting, reload, and restore the stricter setting if it was not the cause.
- Several unrelated sites fail: do not create separate exceptions immediately. Recheck the global settings and any custom filters, because a shared rule is more likely than independent site problems.
These are diagnostic branches, not a claim that a particular switch always fixes a particular feature. Change one relevant setting at a time so you can tell which adjustment affected the result.

Check Custom Filters when a rule hides page content
Custom CSS content filters can hide or disrupt a page element. Brave documents a basic removal process in its CSS content-filter guidance, which is marked as a work in progress and was last updated July 18, 2023.
- Open the relevant Content filtering settings screen.
- Find the Custom Filters section.
- Identify the custom entry associated with the missing or broken element.
- Remove that entry.
- Save the change when Brave presents a save control.
- Return to the affected page and refresh it.
Remove only the entry you can associate with the problem. Deleting all custom rules at once makes it harder to identify the cause and may restore unwanted page elements elsewhere.

Global settings apply as the default across browsing. A site-specific setting overrides that default for the named site. The distinction matters because a global change can alter every page, while a per-site adjustment limits the compatibility trade-off to the service that needs it.

Why broad restrictions can break pages
Brave’s general Shields explanation says the default protections are designed to protect privacy without making browsing harder. It also warns that more restrictive choices—such as blocking JavaScript and all cookies—can break sites. Those options affect fundamental page behavior, so they are poor first responses to a problem limited to one domain.

A safer decision sequence
- Keep the global protection level at its current setting.
- Use the site’s Shields panel to test one narrower adjustment.
- Reload and verify the specific feature that failed.
- Keep the exception only if the site needs it.
- If the exception does not help, undo it and inspect Custom Filters or another site-specific control instead.
This sequence preserves stronger defaults for the rest of your browsing session and leaves a clear path to reverse each experiment.
Using third-party filter syntax responsibly
Brave’s broad compatibility with uBlock Origin’s filter rule syntax can make familiar rules useful, but “broadly compatible” does not mean universal support. A rule may use syntax that Brave interprets differently, depend on a feature not implemented in the same way, or conflict with another rule.
- Prefer Brave’s built-in lists and the official Update lists control for routine maintenance.
- Add a custom rule only when you understand which page resource or element it targets.
- Apply one change at a time and test the page that motivated it.
- Keep a human-readable note of custom entries so you can remove a problematic rule later.
- Do not assume that a rule copied from another blocker has been independently validated in Brave.
Brave’s compatibility statement is a vendor description, not an independent performance or coverage test. It supports trying compatible syntax cautiously, not promising that every list or rule will work.
What the official workflow does not promise
No documented backup or rollback procedure
The Brave sources used for this workflow do not document a filter-list backup or rollback feature. Do not expect the Update lists control to create a restore point, and do not describe it as a way to return automatically to an earlier list version.
No published update interval or protection statistic
The official settings guidance does not establish a list size, refresh interval, protection percentage, speed improvement or performance cost. Avoid judging an update by an invented number. The meaningful observable result is whether the current pages and features you need continue to work.
No guarantee for every external list
Compatibility with a syntax family is not an endorsement of every third-party list. Treat external rules as unverified until you have checked the sites and features that matter to you.
Troubleshooting checklist
- The Update lists control is missing: verify that you are in Content filtering, not a different Shields screen, and check the platform-specific path above.
- You changed the wrong setting: return to Content filtering and use the list control; do not substitute a browser application update for a filter refresh.
- One site fails: open that site’s Shields lion panel and make a per-site adjustment.
- A custom-styled element disappeared: inspect Custom Filters, remove the suspect entry, save, and refresh.
- Many sites fail after a custom change: undo the latest custom rule first, then reload a representative page.
- A restrictive global option caused failures: restore the previous global setting and test a site-specific exception instead.
- A copied rule behaves unexpectedly: remove it, confirm the page works, and treat the rule as incompatible until proven otherwise.
A repeatable safe-maintenance routine
- Decide whether you need refreshed filter lists or a browser application update.
- Open the platform-specific Content filtering screen.
- Use the built-in Update lists control.
- Reload the page that prompted the maintenance.
- Check the important functions on that page and a small set of regularly used sites.
- If a single site fails, adjust its Shields panel rather than changing the global default.
- If a custom rule is implicated, remove that entry from Custom Filters, save, and refresh.
- Document any exception you keep so you know what to revisit if the site or filter behavior changes.
This routine keeps the scope of each change visible: list data is refreshed centrally, while compatibility fixes remain limited to the site or rule that needs them.
