There are several ways to update the BIOS on an ASUS ROG Ally: MyASUS, Armoury Crate SE, an ASUS Windows installer, or the BIOS’s built-in ASUS Firmware Update/EZ Flash utility. The safest choice is the first method that is available on your device.

Before downloading anything, identify whether you have the 2023 ROG Ally or the 2024 ROG Ally X. Their BIOS files are not interchangeable.

Latest BIOS versions listed by ASUS

On the ASUS support pages checked on August 8, 2026, these were the latest listed versions:

Model Latest listed BIOS Release date
ROG Ally (2023), RC71L 342 March 7, 2025
ROG Ally X (2024), RC72LA 312 June 11, 2025

ASUS can add or replace packages on these pages, so treat the support page for your model as the authoritative list rather than relying on a version number in an older guide.

Prepare before updating

  • Connect the original AC adapter and leave it connected throughout the update.
  • Save open work and close applications.
  • Back up important files.
  • For the manual EZ Flash method, make sure the battery is at least 20% charged as well as connected to AC power.
  • Have your BitLocker or Device Encryption recovery key available.

A firmware change can cause Windows to request the recovery key after reboot. This does not mean that your files were erased. It is a security check triggered by the changed firmware. ASUS recommends disabling Device Encryption or BitLocker before updating and enabling it again afterward. If you leave encryption enabled, confirm that you can retrieve the recovery key before starting.

Method 1: Update with MyASUS

MyASUS is the simplest Windows method when it offers a BIOS package for the Ally.

  5. Click Update Selected Items.
  6. Review the update information and click Confirm to download it.
  7. When the download finishes, click Restart.
  8. The Ally restarts to the BIOS-update screen. On a standard UEFI screen, select Yes. On systems using MyASUS in UEFI, select Confirm.
  9. Wait for the process to finish. Do not press the Power button or disconnect the charger.
  10. When the completion message appears, select OK. The Ally should restart into Windows.

If MyASUS has no System Update tab, or it does not list a BIOS update, use the ASUS download method or EZ Flash instead.

Method 2: Update through Armoury Crate SE

Armoury Crate SE can deliver BIOS or other firmware updates through its Update Center. The exact labels can vary between Armoury Crate versions.

  1. Open Armoury Crate SE.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Update Center.
  4. Click Check for Updates.
  5. If a BIOS or firmware update is offered, select it and follow the installation prompts.

ASUS’s current documentation lists Armoury Crate SE version 2.1.10.0 or later for the supported ROG Ally-series update functionality. The BIOS update is found in Settings > Update Center, not in the normal Game Library screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Method 3: Download and run the BIOS installer from ASUS

Use this route if MyASUS does not show the update.

  1. Open the ASUS support page for your model: RC71L or RC72LA.
  2. Open the BIOS & FIRMWARE section.
  3. Download the package labeled BIOS Update for Windows.
  4. If the download is a ZIP file, right-click it and select Extract All.
  5. Open the extracted folder and double-click the BIOS Update application.
  6. In the setup wizard, click Next.
  7. Accept the license agreement and click Next.
  8. Allow the installer to complete its preparation.
  9. Select Yes, restart the computer now, then click Finish.
  10. When the Ally enters the firmware update screen, select Yes, or Confirm if it displays the MyASUS-in-UEFI interface.

Leave the Ally connected to power until the update finishes. ASUS does not provide a universal command-line command for this process; the supported Windows procedure uses the downloaded application and graphical setup wizard.

Method 4: Update through ASUS Firmware Update or EZ Flash

Use EZ Flash when a Windows BIOS installer is unavailable or Windows-based updating is not practical.

Prepare a FAT32 USB drive

  1. Open the support page for the exact Ally model.
  2. Download the package labeled BIOS for ASUS EZ Flash Utility.
  3. Extract the downloaded ZIP file.
  4. Format a USB flash drive as FAT32.
  5. Copy the extracted BIOS file to the USB drive’s root directory, not inside another folder.

Run the update in BIOS

  1. Shut down the Ally.
  2. Hold Volume Down (-) and press the Power button.
  3. Keep holding Volume Down until BIOS setup opens.
  4. If the simplified interface appears, press F7 or select Advanced Mode.
  5. Choose Advanced.
  6. Select ASUS Firmware Update. Some firmware versions call this ASUS EZ Flash 3 Utility.
  7. Select the USB storage device.
  8. Select the BIOS file.
  9. Choose Yes to begin.
  10. Check the displayed BIOS information and select Yes again.
  11. Wait for the Ally to finish and restart automatically.

Do not remove the USB drive during the update. ASUS’s EZ Flash guidance requires at least 20% battery and AC power. BIOS menu names and screen layouts may differ slightly by model and firmware version.

Windows Update may also deliver the BIOS

Some ASUS systems receive firmware through Windows Update. To check whether one is waiting:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Firmware.
  3. Open System Firmware and select Properties.

If Windows has downloaded a firmware update and is waiting for a restart, reboot the Ally while it is connected to power. Windows applies the update automatically; no command is required.

What to do if an update appears frozen

Do not force the Ally off just because the screen does not appear to change. Do not press the Power button, disconnect AC power, or remove the USB drive while firmware is being written. Interrupting the process can leave the device unable to start.

Recover from an interrupted BIOS update

If the Ally shows a BIOS recovery or resume-update screen:

  1. Connect the AC adapter.
  2. If the prompt offers to resume, wait 60 seconds or select Yes, depending on the message.
  3. Allow the recovery process to finish without interruption.

If the device shows a failed-update screen instead:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use another computer to download the BIOS file for the affected model.
  2. Format a USB flash drive as FAT32.
  3. Copy the BIOS file to the USB drive’s root directory.
  4. Turn off the Ally.
  5. Hold the Power button for 15 seconds, until the power LED turns off.
  6. Insert the USB drive and connect the AC adapter.
  7. Turn on the Ally.
  8. Allow the BIOS recovery update to start automatically.

If the recovery screen specifies a recommended BIOS version, use that version. If it does not, ASUS says to use the latest BIOS version for the affected model. BIOS downgrading is not treated as a normal supported rollback by ASUS’s current EZ Flash guidance.

FAQ

Do the ROG Ally and ROG Ally X use the same BIOS?

No. The 2023 ROG Ally is model RC71L and the 2024 ROG Ally X is model RC72LA. Download BIOS files only from the support page matching your model.

Is a USB drive required to update the ROG Ally BIOS?

No. MyASUS, Armoury Crate SE, an ASUS Windows installer, and Windows Update may update the BIOS without USB. A FAT32 USB drive is needed for the manual ASUS Firmware Update/EZ Flash method and some recovery procedures.

Can I use Armoury Crate to update the Ally BIOS?

Yes, when the update is offered. Open Armoury Crate SE and go to Settings > Update Center > Check for Updates. The normal Game Library screen is not the BIOS-update menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if BitLocker asks for a recovery key after the update?

Enter the BitLocker or Device Encryption recovery key. A BIOS update can trigger this security prompt because the firmware changed; it does not indicate that the drive was erased.

Can I turn off the Ally during a BIOS update?

No. Keep AC power connected and do not force a shutdown, disconnect the charger, or remove the USB drive. Interrupting firmware writing can prevent the Ally from starting.

Can I downgrade the Ally BIOS if a new version causes a problem?

ASUS’s current EZ Flash guidance states that BIOS downgrading is not allowed. Treat the BIOS version offered for your exact model as the supported update path.

The Bottom Line

For most users, start with MyASUS > System Update. If it is unavailable, use Armoury Crate SE > Settings > Update Center or download the correct Windows installer from ASUS. Use EZ Flash with a FAT32 USB drive only when the Windows methods are unavailable. Whichever method you choose, verify the model first, connect AC power, keep your recovery key available, and do not interrupt the update.
