Update a sideloaded Android app through the developer’s official download page or the same reputable alternative store that supplied it. Google Play may not update an app installed elsewhere, even when an equivalent listing exists, because the stores can use different signing keys, version codes, or distribution rules.
Before installing anything, confirm the app name, publisher, release, and download source. Android may request permission for the browser or file manager to install apps, and Play Protect may warn about an unknown app. Those prompts are security checks—not proof that a download is genuine—so stop when the source or app identity cannot be verified.
Why an app installed outside Google Play has a different update path
Android updates an installed package only when a compatible release comes from a channel that can replace it. A developer-hosted APK, an alternative store, and Google Play can each distribute the same product, but they may use different signing arrangements, version-code sequences, or release policies. As a result, having an app’s name appear in Google Play does not establish that Google Play can update the copy already on your phone.
Android Developers’ publishing guidance describes developers hosting release-ready APKs on their own websites and distributing through other stores. The practical rule is to return to the channel that installed the app, unless the publisher explicitly documents a migration path to another channel.

What determines whether an update can install over the existing app
- Publisher identity: The update must belong to the expected developer, not merely have a similar name or icon.
- Package and signature: Android checks that the replacement belongs to the same application and is signed in a compatible way. A release signed differently can require a documented migration or a fresh installation.
- Version code: The update normally needs a newer version code than the installed build. A file described as “latest” can still be older than your installed build if it came from a different release channel.
- Device compatibility: Android version, processor architecture, region, and app requirements can prevent an otherwise legitimate file from installing.
- Distribution policy: A store may offer a release that another store does not, or may delay or omit a particular build.
First identify the legitimate update source
Do not begin by searching for a random APK mirror. Start with the app and work outward to a verifiable publisher.
- Open the app’s About, Help, Settings, or Check for updates screen. Record the exact app name, current version, and developer or publisher name.
- Look for an update link inside the app. Treat it as trustworthy only when it leads to the publisher’s official website or to the recognized store that originally supplied the app.
- If the app does not provide a link, check your browser history, download history, or the alternative store’s library to identify where the original installation came from.
- Search that original source for the exact app and compare its publisher identity, icon, description, permissions, and release notes with the installed app.
An app that came from a developer website should normally be updated from that developer’s current download page. An app obtained from an alternative store should normally be updated from that store, provided the store still lists the same publisher and application.
Step-by-step: install an update safely
1. Check the installed version
Use the app’s About screen when available. Android’s system app-information page can also show the installed version, although labels differ by device manufacturer. Note the version before downloading so you can tell whether the proposed release is actually newer.

Use the developer’s own domain or the alternative store used for the original installation. Avoid links received in unsolicited messages, advertisements, comments, or file-sharing pages. A genuine-looking icon is not enough to establish provenance.
3. Compare the release details
Confirm the publisher name, package or application identity when the source displays it, supported Android versions, processor architecture when multiple APKs are offered, and release date or version code. Read the publisher’s update instructions instead of assuming that every APK is interchangeable.

4. Download only the intended release
Choose the file intended for your device and the app’s current channel. Do not install a “modded,” repacked, cracked, or unexplained variant as an update to a production app. Keep the existing installation and its data in place while you verify the download.
5. Grant source permission only when Android requests it
On Android 8.0 (API level 26) and later, permission to install an APK is granted to a particular source, such as the browser or file manager that opened it. Android documents this as the Install unknown apps setting. Open the prompt’s settings page, allow the source only if you intentionally obtained the file from a trusted channel, return to the installer, and review whether the permission should be turned off afterward.

Older Android releases use a different “unknown sources” control or may present a one-time approval. The labels and paths vary by manufacturer and Android release, so follow the prompt shown on your device rather than an old universal tap sequence.
6. Read every Android and Play Protect warning
Android or Google Play Protect can warn about an app installed from outside Google Play, unknown developers, or sensitive permissions. Read the app name and source in the warning. If they do not match what you intended to install, cancel the operation. Do not routinely disable Play Protect or other security controls to force an update.
7. Let Android complete the replacement
If the package, signature, version code, and device requirements are compatible, Android should offer an update that preserves the app’s installed data. Open the app afterward and check its version or About screen. If the installer reports a conflict, keep the working app installed and use the troubleshooting steps below instead of immediately uninstalling it.

Will Google Play update an app installed elsewhere?
There is no universal yes. Google Play can update an installation only when the package, signing, version information, and distribution arrangement allow that update. Android’s app-update guidance discusses multi-store distribution and version-code planning; it does not promise that an app installed from another source will be adopted by Google Play.

Even when two stores list what appears to be the same app, different signing keys or version-code arrangements can make one store’s package ineligible to replace the other. The publisher is the authority for whether a migration is supported.
Developer website versus alternative store

How Play Protect fits into the process
Google describes Play Protect as scanning Android apps, including apps installed from outside Google Play, and warning or blocking in some circumstances. Its guidance covers unknown apps and applications that request sensitive permissions. Google’s Play Protect page reports that it scans 200 billion Android apps daily; the surfaced page does not state a year, and the figure should not be read as 200 billion unique apps or users.
Play Protect is a valuable safety layer, but it is not the publisher’s update service and it is not a guarantee that an APK is trustworthy. A file can come from an unverified source without triggering a warning, and a legitimate publisher release can still require review of its identity and permissions.
Warnings that should stop the installation
- The warning names a different app, developer, or source than the one you selected.
- The download page redirects through an unexplained file host or asks you to install a second “updater.”
- The file requests sensitive permissions that do not fit the app’s purpose.
- The publisher cannot explain why the update requires uninstalling the existing app or losing its data.
- The source tells you to disable Play Protect as a routine step.
What Android’s newer verification flow changes
In a March 2026 Android Developers blog post, Google described an advanced flow for power users who install apps from unverified developers while retaining an on-screen warning. Google’s developer-verification FAQ also discusses whether sideloading from unverified developers remains possible. The exact screens depend on rollout, Android version, device, and account status.

Do not treat older instructions that say to enable one global “unknown sources” switch as current for every phone. Use the permission or verification prompt displayed by your device and consult current Android user documentation when the prompt differs from the instructions you are following. Verification changes do not make an unknown download safe; they change how Android lets a user acknowledge the risk.

“App not installed” or package conflict
Keep the existing app installed. A conflict can indicate a different signing key, package identity, or release channel. Check the publisher’s help page for a supported migration. Uninstalling first may remove local data and can leave you unable to restore it.
The file is older than the installed version
Compare the displayed version and, where available, version code. A store may publish a different sequence from the developer website. Return to the original channel and obtain a release intended to supersede your installed build.
Android says the app is incompatible
Check the required Android release, device architecture, screen or feature requirements, and whether you downloaded the correct split or universal package. The publisher’s release notes should identify supported devices. Do not substitute a random variant simply because its filename looks newer.
The installer cannot access the APK
Confirm that the download completed, that the file is stored locally, and that the app opening it—usually the browser or file manager—has the source-specific install permission. Re-download from the official channel if the file is incomplete. Avoid granting broad permissions to unrelated apps.

Play Protect blocks or warns about the file
Read the warning and verify the source, publisher, and requested permissions. If the identity is unclear, cancel and contact the publisher. Only the publisher can explain a false positive or provide a properly signed release; disabling protection should not be the default fix.
The update asks for an uninstall
Pause before accepting. An uninstall can erase app data, remove account tokens, or break an unsupported migration. Check whether the publisher provides a backup method and a documented transition between signing keys or distribution channels.
Security checklist for every sideloaded update
- Use the publisher’s official domain or the same recognized store that supplied the original app.
- Match the exact app name, publisher, package identity, and release details.
- Prefer a signed update that Android recognizes as a replacement for the installed package.
- Grant installation permission only to the source you deliberately used, and review it afterward.
- Read Play Protect and Android warnings; never dismiss them automatically.
- Keep the working installation and its data until the new release has installed successfully.
- Ask the publisher for help when compatibility, signature, or migration issues appear.
When to contact the developer
Contact the publisher when the official page does not identify the correct APK, the store listing and installed app disagree, an update requires data-destructive steps, or every official release produces a signature or compatibility error. Include the Android version, device model, installed app version, attempted update version, installation source, and the exact error text. Do not send passwords, authentication codes, or private app data.

Can I install the Google Play version over a sideloaded version?
Only if the publisher’s signing and package arrangement makes that migration compatible. An identical app name does not prove that the Play package can replace your existing installation.
Should I uninstall the old app before updating?
No. Keep it installed unless the publisher provides a documented migration that requires removal and explains how to preserve or restore your data.
Does allowing “Install unknown apps” make future downloads safe?
No. The permission authorizes a particular installer source; it does not validate the file, publisher, or permissions. Revoke it when you no longer need that source.
Is a Play Protect scan an approval of the developer?
No. Scanning can detect or warn about some threats, but it does not establish that an unofficial download is authentic or guarantee future updates.
