To update AnyDesk on Linux, first identify how it was installed. A client installed from AnyDesk’s DEB or RPM repository is updated with the package manager command for your distribution; a client installed from a downloaded installer is updated by running the newer installer and following its removal-and-reinstall prompts. A portable .tar.gz copy is handled separately and should not be updated with repository commands.
After any update, run anydesk --version. AnyDesk documents this Linux command as the direct way to display the installed client version.
Choose the update path that matches your installation
Linux AnyDesk installations generally fall into three categories: a package installed from an AnyDesk DEB or RPM repository, a downloaded installer package, or a portable .tar.gz archive. The update procedure depends on that original installation method, not merely on the Linux distribution you are currently using.

If you are unsure which method was used, do not begin by running a package command at random. Check whether AnyDesk appears as a package managed by your distribution, whether you normally launch an extracted folder, and whether the original download came from an installer or the AnyDesk repository. The distinction prevents a successful-looking command from updating a different installation—or from updating nothing at all.

How to update AnyDesk on Linux from a repository
AnyDesk’s Linux update instructions list one command for each supported package-manager family in the documentation. The commands are intended for installations made after adding the AnyDesk DEB or RPM repository. Run them with root privileges. You can open a root shell first with your system’s normal administrative method, or prefix the command through your approved privilege workflow; the command itself remains the one shown by AnyDesk.
Debian or Ubuntu
For a DEB-based installation on Debian or Ubuntu, run:
apt upgrade anydeskThe command asks the APT package manager to upgrade the package named anydesk. If the shell reports that the package cannot be found, stop and confirm that this machine actually uses the AnyDesk DEB repository and that the repository configuration is still present. A downloaded installer or portable archive will not be repaired by this command.
RHEL or CentOS
For a repository installation on RHEL or CentOS, run:
yum upgrade anydeskAllow the package manager to show the proposed transaction and complete it only after confirming that the package is the expected AnyDesk package. A yum command is relevant to a repository-managed installation; it does not replace a portable archive.

Fedora
On Fedora, use:
dnf upgrade anydeskAs with the other commands, execute it as root and ensure that the AnyDesk repository is the source of the installed package. If no update is offered, the repository may already provide the same version, or the installation may have come from another route. Verify the result with the version command rather than assuming that the command changed the running client.
SUSE
On SUSE, run:
zypper upgrade anydeskReview the package-manager transaction before accepting it. If zypper cannot identify anydesk, treat that as a sign to recheck the installation method and repository configuration, not as a reason to install a second copy from an unrelated source.

What to do while the package manager is running
- Use the command for the distribution that owns the installation; do not substitute one package manager for another.
- Keep the terminal open until the transaction finishes or reports a clear error.
- Read dependency, replacement, or removal prompts before confirming them.
- After completion, close and relaunch AnyDesk if it was open, then check the version.
The official AnyDesk update guide is the authoritative reference for these Linux repository commands and states that the update process preserves the previous version’s AnyDesk ID and settings.
How to update AnyDesk installed with a downloaded installer
If you installed AnyDesk by downloading an installer rather than adding the repository, use the installer route. AnyDesk describes this flow for standard clients:
- Download the latest AnyDesk Linux installer from the AnyDesk website. If your organization uses a custom client, obtain that client from the my.anydesk portal instead.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- When the installer offers to uninstall the current version, accept that removal as part of the update flow.
- After the current version is removed, run the installer again to install the downloaded version.
- Launch AnyDesk and verify the installed version with
anydesk --version.
This is a reinstall-style update, not an APT, YUM, DNF, or Zypper transaction. Do not use one of the repository commands merely because the host happens to run Debian, Ubuntu, RHEL, CentOS, Fedora, or SUSE. The original installation method determines the correct path.

Standard versus custom clients
The installer procedure documented for standard clients does not automatically describe the update process for a custom client. Custom clients have separate guidance. Use the custom package supplied through your organization’s my.anydesk portal and follow the instructions associated with that client rather than replacing it with a standard download.
What the reinstall flow preserves
AnyDesk says its update process preserves the previous version’s AnyDesk ID and settings. Nevertheless, record any organization-specific deployment details before maintenance, especially when the computer is managed remotely. Keep the installer until you have confirmed that the new client starts and that the expected configuration remains available.
Updating a portable AnyDesk .tar.gz archive
AnyDesk also supplies a portable Linux archive. You can extract the .tar.gz file and run the client from that folder without installing it or using administrative privileges. Because it is not a repository package, commands such as apt upgrade anydesk and dnf upgrade anydesk do not update it.
For a portable copy, download a newer archive from the source where you obtained the original, extract it to a new folder, and launch the executable from that new extraction. Keep the old folder until you have checked the new one; this gives you a straightforward way to return to the previous copy if the new archive does not start in your environment. Do not claim that a portable archive has been upgraded merely because a system package manager reports that another AnyDesk package is current.
Capabilities that the portable archive does not provide
According to AnyDesk’s installation documentation, the portable archive does not install the AnyDesk service. It therefore does not provide Unattended Access, reconnect after reboot, or login-screen access through an installed service. Those are limitations of the portable format, not symptoms that can be fixed by running a repository upgrade command.

If you require service-based operation, install AnyDesk using one of the documented package or installer methods instead of continuing to treat the archive as a full installed client. The AnyDesk installation guide explains the Linux package formats and the portable archive’s limitations.
How to check your AnyDesk version in Linux
The direct version check is a terminal command:
anydesk --versionAnyDesk’s Linux command-line reference defines the --version parameter as displaying the installed AnyDesk version. Run it after a repository upgrade, after the installer flow, and after replacing a portable archive.
Interpreting the result
- A version string confirms which AnyDesk executable the shell found and ran.
- Compare that value with the version you intended to install, not just with the date on the downloaded file.
- If you maintain more than one copy—for example, a package installation and an extracted archive—make sure the command you run refers to the copy you actually updated.
The command reports the version; it does not identify how AnyDesk was installed or whether a repository is configured. Use the installation-method checks first when deciding how to update. The syntax and parameter definition are documented in AnyDesk’s Linux command-line interface reference, which was updated on November 4, 2025.
A complete update-and-verify procedure
Use this sequence when you need a repeatable maintenance record.
- Identify the source. Decide whether the running copy came from an AnyDesk DEB/RPM repository, a downloaded installer, or a portable
.tar.gzarchive. - Close active sessions. End or hand off remote sessions before replacing the client so that a restart does not interrupt work unexpectedly.
- Apply the matching update. Run the Debian/Ubuntu, RHEL/CentOS, Fedora, or SUSE command as root for a repository package; follow the uninstall-and-rerun installer flow for a downloaded installer; or replace the extracted portable folder with a newer archive.
- Start the intended copy. If multiple copies exist, launch the one you just updated rather than relying on an old desktop shortcut or shell path.
- Verify the version. Run
anydesk --versionin a terminal. - Check operational access. Confirm that the application opens and that the features you rely on are available. In particular, remember that the portable format does not install the service or provide Unattended Access, reconnect after reboot, or login-screen access.
- Record the result. For managed systems, note the version output, installation method, date, and any custom-client source so the next maintenance cycle follows the same path.
Troubleshooting common update problems
The command says that anydesk cannot be found
First check whether AnyDesk was installed as a portable archive or launched from a folder. A portable executable may not be available as the system command anydesk. If the client was installed from a package or installer, confirm that you are using the intended system account and that the installation completed. Do not add a repository solely to make the command succeed; establish the original installation method first.

The package manager finds no upgrade
A no-change result can mean the repository already offers the installed version, the repository package is not the copy you use, or the installation came from an installer or archive. Run anydesk --version, identify the executable you launch, and then return to the matching update route. A package manager cannot upgrade a binary that lives only in an extracted archive.
The package command fails with a permissions error
AnyDesk’s repository instructions specify root privileges. Re-run the distribution command through your normal administrative procedure, such as entering a root shell or using the system’s approved privilege wrapper. If you do not have administrative access, the repository route cannot complete; use an administrator-managed update rather than attempting to modify protected files manually.
The installer asks to remove the current version
That prompt is part of the documented installer update flow. Accept the removal, let that step finish, and run the downloaded installer again to install the new version. Do not stop after the uninstall stage and assume the update is complete; verify with anydesk --version once the installation has been rerun.

Check that you launched the newly updated copy and that an older package or extracted folder is not being selected first. Close AnyDesk, start the intended installation, and run the command again. If you deliberately keep multiple installations, document which one is used for daily work and update that copy consistently.
Remote access features are missing after switching formats
Review whether you changed from an installed package or installer to a portable archive. The portable archive does not install the AnyDesk service and does not support Unattended Access, reconnect after reboot, or login-screen access. Installing the appropriate full client format is required when those service-dependent capabilities are necessary.
Keeping updates safe on managed Linux systems
AnyDesk’s update page says the update preserves the existing AnyDesk ID and settings, which is important for systems identified in remote-management records. Even so, maintenance should be planned around access continuity.
- Schedule the update when no critical remote session is in progress.
- Keep an alternate administrative path available before restarting or replacing a client.
- For a custom client, use the organization’s supplied package and instructions rather than a standard client download.
- After the update, verify both the version string and the features required by the deployment.
- Do not infer service support from a successful launch: a portable archive can run without installation but lacks the installed service capabilities listed in AnyDesk’s documentation.
