For most LG smart TVs, connect the TV to the internet and open Settings > All Settings > Support > Software Update > Check for Updates. If the TV offers a package, choose the install option and follow the on-screen instructions. TVs running webOS 4.5 or earlier generally use Settings > All Settings > General > About This TV > Check for Updates. The check looks for software released for that exact model; it is not a separate security-patch inventory. To determine whether a particular security fix or firmware release exists, search LG’s support site with the complete model number and read the model-specific release information.
What an LG TV software check actually does
An LG TV update check contacts LG (when the television is online) and looks for software offered to that model and region. A package may contain webOS changes, app compatibility updates, bug fixes, feature changes, and security fixes. LG Kenya describes the general purpose this way: “Software updates provide essential security patches and support for new smart features and the latest streaming apps.” This is a statement from LG Electronics / LG Kenya support, not a guarantee that every release for every model contains a security fix.
The TV menu does not document a separate security-status dashboard, a complete list of installed patches, or a universal end-of-support date. Therefore:

- “Your TV is up to date” means no newer package is currently being offered through that check. It does not prove that the model has received every security correction or that LG will continue supporting it.
- A model-specific support page is the place to confirm the downloadable version, applicable model numbers, regional availability, and any release notes LG publishes.
Model and regional differences matter. LG warns that menu names, screenshots, and update availability can vary by television. Use the support site for the country where the TV is being used whenever possible.

Prepare the TV before checking for an update
Find the exact model number
Write down the complete model identifier from the TV label, purchase documentation, or the TV’s information screen. Similar-looking models can receive different files, so do not use a package found for a neighboring model or a different screen size unless LG’s download page explicitly lists it as compatible.
Make the connection reliable
- For an internet update, connect the TV to a wired or wireless network before opening the update menu.
- Keep the TV connected to power while it downloads and installs. Do not switch it off during the installation prompt or progress sequence.
- If the network is unreliable, use a stable connection or consider the model-matched USB method described below rather than repeatedly interrupting a download.
Know which webOS generation you have
LG’s US instructions group the menu paths by webOS generation. The paths below are the practical starting points; your model may display slightly different wording.
Update over the internet
| webOS generation | Menu path to the update check | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| webOS 6.0 and later | Settings > All Settings > Support > Software Update > Check for Updates | LG USA Support’s 2025 guide; labels and images can differ by model. |
| webOS 5.0 | Settings > All Settings > Support > Software Update > Check for Updates | |
| webOS 4.5 and earlier | Settings > All Settings > General > About This TV > Check for Updates | The same LG USA guide; older interfaces place the check under About This TV. |
Step-by-step procedure
- Press the Settings button on the remote and open All Settings.
- For webOS 5.0 or newer, choose Support, then Software Update. For webOS 4.5 or earlier, choose General, About This TV, and then Check for Updates.
- Select Check for Updates. Wait while the TV contacts LG and checks software assigned to that model.
- If no package is offered, note the result and use LG’s model-specific support page if you need to investigate a particular release or security correction.
- If an update is offered, select the download/install command shown on screen, such as Download and Install, and accept the prompts.
- Leave the TV powered and connected until it finishes. It may restart as part of the installation; that restart is expected.
LG’s general procedure is documented in this June 12, 2026 LG USA support guide. The exact button labels can vary, so follow the wording displayed by your model rather than forcing a different menu sequence.

Turn automatic updates on or off
The software-update screen includes an Allow Auto Update or Auto Update setting on supported models. Turn it on if you want the TV to apply supported updates without waiting for you to approve each installation. Leave it off if you prefer to review an update first; you can still run Check for Updates manually.
LG’s notification guidance says that when automatic updating is off, an online TV can display an update notification when a new package is available. With automatic updating enabled, the software updates without requiring the viewer to select whether to proceed. This describes LG’s documented behavior, not a promise that every model receives every release simultaneously. See LG’s software-update notification article for that behavior.
How to check whether a security update is available
Use the TV check first
Run Check for Updates using the path for your webOS generation. A security fix may be bundled inside a normal firmware package rather than presented as a separately named “security update.” Record the date and software version shown by the TV if it reports one.
Verify the exact model on LG Support
- Open LG’s support website for your region.
- Enter the full model number, including suffixes that identify the market or tuner configuration.
- Open the model’s Software & Drivers or software-download area.
- Compare the available version and publication information with the version shown on the TV.
- Read any release notes or compatibility notes before deciding to install manually.
LG’s support material directs users to select their model to obtain the relevant software. The model page is more useful than a generic webOS number because LG does not release one universal package to every television. Regional sites can list different files or dates, so use the local LG page for the TV’s market.

Interpret “no update available” correctly
If the television reports that no update is available, it means no newer package is currently offered through that network check. It does not establish that the model has received every security patch, that a fix exists in another region, or that the TV remains in active security support. If you are checking because of a specific vulnerability or compliance requirement, compare the model’s support-page version and release notes and contact LG support for a definitive model-specific answer.
Update with a USB flash drive
USB installation is an alternative when the TV cannot update over the network or when LG provides a model-specific package that you need to install manually. It is not required for a normal internet update and is not inherently safer or newer.

What you need
- A computer with internet access to download the file.
- An empty USB flash drive with at least 1 GB of storage. LG USA specifies this minimum in its June 12, 2026 instructions.
- The exact TV model number and the matching LG software archive.
- Enough uninterrupted time to complete the installation; do not remove power or the USB drive while the TV is installing.
Prepare the drive
- Open LG’s regional Software & Drivers support page and select the exact TV model. Start from LG USA’s USB-capable update instructions if you are using the US site.
- Download the software archive listed for that model. Do not rename it to make it fit another model.
- Extract the archive on the computer.
- On the USB drive’s top level, create a folder named exactly
LG_DTV. The capitalization and underscore matter according to LG’s instructions. - Place the extracted update files inside that
LG_DTVfolder. Do not bury the folder inside another folder. - Eject the USB drive safely from the computer.
Install it on the TV
- Turn on the TV and connect the prepared USB drive.
- Wait for the TV to detect the package. If it recognizes a valid file, an on-screen installation prompt should appear.
- Read the model and version shown in the prompt. Continue only if they match the TV and the package you selected.
- Follow the on-screen installation steps. Keep the TV connected to power and leave the USB drive in place until the process completes.
- After the TV restarts or reports completion, remove the drive only when the TV is no longer using it.
LG’s older USB guidance also requires the model-specific package and the LG_DTV folder. Its webOS 3.0 page gives an estimated installation time of 1 to 20 minutes; that is a page-specific estimate from LG USA, published in 2025, not a guaranteed duration for current models. See LG’s webOS 3.0 USB instructions.
Internet update or USB update: which route fits?
| Consideration | Internet update | Manual USB update |
|---|---|---|
| Best use | The TV is online and you want the simplest supported installation. | Network updating is unavailable, or you have a reason to install a model-specific file manually. |
| Extra equipment | No USB purchase is needed. | Computer with internet access plus an empty USB drive of at least 1 GB. |
| File selection | The TV checks software offered to its model. | You must select and download the exact model’s package yourself. |
| Preparation | Connect the network and follow the TV’s prompt. | Extract the archive into a precisely named LG_DTV folder. |
| Security meaning | A successful check shows what LG currently offers through that channel; it does not list every patch. | Installing a file does not by itself prove that it contains a security fix; read the model’s release information. |
Troubleshoot common update problems
The Software Update menu is not where the guide says
Use the webOS generation paths in the table rather than assuming every LG remote has the same layout. On webOS 4.5 and earlier, look under General > About This TV. On webOS 5.0 and newer, start under Support > Software Update. LG notes that instructions and images can differ by model; search the exact model on your regional support site if neither path appears.

Confirm the TV is connected to the internet, run the check again, and verify that the model number is correct. Then inspect the model-specific LG software page. Treat the result as “nothing currently offered through this check,” not as proof of complete security coverage or ongoing support.
The download stops or fails
- Check that other devices can use the same network and reconnect the TV if necessary.
- Retry later if the network is unstable.
- Use the model-matched USB procedure only after confirming the file and regional support page.
Do not install a package selected solely by a similar model name or by a generic webOS number.
The TV does not detect the USB package
- Confirm the drive has at least 1 GB of capacity and is empty enough for the package.
- Check that the folder is named exactly
LG_DTVand is at the USB drive’s top level. - Make sure the archive was extracted; placing the compressed archive itself in the folder may not satisfy the TV’s detection routine.
- Re-download the file from the support page for the exact model and region.
- Try another compatible USB drive if the TV still does not recognize a correctly prepared package.
The installation appears stuck
Do not unplug the TV, remove the USB drive, or repeatedly press remote buttons while installation is in progress. LG’s USB guidance specifically warns against disconnecting the TV during installation. If the screen remains unchanged well beyond the model’s instructions, use LG support for that model rather than guessing or applying a second file.
The update installed but an app behaves differently
Software updates can change smart features and streaming-app compatibility. Allow the TV to finish its restart, then check the app again. If the problem is limited to one service, consult that service’s support information; do not downgrade or install an unrelated LG package.

Confirm the result and keep a useful record
- After the TV restarts, open the same Software Update or About This TV area and note the displayed software version.
- Record the TV’s model number, the installed version, the installation date, and whether the update came through the internet or USB.
- Keep the LG model-support URL and any release notes associated with the installed package.
- If you enabled automatic updates, leave the setting visible in your record so another household member knows how future updates will be handled.
A version record helps you answer a concrete question later—whether the TV is running the package LG listed for that model—without implying that the TV menu itself provides a complete security-patch history.
Quick Recap
Key points for security-conscious owners
- Install firmware offered for the exact TV model rather than relying on a generic webOS label.
- Use the TV’s update check for the normal route, and use USB only with LG’s model-matched archive and the required
LG_DTVfolder. - Read model-specific release notes when you need to know whether a named security correction is included.
- Interpret “up to date” narrowly: no newer package was offered at that time through that check.
- For a definitive statement about a particular vulnerability, support lifetime, or regional release, ask LG using the complete model number.
