Update an Arma Reforger dedicated server with SteamCMD, not by replacing files while the game process is running. Stop the server, point SteamCMD at the existing installation, sign in anonymously, run the app ID for the branch you actually host, then restart with the same configuration and profile paths. Stable uses app ID 1874900; Experimental uses 1890870. If clients cannot connect afterward, check the branch and version before changing ports or mods.
What an Arma Reforger server update changes
A dedicated-server update replaces the server binaries and any Steam-delivered files in the installation directory. It does not require creating a new server instance. Your server service, configuration JSON, profile directory, scenario settings and launch options can remain in place, provided you restart the updated executable with those same paths.

validate asks SteamCMD to check the installed files while updating. It can redownload damaged or incomplete files, so the run may take longer than an ordinary check for updates.

Prepare before taking the server offline
Schedule a maintenance window
Tell players when the server will stop and start. The update itself has no universally valid duration: download time depends on the size of the release and your connection, and validation can add more file checks. Do not promise a fixed number of minutes unless you have measured it on your own host.
Find the three paths you must preserve
- Installation directory: the folder containing the dedicated-server executable and Steam files. SteamCMD must update this exact directory.
- Configuration path: the JSON file passed with
-config. It defines the server settings that should survive the update. - Profile path: the directory passed with
-profile. It holds the server’s profile data and must be supplied again at launch.
Write down the complete service command or startup script before stopping anything. A common update mistake is using the right Steam app ID but restarting with a different profile directory, which makes the server appear to have lost its settings.

Confirm the branch and installation target
Look at the command used by your service or launch script. Record whether it uses app ID 1874900 or 1890870, and note the path after force_install_dir. The update script and the running service must refer to the same installation directory; updating a second folder leaves the live server unchanged.
Check storage and make a simple backup
Ensure the host has enough free disk space for the download and temporary files. Keep a copy of your configuration JSON, profile directory and update script. This does not roll back the game binaries, but it lets you restore your launch settings if a service file or path is accidentally changed.
Stop the running server cleanly
- Announce the shutdown and stop the server through the same service manager or control panel that normally starts it.
- Wait for the process to exit. If your supervisor immediately restarts it, disable automatic restart for the maintenance window.
- Check the process list or service status and confirm that no
ArmaReforgerServerprocess is still using the installation directory. - Only after the process has stopped, run SteamCMD. Updating files underneath a running executable can leave that process using old files while other files have already changed.
The official examples update first and launch afterward. Treat that order as part of the procedure rather than trying to apply an update to a live process.

Update with SteamCMD
Use a repeatable runscript
Create a text file such as update_armar_ds.txt in a location your maintenance account can read. This stable-branch example uses a relative installation path:

steamcmd +runscript update_armar_ds.txtFor an Experimental server, change only the app ID line to app_update 1890870 validate. Keep the force_install_dir path aligned with the directory used by your server service. If the script updates ../armar_ds but the service starts a different folder, SteamCMD can report success while players continue reaching the old build.
Run the commands interactively
If you do not want a script, the same sequence can be entered at a SteamCMD prompt:
force_install_dir /absolute/path/to/your/ArmaReforgerServerlogin anonymousapp_update 1874900 validatefor Stable, orapp_update 1890870 validatefor Experimentalquit
Use the absolute path syntax accepted by your operating system. The important parts are selecting the existing installation, logging in anonymously, selecting the correct app ID and waiting for SteamCMD to finish before quitting.
Understand the result before restarting
Read the final SteamCMD output. A completed update should return to the prompt after checking the app and then exit when quit runs. If SteamCMD stops on an error, do not restart the server and assume it is current. Correct the path, permissions, network or storage problem, then run the same branch-specific command again.

Restart with the existing configuration
Linux launch pattern
Bohemia Interactive’s Bash example uses SteamCMD at /usr/games/steamcmd, an installation at /home/<username>/armaR, and a server profile under the user’s configuration directory:

The location /usr/games/steamcmd is an example, not a requirement for every Linux distribution. Likewise, retain your established runtime options; -maxFPS 60 is shown in the official pattern, but you should not add, remove or change launch switches without a reason.
Windows launch
Start the Windows dedicated-server executable from the installation directory after SteamCMD exits. Use the same -config file and -profile directory that the server used before maintenance. If a Windows service or scheduled task supplies those arguments, restart that service instead of opening a second manual instance.
Prevent duplicate processes
Confirm that the old service is stopped before launching the new process. Two instances competing for the same ports can make the updated server appear offline or cause a control panel to display the wrong process. After restart, check the service status and the server log before announcing that the server is available.
Verify the update before inviting players
Check the process and logs
- Confirm the executable is running from the directory you updated.
- Confirm the command line still points to the intended configuration and profile paths.
- Read the startup log for file, permission, configuration and mod errors.
- Verify that the server reaches its normal listening state rather than repeatedly crashing and restarting.
Test the branch match
Use a client on the same branch as the server for the first connection test. A Stable client and an Experimental server are different combinations, even if both were updated on the same day. If a player receives a version or connection error, establish the branch pairing before troubleshooting networking.

Test locally, then externally
If possible, connect from the host or the same local network first. A successful local test shows that the executable and configuration started. A failure only from outside the network points toward firewall, port-forwarding or address-binding rules rather than the SteamCMD update itself.
Fix the common post-update failures
Players see a version or connection error
First compare the server branch with the branch selected by the affected clients. Bohemia Interactive identifies incompatible versions, including Experimental-branch servers, as a cause of multiplayer connection failures. Make sure every player who is testing the server has finished the client update and is not running a different branch through the game launcher.

A process that was never stopped, or a service pointed at a second directory, can continue serving the previous build.
Mods will not download or update
Mod problems after a game update commonly come from a version mismatch, an incomplete download, insufficient storage or a change introduced by the latest game release. Use this isolation sequence:
- Stop the server and check that the host has free storage.
- Restart the server and allow mod downloads to finish instead of interrupting the first startup.
- Check the log for the specific mod and the point at which downloading or loading fails.
- Temporarily disable a recently added or recently changed mod, then test again.
- Re-enable mods one at a time so a conflict is identifiable rather than hiding several changes behind one restart.
Do not treat a successful SteamCMD update as proof that every workshop or server-side mod is compatible. The game files and mod content can fail for different reasons.

The server does not appear in the external list
Review the host firewall and router port-forwarding rules. An externally visible server requires forwarding the relevant game traffic to the machine running the dedicated server. Also confirm that the server is bound to the intended network address and port, and that the service did not start with a different configuration file after the update.

If local access works but the public listing does not, focus on forwarding, firewall and address binding instead of repeatedly reinstalling the server.
SteamCMD updates the wrong folder
Compare the path in force_install_dir with the working directory or executable path in the service definition. Relative paths are resolved from SteamCMD’s current working directory, so the same text can point somewhere different when launched manually, by a scheduled task or by a service manager. Use an absolute path while diagnosing and then update the script and service so both refer to one installation.
The server starts with default-looking settings
Check the -config and -profile arguments in the restart command. If either path is missing or points to a new directory, the executable may create or read a different profile. Stop the duplicate process, restore the original arguments and restart the updated executable from the intended installation directory.
The server repeatedly restarts
Inspect the supervisor and the server log together. A supervisor may hide the first useful error by restarting immediately. Temporarily disable automatic restart, run the same command in the foreground, correct the reported file, permission, configuration or mod issue, and then return the service to its normal supervision policy.

Choose between self-hosting and managed hosting
Bohemia Interactive supports hosting locally or through third-party providers. The right route depends less on the update command than on who will operate the surrounding system. Compare these capabilities before moving an established community:

Whichever route you use, retain the branch app ID, installation path, configuration path and profile path in your maintenance notes. A managed panel can hide SteamCMD, but it cannot remove the need for a compatible client branch, adequate storage or a correctly configured network.
A repeatable update checklist
- Record the current branch: Stable (
1874900) or Experimental (1890870). - Notify players and disable automatic service restarts for the maintenance window.
- Back up the configuration JSON, profile directory and update script.
- Stop the server and verify that no old process remains.
- Run SteamCMD with
force_install_dir,login anonymousand the matchingapp_update ... validatecommand. - Confirm SteamCMD finishes without an error and exits.
- Restart the executable from the updated installation directory using the established
-config,-profileand runtime options. - Read the startup log, verify the listening state and test with a client on the same branch.
- If external players cannot see the server, check firewall, forwarding and address binding; if mods fail, check storage, downloads and recent mod changes.
This sequence keeps the update itself separate from the restart and compatibility checks, making it clear whether a failure came from SteamCMD, the launch command, the client branch, mods or the network.
