Update an All the Mods (ATM) server by stopping it, making a complete rollback backup, downloading the Server Files archive for the exact target release, and installing that archive without overwriting your saved world. The safest workflow is to extract the new files into a separate folder, copy your world and selected server data into it, test the new installation, and only then switch players over.

ATM updates can change Minecraft versions, Forge or NeoForge loaders, libraries, mods, default configuration, and startup scripts. Treat the release number as a matched set: the server, every client, and the loader must come from the same ATM release.

What you need before updating

Plan the update as a short maintenance window. Keep the old installation untouched until the new one has started successfully and players have completed a test connection.

  • Console or panel access: You must be able to stop the server completely and start the replacement installation.
  • Storage for two installations: A separate directory lets you test and roll back without reconstructing the old server.
  • A complete backup destination: Save the world, the server folder, customized configuration, and KubeJS scripts somewhere outside the live directory.
  • The target release number: Decide the exact ATM version before downloading anything. “Latest” is not a compatibility strategy.
  • Player coordination: Everyone should know when the server will be offline and which release to select in their launcher afterward.

Read the target release’s included notes and scripts after downloading. Loader versions and file layouts can change between releases, so those files take precedence over a procedure written for an older pack.

Choose the exact ATM release and Server Files archive

Open the relevant All the Mods project or file index on CurseForge, open the specific release you intend to run, and download its Server Files archive. Do not download the ordinary client profile and attempt to turn it into a server; the server archive contains the expected scripts and supporting files.

Examples of release and loader differences

Pack Release information documented on CurseForge Loader and Minecraft version What to select
ATM10 The project page listed ServerFiles-8.2.zip as the latest server pack on September 22, 2026. Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge Open the exact ATM10 release and download its matching Server Files archive. ATM10 project page
ATM10 file history The file index shows successive 8.0, 8.1, and 8.2 releases, each with a server pack. Loader details belong to each release Use the archive attached to the release you selected, not an older or merely similarly named file. ATM10 files
ATM9 CurseForge lists Server-Files-1.1.1, uploaded October 12, 2025. Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge Select that release’s server archive when targeting ATM9 1.1.1. ATM9 files

The ATM10 and ATM9 examples demonstrate why a folder called “server” or a download labeled “server files” is not enough. ATM10 uses NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1 in the cited listing, while the cited ATM9 server release uses Forge on Minecraft 1.20.1. Copying a loader, library folder, or startup script from one release into another can prevent the server from launching.

Stop the server and make a rollback-quality backup

Use the hosting panel’s stop control or enter stop in the Minecraft server console, then wait until the process has exited. A backup made while chunks are still being written can be incomplete.

Files to preserve

  • The complete server directory: Keeping the entire old folder preserves a known-good rollback point, including scripts and libraries.
  • The world: Copy the whole world directory, including dimensions, player data, advancements, region files, and level metadata.
  • Customized settings: Save server.properties, permission or operator files, allowlists, and any other settings you changed.
  • KubeJS: Back up the complete kubejs directory. Scripts can alter recipes, tags, world generation, startup behavior, and server events.
  • Configuration: Preserve edited files from config and defaultconfigs, but plan to compare them with the new release rather than blindly restoring every old file.
  • Local and map data: Keep local and, when present, Journeymap data if your installation uses them.
  • Startup and acceptance files: Keep eula.txt, launch scripts, and panel-specific settings so the old installation remains reproducible.

Store the backup outside the directory you will update and label it with the ATM release, Minecraft version, loader, and date. Before proceeding, verify that the archive opens and that the world directory has a plausible size; a zero-byte or half-copied backup is not a rollback plan.

Pick an update method

There are three practical approaches. A host-panel update is convenient when the host explicitly supports the ATM pack. An in-place update uses less storage and can be quick, but it is easiest to mix old and new files. A clean-folder update takes longer to switch over but gives you the clearest rollback path.

Method Rollback and downtime Custom files Loader changes Main risk
Host-panel installer Usually simple if the panel retains backups; downtime depends on the host’s workflow. The panel may preserve or replace files according to its own rules; confirm before running it. Good when the installer identifies the target pack and loader correctly. Assuming a one-click action preserved custom configs or selected the intended release.
In-place manual replacement Often the fastest switch, but rollback requires restoring the backup. Requires deliberate backup and reapplication of edited config, defaultconfigs, and kubejs content. Replace libraries and the relevant startup scripts or installer when the Forge/NeoForge version changes. Leaving an old mod, library, script, or configuration beside new files.
Clean-folder installation Best rollback: the old folder stays intact; downtime is the final cutover and test. Copy only the persistent data you need, then reapply and review custom settings. The new archive supplies its own loader files, libraries, and scripts. Forgetting to copy a required persistent file or applying an incompatible old customization.

Method 1: update through a host control panel

Some managed Minecraft hosts provide a modpack installer with a one-click update. The exact labels differ, so do not assume that an item named “update” means “install the release I selected.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop the server and create your own external backup before opening the installer.
  2. Open the panel’s modpack or installer section and choose All the Mods.
  3. Select the exact ATM release and confirm the displayed Minecraft version and Forge or NeoForge loader.
  4. Check whether the panel offers an automatic backup, preserves world, or replaces the complete server directory. Keep your independent backup even if the panel promises protection.
  5. Run the update and wait for the panel to report completion. Do not start the server halfway through extraction or while files are still being synchronized.
  6. Review the generated startup command, loader version, and file list. If the panel does not expose those details, use the clean-folder method instead of guessing.
  7. Start the server privately, inspect the console, and connect with one client on the same ATM release before inviting everyone back.

A panel installer is useful only when it supports the exact pack and loader you need. If it offers an older ATM release, a different Minecraft version, or no way to preserve custom scripts, cancel the operation and perform a manual update.

Method 2: in-place manual update

Use this method when storage is limited or you need to update the existing directory quickly. The key is to replace the pack-managed folders as a set, while preserving and reviewing your own changes.

  • Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
  1. Stop and back up: Complete the backup procedure above before deleting anything.
  2. Extract the target archive elsewhere first: Confirm that it contains the expected Server Files layout and release-specific start scripts.
  3. Inventory customizations: Compare your old config, defaultconfigs, and kubejs directories with the new archive. Copy edited files to a separate staging location, not directly over the new files.
  4. Replace pack-managed folders: In the stopped server directory, remove the old kubejs, defaultconfigs, mods, and config folders, then copy those folders from the target Server Files archive.
  5. Reapply custom work selectively: Merge your saved settings and scripts into the new folders. Prefer the new release’s file structure and defaults; bring back only changes you understand.
  6. Handle a loader change: If the release changes Forge or NeoForge, replace libraries and the relevant startserver scripts or installer from the new archive. Do not retain old loader libraries simply because the filenames look similar.
  7. Leave persistent data in place: Keep the existing world, local, server.properties, eula.txt, and applicable map data unless the target release’s notes explicitly instruct otherwise.
  8. Start and test: Launch the server with the new script, watch for migrations and missing-mod errors, and connect with a test client before reopening the server.

Do not copy the old mods folder back after replacing it. The mod list is part of the target release; adding an old jar can create duplicate, missing-dependency, or registry errors.

Method 3: install into a clean folder

This is the preferred method when you want the lowest-risk rollback. It separates the new pack from unknown leftovers in the old directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create a new directory: Name it with the pack and release, such as ATM10-8.2-test, rather than reusing the old path.
  2. Extract Server Files: Unpack the exact target archive into that directory. Keep its supplied libraries, mods, configuration defaults, installer, and start scripts together.
  3. Complete any supplied setup: Run the included installer or follow the archive’s release notes. Use the target release’s instructions for loader installation and startup parameters.
  4. Copy persistent server data: From the stopped old installation, copy world, local, server.properties, and eula.txt into the new directory. Copy Journeymap data when it is present and you want to retain it.
  5. Reapply custom configuration: Compare old edited files with the new config and defaultconfigs directories. Merge settings one file at a time, keeping backups of both versions.
  6. Reapply KubeJS scripts: Copy your saved scripts only after checking that their referenced items, mods, events, and folder paths still exist in the target release.
  7. Point the host or service at the new path: Change the panel’s working directory or service configuration only after the new folder is complete.
  8. Run a private test: Start the new installation, wait for the console to settle, and join with a matching client. Keep the old folder unchanged until this test passes.

If the new installation fails, stop it and point the service back to the old directory. Because the old folder was not modified, rollback does not require reconstructing files from memory.

Start the updated server and verify it

The first launch can perform data migrations, generate new configuration, or expose a missing dependency. Keep the console visible instead of treating a process that “stays open” as proof of success.

Console and log checks

  • Confirm that the reported Minecraft version and Forge or NeoForge loader match the target release.
  • Look for a normal server-ready message and the absence of repeated crash, registry, dependency, or missing-mod errors.
  • Read warnings about configuration migration. A warning that names a removed or renamed setting may require you to edit the new file rather than restore the old one.
  • Check that the world opens with the expected seed, player data, dimensions, machines, inventories, and claims.
  • Verify that custom KubeJS recipes, scripts, quests, or server events load as intended.
  • Confirm that operators, allowlists, ports, difficulty, view distance, and other values from server.properties are correct.

Test before reconnecting everyone

  1. Join with one client running the exact target ATM release.
  2. Travel to a few known areas and inspect inventories, storage, machines, and important bases.
  3. Test a representative custom recipe or scripted feature if your server uses KubeJS.
  4. Disconnect cleanly, stop the server, and start it once more to verify that the world saves and reloads.
  5. Only after those checks should you announce that the server is open to the rest of the group.

Make every client match the server

A successful server update does not make old client profiles compatible. Every player must select the same ATM pack release, Minecraft version, and loader as the server. CurseForge provides a version-change workflow for changing a modpack profile’s version; players should use that workflow rather than manually mixing individual mods.

Give players the exact release identifier you installed, such as the ATM10 release associated with ServerFiles-8.2.zip or the ATM9 release associated with Server-Files-1.1.1. Ask them to restart the launcher after changing versions and to remove any manually added mods that are not part of the selected profile.

Typical client symptoms

  • “Incompatible mod list” or a handshake failure: The client and server are on different ATM releases or one side has an extra or missing mod.
  • Loader-version error: The client uses Forge while the server requires NeoForge, or the loader build does not match the profile.
  • Registry or missing-item errors after joining: The client may have retained an old configuration or manually installed jar. Recreate or repair the profile from the exact release.
  • Connection works but content is missing: Check that the launcher actually switched the profile version and that the server itself started from the intended directory.

Common failures and recovery steps

Symptom Likely cause Recovery
The server exits immediately after the update. Wrong Java or loader requirement, incomplete installer run, or an incompatible startup script. Read the first error in the console, compare the target archive’s notes, and use the supplied script and libraries. If the cause is unclear, restore the old folder and retry in a clean directory.
“Missing dependency” or “mod not found.” An old or partial mods directory, or files copied from a different ATM release. Stop the server, remove the mixed pack-managed folders, extract the exact Server Files archive again, and do not add old jars.
The world appears new or empty. The service points to the new folder without the old world, or level-name in server.properties differs. Stop immediately, verify the world backup, copy the correct world directory, and confirm the configured level name before restarting.
Custom recipes or scripts fail. KubeJS references changed item IDs, mods, events, or APIs. Read the KubeJS error, compare the script with the target release’s mod list, and port the customization deliberately rather than restoring the entire old folder.
Players cannot connect after the server starts. Client release, Minecraft version, loader, or mod list does not match. Have each player switch to the exact ATM release through the launcher’s version workflow and remove manual additions.
The panel starts the old pack. The service still uses the old working directory or startup script. Stop the service, verify its path and launch command, then point it to the tested clean folder. Keep the old path available for rollback.

RAM and operational requirements

The official All the Mods server guidance lists at least 6 GB of allocated RAM for most ATM packs as a baseline. That is a general operating guideline, not a special amount required by every update, and it does not guarantee adequate performance for a large world or many players. The cited guidance does not publish a universal RAM increase, downtime duration, or update time.

During an update, leave enough disk space for the old backup and the new installation. Do not delete the backup immediately after the first successful login: let the server run long enough for you to verify saving, restarts, custom content, and player access.

Managed hosting checklist

If you use Minecraft modpack server hosting, verify these points before committing to a one-click update:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The provider lists the exact ATM pack and release you need.
  • It supports the required Minecraft version and the correct Forge or NeoForge loader.
  • Its backup system can restore the world and server files, not only a database or configuration snapshot.
  • You can select a specific release instead of being forced to “latest.”
  • You can review or restore customized config, defaultconfigs, and kubejs files.
  • You can change the working directory or startup script if you choose the clean-folder method.
  • The panel exposes console and log output so you can diagnose a failed migration.

The official server guidance notes that some hosts provide a modpack installer and one-click updates. Those controls are conveniences, not substitutes for an independent backup and release verification. See the All the Mods server guide for the general server baseline and host-related guidance.

Recommended repeatable workflow

For future ATM updates, use this order every time: announce maintenance, stop the server, verify an external backup, select the exact release, extract its Server Files into a clean folder, copy persistent data, merge custom settings and KubeJS scripts, start privately, inspect logs, test with one matched client, and then switch players over. Retain the old folder until the new release has survived a restart and a real gameplay check.
