Update AhsayCBS as a controlled, version-specific maintenance project: verify the target release and platform requirements, back up configuration and custom files, pause AhsayOBM/AhsayACB auto-updates, upgrade using the Windows, Linux, or FreeBSD procedure that matches your installation, and validate services, console access, clients, and logs before reopening updates. Then reduce exposure with Ahsay’s documented TLS/cipher, perfect-forward-secrecy, HSTS, and web-console IP restrictions.
The exact sequence depends on your starting version, operating system, branded deployment, and client mix. A Windows procedure is not a universal substitute for the Linux or FreeBSD procedure.
What to confirm before scheduling the upgrade
Ahsay’s v10 upgrade overview is written for administrators and service providers performing an in-place upgrade. Start with the live Ahsay release notes and the platform procedure for your installation. Version availability and compatibility can change; the index available for this assignment lists v10.3.4 dated 5 August 2026, while v10.3.2 release notes are dated 20 July 2026.

Identify the actual installation
- Record the current AhsayCBS version and the intended target version.
- Record whether the installation is standard or branded, including custom service names, installation paths, branding files, CSS, report templates, and offline installers.
- Record the operating system: Windows, Linux, or FreeBSD. Linux guidance covers distributions including CentOS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu, and Debian, but the commands and service management still depend on the distribution.
- List every AhsayOBM and AhsayACB client version that connects. Legacy clients can determine whether particular security settings are safe.
Check release, license, and health prerequisites
Read the target release notes, hardware requirements, software compatibility list, and version-specific administration changes. Ahsay advises resolving existing server problems before an upgrade rather than carrying an unhealthy installation into the maintenance window.

Confirm that the license has active support or maintenance and is eligible to run the target release. An installer completing successfully does not make an ineligible license usable.
Meet v10 runtime and storage requirements
Ahsay states: “AhsayCBS v10 only supports OpenJDK 21.” OpenJDK is bundled with the Windows and Linux installers. FreeBSD administrators must install OpenJDK 21 themselves before running the v10 procedure. Linux and FreeBSD installations also require GLIBC 2.31 or later.
If this is the first move from a pre-v9 release to v10, reserve as much as twice the free destination storage currently available. Ahsay describes this as planning capacity for conversion to deduplication-optimized blocks; it is a vendor planning estimate, not a universal measured requirement. Check the actual data set, free space, and filesystem capacity before starting.
Back up the server and customizations
Keep backups on a separate destination from the AhsayCBS host. A backup that sits only on the server being upgraded does not provide a practical rollback path.
Use Auto Save when the package fits
In the web management console, open System Settings > Advanced > Auto Save and verify the last upload date. Ahsay’s cloud configuration package limit is 50 MB. If the package is within that limit, create a current package and verify that the upload completed.
Use a manual configuration backup when necessary
If the Auto Save package exceeds 50 MB, Ahsay recommends a manual backup of configuration settings. Preserve the configuration, branding data, system home, offline client installers, and any locally modified CSS or report templates identified by your deployment. Also retain the information needed to restore service names, paths, certificates, scheduled tasks, and external integrations.

- Label the backup with the source version, target version, date, and host.
- Store at least one copy on a separate system or protected storage location.
- Confirm that files can be read and that permissions and ownership information are documented where the platform requires them.
- Export branding JSON before a branded Windows upgrade. Rebuilding branded clients may be required afterward.
Pause client updates before touching the server
Do not let clients change at the same time as the server. First pause AhsayOBM/AhsayACB auto-update, then upgrade and test AhsayCBS, and only then reopen client updates.

Ahsay recommends managing the auto-update setting per user in the web management console. Use this when different customer groups require different maintenance treatment or when you need an auditable list of affected accounts.
Temporary global control
Ahsay’s pre-upgrade guidance also describes a global pause by renaming index.xml in the live-update directory to index.xml.disable. Record the original location and name so it can be restored deliberately after validation. This pause gives you time to verify the server and rebuild branded clients before endpoints receive a new package.
Run the platform-specific upgrade
Use Ahsay’s current procedure for the operating system and starting version. The following Windows sequence illustrates the maintenance flow; Linux and FreeBSD administrators should not infer that these service commands, paths, or installer steps apply to their systems.
Windows
- Sign in with Windows administrator privileges and confirm the configuration and customization backups are complete.
- Export branding JSON if the server is branded. Identify the administrator and primary sub-administrator accounts for which new branded clients may need to be rebuilt.
- Stop the AhsayCBS service. Branded deployments may use a custom service name.
- Run the Ahsay installer for the target release.
- When prompted, allow migration of the existing settings. Do not point the installer at an unverified empty configuration unless the vendor procedure for your path explicitly requires it.
- Start the AhsayCBS service after installation finishes.
- Keep client auto-update paused while you perform the post-upgrade checks.
For a branded installation, rebuild clients for the administrator and primary sub-administrator accounts before making those new clients available. Confirm custom paths and service names rather than assuming the standard layout.

Follow the Ahsay procedure for the particular Linux family, whether CentOS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu, or Debian. Verify GLIBC 2.31 or later and OpenJDK 21, stop and start the service using the distribution’s documented service mechanism, and preserve the existing configuration as directed by the installer. Do not copy Windows service names, filesystem paths, or privilege assumptions into a Linux runbook.

FreeBSD
Install and verify OpenJDK 21 manually before the upgrade. Confirm GLIBC 2.31 or later where required by the supported installation, then follow the FreeBSD-specific Ahsay procedure for stopping the service, running the upgrade, and starting it again. FreeBSD’s service layout and package management are not interchangeable with Windows or Linux instructions.
Validate the upgraded server before reopening updates
Validation should establish that the service is running, administrators can reach the console, core settings survived migration, and representative clients can connect.
Service and log checks
- Confirm the AhsayCBS service is running and remains running after a restart.
- Inspect the new startup and migration messages for errors, warnings, failed bindings, permission problems, or database and configuration conversion failures.
- On Windows, review the log files named in Ahsay’s checklist, including
catalina_yyyy-mm-dd.log,console_yyyy-mm-dd.log, andobs_context_yyyy-mm-dd.log. - Check available disk space after startup, especially after a pre-v9 to v10 conversion.
Console, HTTPS, and configuration checks
- Open the web console over HTTPS from more than one browser or administrative workstation.
- Verify the host name and certificate behavior, SMTP settings, user profiles, backup groups, policy groups, and license usage.
- Confirm that administrator and sub-administrator permissions still match the intended design.
- Open client download links and verify that they point to the expected server and branded or standard packages.
- For branded deployments, check branding elements and the rebuilt clients before distribution.
Client connection checks
Run a connection test from representative AhsayOBM and AhsayACB clients, including the oldest supported client still in service. Check authentication, policy retrieval, backup-job visibility, and a controlled connection or test job. A server that displays a working console but rejects client negotiation is not ready for broad rollout.

If a check fails, leave updates paused, preserve the logs, and use the documented rollback or support path for the affected version rather than distributing a new client build.
Reduce the exposed attack surface after the upgrade
Updating removes defects addressed by the target release, but it does not by itself limit who can reach the console or which protocols clients can negotiate. Apply the following controls separately: TLS and browser-policy hardening protects transport; an allowed-IP range limits administrative reachability. One does not replace the other.
Harden TLS and cipher settings
Ahsay’s security guidance for AhsayCBS 8.1 and later covers strong cipher and TLS protocol settings, perfect forward secrecy, and HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS). Use the current vendor procedure and test every supported client before enforcing a narrower protocol or cipher set.

Ahsay warns that this hardening procedure should be used only when no version 6 AhsayOBM or AhsayACB client connects to the server. Inventory actual client versions first; a nominally inactive account is not evidence that no v6 client remains in use.
Enable HSTS deliberately
HSTS tells browsers to use HTTPS for a specified period. Ahsay’s documented example sets hstsMaxAgeSeconds to 31536000 seconds. Treat that as the value in Ahsay’s example, not as an independently established universal recommendation. Before enabling a long policy, confirm that every intended console hostname has a valid certificate and HTTPS path; an HSTS browser can make an HTTP recovery path unavailable until the policy expires or is cleared.
Restrict web-console IP access
Ahsay documents an IP filter in cbs.json. The relevant settings are AllowedIPOnServerOptions and AllowedIPOnServerOptionsCol. Edit the file as directed by the current Ahsay procedure, configure the range used by authorized administrators, and restart the AhsayCBS service.
The range shown in Ahsay’s article is illustrative, not a universal recommendation. Use the smallest range that matches your administrative network, VPN, bastion, or management subnets. Keep an administrative recovery path: test from an allowed workstation before closing the existing session, and document an out-of-band method for correcting an overly restrictive rule.

AhsayCBS v10.3.2 release notes dated 20 July 2026 list “Ahsay Security Patchset – 2026/Q3” and a change that hides a user’s hashed password under User Profile. Because the upgrade index lists a later v10.3.4 release dated 5 August 2026, do not present v10.3.2 as the latest release. Check the live release notes, supported upgrade path, and compatibility list immediately before scheduling maintenance.
Apply the newest release that your starting version, license, platform, and client estate can support. If the supported path requires an intermediate release, plan each migration and validation checkpoint rather than skipping directly to an unverified installer.

Common failure points and recovery decisions
The installer will not start or the service will not remain running
- Recheck license eligibility, OpenJDK 21, and—on Linux or FreeBSD—GLIBC 2.31 or later.
- Confirm that the service account can read the installation and configuration paths.
- Inspect the platform logs before retrying; repeated starts can overwrite useful diagnostic context.
- Verify that another process is not occupying the required ports.
There is not enough storage during a v10 migration
Stop the migration if the destination cannot maintain adequate free space. The pre-v9 to v10 deduplication-block conversion can require up to twice the free destination storage. Do not delete configuration, logs, or backup data merely to force completion; expand or relocate storage according to the supported procedure, then use the preserved backup and documented recovery plan.
Clients cannot connect after TLS changes
First identify the client versions and the negotiated protocol or cipher. A version 6 client is specifically incompatible with Ahsay’s documented hardening procedure. Keep the server in the previously validated state while you determine whether the client must be upgraded, retired, or isolated; do not broadly weaken TLS without a defined compatibility decision.
Administrators are locked out after IP filtering
Use the documented service stop, configuration restoration, and restart process from an authorized recovery channel. This is why the allowed range must be tested from a second administrative workstation and why an out-of-band recovery path belongs in the change record.

Branded downloads are wrong or unavailable
Check that branding JSON was exported before the Windows upgrade, that branding files and custom templates were restored or migrated, and that clients were rebuilt for the administrator and primary sub-administrator accounts. Keep auto-update disabled until a downloaded client is inspected and a connection test succeeds.
A practical maintenance-window checklist
- Target release notes, hardware requirements, compatibility list, and administration changes reviewed.
- Current version, operating system, branded status, custom paths, and client versions recorded.
- Server health issues resolved; license support and target-version eligibility confirmed.
- Auto Save upload date checked; manual configuration and customization backup completed when needed.
- Backups copied to a separate destination and restoration information documented.
- OpenJDK 21 and Linux/FreeBSD GLIBC requirements verified for v10.
- Extra storage reserved for a pre-v9 to v10 conversion.
- AhsayOBM/AhsayACB auto-update paused per user or through the documented temporary global method.
- Platform-specific upgrade completed with the correct privileges and service procedure.
- Service state, logs, HTTPS console, host name, SMTP, profiles, groups, license usage, downloads, branding, and client connections checked.
- TLS, cipher, perfect-forward-secrecy, HSTS, and IP-filter changes reviewed for legacy-client impact and tested separately.
- Auto-update reopened only after all checks pass.
When to use vendor assistance
Ahsay recommends its Professional Services for readers who want help with an upgrade. Treat that as a support option, not as a substitute for documenting your versions, backups, client inventory, and recovery path. Confirm the current service scope and commercial terms directly before engaging it.
