The safe way to update a self-hosted GitLab server is to treat the change as a migration, not a package install: identify the exact source and target versions, follow every required upgrade stop, take a version-matched backup or instance snapshot, pause writes and CI/CD, perform the deployment-specific upgrade, wait for background migrations, and verify the application before reopening traffic. A tested rollback restores the previous GitLab version, database, secrets, and configuration if the new release cannot pass health checks.
What makes a GitLab upgrade safe?
A GitLab upgrade changes application code and, in many releases, the database schema. The procedure is safe only when the release path, data protection, service topology, and recovery steps are known in advance. GitLab’s own guidance describes a rollback plan as a clear path back to the last working state. That path must exist before the maintenance window begins.
- Known versions: Record the exact GitLab edition and current patch level, then select a supported target patch release.
- Supported path: Follow GitLab’s required upgrade-stop versions and let migrations finish at every stop.
- Recoverable data: Keep a tested backup or snapshot that matches the version and edition you will restore.
- Controlled writes: Pause pipelines, runners, application writers, and other jobs that can change data during the upgrade.
- Observable result: Run GitLab’s health checks and test the user-facing functions your instance actually provides.
1. Inventory the installation before choosing a date
Write down the current state of the whole GitLab service, not just the Rails application. This inventory determines which upgrade procedure applies and exposes dependencies that can be missed during an emergency.
Record versions and installation method
- GitLab edition (Community Edition or Enterprise Edition), exact version, and patch number.
- Installation method: Linux package, Docker, Helm chart, GitLab Operator, or source installation.
- Operating-system release and architecture, including whether it remains supported by the target GitLab version.
- Number of application, Sidekiq, Gitaly, database, Redis, and supporting nodes.
Map external services and integrations
Document whether PostgreSQL, Redis, Gitaly, PgBouncer, Consul, object storage, Geo, runners, Kubernetes agents, or a search service run outside the main GitLab node. Note hostnames, ports, TLS certificates, credentials-management locations, replication roles, and maintenance procedures. An upgrade plan that covers only the web node is incomplete when the database or Gitaly service is external.

Check release and maintenance requirements
Review GitLab’s release and maintenance policy, version-specific upgrade notes, operating-system compatibility, Geo requirements, required upgrade stops, and health-check instructions for both the source and target releases. Confirm that every dependency and integration is supported at the destination. Clone the production topology in a non-production environment and rehearse the complete procedure there, including restoration.
2. Select the correct upgrade path
Enter the exact source and target versions in GitLab’s upgrade-path tool and read the notes for each resulting step. Do not assume that a large jump can be handled by changing one package or container tag.

Some major.minor releases are mandatory stops for some or all environments because they contain fixes needed by the upgrade process. Install the latest patch release available in each required major.minor line rather than the first patch release. At every stop, keep the instance running long enough for database background migrations to complete before continuing.
Classify the span of the change
| Upgrade span | Planning implication | Migration and availability concern |
|---|---|---|
| Patch within the same major.minor line | Usually the smallest change, but still verify release notes, compatibility, and rollback. | Foreground or background migrations may still occur; do not skip health checks. |
| Several minor releases | Use every required stop from the upgrade-path tool and schedule enough time for each migration phase. | GitLab requires the instance to be taken offline when upgrading across multiple minor releases. |
| Major release | Review all intermediate stops, deprecations, database requirements, and integration changes. | Expect longer migrations and a more demanding rollback because schema changes may span several releases. |
Save the selected path, package or image versions, chart versions, and configuration changes in the change record. This is the runbook the operator follows during the window and the evidence needed for a rollback.
3. Build and test the backup and rollback plan
A backup is useful only if it can be restored with the software version that created it. GitLab’s rollback guidance requires at least a database backup made under the exact same GitLab version and edition you intend to restore.
Protect every stateful component
| Item | What to preserve | Why it matters during rollback |
|---|---|---|
| Database | A GitLab backup or database backup created at the exact source version and edition. | Database migrations can change the schema; an older application cannot safely use a database left at the new schema. |
| Secrets | The GitLab secrets file and the protected copy of any encryption or signing keys. | Without the original secrets, encrypted variables, tokens, two-factor data, and other protected values may be unreadable. |
| Configuration | Application configuration files, environment variables, TLS material, external-service settings, and custom hooks. | The restored application must reconnect to the same services with the same security settings. |
| Repositories and uploads | Repository, artifact, registry, upload, package, LFS, pages, and Terraform-state data according to your installation’s storage design. | A database-only restore does not recreate objects stored outside PostgreSQL. |
| Multi-node infrastructure | An instance snapshot of every node when that is your approved recovery method, or coordinated backups for each service. | Mixed node states can leave Rails, Gitaly, Redis, or database data inconsistent after a failed change. |
Rehearse restoration
- Restore the database backup into a production-like, isolated environment.
- Install the exact GitLab version and edition that created the backup.
- Restore secrets and configuration, then reconnect repository and object storage.
- Start the services and confirm sign-in, repository cloning, pushes, jobs, and any Geo or search functions your users need.
- Record the elapsed time, commands, permissions fixes, and any missing data. Update the rollback runbook before production.
Keep the backup immutable or otherwise protected from the upgrade process, and verify that the storage location remains available throughout the maintenance window.

docker exec -t <container name> gitlab-backup create SKIP=artifacts,repositories,registry,uploads,builds,pages,lfs,packages,terraform_state
Preserve the container’s secrets file as well as the excluded repositories, artifacts, registry data, uploads, builds, pages, LFS objects, packages, and Terraform state. A database-only backup without those files is not a complete instance recovery.
4. Choose downtime or a zero-downtime sequence
| Situation | Appropriate approach | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Single-node GitLab | Planned downtime with the application stopped while packages, schema, and services are updated. | GitLab states that a single-node instance must be upgraded with downtime. |
| Multi-node installation with a supported HA design | Either a controlled downtime procedure or sequential node upgrades behind load balancing and HA controls. | Zero-downtime behavior depends on the exact architecture and release; test the sequence rather than assuming every topology supports it. |
| Upgrade across multiple minor releases | Take the instance offline and complete each required stop. | The migration sequence and schema changes make an uninterrupted jump unsuitable. |
| Helm or Operator deployment | Use the chart or Operator’s documented rolling or maintenance procedure. | Migration jobs, maintenance mode, and temporary migration settings can differ from package-based installs. |
Define the availability target, maximum maintenance duration, abort point, and person authorized to invoke rollback. A short planned outage is safer than an improvised zero-downtime attempt on an untested topology.
5. Freeze writes and CI/CD activity
Before changing packages or running migrations, pause CI/CD pipelines and jobs. GitLab warns that runner trace updates can fail while the instance is being upgraded. Stop scheduled pipelines, deployment automation, repository mirroring, import/export jobs, and any custom integration that writes through the API.
Recommended Free Tools
For a downtime procedure, shut down application writers before database migrations begin. Leave read-only status communication available if possible, and tell users when pushes, merges, API writes, registry uploads, and job starts will resume. Record the pause time so you can identify activity that was accidentally started during the window.
6. Execute the upgrade for your deployment method
Linux package installation
- Confirm the package repository contains the exact required stop and target patch versions.
- Set the maintenance page or load-balancer drain, pause writers, and stop application services for the chosen downtime procedure.
- Upgrade one required version at a time, running the package’s reconfiguration step as documented for that release.
- Wait for background migrations and service health to settle before moving to the next stop.
- Start the services, run the verification checks, and only then return traffic.
Do not remove old packages, delete shared storage, or overwrite the source-version backup until the target has passed verification and the rollback retention period.
Docker deployment
- Pin the container image to the selected GitLab patch version instead of using a floating tag.
- Back up the database and preserve secrets and external data as described above.
- Stop or drain the current container after pausing writers, then recreate it with the new image and the same persistent volumes and configuration.
- Watch container logs, database migrations, Sidekiq startup, and health endpoints until they report a stable state.
- Run the post-upgrade checks before enabling runners and API clients.
Keep the previous image available locally or in the registry so a rollback can install the exact source version without relying on a network connection during an incident.
Helm deployment
Follow the chart version procedure for the GitLab release, including chart values, migration jobs, maintenance mode, and post-migration checks. Review changes to ingress, storage classes, database connectivity, and resource limits before applying the release. During a major database upgrade, GitLab notes that migrations may need to be disabled temporarily and explicitly re-enabled afterward; if that setting is used, record who will turn migrations back on and verify that they are running before reopening traffic.

GitLab Operator deployment
The default zero-downtime Operator path updates one minor version at a time. Apply the documented custom resource change, watch each reconciled component, and wait for migrations and readiness conditions before proceeding. A downtime path requires a maintenance window and a tested backup. Do not delete the old custom resource or persistent volumes until verification is complete.
Source installation
Check out the exact tagged GitLab source version, install the matching dependencies, run the documented database migration and asset-compilation tasks, and preserve the previous release checkout for rollback. Keep service-manager definitions, Ruby or Node dependency versions, and custom patches in the change record. Source deployments require especially careful rehearsal because package-manager safeguards may not exist.
Multi-node downtime sequence
For a multi-node installation using a controlled outage, GitLab’s documented order is:
- Drain traffic and shut down the application and its writers.
- Upgrade Consul where used.
- Upgrade Gitaly.
- Upgrade Rails application nodes.
- Upgrade PostgreSQL.
- Upgrade Redis.
- Upgrade PgBouncer where used.
- Start the application and supporting services, then verify the complete stack.
Use the order and controls appropriate to your topology; external service ownership, replication, and failover tooling can add steps that are not visible from the GitLab application node.
Multi-node zero-downtime sequence
Upgrade nodes sequentially behind the load balancer and HA controls, keeping enough healthy capacity to serve traffic. Drain one node, upgrade it, wait for readiness and migration status, return it to service, and only then continue. Distributed zero-downtime behavior is architecture-specific, and background migrations can appear in monthly releases, so validate compatibility between old and new nodes in a staging clone first.
7. Verify the instance before reopening traffic
Verification is a gate, not a formality. Run the checks while the maintenance controls are still in place so a failure cannot create new writes or partial jobs.
Run GitLab’s core checks
sudo gitlab-rake gitlab:check
sudo gitlab-rake gitlab:doctor:secrets
Check the database background-migration status and confirm that all migrations are complete before proceeding to the next required stop or reopening traffic. GitLab explicitly recommends these checks and migration verification.

Exercise the user paths that matter
- Sign in with a normal user and an administrator account; confirm two-factor authentication and protected variables are readable.
- Browse a project, clone over the protocols you support, fetch, create a test branch, and push or merge a controlled change.
- Open the web interface and make authenticated API requests; check error rates in the reverse proxy and application logs.
- Inspect Sidekiq queues, scheduled jobs, and runner registration, then run a small CI job after the application is approved.
- Upload and download a representative artifact or package, and test the container registry if enabled.
- Check Gitaly connectivity, repository integrity signals, Geo replication, Kubernetes agents, and search indexing when those integrations are part of your service.
- Confirm monitoring, backups, log shipping, TLS certificates, and alerting still function with the new version.
Compare queue depth, database connections, latency, and error logs with the pre-upgrade baseline. Keep CI/CD paused until the checks pass, then resume workloads gradually while watching for delayed failures.
8. Roll back a failed upgrade
Rollback is warranted when the target version cannot pass the agreed health gates, data is inaccessible, or a critical integration remains broken and cannot be repaired within the window.
- Declare the rollback, stop new writes, pause runners, and drain traffic.
- Stop the new GitLab services and prevent them from restarting automatically while recovery is in progress.
- Install the exact prior GitLab version and edition, using the retained package, image, chart, Operator version, or source checkout.
- Restore the matching database backup made under that prior version and edition.
- Restore the original secrets file, configuration, TLS material, and external object or repository data as required.
- Start the prior stack and run
gitlab:check, gitlab:doctor:secrets, migration-status checks, and the critical user-path tests. - Reopen traffic only after the restored instance is healthy, then document the failure and preserve logs for diagnosis.
Do not point the old application at a database that has only been migrated to the new schema. GitLab notes that the backup is required to reverse schema changes made by migrations; reinstalling old binaries alone is not a rollback.

Before the maintenance window
- Source, target, edition, required stops, patch releases, and compatibility notes are recorded.
- Topology, external services, integrations, owners, and contacts are documented.
- Upgrade and rollback procedures were rehearsed in a production-like clone.
- Version-matched database backup, secrets, configuration, repositories, and object data are restorable.
- Downtime or zero-downtime sequence, abort criteria, communication, and approval are agreed.
During the change
- CI/CD, runners, scheduled jobs, and other writers are paused.
- Each required stop is completed in order and background migrations are allowed to finish.
- Logs, readiness, database health, queue state, and storage capacity are monitored.
- The previous package, image, chart, or source release remains available for rollback.
After the change
- Core Rake checks pass and all migrations report complete.
- Web, API, Git, Gitaly, Sidekiq, runners, registry, Geo, search, and agent paths used by the organization work.
- CI/CD is resumed gradually with monitoring.
- Backups and alerting succeed on the new version.
- The change record includes versions, timings, warnings, and any follow-up remediation.
Common failure modes and the right response
The upgrade tool shows an unexpected stop
Stop the change and recalculate the path from the exact installed version. Do not skip the newly identified release; required stops exist to apply upgrade-process fixes.
Migrations are still running
Keep traffic and writes controlled, monitor migration progress and database capacity, and wait for completion. Advancing to the next release while migrations are incomplete can leave the instance in an unsupported state.
Runners report trace or job errors
Keep runners paused while the application is unavailable or changing. After health checks pass, re-enable a small runner group, run a test job, and then restore normal concurrency.
Secrets or encrypted values fail after restoration
Stop the restored service and verify that the original secrets file and permissions were restored to every relevant node. A database restore without matching secrets cannot recover encrypted data reliably.

A zero-downtime node becomes unhealthy
Remove that node from the load balancer, preserve service on healthy nodes, inspect its logs and migration status, and either repair it or revert that node to the prior version. Do not continue upgrading additional nodes until compatibility is understood.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Storage or database capacity is exhausted
Keep the maintenance state, resolve capacity or long-running transaction pressure, and re-check migration progress. If the target cannot complete within the approved window, use the tested rollback rather than deleting data or forcing a migration.
When is zero downtime realistic?
Zero downtime is a property of a tested topology, not a switch in the GitLab interface. It is most credible when multiple application nodes sit behind a load balancer, the database and Redis layers have appropriate HA controls, old and new nodes are compatible for the release span, and migrations are designed to run while both versions serve traffic. A single-node instance cannot meet that condition, and a multi-minor upgrade still requires an offline procedure. If any dependency, custom integration, or migration behavior is uncertain, schedule downtime and protect the data instead of optimizing for an unproven availability claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a GitLab maintenance window be?
Use the rehearsal to measure package installation, migrations, verification, and rollback, then add contingency time for the slowest database migration and storage operation. GitLab does not publish one universal duration because topology, release span, and data volume differ.
Can I skip an intermediate GitLab version if the package manager allows it?
No. Use GitLab’s upgrade-path tool and complete every required stop. A package manager accepting a direct version change does not make the database and migration path supported.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs a virtual-machine snapshot enough for rollback?
Only when it captures every relevant node and stateful dependency consistently and your restoration rehearsal proves it works. Otherwise combine coordinated backups with snapshots and always preserve the version-matched database, secrets, configuration, repositories, and object data.
What should remain paused after the upgrade?
Keep CI/CD, runners, scheduled jobs, and other writers paused until core checks, migration completion, and representative web, Git, API, storage, and integration tests pass. Resume gradually while monitoring queues and errors.
