To update a Samsung Galaxy, open Settings > Software update > Download and install, then follow the on-screen prompts. Some phones use different labels, such as Check for updates or System updates. Updates roll out by model, country, and carrier, so a phone that reports it is up to date may simply not be eligible yet.
Update your Galaxy in Settings
- Connect to Wi-Fi if practical and make sure the battery is sufficiently charged. Samsung India recommends at least 20% battery for its instructions, but requirements and wording can vary by market and model. Samsung India’s update guide provides its local guidance.
- Open Settings and tap Software update. Some devices show System updates instead.
- Tap Download and install, Check for updates, or the equivalent option shown on your phone. A carrier may add another system-update check.
- If an update is offered, follow the prompts and let the phone complete installation. It may restart. Avoid interrupting the process.
If the phone says it is up to date, that means no update is currently offered to that device through that check. It does not establish when another release will arrive.
Prepare for installation and know what changes
Samsung recommends Wi-Fi and sufficient battery before starting. For an update through Smart Switch, do not disconnect the USB cable or use the phone while the update is in progress. Samsung India warns that after updating to the latest software, a device cannot be downgraded to an earlier firmware version under its enhanced security policies; do not assume you can roll an update back.

Check your Android, One UI, and security details
To see the installed software, open Settings > About phone > Software information. Depending on the model and software, the page can list the Android version, One UI version, and build details. These are distinct from the security patch level. On supported layouts, security-update details are under Settings > Security and privacy > Updates > Security update. Samsung’s security update information can help identify model-specific security coverage.

If you contact a carrier about an update, note the phone’s exact model and software information first. Carrier-specific update details may be handled by the original carrier, even if the phone has since been SIM-unlocked.
Why a Samsung update may not appear
Samsung releases updates on schedules that can vary by model, location, and mobile carrier. Releases may also arrive in waves, so an announcement does not mean every eligible phone can install the update immediately. An unlocked phone is not guaranteed to receive every update first, and a carrier-branded device may remain tied to its original carrier’s release process after SIM unlocking. - The update was announced recently: The rollout may still be staged. Samsung does not establish one universal wait time or release cadence for all Galaxy phones.
- The phone is carrier-specific: Check release information with the original carrier, using the exact model and country.
- The phone says it is current: This confirms only that no update is offered through the current check; it does not guarantee a future release or date.
- The device is older: Do not assume it is eligible for the newest Android or One UI release. Eligibility and timing depend on the specific model and market.
Try Smart Switch if the phone check does not work
Samsung Smart Switch for Windows or Mac is an official alternative for checking and installing an update. It is useful when an on-device download repeatedly fails or you want to check through a computer, but it can only install an update Samsung offers for that device.

- Connect the phone with a USB cable that supports data transfer, not just charging. The cable supplied with the phone may work if it supports file transfer.
- Follow any prompts on the phone and in Smart Switch. If an update is available, the program will prompt you to proceed.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the phone during the update. Allow the installation and any restart to finish.
Smart Switch does not override carrier eligibility or make unreleased firmware available. If it reports no update, that is not proof that a different regional or carrier release exists for your device.

Choose the update route that fits

Use the phone’s Settings route when it works. Choose Smart Switch if you have a computer and compatible data cable and want an alternate check; neither route can install a release that has not been made available for your phone.
If an update download or installation fails
- Connect to Wi-Fi and check again in Settings > Software update. Some carriers require Wi-Fi for downloading.
- Confirm the exact model, country, and original carrier, then check the carrier’s release information if the device is carrier-specific.
- If the release was just announced, allow for a staged rollout rather than repeatedly assuming the announcement applies to every device immediately.
- If the download or installation keeps failing, check with Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac, following the cable and interruption precautions above.
- For security-patch questions, consult Samsung’s security update resource and check the phone’s Security update entry if that menu is available.
Set automatic updates if your phone offers them
Samsung devices may include automatic-download controls, often with an option to download over Wi-Fi, and some notify you when an update is ready. Labels and scheduled-installation options are not identical on every phone. Inspect Settings > Software update and use only the controls shown on your device.
