On PS5, highlight a game on the Games home screen, press the controller’s Options button, and choose Check for Update. To see the installed build, open Options > Information and look for Version number when that field is provided by the game. You can also configure the console to download or install updates automatically in Rest Mode.
Check for a game update manually
A manual check is the most direct way to find out whether a particular game has an update waiting. It does not require you to change automatic-update settings, and it lets you decide when to start the download or installation.
Before you begin
Make sure the PS5 is on the Games home screen and that the title you want is visible as a game tile. You do not need to launch the game first. The console must be able to contact PlayStation’s update service, so an internet connection is required for the check and for downloading an update. No USB drive is needed for the normal game-update process.
If the title is not on the first row, move through the game library until you find it, then highlight the correct edition. A disc version, a digital version, or a separate PS4 and PS5 listing can appear as different entries. Check the tile name before opening the Options menu so you do not update a different installation by mistake.

Use Check for Update
- From the PS5 Games home screen, highlight the game tile you want to update. Do not open the game yet.
- Press the Options button on the DualSense controller.
- Select Check for Update.
- If the console reports that an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it.
If no update is offered, the console has not found a newer package for that installation at the time of the check. That result does not change the game’s version number, and it is separate from the PS5’s system-software status. If you are expecting a patch, run the check again after confirming that the PS5 is online and that you selected the intended game tile.
PlayStation also states that starting a game or app automatically updates it to the newest version available. A manual check is still useful when you want to verify availability before launching, or when you suspect an update has not been picked up yet. Starting a game is not a substitute for checking the installed version; use the Information menu described below when you need the number itself.
See the version currently installed
The installed version number identifies the game build that is on your console. It is different from the PS5’s own system-software version. Knowing the game number is useful when comparing your installation with a title’s patch notes or when explaining an update problem to support.
Menu path for God of War Ragnarök
Santa Monica Studio documents the following route for God of War Ragnarök:
- Highlight God of War Ragnarök on the PS5 home screen.
- Press the controller’s Options button.
- Choose Information.
- Scroll down to Version number.
Santa Monica Studio describes this value as the game version currently installed on the console. The instructions are title-specific, however. The available support information does not establish that every PS5 game exposes the same field, label, or menu placement. If Version number is missing, check the game publisher’s support documentation or the game’s own information screens rather than assuming the installation is damaged.
What the number tells you
The number belongs to the selected game installation, not to every copy of that game and not to the console as a whole. It can therefore differ from a number shown in a forum post, a video, or patch notes written for another edition or platform. Read it from the PS5 after the update has finished if you need to report the exact build that is installed.
A successful download does not necessarily answer the same question as a successful installation. If you are using automatic download without automatic installation, the package may be on the console while the game remains on its earlier installed build until installation is completed. Check the version after installation, not merely after the download notification.

Choose between manual and automatic updating
PS5 supports deliberate, user-controlled checks and background updating in Rest Mode. The right choice depends on whether you want immediate installation or control over when downloads and installations occur.

Automatic updating is convenient when the console is regularly connected and you want patches ready without checking each title. Manual checking is preferable when storage, bandwidth, or installation timing matters. The two approaches are not mutually exclusive: you can leave automatic downloads enabled and still use Check for Update whenever you want a deliberate check.

What each automatic option means
Auto-Download gives the console permission to fetch an update. It does not, by itself, promise that the new build is installed immediately. Auto-Install in Rest Mode gives the console permission to perform installation in Rest Mode when the update has been downloaded and the system can complete the operation.
This distinction is important if you want the download to happen in the background but do not want an installation to interrupt a suspended game session. In that situation, enable Auto-Download and handle installation after resuming the game. If you prefer the least manual work, enable both options and let the PS5 complete eligible updates while it is in Rest Mode.
Enable automatic updates in Rest Mode
Rest Mode updating works only if the PS5 is allowed to connect to the internet while it is in Rest Mode. Configure that connection permission first, then select the update behaviors you want.
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Go to Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Automatic Updates.
- Enable Auto-Download and, if desired, Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
The setting controls game and app updates; it is not the menu for viewing the console’s system-software version. Keep the PS5 connected to the internet when you put it into Rest Mode if you want the console to check for and fetch updates while you are away.
PlayStation distinguishes downloading from installing when a game remains suspended. With Auto-Download enabled by itself, the update can be downloaded without installing it while the suspended game is still open. Installation can then be handled after you resume the game. Enabling automatic installation gives the console permission to complete that step in Rest Mode when the system can do so.
When automatic updating does not happen
- Confirm that the PS5 is actually entering Rest Mode rather than being fully powered off.
- Make sure the console is permitted to stay connected to the internet in Rest Mode.
- Check that Auto-Download is enabled; automatic installation cannot occur if the update was never downloaded.
- If a game is suspended, expect installation behavior to differ from a game that is closed.
- Return to the game tile and run Check for Update manually if you need an immediate answer instead of waiting for the next Rest Mode check.
If you want to know whether an automatic process completed, reopen the title and inspect its Information screen when that game provides a Version number field. A downloaded update and an installed update are different states, so verify the number only after installation has finished.

“Version” can refer to two unrelated things:

On the console-information screen, PlayStation says that the system-software version is displayed and that Up to date appears when the latest system software is installed. Updating system software and updating a game are separate tasks; completing one does not prove that the other is current.
For example, a PS5 can show Up to date for system software while a game still has a pending patch. Conversely, a game can be on its newest installed build while the console system software needs attention. Use the game tile for the first check and the Console Information screen for the second.
What to do when a game update fails
If the update does not start, stops partway through, or repeatedly reports an error, work through these checks in order. They move from low-risk network and restart actions to measures that remove and rebuild local data.

1. Test the internet connection
- Open Settings.
- Select Network.
- Choose Test Internet Connection.
Use the result to determine whether the PS5 is online before trying the game update again. A failed connection test points to network troubleshooting rather than a game-version problem. If the test succeeds, return to the affected title and run Check for Update again.

2. Restart the console
Restart the PS5, wait for it to return to the home screen, and run Check for Update again. This clears a temporary session state without removing the game or its saves. If the game was suspended, close or resume it as appropriate before attempting installation; PlayStation notes that suspension affects installation behavior.
3. Bring PS5 system software up to date
Check Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. If the console is not current, install the available system-software update and then retry the game update. The system-software status and the game’s version number remain separate even after both are current.
4. Reinstall the affected game
If the connection and console software are current but the same title still cannot update, PlayStation lists deleting and reinstalling the game as a troubleshooting option. Confirm that you understand what will be removed before deleting anything, and allow the complete installation to finish before checking for the patch again. Reinstalling is a later step because it takes more time and changes the local game installation; try the connection test and restart first.
5. Use Safe Mode to clear cache and rebuild the database
PlayStation also recommends Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option for persistent problems. Safe Mode changes how the console starts, so follow the on-screen warnings carefully and select only the troubleshooting option you intend to use. If the failure continues after these steps, escalate the case to PlayStation Support with the exact error message and the title affected.

Keep the problem separated into questions
When diagnosing an update, identify which stage failed: finding the update, downloading it, installing it, or launching the updated game. The manual menu answers whether an update is available. The game’s Information screen, when present, answers which build is installed. The Console Information screen answers whether PS5 system software is current. Keeping those checks separate prevents a system-software result from being mistaken for a game-version result.
Why the version number may not match an online article
Patch numbers are title-specific. A version shown in a forum post, patch note, or video may belong to a different platform, region, edition, or release state. The number on the PS5’s Information screen is the one installed on your console at that moment.
Menu labels can also change as the console software or a game’s interface changes. The documented Options > Information > Version number route is confirmed for God of War Ragnarök, but it should not be presented as a guaranteed universal path for every title. When a game does not show the field, use its publisher’s current help page or in-game information screen.
Do not infer that a missing field means the update failed. The support instructions for God of War Ragnarök establish where that title reports its number, but they do not establish identical wording for every PS5 game. Record the title and edition when asking the publisher for help, and describe the menus you can actually see.

A practical update routine
For a reliable maintenance routine, use this sequence:
- Close the game if you need the cleanest possible installation state, then highlight its tile.
- Run Options > Check for Update.
- Install any update offered by the console and wait for the process to complete.
- Reopen the game and, where the title exposes it, confirm the installed Version number through Options > Information.
- If no update appears but the game behaves as though it is out of date, test the internet connection, restart the PS5, and verify system software before reinstalling.
If you use Rest Mode, decide whether you want downloads only or downloads plus installation. Auto-Download alone is useful when a suspended game must remain open; installation can be handled after you resume it. If you enable Auto-Install, remember that the console still needs permission to connect to the internet in Rest Mode.
This routine separates three questions that are often mixed together: whether an update is available, whether it has been installed, and whether the PS5 itself is running current system software.

Does launching a game update it automatically?

Yes. PlayStation’s automatic-update settings allow Auto-Download to be enabled without automatic installation. This is particularly relevant when a game remains suspended; installation can be handled after you resume the game.
Do I have to leave the PS5 in Rest Mode?
Rest Mode is the mode in which the PS5 can perform configured background downloads or installations. The console must also be allowed to connect to the internet during Rest Mode. If it is fully powered off, those Rest Mode update settings cannot perform their background work.
Is a USB drive required to update a PS5 game?

Automatic settings distinguish Auto-Download from Auto-Install. If only Auto-Download is enabled, installation may still be pending, especially when the game is suspended. After installation, check the title’s Version number field when the game provides one.

What if the game says it is up to date but an online post lists a newer number?
Compare like with like. Online posts can refer to another platform, edition, region, or release state. Use the number shown on your PS5’s Information screen, when available, and consult the publisher if the title’s menu does not expose a version field.
Does updating PS5 system software update my games?
No. System software and game software are separate. Check the game tile for Check for Update and the game’s Information screen for its installed build. Check Console Information under the System Software settings for the PS5’s own status.
What should I give support if the update still fails?
