To update a DualSense on PS5, connect it by USB, accept the on-screen controller-software prompt, or open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. If the controller will not connect, turn off the PS5, hold the recessed reset button on the controller’s back for at least five seconds, reconnect it by USB, and press PS. If that fails, update PS5 system software and use PlayStation Repairs.
This guide separates controller device software from PS5 system software, shows the exact pairing steps for PS5, PC and supported Bluetooth devices, and explains what to do when a reset or cable connection does not solve the problem.
What a DualSense update is—and what it is not
A DualSense controller has its own device software. On a PS5, that software is delivered alongside PS5 system-software updates and can also be checked from the controller settings. Updating the controller is therefore different from updating the console itself, although keeping both current is part of the official troubleshooting sequence.
The PS5 is the primary update route. A PC provides an alternative through Sony’s PlayStation Accessories application. A phone, tablet, Mac, Apple TV or other Bluetooth host can pair with the controller, but those devices are not presented as general-purpose controller-update hosts in the support instructions.

- PS5: pair by USB, follow the prompt, or use the manual controller-software menu.
- PC: use the official PlayStation Accessories application.
- Other devices: use Bluetooth pairing when the operating system meets the listed minimum version; feature availability varies by device and game.
There is no separate competing update menu on PS5. The automatic prompt and the manual controller-software page are two ways to reach the same official process. A Bluetooth pairing screen is for connecting the controller, not for replacing the PS5 or PlayStation Accessories update route.
Update the DualSense on a PS5 console
Use the automatic on-screen prompt
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the DualSense to the console with a USB cable.
- Press the controller’s PS button if the console does not identify it immediately.
- When the update prompt appears, follow the on-screen instructions until the process finishes.
PlayStation adds DualSense device-software updates when PS5 system software is updated. If the prompt appears after a system update, allow the controller update to complete before disconnecting the cable. Once the controller has sufficient battery charge, it can be disconnected for wireless play.
Keep the cable connected while the update is being offered and installed. A controller that has only been placed on charge is not necessarily communicating with the console; the wired link is what lets the PS5 identify and pair it. When the update finishes, you can check the controller wirelessly, but reconnect USB if you need to repeat the update or pairing process.
Check manually when no prompt appears
You can open the controller-software screen directly instead of waiting for a notification:
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Choose Controller (General).
- Select DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
- Follow any update instruction shown on that screen.
If the menu does not offer an update, the console may already have the current controller software, or the controller may not be paired correctly. Reconnect it by USB and press PS, then check the menu again. This sequence keeps the console and controller in the connection state required by the official instructions.
The exact menu wording matters: the controller update is under Controller (General), not in the ordinary game or Bluetooth-device list. If more than one DualSense is being used, select or connect the controller you intend to update before checking the page.
Keep the console update separate
The controller menu updates the controller; it does not replace the PS5 system-software update process. If the controller continues to behave incorrectly and you can operate the PS5, install any available PS5 system-software update before escalating the problem. PlayStation specifically recommends this step after a reset when connection trouble remains.
Recommended Free Tools
Updating the console is especially relevant when the controller was recently reset or when it connects briefly but will not stay connected. After the console update, repeat the wired connection: connect the controller, press PS, and check the controller-software page again.

Update a DualSense from a Windows PC
PlayStation supports updating DualSense controller software on a PC with the PlayStation Accessories application. Use Sony’s official download instructions for that application rather than an unofficial mirror. The app is an alternative update route when a PS5 is unavailable or when you need to update the controller before using it with another supported device.
- Install PlayStation Accessories using PlayStation’s official instructions.
- Connect the DualSense to the computer with a compatible USB data cable.
- Open the application and follow its on-screen controller-update instructions.
- Leave the controller connected until the application reports completion.
The support material does not establish a universal connector type or compatibility list for third-party cables. If the supplied cable is missing or damaged, select a replacement that explicitly supports data transfer and verify that it is compatible with the controller and computer before buying. A charge-only cable can prevent the computer from communicating with the controller.
Do not download a firmware utility from a mirror that is not PlayStation’s official source. The documented PC method is the PlayStation Accessories application; a generic Bluetooth utility or game launcher is not a substitute for it. If the application cannot see the controller, check the wired data connection first, then retry after reconnecting the controller.

First pairing, or pairing after a reset
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the DualSense to the console with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
- Wait for the console to recognize the controller and complete pairing.
- After the controller has enough battery life, disconnect the cable for wireless use.
USB is the official first-pairing and post-reset method for PS5. If a controller was previously paired with another console, repeat this USB process on the PS5 you want to use.
If the PS5 does not react when you press PS, leave the controller connected and try the button again after checking the cable connection. The recovery sequence is still USB first, rather than immediately attempting Bluetooth pairing. Once the player indicator shows that the controller has joined the console, wireless play can be tested by removing the cable.
Moving one controller between PS5 consoles
A DualSense can be paired with only one PS5 console at a time. Pairing it with a different PS5 requires pairing it with that console again. This is normal behavior, not evidence that the controller firmware is damaged. Connect it to the second console by USB, press PS, and let that console establish the new pairing.
Moving back to the first console requires the same process again. The one-console rule explains why a controller that worked yesterday on another PS5 may appear not to connect today: it needs a new wired pairing with the console currently in use.

- Make sure the controller’s player indicator is off.
- Disconnect any USB cable from the controller.
- Press and hold the Create button and the PS button together until the light bar begins blinking.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the target device.
- Select the controller from the list of available Bluetooth devices.
If the controller is still connected by USB, it will not enter the first-time Bluetooth pairing state described above. Start with the cable disconnected and the player indicator off. When pairing succeeds, the controller’s available functions are determined by the operating system, the connection type and the software using it.
Bluetooth pairing mode is different from ordinary PS5 pairing. The Create-plus-PS button combination makes the controller discoverable; pressing PS by itself is the normal way to reconnect it to a PS5 that has already been paired. If the target device does not show the controller, stop and repeat the combination until the light bar blinks, then refresh the device’s Bluetooth list.
Supported operating-system minimums
PlayStation’s controller-support page lists these minimum operating-system versions for Bluetooth use. Meeting a minimum does not guarantee that every DualSense feature will be available.
| Device category | Minimum version listed by PlayStation | Connection and feature qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Windows 10 (64-bit) | Bluetooth pairing is supported; some features may require USB. |
| Windows PC | Windows 11 | Bluetooth pairing is supported; some features may require USB. |
| Mac | macOS Big Sur 11.3 | Bluetooth pairing is supported; feature availability depends on the software. |
| iPhone | iOS 14.5 | Bluetooth pairing is supported; feature availability depends on the app and operating system. |
| iPad | iPadOS 14.5 | Bluetooth pairing is supported; feature availability depends on the app and operating system. |
| Apple TV | tvOS 14.5 | Bluetooth pairing is supported; feature availability depends on the app and operating system. |
| Android device | Android 12 | Bluetooth pairing is supported; feature availability depends on the device and app. |
On PC, PlayStation notes that haptics may require a USB connection when the game supports haptics. Therefore, a controller can pair successfully over Bluetooth while still lacking a feature that works when connected by USB.
These are minimum versions, not a promise that every model, application or game exposes every DualSense function. A successful Bluetooth connection proves only that the basic link works. If a feature is missing, compare the host’s operating-system version, the game’s controller support and the connection type before treating it as a controller fault.
Work through connection problems in the right order
Use the following order so that a simple pairing issue is not mistaken for a hardware failure. The reset step is deliberately later than the normal USB pairing step because resetting clears the controller’s current connection state.
1. Re-establish the official USB connection
With the PS5 on, connect the controller by USB and press PS. This is the standard recovery path after the controller has been used with another PS5, after a failed wireless session, or after the controller has been reset. If the controller is recognized, leave it connected long enough to check the controller-software menu and install any offered update.

2. Confirm the cable is suitable for communication
The official process uses a USB connection, not merely wireless charging. If the cable is damaged, missing or unable to carry data, replace it with a compatible USB data cable. Because PlayStation’s support instructions do not specify a connector type or certify particular third-party models, verify both the connector and data capability for your controller and host before purchasing.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
There is no fixed price or universally certified replacement specified by PlayStation. The practical requirement is compatibility and data support, not a particular brand. A cable that powers the controller but never lets the PS5 or PC detect it is not sufficient for pairing or software updates.
3. Reset the controller
Use the recessed reset button when USB pairing does not restore the connection:
- Turn off the PS5.
- Disconnect the controller from USB.
- Locate the recessed reset button on the back of the DualSense.
- Use a pin or another similar small tool to press and hold the button for at least five seconds.
- After releasing the button, connect the controller to the PS5 with its USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
The five-second hold is the interval specified in PlayStation’s troubleshooting instructions. A quick tap is not the same reset procedure. The reset does not substitute for pairing: after resetting, the controller must still be connected by USB and paired with the PS5.
A pin or similar household tool is all that is required to press the recessed button; do not force a large object into the opening. The important sequence is console off, USB disconnected, button held for at least five seconds, then USB reconnection and PS-button pairing.
4. Update PS5 system software
If the PS5 can be operated but the controller still will not stay connected after the reset, update the PS5 system software. Controller device software is distributed alongside PS5 system updates, so an out-of-date console can leave the controller and console on different software states. Follow the console’s own system-update instructions and then repeat the USB pairing check.
5. Stop repeating the same reset and escalate
If the controller still cannot connect after the reset, USB re-pairing and the available PS5 system-software update, use PlayStation Repairs. That is PlayStation’s official route for unresolved DualSense problems. Repeating resets will not provide a different diagnostic result once the prescribed sequence has been completed.
Choose the connection method that matches the job
| Goal | Best method | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Update controller software on PS5 | USB connection, then the on-screen prompt or the controller-software menu | Requires a working PS5 pairing. |
| Update controller software without a PS5 | PlayStation Accessories on a PC | Requires the official application and a USB data connection. |
| Pair with a PS5 for the first time | USB connection and PS button | One DualSense pairs with one PS5 at a time. |
| Move the controller to another PS5 | USB pairing on the other console | Pairing must be repeated for the new console. |
| Pair with a phone, tablet, Mac, Apple TV or supported PC | Bluetooth pairing mode | Minimum OS versions and feature support vary. |
| Use haptics on a supported PC game | USB, when the game supports the feature | Bluetooth pairing alone may not provide haptics. |
What to check when Bluetooth pairing appears to fail
- The controller is not listed: disconnect USB, make sure the player indicator is off, and hold Create plus PS until the light bar blinks.
- The device is below the listed operating-system minimum: update the host device if its manufacturer supports that update, or use a supported host instead.
- Pairing succeeds but a feature is missing: treat this as a device or game limitation first. On PC, test a USB connection when haptics are supported by the game.
- The controller was recently used with a PS5: Bluetooth pairing to another host may require entering pairing mode again; the PS5’s one-console pairing rule does not make the controller permanently exclusive to that console.
If the controller appears under an old or duplicate Bluetooth name, remove that entry using the host device’s normal Bluetooth controls and enter pairing mode again. The documented controller steps remain the same: cable disconnected, player indicator off, then Create and PS held until the light bar blinks.

A replacement is reasonable when the original USB cable is missing, visibly damaged or unable to establish the wired connection required for pairing and updates. Buy only after checking the controller’s connector and the host device’s port, and choose a cable advertised for data as well as charging. The official support instructions establish the USB pairing requirement but do not certify a particular third-party cable or specify a universal connector type.

Do not treat a new cable as a firmware fix. It only restores the communication path needed to pair, update or reset the controller. If a known-compatible data cable still produces the same failure after the five-second reset and PS5 system-software update, proceed to PlayStation Repairs.
Shortest reliable recovery sequence
- Turn on the PS5 and connect the DualSense by USB.
- Press PS and check Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
- If the controller will not connect, turn off the PS5 and hold the rear reset button for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect by USB and press PS.
- If the PS5 remains operable and the problem continues, update PS5 system software.
- Use PlayStation Repairs when those steps do not restore the connection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I update a DualSense without a PS5?
Yes. PlayStation supports the PlayStation Accessories application on a PC as an alternative update route. Connect the controller with a compatible USB data cable and follow the application’s instructions. A Bluetooth connection alone is not the documented PC update method.
Why does my DualSense charge but not connect to the PS5?
Charging does not prove that the cable carries data. Try a compatible USB data cable, connect it to the PS5, and press PS. If it still is not detected, turn off the console, hold the rear reset button for at least five seconds, reconnect by USB and press PS again.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do I need to reset the controller before every update?
No. Reset only when normal USB pairing does not restore the connection. For an ordinary update, connect the controller, press PS, then use the on-screen prompt or the controller-software menu.
Why will my DualSense not connect to a second PS5?
A DualSense can pair with only one PS5 console at a time. Connect it by USB to the second PS5 and press PS to establish the new pairing. Returning to the first console requires repeating that process there.
Can I use DualSense haptics over Bluetooth on PC?
Possibly, but PlayStation notes that haptics on PC may require USB when the game supports them. Bluetooth pairing can work while a particular feature remains unavailable over that connection.
Which operating systems support DualSense Bluetooth pairing?
PlayStation lists Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, macOS Big Sur 11.3, iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, tvOS 14.5 and Android 12 as minimum versions. Feature support still depends on the device, game and connection type.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I do if the five-second reset does not work?
After the reset, reconnect the controller to the PS5 by USB and press PS. If the PS5 can be operated, update its system software and retry. If the controller still will not connect, use PlayStation Repairs.
Do I need to buy a specific replacement cable?
PlayStation does not certify a universal third-party model in these instructions. Check the connector and host port, and choose a cable explicitly advertised for data as well as charging. Confirm compatibility before buying.
The Bottom Line
For PS5, the dependable path is USB pairing, the on-screen prompt or Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. For a PC, use the official PlayStation Accessories application. For other supported devices, disconnect USB and hold Create plus PS until the light bar blinks, remembering that features such as haptics may require USB. If connection trouble persists, perform the rear-button reset for at least five seconds, re-pair by USB, update PS5 system software and then contact PlayStation Repairs.
