To update a PULSE Elite on PS5, connect the headset with its PlayStation Link USB adapter, then open Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update. The console checks the headset and adapter and presents any available update.
On a Windows PC, install Sony’s PlayStation Link PC Driver. The driver can update both the PULSE Elite headset and its USB adapter without a PS5. Sony’s documented instructions cover Windows and PS5; they do not establish a Mac update procedure.
This guide explains what is updated, which connections and cables you need, how the PS5 and Windows methods differ, and what to try when the update controls do not appear.

A PULSE Elite setup has two PlayStation Link devices: the wireless headset and the included PlayStation Link USB adapter. Either device may have device software available, so check both rather than assuming that updating one updates the other. Sony uses “device software” for these updates and also describes the same software as firmware.

The adapter is paired with the headset out of the box. For a PS5 update, you need the console, the headset and the included adapter when the console is using PlayStation Link. For a Windows update, you need the adapter, an available USB port and a USB cable for the update portion. Keep the headset close to the console or computer and make sure it has enough charge to remain on while the process runs.
The update process is for an existing PULSE Elite. You do not need to buy another headset to perform it, and the included adapter is the component Sony uses to expose the PlayStation Link devices to the PS5 or Windows driver. If you received a used headset without its adapter, the documented workflows may not be available to you because both routes rely on that adapter.
Sony does not publish one fixed “latest” version on the update instructions. The version shown for your headset and adapter is the authoritative result for your hardware and region, so use the version check in the console or driver instead of comparing your number with a generic number from a forum.
Firmware and device software mean the same thing in Sony’s PlayStation Link documentation. Thus, a prompt for “device software” is the update you are looking for even if another support page or troubleshooting article calls it a firmware update.
Choose the documented update route
| Route | What you use | Does it need a PS5? | What Sony documents |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Built-in PS Link device-software menu | Yes | Update the wireless headset and USB adapter from the Accessories settings. |
| Windows PC | PlayStation Link PC Driver | No | Update the PULSE Elite and adapter through the driver’s notification quick menu. |
| Mac | No documented method in the reviewed instructions | Not established | Use the PS5 route if you can access a PS5; do not assume the Windows driver works on macOS. |
If you own a PS5, its built-in route is the shortest path because no separate application is required. A Windows PC is useful when you do not have a PS5 or prefer to perform the update at a desk. The Mac limitation is important: Sony’s reviewed support material lists Windows requirements and a PS5 procedure, but does not provide a Mac driver or Mac update sequence.
The two documented routes are not interchangeable in their requirements. The PS5 method uses a menu already built into the console. The Windows method depends on the PlayStation Link PC Driver, Windows recognizing the adapter, and a USB cable when the driver begins the device-update flow. Choose the route you can complete without interrupting the connection.
Update the PULSE Elite on a PS5
1. Prepare the connection
- Turn on the PS5.
- Insert the included PlayStation Link USB adapter if it is not already connected.
- Use the headset with that adapter. The adapter is paired with the PULSE Elite from the factory, so a normal first-time setup should not require manual pairing.
If the headset is currently connected in another way, return to the PlayStation Link connection before checking device software. The update menu is for PS Link devices, not a generic audio-device update screen.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the adapter that came with the headset for this procedure. The update screen is concerned with the PlayStation Link headset and adapter as a pair, so a different wireless receiver or a cable-only audio connection does not substitute for the included PS Link adapter in the documented steps.

2. Open the PS Link update screen
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Select Headset.
- Select PS Link Device Software Update.
This exact path is the console’s built-in update location for the headset and adapter. If you stop at the general headset settings, you may see audio controls but not the device-software check; continue to the specifically named PS Link menu.
3. Check both device versions
The screen reports the software version for the wireless headset and the USB adapter. Review each entry. If the console reports that a new update is available, follow the on-screen instructions until the process finishes. Do not treat a version number seen on another owner’s console as a universal current version; Sony’s instructions do not state one fixed version that applies to every PULSE Elite.
Keep the headset connected and powered during the update. Avoid shutting down the console, removing the adapter or disconnecting any cable while the on-screen process is still running. If the console reports that no update is available, the devices are current according to that PS5’s check.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBecause the headset and adapter are listed separately, record or note both displayed versions if you are troubleshooting. That makes it clear whether a later retry concerns the headset, the adapter or both, without relying on a single overall “headset updated” message.
4. Update the PS5 system software too
Sony advises keeping the PS5 system software current as well as the PS Link device software. These are separate update areas: updating the console does not replace the headset-and-adapter check, and checking the PS Link menu does not update the PS5 operating system.
In practical terms, finish any pending PS5 system update through the console’s normal system-software controls, then return to the PS Link Device Software Update menu. This gives you a current console environment and a separate confirmation for each PlayStation Link device.

Windows requirements
Sony’s PlayStation Link PC Driver page lists the following requirements:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Requirement | What Sony specifies |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11 |
| Free storage | At least 20 MB |
| Display | Resolution of 1280 × 800 or higher |
| Internet | Internet access for installation |
| USB connection | A compatible available USB port |
| Cable | A USB cable for updating devices |
The 20 MB figure is the driver’s listed storage requirement, not the size of the firmware package or a promise about download time. The requirements are for Windows; they do not establish support for macOS or Linux.

Internet access is listed for installation, so install the driver while the PC can reach the internet. The adapter also needs a compatible, available USB port. A USB cable is specifically required for the device-update portion; keep one ready before opening the update controls rather than waiting until the driver pauses for it.
1. Install the PlayStation Link PC Driver
- On the Windows PC, insert the PlayStation Link USB adapter into an available compatible USB port.
- Wait for Windows to install the driver. Sony says the driver installs automatically and Windows notifies you when installation is complete.
- Open the driver’s quick menu from the Windows notification.
The adapter is the device that starts the PlayStation Link driver workflow. If Windows does not show the installation notification, give it a moment, then use the recovery steps below before attempting the update.
Use the notification quick menu rather than searching Windows for a generic headset firmware utility. Sony’s documented controls are exposed by the PlayStation Link driver, and the adapter must be recognized before those controls can appear.

- From the driver’s notification quick menu, choose the update option presented for the connected PS Link devices.
- When the update flow asks for a cable, connect the PULSE Elite with a USB cable as directed.
- Follow every on-screen instruction until the driver reports completion.
Sony identifies the USB cable as necessary for device updates, but does not publish every screen or prompt in the flow. Therefore, follow the wording shown by your installed driver rather than relying on a fixed sequence copied from another computer.
The Windows driver supports firmware updates for the PULSE Elite headset and for the PlayStation Link USB adapter. Check that both devices have been processed if the driver presents separate entries. Updating only the adapter can leave the headset on older software, and the reverse can leave the adapter unchanged.
Do not unplug the adapter or cable merely because one device appears to finish first. Continue until the driver has completed the presented workflow for every listed PS Link device. When it reports that no newer device software is available, the Windows check is complete for the devices it recognized.
3. If the quick menu does not appear
Sony’s driver guidance gives this recovery sequence:
- Remove the PlayStation Link USB adapter from the PC.
- Insert it again into an available compatible USB port.
- Reboot the PC.
- After Windows starts, check for the driver’s notification and open its quick menu again.
Do not infer that an absent notification means the headset is already current. The notification is also how the driver exposes the update controls, so restore that connection first.

If you changed USB ports, wait for Windows to finish recognizing the adapter before opening another application. The documented recovery is deliberately simple: reseat the adapter, restart Windows and check for the notification again. If the menu still does not appear, the supported update controls have not yet been exposed by the driver.
What Mac owners can and cannot do
The reviewed Sony instructions do not document a PlayStation Link PC Driver for macOS, nor do they provide a Mac update procedure. Do not install a Windows driver through an unsupported workaround and assume that it can safely update the headset.
If you use a Mac but can access a PS5, use the PS5 route: connect the included adapter, then open Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update. If you have neither a PS5 nor a supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, the cited instructions do not establish another update method.
A Mac can still be the computer you normally use for games or work, but that does not create a documented Mac-based updater. The practical choice is to borrow or access a PS5, or use a Windows 10/11 computer that meets Sony’s listed requirements. Avoid treating third-party utilities, virtual machines or compatibility layers as Sony-supported procedures.
Common pitfalls to avoid
- Checking only one device: The headset and adapter are separate PS Link devices. Confirm both entries, not just the headset name.
- Looking for a universal firmware number: Sony’s update instructions do not give one fixed latest version. Use the number shown for your own hardware.
- Using the wrong menu: On PS5, the relevant location is the specifically named PS Link Device Software Update menu under Accessories and Headset.
- Starting Windows without a cable: Sony lists a USB cable for device updates even though the adapter begins the driver installation.
- Assuming a missing notification means “up to date”: On Windows, a missing quick menu is a connection or driver-visibility problem until the adapter is reinserted and the PC restarted.
- Assuming Mac support: The documented PC driver requirements are for Windows 10 and Windows 11, not macOS.
- Interrupting the process: Keep the headset powered and leave the adapter and any connected cable in place while the on-screen update is running.
If the update does not fix the problem
Confirm both PS Link devices are current
Sony’s troubleshooting guidance starts with the headset and the included USB adapter: make sure both have the latest device software. A headset can appear to update successfully while the adapter still needs its own update, so check the two entries on PS5 or the two device entries presented by the Windows driver.
Reset the headset
Sony’s support guidance includes a headset reset instruction: hold the headset’s PS Link button for at least 10 seconds, then press the button to turn the headset on again. That wording comes from a Spanish Sony support page, so the label or translation can differ on another regional site. Use the support page for your locale when the on-screen wording does not match.
A reset is a troubleshooting step, not a replacement for the software check. First establish that the headset and adapter are current; then use the reset if the symptom remains and the support instructions for your region call for it.
Retry the connection before retrying the update
On Windows, remove and reinsert the adapter and restart the PC if the driver’s quick menu is missing. On PS5, verify that the adapter is inserted and that the headset is connected through PlayStation Link before reopening the update menu. These checks address the documented failure point—the computer or console not exposing the PS Link update controls—rather than treating a connection problem as a firmware-version problem.

Know when the software check is complete
If the PS5 or Windows driver reports that no newer device software is available for both the headset and adapter, the documented update process has finished. Sony does not state that every audio, microphone or wireless symptom is caused by outdated software; an unchanged symptom after both devices are current may have another cause and should be handled through the appropriate PlayStation support troubleshooting for that symptom.
Practical checklist
- Identify whether you are using PS5 or Windows 10/11; the documented procedures are platform-specific.
- Keep the included PlayStation Link USB adapter available; it is part of both documented update routes.
- On PS5, use Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update.
- On Windows, install the PlayStation Link PC Driver and open its notification quick menu.
- Have a compatible USB port and USB cable ready for the Windows update flow.
- Check the headset and adapter separately.
- Do not rely on a generic “latest firmware” number; read the version shown for your devices.
- If the Windows menu is absent, remove and reinsert the adapter, reboot, and check again.
- If a current-software check does not resolve the issue, perform the documented 10-second PS Link-button reset and consult the support page for your region.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I update a PULSE Elite without a PS5?
