To update a Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server safely, stop it, make a complete copy of its server folder, download the current Windows or Linux package from the official Bedrock server page, extract that package into a separate empty folder, and copy the new program files over the old installation. Do not replace the worlds directory or server.properties; retain permissions.json and allowlist.json. Start the server again and verify that the world, players and settings load. Docker containers and hosting panels use different update workflows.
How to update minecraft bedrock server: the safe order
A Bedrock server update replaces the executable and supporting files while preserving the data that makes your server unique. The safest sequence is:

- Copy the entire server directory to a dated backup location.
- Check the current build on the official download page.
- Download the Windows or Linux archive that matches your operating system.
- Extract the archive into a new, empty directory.
- Copy the new program files into the existing installation, leaving the world and configuration files in place.
- Restore or verify file ownership and execute permissions on Linux.
- Start the server and inspect the console for the expected version and world.
- Connect with a client on the same or a compatible Bedrock version before reopening the server to everyone.
Never perform the file replacement while bedrock_server is still running. The process can have region files open, so copying over it can leave an incomplete update or a damaged save.
Before you update: identify the installation and make a real backup
Find the server folder
The installation folder contains the Bedrock executable and files such as server.properties, permissions.json, allowlist.json and a worlds directory. On Windows the executable is normally bedrock_server.exe; on Linux it is normally bedrock_server. If you use Docker or a game-hosting panel, the files may be inside a mounted data directory rather than the folder you see in a normal file manager.

Do not assume that the folder where you launch a shortcut is the data location. Check the shortcut, service unit, container volume or panel file manager so the backup includes the actual world data.
Stop the server cleanly
Use the server console or your service manager to stop the process, then wait until it reports that it has shut down. If you cannot access the console, stop the service or container through the same tool that starts it. A forced kill should be a last resort because it can interrupt a save.

Copy the whole directory, not only the world folder. Include every world under worlds, server.properties, permissions.json, allowlist.json, the executable, and any scripts or service files you use to launch the server. Put the copy on a different disk or storage location when possible and give it a name such as bedrock-backup-2026-10-14.
- Open the backup and confirm that the expected world directory is present.
- Check that the backup is not an empty shortcut or a link to the live directory.
- Keep the backup untouched until the new build has been tested by players.
This copy is the recovery path if the new build cannot read the world or if files are accidentally overwritten. A world-only backup is not enough to restore all server settings and access controls.
Download the correct Bedrock Dedicated Server build
Use the official Bedrock server download page at minecraft.net/en-us/download/server/bedrock. Select the archive for Windows or Linux; do not use a Java Edition server package. The download page is the authority for the current build number and its supported platform, so check it immediately before updating rather than relying on a version number in an old guide.
The Bedrock server build is intended to track the corresponding Bedrock client release. If your players are on a newer client than the server, they may receive a version-mismatch message; if the server is newer than a player’s client, that player may need to update the game before joining. The current build number was not established here, so read the number shown on the official page instead of treating an example from an older article as current.

Stable versus preview builds
Mojang publishes preview builds alongside stable releases. A preview is appropriate for testing, not for replacing a production instance that your players depend on. Create a second server directory, use a copy of the world, and point the preview process at that copy. Do not let a preview build open your only production copy of the world: a format change can make it unsuitable for an older build.
Verify the archive before extracting
- Confirm that the operating-system package matches the machine where it will run.
- Download from the official domain and retain the original archive until the update is verified.
- Compare the archive’s displayed build with the build your clients are expected to use.
- Extract to an empty temporary directory; extracting over the live directory makes it easier to overwrite files that must be preserved.
Update the Windows server
1. Stop and back up
Close the server console only after the server has finished shutting down. Copy the complete Windows server directory to your backup location before changing anything.

2. Extract the new package separately
Create a temporary directory such as C:Minecraftbedrock-new. Extract the downloaded ZIP there. The extracted directory should contain bedrock_server.exe and the files shipped with that build. Do not extract directly into the live folder.
3. Copy only the new server files
With the old server still stopped, copy the extracted files into the live directory. When Windows asks whether to replace an existing file, preserve the live copies of:

worlds, including every world directory inside it;server.properties, which contains the server’s gameplay and network settings;permissions.json, which controls operator permissions;allowlist.json, if the allowlist is enabled.
Replace the executable and the other files supplied by the new archive. If the archive contains a file with a name you customized locally, compare it before replacing it; keep a copy of the old file so you can restore a setting that the new package does not include.
4. Start and check the result
Open a command prompt in the live directory and run:
bedrock_server.exeAlternatively, start it through the shortcut, scheduled task or service you normally use. Watch the console for the server’s reported build, a successful world load and the listening status. Join from a test account, confirm that the expected world is selected, and check that operator and allowlist behavior still works.
Update minecraft bedrock dedicated server linux
1. Stop the process and preserve ownership information
Stop the server through its service, screen/tmux session or management script. Record which Linux user owns the installation and how the process is started. The new files must be readable by that user, and the executable must retain an execute bit.
2. Back up the complete directory
From the parent directory, make a recursive copy or archive of the live installation. A typical archive command is:
tar -czf bedrock-backup-2026-10-14.tar.gz bedrock-server/Replace bedrock-server/ with your actual directory. Check that the resulting archive contains the worlds directory and the JSON and properties files before proceeding.

3. Extract into an empty directory
Create a staging directory and unpack the downloaded Linux archive there. Keeping staging and production separate prevents a partially extracted archive from becoming the live server.
mkdir bedrock-new
unzip bedrock-server-*.zip -d bedrock-newThe exact archive filename can differ by release. Use the filename you downloaded rather than assuming that pattern if your shell expands it to more than one file.

4. Copy the release while excluding persistent data
From the staging directory, copy the new executable and shipped support files into the live directory, but do not replace worlds, server.properties, permissions.json or allowlist.json. One cautious approach is to copy named files from the extracted package rather than synchronizing the entire directory. If you use a synchronization tool, explicitly exclude those paths and review its dry-run output first.
5. Restore permissions and launch
Ensure the executable can run as the service user:
chmod +x bedrock_server
./bedrock_serverIf the server is managed by systemd, start it with your existing unit instead of launching a second copy manually. For example, use the service name configured on your machine:
sudo systemctl start minecraft-bedrockminecraft-bedrock is only an example service name; inspect your unit file and use its actual name. If the service starts but cannot read the world, check ownership and permissions on the entire installation, especially the worlds tree.
Which files should be replaced?

The exact contents of these files can change between releases. Do not copy a file from an unrelated version merely because its name matches; compare a new default with your preserved configuration and merge only settings you intentionally need.
Bedrock_server update without losing world data
The world is preserved when the existing world directory remains in place and the new server process points to the same installation. The world folder name must stay identical. If you rename it, move it to a different level, or change the world setting in server.properties, the server can create a new world or appear to have lost the old one.
Confirm the selected world after the update
- Compare the directory names under
worldswith the world name configured inserver.properties. - Check the startup log for the world that is being loaded.
- Join and verify recognizable builds, inventories and player locations before allowing normal play.
- Do not delete the old directory if the first launch shows a new, empty world.
If the server starts with a fresh world, stop it, restore the original configuration and world directory from the backup or correct the path/name mismatch. Continuing to play in the wrong world can make it harder to distinguish an update problem from a simple configuration error.

Minecraft bedrock server update world not loading
A world that fails to load after an update is commonly associated with a level-format mismatch between the old and new builds, an interrupted save, incorrect file ownership, or a changed world path. Treat the original backup as more valuable than repeated experiments on the only copy.
Use this recovery order
- Stop the server and preserve the failed installation as a separate copy for diagnosis.
- Read the console output and note whether the error names a format, permission, missing-file or path problem.
- Check that the world directory name and
server.propertiesselection are unchanged. - On Linux, verify that the service user can read and write every file under
worlds. - Restore the pre-update backup to a separate test directory and start it with the previous server build, if that build is still available.
- Test the newer build against a duplicate of that restored world, not the only original.
- If the new build still cannot open the copy, update in smaller steps or wait for a compatible release rather than repeatedly opening the production world.
Gradual updates and testing on a copy are the practical safeguards when a format change is suspected. A preview build should be isolated for the same reason. No general failure-rate statistic establishes how often this happens, so the backup and test-copy procedure is more reliable than assuming an update will be reversible.

Server-side checks
- The startup console shows the intended build and reaches its normal listening or ready state.
- The expected world loads without a conversion or corruption error.
- The server reads the existing
server.propertiesvalues rather than silently using defaults. - Operator permissions and the allowlist behave as before.
- On Linux, the process runs under the intended user and can write new save data.
Client-side checks
- Connect from a client on the matching Bedrock release.
- Visit several areas, open containers and confirm that player inventories and recent changes are present.
- Test any add-ons, scripts or resource packs that are important to your server.
- Ask another player to join so you test authentication and allowlist behavior, not only a local administrator connection.
Keep the backup until these checks pass and at least one normal save has completed. Then make a new backup of the now-updated installation before the next maintenance window.
Docker Bedrock servers: update the image, not a ZIP folder
A containerized server has a different lifecycle. The community image itzg/minecraft-bedrock-server publishes tags such as latest; updating normally means pulling the desired image tag and recreating the container while retaining the host directory or volume mounted for the world.
Safe container workflow
- Use the container’s console or management command to stop the Bedrock process cleanly.
- Back up the host bind mount or named volume that contains
worldsand configuration files. - Record the current image tag, environment variables, port mappings and volume mounts.
- Pull the new image tag through your normal container tool.
- Recreate the container with the same persistent volume, environment and network settings.
- Watch the new container’s logs and verify the world before removing the old container or image.
Do not delete a volume as part of routine image cleanup. The container is replaceable; the mounted world data is the part that must survive. Pinning a specific tag gives more predictable rollbacks than automatically tracking latest, while using latest reduces the work needed to follow new releases. Whichever policy you choose, keep a dated backup outside the volume.
Panel-hosted servers: use the panel’s version tool
Game-hosting control panels often provide a version selector, installer or reinstall action. That tool may download the package, stop the server and preserve the world automatically, but the exact behavior depends on the host. Read the panel’s warning screen and back up the files before confirming a reinstall.
What to check in a panel
- Confirm that the selected product is Bedrock Dedicated Server, not a Java server.
- Check whether the operation preserves or replaces
server.properties, permissions and allowlist files. - Download a panel backup or copy the world through its file manager before changing versions.
- Record the existing version, startup command and selected world name.
- After installation, inspect the console and connect with a matching client.
If a panel reports that world data is retained, still keep an independent backup. A provider’s reinstall workflow can preserve the intended data while a mis-selected directory, failed job or later cleanup removes it.
Manual copy, Docker or panel: which update method fits?

Choose the method that matches your existing deployment. Do not mix a panel’s installer with manual file replacement unless you know which directory the panel manages; two launch methods can point at different worlds or start two server processes.

Common mistakes and their fixes
Overwriting the worlds folder
Restore the folder from the dated backup, keep its original name and start the server with the correct configuration. Do not continue playing in a newly generated replacement world.
Copying files while the server is running
Stop the process, restore the pre-copy backup if necessary, and repeat the update with a clean shutdown. A file copy cannot be made reliable by simply restarting afterward.
Using the wrong operating-system package
Delete the staged files, download the package for the actual operating system, and repeat the extraction. Windows and Linux executables are not interchangeable.
Linux reports permission denied
Check ownership, read/write access to the installation and execute permission on bedrock_server. Start it as the same user that owns the world files, or adjust the service configuration deliberately rather than running the server as an unrelated account.
Players cannot connect after the update
Confirm that the server is listening on the expected address and port, that the process is the one you updated, and that clients have the matching Bedrock release. A connection problem is not evidence that the world was lost.
The server loads a different world
Stop it immediately, inspect server.properties and the names under worlds, and restore the original path or name. Preserve both the unexpected new world and the original backup until you have confirmed which one is correct.

- Keep at least one backup from before every update and one from after a successful update.
- Use a separate test instance for preview builds and major release changes.
- Document the operating system, launch command, service name, container tag or panel procedure.
- Keep custom configuration changes in a separate record so you can compare them with new defaults.
- Schedule updates when players can tolerate downtime and leave time for a rollback.
- Do not remove the previous build or its backup until the updated server has loaded, saved and accepted a test connection.
A historical example illustrates why dates matter: Bedrock Dedicated Server 1.11.0.23 was released on April 23, 2019 to match Bedrock Edition 1.11.0. That old build is useful only as version-history context; it is not a current download recommendation. Always use the build displayed on the official page for the release you are deploying.
