To unstake stETH through Lido, submit a withdrawal request, wait for the request to be finalized, then claim the reserved ETH. The process is asynchronous: your stETH is locked and represented by an unstETH ERC-721 NFT while the request moves through Lido’s FIFO queue. You do not receive ETH at the moment you submit the request, and the final ETH amount is determined only when Lido finalizes it.
What “unstaking” stETH on Lido actually does
Lido’s native withdrawal process has three distinct stages. Treating it as a single swap is the most common source of mistakes.

The unstETH NFT is the claim ticket. Whoever controls the request NFT controls the right to claim the reserved ETH, so do not transfer, sell, or send it to an address you do not control unless you intentionally want to transfer that claim.

What you need before submitting a request
- An Ethereum wallet that can connect to Lido’s withdrawal interface or sign transactions to the WithdrawalQueueERC721 contract.
- stETH, or wstETH if you use Lido’s dedicated wstETH request method.
- Enough ETH in the wallet to pay Ethereum transaction fees for approval, the request, and the later claim. The exact fee varies with network conditions.
- A destination address check. By default, the request owner receives the claim, but the claim transaction can specify a recipient where supported.
- A plan for keeping the unstETH NFT secure until the request is claimable.
Check the amount before signing. Lido documents a minimum request size of 100 wei and a maximum of 1000 stETH per request. A request above 1000 stETH must be divided into multiple requests, each producing its own NFT and requiring its own queue record.

Step-by-step: withdraw stETH in Lido’s interface
1. Connect the correct wallet
Open Lido’s official withdrawal interface and connect the wallet that holds the stETH. Confirm that the wallet address and Ethereum network shown by the wallet match the account you intend to keep as the unstETH NFT owner. Never approve a transaction from a different account merely because it displays the same token balance.
2. Enter the amount and review the request
Choose stETH withdrawal, enter an amount within the documented limits, and inspect the interface’s displayed estimate. The estimate is informational: the final redemption rate is set at finalization, not when you type the amount or submit the transaction.
If your balance is wstETH, select the wstETH path offered by the interface. Lido’s integration documentation provides a dedicated request method for wstETH; do not assume that a generic stETH request call accepts wstETH.
3. Approve the token, or use a supported permit
The queue must be allowed to take the tokens. You can normally approve the required amount in a separate ERC-20 transaction. If the interface and your wallet support a permit flow, that signature can authorize the transfer without a separate traditional approval transaction. Read the spender and amount in the wallet prompt before signing, and avoid unlimited approvals when a precise amount is available.
4. Submit the withdrawal request
Confirm the request transaction. Lido locks the stETH in the withdrawal queue and mints an unstETH ERC-721 NFT that identifies the request. Save the transaction hash, request ID, token ID if displayed, and the wallet address that owns the NFT. These details let you track the request and recover from a lost browser session.

5. Wait for finalization
Your request joins a first-in, first-out queue. Lido’s accounting oracle finalizes batches when the request is eligible, the applicable timelock has passed, and sufficient ETH is available. The request may remain pending even though the submission transaction succeeded; pending means it has not yet reached the claimable state, not that the tokens disappeared.
6. Check status instead of guessing a date
Use Lido’s withdrawal status functions or the Withdrawals API with the request ID. These tools can provide an estimate for a new amount and the current state of an existing request. Estimates change with queue size, oracle processing, available ETH, and other protocol conditions, so they are not guaranteed completion times.

When the request is finalized and marked claimable, submit the claim transaction from the address controlling the unstETH NFT, or use the specified recipient flow if you deliberately assigned another recipient. The claim transfers the reserved ETH and burns the unstETH NFT. Verify the recipient address and keep enough ETH available for the claim transaction’s gas.
Submitting directly to the WithdrawalQueueERC721 contract
Advanced users and integrators can call the WithdrawalQueueERC721 contract instead of using the web interface. The transaction sequence remains the same:
- Approve the queue to spend the required stETH, or provide a valid supported permit.
- Call the contract’s stETH withdrawal-request method with an amount between 100 wei and 1000 stETH for that request.
- For wstETH, call the dedicated wstETH request method rather than passing wstETH to the ordinary stETH method.
- Capture the emitted request identifier and the unstETH NFT ownership record.
- Read the request status through the contract’s status functions or Lido’s Withdrawals API.
- After finalization, call the claim method and check that the NFT is burned and ETH arrived at the intended recipient.
Use the deployed contract address and ABI from Lido’s current developer documentation or a trusted block explorer. A fabricated address, stale ABI, or wrong network can result in a failed transaction or an approval granted to an unintended contract. Contract calls also require you to handle gas estimation, nonce management, and event indexing yourself.

How long does a Lido withdrawal take?
There is no single guaranteed wait time. The queue is FIFO, and a request becomes claimable only after all relevant conditions are met:
- The request has reached its position in the queue.
- The protocol’s timelock has elapsed.
- The accounting oracle has included and finalized an eligible batch.
- Enough ETH is available for the batch being finalized.
These variables can change after submission. A status estimate is therefore useful for planning but should not be treated as a promise that ETH will be claimable on a particular day or at a particular hour.
For a new withdrawal, enter the amount in Lido’s status tooling to obtain a current estimate. For an existing withdrawal, query the request ID rather than submitting a duplicate request. A second request creates a separate NFT and does not accelerate the first one.
Will you receive exactly 1 ETH for 1 stETH?
Not necessarily. Lido determines the stETH-to-ETH redemption rate for each request at finalization. Lido’s accounting-oracle specification describes that rate as the inverse of the ETH:stETH staking rate at the time the request is finalized. The amount shown when you submit is not a binding payout quote.
In practical terms, the final calculation is based on the request amount multiplied by the redemption rate established for that finalized batch. A change in the rate between submission and finalization can therefore make the payout differ from the expectation you had when entering the request.

The specification notes that a severe protocol loss could produce less than a 1:1 stETH-to-ETH result, although Lido states that such an event had not occurred historically in the cited specification. This is a protocol-risk qualification, not a guarantee of a particular future rate.
Rewards stop for tokens in the queue
Once stETH enters the withdrawal queue, the withdrawing request does not continue earning rewards while it waits. Lido’s documentation summarizes the trade-off as: “To put it simply, token holders don’t receive rewards but still take risks during withdrawal.” Rewards that would otherwise accrue to the queued amount are effectively distributed to the holders who remain in the staking system.
Request limits and splitting a large withdrawal
The documented per-request range is 100 wei minimum to 1000 stETH maximum. The minimum is a protocol boundary, not a recommendation to submit a dust-sized request: every request creates transaction work and an NFT to track.
If you need to withdraw more than 1000 stETH, split the amount into multiple requests. For example, a 2400 stETH position must be represented by at least three requests, such as 1000 stETH, 1000 stETH, and 400 stETH. Each request has its own queue position, finalization record, claim transaction, and gas cost; they may not become claimable in exactly the same batch.

An exchange, decentralized swap aggregator, or other secondary market can provide a faster user experience because it trades your stETH for an available asset instead of placing it in Lido’s asynchronous withdrawal queue. That route is a market swap, not an unstaking request, so the execution risks and outcome differ.

Choose the queue when direct protocol redemption and native ETH are more important than immediate settlement. Choose a market swap only after checking the quoted price, liquidity, slippage, fees, and the risks of the particular venue. A swap does not preserve the withdrawal request’s finalization mechanics; it replaces them with market execution.
Common problems and how to resolve them
The request transaction failed
Check that the wallet is on Ethereum, the amount is within 100 wei to 1000 stETH, the allowance or permit covers the requested amount, and the wallet has enough ETH for gas. If a wstETH balance was entered through an stETH-only method, use the dedicated wstETH route. Do not repeatedly resubmit until you have identified whether the failure was approval, balance, network, or contract-method related.
The request is still pending
Pending status is normal before oracle finalization. Confirm the request ID on Lido’s status tooling, then review its queue position and current state. An estimate can move because oracle batches, the timelock, and ETH availability are dynamic. Submitting another request will not move the existing NFT forward.
The interface shows claimable, but claiming fails
Confirm that the wallet submitting the claim controls the unstETH NFT, that the request has not already been claimed, and that the recipient address is correct. Keep ETH for gas. If the NFT was transferred, the current NFT owner—not the original submitter—controls the claim unless the contract’s recipient rules specify otherwise.
The NFT is missing from the wallet display
Wallet interfaces do not always index every ERC-721 immediately. Use the transaction hash, request ID, token ID, and a trusted block explorer to verify ownership and status. Do not mint or submit another request merely because the wallet’s collectibles tab is delayed.
The final ETH amount is lower or higher than expected
The payout is established at finalization using the applicable redemption rate, not the rate you inferred at submission. Check the finalized request data and the amount reserved for the claim. A difference is not, by itself, evidence that the request failed.
Security checklist
- Reach the withdrawal interface through a trusted bookmark or Lido documentation, and inspect the domain before connecting.
- Compare the token, spender, amount, network, and recipient in every wallet prompt.
- Prefer an exact approval amount over an unlimited allowance when the interface permits that choice.
- Keep the unstETH NFT in a wallet or custody arrangement you control until you claim.
- Record the request ID and transaction hashes outside the browser session.
- Never disclose a seed phrase or private key to someone offering to “process” or “accelerate” a withdrawal.
- Remember that a claim transaction needs ETH for gas even though the transaction’s output is ETH.
What to remember
Lido unstaking is a request, finalization, and claim process rather than an instant conversion. The unstETH NFT is the claim ticket; the queue is FIFO; and timing depends on oracle processing, the timelock, and available ETH. The payout rate is fixed only at finalization, so 1 stETH is not an unconditional promise of 1 ETH. Keep control of the NFT, monitor the request through Lido’s status tools, and claim only after the request becomes claimable.
