Yes—you can use an online image upscaler to make pixel blocks less noticeable and produce a larger, sharper-looking picture. But AI enhancement estimates plausible detail; it cannot reliably recover information that the original image no longer contains. If the problem is softness from focus or motion rather than visible blocks or low resolution, use an unblur or sharpening tool instead.
What “unpixelating” can—and cannot—do
Pixelation usually means an image has too few pixels for the size at which you want to view or print it. Upscaling increases its dimensions. Conventional interpolation fills in pixels by estimating between existing ones; generative enhancement can also synthesize likely edges and textures, making the enlargement appear more detailed.
Neither method can establish exactly what the original high-resolution image looked like. A small, blocky source can correspond to many possible originals, and an AI-generated eye, letter, or texture may look convincing without being true. Treat an enhanced image as an improved presentation, not evidence of details absent from the source.
Choose a tool based on the problem
| Tool or workflow | Best fit | Documented details | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Firefly online upscaler | Browser-based enlargement | Accepts JPEG, PNG, and WebP files up to 100 MB. Adobe describes limited free generative credits, with paid plans for unrestricted use, advanced features, or higher-resolution outputs. | Uploading is subject to Adobe’s terms and privacy policy; the page says users confirm they are 18 or older. Review those terms before uploading sensitive images. |
| Photoshop Generative Upscale | Desktop workflow with selectable scale and model | Adobe documents 2x and 4x output. Firefly Upscaler is described as restoring low-resolution images up to 6144 × 6144 px; Topaz Gigapixel as preserving existing detail up to 56 megapixels for premium subscribers; and Topaz Bloom as adding creative detail up to 9 megapixels for premium subscribers. | These are vendor-documented capabilities, not independent comparisons. The page was last updated May 20, 2026. |
| Adobe Camera Raw Super Resolution | Supported Camera Raw workflow | Doubles width and height, resulting in four times the total pixel count. JPEG and TIFF are among the additional supported formats. | The image must be opened in Camera Raw. Super Resolution is not available through Photoshop’s Camera Raw Filter. |
| Google Photos Unblur and Zoom Enhance | Blurred photos or zoomed regions on supported Pixel phones | Google documents Zoom Enhance on Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. It lets users zoom a region, crop and enhance it, then save a copy. Google Photos also documents an Unblur control. | Availability and menus may change. Zoom Enhance and Unblur address blur or zoomed detail; they are not interchangeable with ordinary low-resolution upscaling. |
Firefly Upscaler, Topaz Gigapixel, and Topaz Bloom have different documented behaviors: the first is described as restoring low-resolution images, Gigapixel as preserving existing detail, and Bloom as adding creative detail. Those descriptions do not establish which will look best on a particular photo.

How to upscale an image online
- Keep the original. Save a separate working copy so you can compare the result and return to the untouched file.
- Start with the best source available. Choose the version with the highest resolution and least compression. Repeatedly enlarging or resaving a low-quality copy does not restore missing source detail.
- Open the upscaler and upload the copy. In Adobe Firefly’s web upscaler, use a JPEG, PNG, or WebP file no larger than 100 MB. Check the service’s terms and privacy policy first if the image is sensitive.
- Apply a moderate enhancement first. If a tool offers several scale or model options, begin with a restrained enlargement rather than immediately choosing the largest output. Stronger enhancement can introduce more invented or distorted detail.
- Inspect at normal size and at 100%. Look closely at faces, text, straight edges, and repeating fine patterns. Check whether features have changed shape, letters have become different characters, or textures look unnaturally smooth or busy.
- Export a new copy and retain the original. Compare the two files at the size you actually need. Keep the enhanced image labeled as an AI-processed version if accuracy matters.
When an online upscaler is the wrong fix
The photo is blurred, not pixelated
Blur from missed focus or camera movement is a different problem from insufficient resolution. A sharpening or unblur feature may improve the appearance of mild softness. Google documents Unblur in Google Photos and Zoom Enhance on the Pixel models listed above; results and availability depend on the device and feature. Severe motion blur may erase information that a tool cannot reliably reconstruct.
Text, a face, or a redaction must be verified
Do not use AI enhancement to claim that obscured text, a redaction, a license plate, or an indistinct face has been truthfully recovered. A generated result can supply plausible-looking details that were never visible in the source. A vendor of one online service also warns that heavily censored text cannot be restored and says generated output should not be used to reverse redactions; that warning is consistent with the basic limitation of inference, not proof that any tool can reveal what was concealed.

The source has only a few blocks for the subject
If an important object is represented by only a handful of pixels, enhancement has little reliable information to work from. Try to obtain the original file or a higher-resolution copy instead. Upscaling may make the image easier to view, but it cannot make a guess dependable.

What to check before uploading or exporting
- File support and size: confirm the format and maximum upload size. Firefly’s documented limits are JPEG, PNG, or WebP up to 100 MB.
- Output scale and limits: distinguish a stated enlargement factor from maximum pixel dimensions or megapixels. A larger output file is not automatically more accurate.
- How detail is handled: conventional interpolation estimates pixel values; generative tools may synthesize plausible details. Neither guarantees recovery of the original scene.
- Cost and access: Firefly describes limited free generative credits and paid plans; Photoshop’s page ties some Topaz model capabilities to premium subscribers. Check current product terms, as availability can change.
- Privacy: review the service’s current terms and privacy policy before sending private or sensitive images. Adobe’s page points users to those policies; the material available here does not establish image-retention or training practices.
- Output quality: judge the saved copy at its intended viewing size and inspect critical details at full size, rather than relying only on a small preview.
Why enlarging is not the same as restoring
Adobe describes Camera Raw Super Resolution as producing “an enhanced image with similar results as Raw Details but with 2x the linear resolution.” Doubling each dimension creates four times as many pixels, but the count of output pixels is not the same as four times as much observed information. The software must estimate or generate values for the added pixels.
