To edit an Arma 3 PBO, make a backup, unpack the archive into a working folder, change the required files without altering their relative paths, preserve the archive’s prefix metadata, and pack the folder into a new PBO. PBO Manager (the current pboman3 project) provides a graphical workflow for those steps on Windows and Linux. You can also retain the older pboconsole.exe commands for scripted jobs, although that console project is deprecated.
What a PBO is and what PBO Manager does
A PBO is the archive format used for many Arma 3 missions, addons and modification files. A PBO normally contains configuration files, SQF scripts, textures, models and other assets in a directory-like structure. The archive also carries namespace information (the prefix) that affects how the game resolves paths.

The current pboman3 project also advertises support for PBOs created by Mikero’s tools, integration with Windows Explorer, GNOME Files and KDE Dolphin, and metadata supplied through pbo.json or $PBOPREFIX$.
It does not turn a mission into a different type of project. You still need to understand the mission or addon’s expected folder layout, configuration syntax and dependencies. PBO Manager only performs the container operation; an invalid script, missing dependency or incorrect path remains invalid after packing.

Install PBO Manager before editing
Windows
- Use the project’s installer or download the manual Windows binaries from its Releases page.
- Install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2015–2019 if it is not already present. The project identifies this runtime as a requirement; without it, Windows may report that
vcruntime140.dllis missing. - On Windows 11, the project says the Windows 10 instructions still apply. Its README recommends the MSIX package when you want immersive-menu integration.
- Launch PBO Manager and verify that it opens before you begin working on an archive.
Linux AppImage
Download the Linux AppImage, then make it executable and run it from a terminal:
chmod +x PBOManager-x86_64.AppImage

Before you unpack: protect the source and identify the archive
Make a working copy
- Close Arma 3 and any editor or tool that may be writing to the mission or mod directory.
- Copy the original
.pboto a separate backup location. Keep that untouched file until the rebuilt archive has been tested. - Copy the PBO again into a working area, or choose a separate destination for the extracted folder. Avoid editing files directly inside a live installation.
A backup gives you a known-good rollback if the rebuilt archive has a wrong prefix, a changed filename, an incomplete extraction or a signing problem.
Determine whether it is a mission or an addon
Mission PBOs are generally placed in an Arma 3 world’s mission directory and contain files such as description.ext, mission.sqm and scripts. Addon PBOs normally live below a mod’s addons directory and often include configuration and asset trees. The distinction matters when you deploy the result, but the unpack/edit/pack operation is the same.

Unpack a PBO with the graphical interface
- Open PBO Manager and use its open or browse action to select the source
.pbo. - Choose the application’s unpack or extract action and select an output location. Extract to a new, clearly named folder rather than mixing files with another project.
- Wait for extraction to finish, then inspect the resulting folder. It should contain the archive’s files and subdirectories as normal filesystem items.
- Record the original filename, folder location and any prefix metadata before making edits. These details are useful if you need to compare the rebuilt archive with the source.

Edit mission or addon files without breaking references
Changing description.ext
For a mission, open the extracted folder and edit description.ext in a text editor. Keep the filename and its location unchanged unless you are deliberately changing every reference to it. The same rule applies to mission.sqm, SQF files, configuration files and image or sound assets.
After editing, check syntax in the same way you normally check Arma configuration or script files. PBO Manager does not validate SQF, config syntax, class inheritance or mission logic.
Preserve relative paths and case
References in Arma content depend on the path stored in the archive. Do not casually rename a directory, change a filename’s spelling or move an asset to a different level. A script can be syntactically correct and still fail because a texture, include file or called script is no longer at the referenced path.

- Keep directory hierarchy intact for files you did not intend to move.
- Use the same filename extension and spelling expected by each reference.
- When you intentionally move a file, update every mission, configuration and script reference to it.
- Do not add temporary editor files, backups or unrelated folders to the archive.
Keep a change record
For repeatable work, note which files changed and why. This makes it easier to compare the extracted folder with the backup and to diagnose a failure after deployment.
Preserve or set the PBO prefix
The prefix is part of the PBO’s internal namespace and acts as a path definition for addon content. For a small edit to an existing addon, preserving the original prefix is usually the safest choice. A changed prefix can make classes, scripts or assets appear under a different namespace even when every file is present.
$PBOPREFIX$ formatting rules
The Community documentation describes $PBOPREFIX$ as a text file in the addon root. It must have no extension and contain exactly one namespace line:
- one prefix value only;
- no surrounding whitespace;
- no final newline;
- no filename extension.
Examples of valid values include:
myAddon
myModmyAddon
xmyModaddonsmyAddonThe PBO Manager convention uses the $prefix$ filename pattern. Check the extracted project for the existing file before creating or renaming metadata. A prefix file in the wrong directory or with an extra newline can produce a namespace different from the one you intended.

Using pbo.json
PBO Manager also supports metadata supplied through pbo.json. Keep that file’s structure and location consistent with the project’s existing setup. If an archive already contains both metadata mechanisms, do not delete or rewrite one casually; first determine which value the project expects and preserve the established configuration.

Choosing a prefix for a new addon
For a new addon, select a namespace that matches the project’s intended folder structure and is unlikely to collide with another addon. The namespace should describe the addon’s place in the mod rather than reflect a temporary extraction directory. Prefix design is a project decision; there is no universal value that is correct for every addon.
Repack the edited folder into a PBO
- Close files that are still being edited and remove editor backups, temporary files and unrelated material from the working folder.
- Confirm that the prefix metadata is in the expected root location and follows the one-line formatting rules.
- In PBO Manager, select the working folder and choose its pack action.
- Choose a new output filename and destination first. Do not overwrite the untouched source until the rebuilt archive has passed testing.
- Wait for packing to complete, then verify that the output has a
.pboextension and a plausible file size. - Keep the extracted folder and the original backup until deployment is confirmed.
The archived console equivalent is:
pboconsole.exe -pack ./my-pbo-folderThat command packs the specified folder; the exact output naming and destination depend on the legacy tool’s behavior and your working directory, so inspect the resulting files rather than assuming an overwrite is safe.

Install it in the correct location
Place a rebuilt mission PBO in the appropriate Arma 3 mission directory for the target world or profile. Place an addon PBO below the intended mod’s addons directory, with any required mod structure around it. If you are testing on a server, deploy to a non-production test profile or server first.
Run a focused test
- Start Arma 3 with the same mission, mod set and dependencies used by the original archive.
- Load the edited mission or activate the addon in a controlled test session.
- Exercise the feature you changed instead of checking only that the game starts.
- Review the game’s RPT or other relevant log output for missing files, bad paths, configuration errors and signature problems.
- If the test fails, remove the rebuilt PBO and restore the untouched backup while you investigate.
This validation sequence is procedural guidance; no independent runtime test of a particular rebuilt archive is established here. The RPT/log output is the practical place to find the reason a technically valid archive is not working in-game.

The program will not start on Windows
If Windows reports a missing vcruntime140.dll, install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2015–2019 required by the project, then start PBO Manager again. Also confirm that you downloaded a binary for the correct Windows environment.

The packed PBO loads but files are missing
- Compare the extracted folder with the backup and look for a renamed or moved file.
- Check every relative path in scripts, configuration and asset references.
- Verify that the file was inside the folder selected for packing, not beside it.
- Inspect the RPT/log output for the exact missing path.
Classes or assets appear under the wrong namespace
Recheck the original prefix and compare it with the rebuilt archive’s $PBOPREFIX$ or pbo.json metadata. Restore the original value for a small edit. For a new addon, make sure the chosen prefix matches the namespace expected by its configuration and scripts.
The prefix seems correct but packing still behaves unexpectedly
Open the prefix file as raw text and remove leading or trailing spaces, additional lines and the final newline. Confirm that the filename has no extension and that it is located in the addon root. These formatting details are significant.
The game reports a signature problem
Check whether the server or client requires signed addons and whether the rebuilt file is being treated as a replacement for a signed release. A changed PBO may need the project’s normal signing and key-management process; repacking alone does not create a valid signature accepted by every server.
The archive works on one machine but not another
Compare the loaded mod set, dependency versions, deployed directory structure and mission parameters. A PBO can be correctly packed while the second environment is missing a required dependency or loading a different copy of the archive.
Choosing between PBO tools
PBO Manager is a practical default when you want a current graphical workflow and occasional metadata or shell integration. Other tools suit different jobs:

Choose on the basis of platform support, GUI versus command-line automation, compatibility with the particular archive, prefix and metadata behavior, and whether you need extraction only or both extraction and repacking. If an archive was created by a specialized tool, test a copy before adopting a different packer for a production build.
Licensing and redistribution
Technical ability to unpack and repack a PBO does not automatically grant redistribution rights. Bohemia Interactive’s official FAQ states that users may unpack PBOs and repack their content, including modified content, in their modification’s PBOs, subject to the license covering the original data. The FAQ gives APL-SA material as an example that must retain the same license when modified.
Before publishing or distributing a rebuilt archive, read the license shipped with every third-party addon and preserve any required notices, attribution or share-alike terms. A private edit for testing and a redistributed modification can have different obligations.
