Graveyard Keeper 2 does not use one global “tier up” button. You advance through its Technology Tree one connected node at a time: earn the red, green, or blue Tech Points shown on a target node, purchase every technology connected before it, and satisfy any additional reputation, quest, recipe, or location condition. Open the tree and read the node itself before you grind; its color costs and gates determine exactly what you must do next.
The sequel keeps the familiar Technology Tree and adds a separate talent system. That distinction matters because Inspiration or a talent point cannot pay for a colored technology node. Technology unlocks can also reveal a recipe, workstation, or building blueprint without supplying the materials needed to craft or place it.
What “technology tiers” mean in Graveyard Keeper 2
Players often call later nodes “new tiers,” but current-build references describe progression as a set of connected branches rather than a single level meter. You move farther along a branch by buying prerequisite nodes. A later technology can remain unavailable even when you have a large stockpile of points if an earlier connected node is still locked.

There is no evidence of a universally correct branch order. The efficient choice depends on the quest, recipe, workstation, or building you are trying to enable. Treat the branch name as a clue to the work it supports, not as a character class that permanently locks you out of the others.
Open the Technology Tree and inspect the target node
Start every unlock attempt in the Technology Tree rather than by farming a favorite activity at random. Select the technology you want and read its complete card. The card identifies the colored Tech Points required, shows what the node unlocks, and displays its connections to prerequisite technologies.
Take note of every symbol on the card:
- Colored point costs: red, green, and blue requirements must be paid with the matching Tech Point colors.
- Incoming connections: these indicate earlier technologies that must be purchased first.
- Portrait artwork: a portrait node is a reputation gate rather than a normal point purchase.
- A question mark: a hidden node has an individual trigger, such as a quest, crafting a recipe, or reaching a location.
- Unlock result: the card tells you whether the purchase opens a recipe, workstation, blueprint, or another capability.
Do not assume that having enough of one color is sufficient. A node can require more than one color, and the displayed combination is the authority for that playthrough and game version.

Red, green, and blue Tech Points come from different kinds of play. The documented sources include gathering or clearing resources, completing workbenches, crafting, performing autopsies, studying new items, and using techbooks. Because activities award different colors and amounts, match your activity to the target node instead of treating every task as interchangeable.

The references do not establish one fixed point value for every action. Rewards can vary by activity, so rely on the live game feedback and the target node’s remaining cost. If you are collecting points efficiently, track the color deficit after each action instead of farming a task simply because it is familiar.

Follow prerequisite links before spending points
A technology’s point cost is only one part of its requirement. The tree’s connected path controls the order in which nodes can be bought. The fan-maintained planner documents prerequisite relationships and costs, but those details are community reference data and should be checked against the live tree after updates.
- Select the final technology you want. Keep its card open long enough to identify every color cost and every incoming connection.
- Trace each connection backward. Move from the target toward the starting part of the branch and identify any node that is not yet purchased.
- List the missing nodes in order. Write down the prerequisite sequence so you do not spend points on an unrelated branch while a required node remains unpaid.
- Earn the colors for the earliest missing node. Use the activity sources that match that node’s colors, not the colors of the final technology alone.
- Purchase the prerequisite. Once its conditions and point costs are satisfied, buy it in the Technology Tree.
- Repeat along the connection. Continue one node at a time until the target technology is directly connected to purchased prerequisites.
- Recheck the target card. The card may reveal a reputation, quest, recipe, or location gate in addition to its point cost.
- Purchase the target and inspect the result. Confirm what was unlocked, then open the corresponding recipe, construction, or workstation screen to see its separate material requirements.
This sequence prevents the most common wasted effort: accumulating the final node’s points before discovering that an earlier node still blocks the path.
Handle reputation and hidden “?” requirements
Portrait nodes use reputation
Portrait nodes are reputation unlocks. The documented behavior is that they unlock for free once your reputation is high enough, but only when you open the Technology Tree. If a portrait remains unavailable, raise the relevant reputation through the game’s normal progression, then reopen the tree and inspect the node again. Do not keep spending colored points on the assumption that the portrait is waiting for a purchase.
Question-mark nodes use individual triggers
A hidden question-mark node does not expose a normal point price until its trigger is met. The recorded triggers include completing a quest, crafting a particular recipe, and reaching a location. When a “?” blocks your route, search your active objectives and recently discovered recipes before farming Tech Points. The correct action may be a story step or exploration milestone rather than a resource grind.
Quest and recipe conditions can coexist with point costs
Some technologies combine a colored cost with another requirement. Meeting the point total does not waive the quest, recipe, reputation, or location condition. Read the card after every prerequisite purchase because the newly connected node may show a different gate than the one before it.

Keep Tech Points separate from talents and Inspiration
The developer’s official announcement describes a retained Technology Tree alongside a new talent system. Gameplay references distinguish Inspiration from the red, green, and blue Tech Points used by technology nodes. Inspiration, including a talent-point star or similar talent currency, cannot substitute for a colored cost.
Use the two systems for different decisions:
- Technology Tree: spend the required colored Tech Points to unlock recipes, workstations, buildings, and other branch capabilities.
- Talent system: spend Inspiration or talent points on talent choices when the talent interface calls for them.
If a node still says that a color is missing, opening the talent screen will not solve it. Return to the Technology Tree, identify the exact color deficit, and choose an activity that awards that color.
Choose a branch by the capability you need now
Because no source supports one best order for all players, plan from your immediate objective. Start with the output you need, then work backward through the tree.
When a building or construction step is blocked
Open Building and locate the blueprint or construction-related node tied to the project. Trace its prerequisites before gathering materials. This avoids collecting supplies for a structure whose technology is still several nodes away.
When production requires metalwork
Use Metallurgy when the bottleneck is a metal recipe, processing step, or workstation. Check whether the chain first requires a resource-clearing or workbench technology; those earlier nodes may determine which point colors you need to farm.

When a crop or farm output is required
Follow Farming for field, crop, and agricultural production. A farming technology can unlock the recipe or process without automatically providing seeds, ingredients, or construction materials, so inspect the resulting recipe immediately.
When religious production is the objective
Follow Theology for faith-related capabilities. If a portrait or quest marker appears in the path, treat that condition as the next objective instead of repeatedly collecting points.
When corpse processing or examination is holding you back
Follow Anatomy and use the documented autopsy and study activities when they match the node’s color requirements. This lets the work needed for the branch contribute to both progression and point generation.
When a meal or ingredient process is required
Follow Cooking and verify the station, ingredients, and intermediate recipes exposed by the technology. The unlock changes what you can make; it does not guarantee that the kitchen setup or supplies already exist.

What an unlock actually gives you
A purchased technology may reveal a recipe, workstation, or building blueprint. It does not necessarily place a workstation in the world, complete a building, or deliver every ingredient and construction resource. After buying the node, open the relevant crafting or building interface and record its remaining requirements.

- For a recipe, check ingredients, processing steps, and the station where it is made.
- For a workstation, check construction materials and the location rules for placing it.
- For a building blueprint, check every component and any prerequisite structure.
- For a production chain, identify intermediate recipes that may require their own technologies.
This second check explains why a player can see a new icon after an unlock and still be unable to produce the item immediately.
Troubleshoot a technology that remains locked
Use this order when a node refuses to unlock:
- Read the entire card again. Confirm every red, green, and blue number and look for text beneath the point cost.
- Check the incoming connections. Select each preceding node and verify that it is purchased, not merely visible or highlighted.
- Identify the node type. A portrait points to reputation; a question mark points to a hidden trigger; an ordinary node usually requires points plus its prerequisites.
- Review active quests and recent discoveries. A quest, recipe craft, or location visit may be the missing condition.
- Reopen the Technology Tree. Reputation portrait nodes are documented to unlock when the tree is opened after the reputation threshold is reached.
- Confirm you are using the right currency. Inspiration and talent points do not pay colored technology costs.
- Check the live game rather than an old planner. Community prerequisite and cost data can change after patches.
- Inspect the post-unlock requirement separately. If the node is unlocked but the capability still cannot be used, the remaining issue is probably materials, a workstation, or a building requirement.
Following this checklist separates a genuinely missing prerequisite from a simple resource shortage and prevents unnecessary grinding.
How current is the progression information?
Lazy Bear Games’ official announcement confirms that Graveyard Keeper 2 retains the Technology Tree and adds the talent system. The announcement archive records the game’s September 22, 2026 launch and progression-related patch notes through October 6, 2026. Those official materials are the best authority for the existence of the systems and their patch history.

Detailed branch behavior, point sources, node prerequisites, and totals come from unofficial fan-maintained references. The fan planner reports 236 technologies across the six branches in an extracted current-build reference accessed October 13, 2026. That number is not an official statistic and can change with patches. Treat exact costs and the total count as version-sensitive: when the live card differs from a planner, follow the in-game card.
The practical method remains stable even when a patch changes a number: open the target node, earn its displayed colors, satisfy the connected path, complete any non-point gate, and then inspect the recipe or construction requirements that follow.
