Dragon’s Dogma 2 Hard Mode launches October 9, 2026, in both the base game and Dark Arisen. You can switch an existing Normal-mode save to Hard during your playthrough; you do not have to finish the story first. Be cautious, though: the developer says returning to Normal requires clearing the game once. The launch-day update also adds a restart-from-the-beginning option, which lets you start over on Normal rather than simply toggling the difficulty back.
How to unlock Hard Mode
Hard Mode arrives with the October 9, 2026 update and is available in the base game as well as Dark Arisen. The developer has not said that owning the expansion is required. Game director Kento Kinoshita and producer Naoto Oyama confirmed the availability and save options in a September 30, 2026 interview.

If you are already playing on Normal, you can switch that save to Hard Mode midway through the run. The interview does not specify the menu path or button sequence, so use the in-game options after installing the update rather than relying on an unverified walkthrough. It also does not establish whether starting a new Hard save requires a prior story clear.
Choose between a fresh Hard run and switching saves
- Start fresh on Hard if you want the intended challenge from the beginning. Kinoshita said a new Hard-mode save is designed to keep the adventure thrilling throughout.
- Switch your Normal save to Hard if you want to test the mode with your existing character and progress. This is supported during a playthrough, but the reported route back to Normal is restrictive.
The interview does not say that the two paths have different Hard Mode rules beyond when you enter the mode and the character-level caveat described below.

Can you switch back to Normal?
Not as a simple difficulty toggle, according to the interview. Kinoshita said you must clear the game once to return from Hard Mode to Normal. Oyama added that the October 9 update introduces a restart-from-the-beginning feature, so a player who gets stuck on Hard can restart on Normal. That means abandoning the current run’s starting point, not just lowering difficulty in place.
What changes in Hard Mode?
Kinoshita describes the goal as keeping the adventure tense and encouraging players to use items they may rarely need on Normal. He said the mode responds to feedback that late-game enemies could feel too easy. As he put it, “The core concept of Hard Mode is to let players enjoy a thrilling adventure from beginning to end.” This wording is from the published English translation of the interview, not an official English-language Capcom transcript.

The interview explains the design intent, but does not publish exact enemy-stat multipliers or confirm specific changes to damage, experience, currency, drops, or enemy placement. Those details should not be assumed from the original Dragon’s Dogma or from fan speculation.

Character level may affect how demanding the base game feels. Kinoshita said a fresh Hard run should remain thrilling throughout, but cautioned that a Level 999 character may not find enough challenge in the base game. He pointed players with extremely high-level characters toward the new expansion area and its dungeons for a tougher challenge. This is the director’s design explanation, not an independently tested level threshold.

Release and expansion context
Capcom’s June 10, 2026 release announcement lists Dark Arisen for October 9, 2026. It describes an expansion DLC for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam that requires the base game, while also identifying physical editions for Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5. Those release details do not make the expansion a Hard Mode requirement: the director says Hard Mode is playable in both the base game and Dark Arisen. Capcom’s release information via PR TIMES.
