To unlock Handyman in How to Fish, defeat the Mutated Bowhead Whale with a bare-hands punch as the killing blow. Guides report that you can weaken it with guns first, but you must stop shooting before its health reaches zero; brass knuckles reportedly do not count. This technique is not confirmed for every current game build, so check whether the achievement actually unlocks on your version.
What the Handyman requirement means
The final boss is the Mutated Bowhead Whale. Guides interpret Handyman as requiring the final hit to be delivered with empty hands—not that you must fight the entire boss without weapons. The commonly reported approach is to deal most of the damage with firearms, then finish with punches. The exact health threshold for switching to fists is not documented, and one guide notes that the game does not show a precise numeric boss-health value.
Brass knuckles are reported not to satisfy the bare-hands condition. Unequip them and any firearm before attempting the finishing punches.

- Before beginning the whale sequence, prepare your weapon upgrades and healing food. Consider staging extra cooked fish near the military base, where guides recommend fighting the mutated whale.
- Give the Volcano Island scientist five fish to receive whale bait, then attach the bait to your fishing rod.
- Catch and kill the regular Bowhead Whale. Its attack is described as a charge followed by a leap and a slam; move as it launches, and conserve healing items for what follows.
- Carry the whale carcass up the plank route and throw it into the volcano lava. This summons the Mutated Bowhead Whale. Move toward the military base area for the fight; guides recommend it as flatter terrain.
How to manage health and damage
Prepare for both whale fights
Guides recommend an upgraded assault rifle and a substantial supply of cooked fish. One guide recommends lava-cooked fish and reports that cooking in lava gives food a 1.5× value; treat that multiplier as version-sensitive rather than a guaranteed current value. Another suggests Foot Snails for healing and dynamite for damage. These are in-game strategies, not requirements for Handyman.

Stay mobile during the mutated fight
Keep moving and attack during openings. The reported hazards include rolls, stomps, lava pools, and later-phase projectiles or meteors. Strafe and dodge out of danger, then heal promptly after taking damage. The fight can be a continuous resource check, so do not assume you will have a safe opportunity to restock after summoning the boss.
Save a safe finish
When the whale is nearly defeated, stop shooting and let any remaining damage resolve. Because the health bar does not provide an exact numeric value, do not rely on a barely visible sliver. Restore to full health before approaching: guides warn that the boss can kill you at close range. Then confirm your firearm and brass knuckles are unequipped and punch until the whale falls. The sources do not establish how much health to leave for the finishing punches.

What to do after the kill
- Pick up the Whale Fin.
- Return it to the Volcano Island scientist and take the RHIB keys.
- Board the RHIB and start it to complete the described story sequence.
Does the punch method work in the current patch?
The guides support the intended bare-hands final-hit requirement and describe gun damage followed by a punch as the usual method, but they do not establish that it triggers Handyman in every current build. Detailed guides were updated August 25 and 27, 2026. A separate fan guide updated October 7 says its information is source-based rather than independently playtested and points to evidence through patch 1.0.12; it also reports that patch 1.0.9 made creature health and damage mode-dependent. A September guide calls the older gun-then-fist method unconfirmed in 1.0.12. Accordingly, treat the method as reported rather than guaranteed, and verify the achievement in your own game after the kill. The available guides also do not settle whether co-op reliably shares achievement credit.
