There is no documented permanent unlock quest for the launch roster in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. The official FAQ lists 20 playable characters at launch. The apparent “unlock” happens inside a match: your third and fourth selected teammates become available after a qualifying stage break or when you lose a round. Official pages name seven stages but do not publish a complete permanent stage-unlock route, so you should not grind Episode Mode or another activity on the assumption that it unlocks the base roster.
The direct answer: launch characters are listed as playable
The official 2026 FAQ presents these 20 fighters as the launch roster:

That list is an availability statement, not a sequence of tasks. The FAQ does not attach an Episode Mode clear, level requirement, account milestone, hidden challenge, or other permanent progression condition to any of these 20 fighters. If one of them is missing from a selection screen, first check that you are looking at the game’s standard launch roster and that the game has finished installing or updating. The published information does not support a secret unlock-code or campaign-clear solution.

In other words, “unlock every character” is misleading when it refers to the base roster. These fighters are launch content. The only documented delay concerns when selected teammates enter an individual battle, not whether your account owns them.

Why the game can appear to have character unlocks
Each player builds a team of four, but the match does not expose all four teammates immediately. The FAQ says that players start with their first two selected characters available. The remaining two are match-specific reserves. They become usable when you create a stage break with a qualifying action or when you lose a round.
This is temporary access during the current fight. It does not add a character to your account, alter the roster in another mode, or unlock a new save-file item. After the match, team selection follows the normal four-character rules again. A player who sees a third fighter appear after a wall interaction has triggered the team system, not completed a permanent progression objective.
The distinction also matters when comparing screenshots or videos. One match may show only two active portraits at the beginning, while another shows all four after a break or round loss. Both can be using the same launch roster. The visible change is governed by match state.

1. Select a four-character team
Choose four fighters during team selection. Only slots one and two are available at the opening bell, so decide which pair can cover your immediate game plan. Slots three and four remain part of your team but are not active at the start. This is why a newly chosen fourth character can look unavailable even though that fighter is listed in the roster.
2. Move the fight toward an edge
The relevant interaction occurs near the edge of the screen. Positioning matters: a normal hit in the middle of the arena is not described as a stage-break trigger. Work toward a boundary while watching spacing and the opponent’s recovery. The edge requirement is practical as well as technical; attempting the same move far from a boundary may produce ordinary hitstun instead of the transition event.
3. Land a qualifying stage-break action
The FAQ identifies several categories that can cause a transition or wall splat:
Rank #2
- Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
- It’s time to build your dream team and break some spirits in blistering 4v4 fighting action.
- Certain attacks or throws that are coded to produce a break.
- Selected Skill attacks.
- A successful light-route Link Attack performed near the edge.
“Certain” and “selected” are important qualifiers. The official explanation does not provide a universal list saying that every normal, every throw, or every Skill works. Use the in-game Battle Guides and Character Guides to identify the permitted move for the fighter you are using, then practice the timing in Training Mode. Do not assume that a move qualifies merely because it launches, causes high damage, or reaches the wall.
4. Confirm the transition or wall splat
A successful break changes the fight’s area or produces the stated wall-splat result. Once the break has registered, the additional team members are available according to the match rules. If the screen does not transition and no wall-splat event occurs, assume the attempt did not meet the move, spacing, or timing requirement and try again rather than treating the character as permanently locked.
A transition is therefore useful feedback. It tells you that the correct category of action connected at a suitable edge position. A regular corner combo without the qualifying property is not enough, and the FAQ does not promise that every arena edge behaves identically for every attack.
5. The alternative trigger is losing a round
The FAQ also lists a lost round as a condition that gives access to the additional teammates. This is not a recommended strategy for winning, but it explains why a player may see slots three and four become available after a round defeat even without a successful break. If you are testing the system, note the difference between a round-loss activation and a stage-break activation; neither one carries over as a permanent account unlock.
What “unlocking a stage” means in this game
The same word describes two different systems. A stage break is an event inside a fight: a qualifying attack or throw near the edge can move the battle into another section or cause a wall splat. It is not a permanent stage-unlock transaction. Reaching a new section during a match does not add a new thumbnail to the stage-select menu.
The official PlayStation game page names and describes seven stages:
Rank #3

- It’s time to build your dream team and break some spirits in blistering 4v4 fighting action. Choose from an expanding roster of 20 iconic Marvel characters at launch, each rendered in a bold new anime-inspired art style and members of their own unique teams of equally impressive heroes and villains.
| Stage | What the official page establishes | Permanent unlock condition |
|---|---|---|
| Asgard | Named as a playable, multi-sectioned arena with transitions. | Not stated in the reviewed official materials. |
| Marvel’s New York (Night) | Named as a playable stage. | Not stated. |
| Wakanda | Named as a playable, multi-sectioned arena. | Not stated. |
| Marvel’s New York (Day) | Named as a playable stage. | Not stated. |
| Savage Land | Named as a playable, multi-sectioned arena. | Not stated. |
| X-Mansion | Named as a playable stage. | Not stated. |
| Knowhere | Named as a playable, multi-sectioned arena. | Not stated. |
The reviewed pages do not provide a stage-by-stage table showing that a particular arena requires an Episode Mode chapter, a number of wins, a difficulty setting, or an account level. They also do not explicitly state that every named base-game stage is selectable immediately in every mode. Therefore, the accurate answer is limited: these are the officially named stages, while their permanent selection requirements are undocumented in the cited material.
That limitation is preferable to guessing. A greyed-out icon might reflect a mode restriction, downloadable content, installation status, or a later update rather than a universal campaign gate. Only an exact menu message or a current official notice can establish the reason.
How to check a stage when the menu does not show it
- Read the mode’s stage-select screen and any lock message exactly; do not infer a requirement from a greyed-out thumbnail alone.
- Check the game’s current Battle Guides, Episode Mode information, and update notices for a mode-specific rule.
- Verify that you are not viewing a DLC-only stage list or a restricted local/online ruleset.
- If the message still gives no requirement, consult the latest official FAQ or publisher update. The launch documentation does not establish a universal unlock path.
Episode Mode and offline play do not have a documented roster requirement
The FAQ lists Episode Mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides, Character Guides, and additional offline content. Arcadia Rumble is also described as fully playable offline, with optional online features. Nothing in that description ties completion of an offline mode to adding one of the 20 launch fighters.
On PS5, offline content does not require PlayStation Plus. The PC offline SKU can be played without a PlayStation account. Online Lobby, Room Matches, Ranked, Casual, profiles, and other online functions require an internet connection and an account; PS5 online features require PlayStation Plus. These are access requirements for network features, not character or stage unlock conditions.
This separation helps diagnose common confusion. If Training Mode opens but Ranked does not, the issue is connectivity or account access, not a missing character quest. If Episode Mode is available before any online subscription is purchased, that is consistent with the FAQ’s offline description. Neither situation changes the launch roster.
Launch content versus the Year 1 Character and Stage Pass
The Year 1 Character and Stage Pass is additional downloadable content, not a challenge that unlocks the 20 launch fighters. The official FAQ says the pass contains the first four additional DLC characters and one additional stage when those items release, plus result poses for the 20 base characters.

| Content category | What it includes | How it relates to “unlocking” |
|---|---|---|
| Launch roster | 20 characters listed in the official FAQ. | Presented as playable launch content; no permanent unlock task is documented. |
| Year 1 pass | Four additional characters, one additional stage, and result poses for the base roster. | Purchased post-launch content; not an in-game progression reward. |
| Stage-break system | In-match transitions or wall splats caused by qualifying actions. | Temporary match access and arena movement, not ownership of a stage. |
The current US PlayStation page lists the pass as a separate $34.99 add-on and includes it in the Digital Deluxe and Ultimate editions. Prices and availability vary by region and can change, so use the storefront for your territory at the time of purchase. A pass purchase should be evaluated as a DLC decision: you are buying future characters, a stage, and result poses, not removing a lock from Captain America, Iron Man, or any other launch fighter.

The PlayStation.Blog launch announcement gave the Standard Edition a $59.99 USD MSRP and the Digital Deluxe Edition an $84.99 USD MSRP. It described the Deluxe edition as including the Year 1 Characters & Stage Pass. The current US PlayStation page lists the Standard Edition at $59.99, Digital Deluxe at $84.99, Ultimate at $99.99, and the separate pass at $34.99. The announcement placed launch on August 6, 2026, with August 7 in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and Korea.

Buying a physical PS5 copy or a digital edition grants access to the game you purchased; it should not be described as a method for completing an unlock quest. Choose the pass or an edition containing it only if you want the post-launch characters, stage, and result poses. Regional storefronts can show different currencies, taxes, bundles, or availability.

The official PlayStation page confirms PS5 compatibility with arcade sticks and leverless controllers. These are optional input devices. A standard controller is not described as insufficient, and no peripheral, consumable, repair item, or special hardware is required to access the launch characters or the named stages.

Troubleshooting: what to do when a character or stage seems locked
The character is absent from the roster
- Confirm that you are looking at the base-game roster rather than a DLC filter or a mode with a restricted ruleset.
- Allow the installation and any pending update to finish, then restart the game.
- Check the official roster list against the 20 names above. The launch FAQ does not describe a campaign, level, or challenge gate for them.
The third or fourth teammate will not appear
- Remember that those slots are unavailable at the opening of a match by design.
- Use a qualifying edge interaction from the Battle Guides or Character Guides, and make sure the result registers as a transition or wall splat.
- Do not assume that an arbitrary normal attack or throw qualifies; the FAQ deliberately limits the trigger to certain actions.
- If you lose a round, check whether the additional teammates become available under the alternate condition.
A stage thumbnail is unavailable
- Read the menu’s exact message and identify whether the mode is filtering stages.
- Check for a DLC designation, because the Year 1 stage is separate from the named launch-stage list.
- Look for a current official update or in-game notice. No complete permanent base-stage unlock table is supplied by the launch documentation.
Online features are unavailable
Verify the internet connection and account requirements first. On PS5, online features require PlayStation Plus; offline modes do not. This connectivity check is separate from roster and stage availability.
A practical checklist
- Use the official 20-character list to identify launch fighters.
- Do not spend time searching for a permanent unlock quest that the FAQ does not document.
- For teammates three and four, select a four-person team and perform a permitted edge stage-break action, or note the alternate lost-round trigger.
- Treat a stage transition during a fight as an in-match event, not ownership of a newly unlocked arena.
- Use the seven officially named stages as the confirmed launch-stage set, while recognizing that permanent selection requirements are not published in the reviewed materials.
- Purchase the Year 1 pass only for its additional characters, stage, and result poses; it is not required for the launch roster.
- Check the current regional storefront and official updates for prices, DLC names, release timing, and any policy changes.
Bottom line on “unlocking everything”
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls separates roster ownership from match access. The 20 launch characters are documented as playable, while the third and fourth members of a selected team are revealed during a fight through a qualifying stage break or a lost round. The official pages name Asgard, Marvel’s New York (Night), Wakanda, Marvel’s New York (Day), Savage Land, X-Mansion, and Knowhere, but do not establish a universal permanent unlock route for those base-game stages. Use current in-game notices and official updates for any later change rather than relying on an invented campaign requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to beat Episode Mode to unlock the 20 launch characters?
No documented requirement says that Episode Mode, a difficulty level, a number of wins, or another progression task unlocks the launch roster. The official FAQ lists all 20 characters as playable at launch.
How do I get my third and fourth characters during a match?
Select a four-character team, then trigger a qualifying stage break near the edge. The FAQ cites certain attacks or throws, selected Skill attacks, and a successful light-route Link Attack. Losing a round is the other stated trigger. This access lasts for the match and is not permanent.
Does a stage transition permanently unlock the next arena?
No. A stage break moves the current fight to another section or creates a wall splat. It does not add a stage to your account or prove that the arena has a permanent progression requirement.
What stages are officially named?
The official PlayStation page names Asgard, Marvel’s New York (Night), Wakanda, Marvel’s New York (Day), Savage Land, X-Mansion, and Knowhere. The reviewed official pages do not publish a complete permanent unlock condition for each one.
Is the Year 1 Character and Stage Pass required for the launch roster?
No. The pass is separate downloadable content containing four additional characters, one additional stage, and result poses for the 20 base characters. The current US PlayStation page lists it at $34.99 and includes it with Digital Deluxe and Ultimate editions.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I need PlayStation Plus or an arcade stick to unlock content?
No. Offline PS5 content does not require PlayStation Plus, and arcade sticks or leverless controllers are optional. PS5 online features do require PlayStation Plus, but that subscription is a network-access condition rather than a roster or stage unlock.
The Bottom Line
The launch FAQ lists 20 playable characters, not 20 campaign rewards. Only the third and fourth teammates in a four-character team have a documented match-specific access delay: trigger a qualifying edge stage break or lose a round. Seven stages are named officially, but no complete permanent stage-unlock route is published. Treat the Year 1 pass as paid DLC, not as a key for the base roster, and check current in-game notices for later changes.
