If Windows says a file is in use, IObit Unlocker can try to release it and then unlock, delete, rename, move, or copy it. Use the tool only when a process is actually holding the file: “Access is denied” can also result from permissions or Windows system protection, which an unlock utility may not fix. Start by identifying the process and closing the app normally; use forced termination only after saving work and checking what the process does.
What IObit Unlocker does—and what it may not fix
IObit describes Unlocker as a Windows utility for releasing files or folders occupied by a program or user. Its documented actions include Unlock, Unlock & Delete, Unlock & Rename, Unlock & Move, and Unlock & Copy. The guide allows users to add items or drag and drop them. IObit’s Quick Start Guide explains these workflows.
A lock is only one possible reason Windows may refuse a file operation. If the issue is an account permission, a protected system file, or another restriction, releasing a process lock may not help. The available product documentation does not promise to resolve every “Access is denied,” “sharing violation,” or “file is in use” message, nor does it report an independent success rate.
How to use IObit Unlocker
- Get the utility and check compatibility. IObit’s product page lists version 1.3.0, a 2.13 MB download, and Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP compatibility. These are vendor-published details, not independent verification; check the current product page and installer for the latest availability and requirements.
- Close the application that may be using the item. Save open work first, then exit the relevant program normally. This avoids interrupting an active operation where possible.
- Add the file or folder. Use the guide’s add-item workflow, or drag and drop the target into the utility. For multiple targets, select the items and apply the intended action.
- Choose the least disruptive action that meets your goal. Choose Unlock to release the item, or use Unlock & Delete, Unlock & Rename, Unlock & Move, or Unlock & Copy to combine unlocking with the corresponding file operation.
- Escalate cautiously if normal unlocking fails. IObit says Forced Mode terminates related processes. Identify those processes and save work before using it; terminating a process can interrupt its work, and the documentation does not establish that every forced operation will succeed.
Should you use Forced Mode?
Forced Mode is the consequential part of the workflow: IObit’s guide states, “Forced Mode will terminate all related processes.” That can close an application or interrupt work that has not been saved. Do not use it on an unfamiliar process simply because the file operation failed. If you cannot identify the process or determine whether its work is safe to stop, leave it running and investigate the cause of the access denial instead.

Identify the process with Microsoft PowerToys File Locksmith
If you want to find out what is using a file before deciding whether to stop it, Microsoft PowerToys includes File Locksmith. From File Explorer, use the file or directory’s context menu to check which processes are using it. The tool displays accessible processes and provides an End task action. Microsoft describes it as: “File Locksmith Check which files are in use and by which processes from the File Explorer context menu.” See Microsoft’s File Locksmith documentation.
File Locksmith may not show processes running under another user account. Microsoft says to restart the utility as administrator to scan all processes. Ending a task can still interrupt that process, so identify it and save relevant work before choosing End task. This workflow emphasizes process identification; IObit’s documented actions include direct unlock-and-move or unlock-and-copy options. That is a difference in workflow, not evidence that one tool performs better.

When to use Windows’ troubleshooting guidance
For certain file and folder problems involving copying, moving, renaming, or deleting, Microsoft offers an official file and folder troubleshooter. It is a troubleshooting route for the scenarios covered by that support article, not a diagnosis for every locked-file case.

IObit’s current product page lists Unlocker as free and publishes version 1.3.0 and the compatibility details above. These are vendor claims that may change; verify the page and installer before downloading. IObit’s separate FAQ includes older operating-system and hardware requirements, so do not treat those figures as current without confirmation from the current product information.
