There is no single unlock code in Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO. In the base game, fighters come from Episode Battle progress, Zeni purchases in the shop, Player Level milestones and selected tournament rewards. Alternate Episode Battle stories use specific choices and fight conditions, so winning a battle normally is not always enough. Open the episode’s battle details, follow the listed requirement, and treat story completion and character unlocking as two related but separate systems.
This guide covers the launch game separately from the optional Super Limit-Breaking NEO downloadable content. Bandai Namco’s launch announcement counted 181 fighters in the base release; that figure does not include later downloadable characters. NEO adds four Episode Battles and 33 playable characters, with platform availability changing by release date.

What Episode Battle is and why its branches matter
Episode Battle is the single-player story mode. You follow the events of Dragon Ball from the viewpoint of eight selected characters, moving between story scenes and playable fights. At turning points, your decision or the result of a battle can divert the campaign from the original storyline.
That structure creates several different goals that are easy to confuse:
#1 Best Overall
- Engage in heart-pounding, high-speed 3D battles that stay true to the anime and video game series
- This game contains breathtaking visuals and authentic combat moves like beam clashes, rush attacks, and movements too quick for the eyes to see
- Step into an arena that reacts to your every action including planet-razing ultimate attacks
- Watch the environment respond with stunning realism, and leave a trail of destruction in your wake as you battle to your heart’s content
- Clearing a standard episode: advancing through the character’s main story.
- Opening an alternate route: making the required choice or meeting a battle condition at a branching point.
- Reaching a different ending or Sparking Episode: completing the route that follows the branch.
- Unlocking a fighter: receiving a story reward or using another unlock system such as the shop.
A route can be complete without granting a character, and a character can be obtainable from the shop even if you have not finished the episode in which that fighter appears. Keep those objectives separate when planning your playthrough.
The official Raditz example
Bandai Namco’s Episode Battle explanation uses Goku’s encounter with Raditz to show how divergence works. At that point, you can cooperate with Piccolo as in the original story or go alone. The choice changes who comes to help rescue Gohan. In that example, defeating Raditz is also required to access the alternate storyline.
The fight is deliberately demanding. A Bandai Namco Entertainment producer explained that making powerful story opponents easy to defeat would weaken the role-playing experience, so difficult encounters are intended to make successful victories and alternate stories feel meaningful. The practical lesson is to read the condition attached to the battle rather than assuming that every branch is a routine win.
All base-game character-unlock routes
Current walkthrough guidance identifies four broad routes. They overlap, but no single route unlocks every fighter and not every character is available through every method.
| Route | What you do | What it can provide | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Episode Battle rewards | Advance or finish specified character episodes. | Some playable fighters and, separately, alternate story content. | Rewards vary by episode; clearing one campaign does not mean the entire roster is awarded. |
| Shop purchases | Spend Zeni earned during play on fighters shown in the in-game shop. | Characters listed for purchase. | Availability depends on the character and your progression; the shop is not a universal replacement for story requirements. |
| Player Level progression | Raise your account’s Player Level by playing the game. | Additional shop inventory as level milestones are reached. | Leveling expands what you can buy; it does not itself prove that a particular fighter is unlocked. |
| Tournament rewards | Win eligible tournaments. | Character rewards for certain events. | Only selected tournaments award fighters, so check the event’s reward information. |
Bandai Namco announced 181 fighters for the launch version in 2024. That is a launch-roster count, not a statement of the total roster after downloadable content. NEO’s 33 additional characters belong to a different release scope.
Episode Battle rewards
Start with Episode Battle if you want the story context as well as the possibility of earning fighters. Complete the required fights in a character’s campaign and check the post-battle reward screen. Some episode completions award playable characters, while other milestones only advance the narrative or open another route.
Do not infer a universal rule such as “finish every episode to unlock everyone.” The reward is character-specific. If a named fighter does not appear as a reward, use the shop and tournament routes instead of replaying the same chapter without checking its reward information.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Shop purchases with Zeni
Zeni is the game’s spendable currency for shop unlocks. You earn it through normal play and then buy fighters that the shop makes available. The shop is useful when you want a particular character without waiting for the corresponding story reward, but the inventory is gated by progression and varies by fighter.

- Authentic Dragon Ball Combat: Harness the destructive power of the strongest fighters ever to appear in DRAGON BALL with faithful recreations of their abilities

Before spending, note the character’s listed cost and any availability message. Keep enough Zeni for the item or fighter you actually want; buying unrelated items first can delay a roster purchase. If a character is absent, raising Player Level may reveal it, or that fighter may require a different route.
Player Level milestones
Player Level is an account-progression system, not a combat statistic for one fighter. Playing battles and other activities raises it. As your level increases, the shop exposes more options. This makes ordinary play a prerequisite for some purchases even when you have enough Zeni.
Use Player Level as a steady unlock track rather than a promise of a specific reward at a specific level. The exact character associated with a milestone should be confirmed in the current shop and character information screens.
Tournament rewards
Tournaments are another way to obtain selected fighters. Enter the event, inspect its reward list and win the required tournament. Because only certain tournaments award characters, a victory in an event with a currency or item reward will not unlock a fighter.
A reliable workflow for unlocking a particular fighter
Use this process whenever you have a named character in mind. It prevents wasted grinding and distinguishes a locked fighter from a locked story route.
- Identify the release scope. Determine whether the fighter belongs to the 181-character launch game or to NEO’s separate downloadable roster. Do not look for a DLC character in the base-game Episode Battle reward list.
- Check Episode Battle first. Look through the relevant character episode and its completion or reward information. If the fighter is listed as a reward, follow that campaign.
- Inspect the shop. Open the character or shop menu and search for the fighter. Record the displayed Zeni cost and any requirement message.
- Raise Player Level through normal play if required. Continue playing until the shop reveals additional inventory. Recheck the character after each meaningful progression milestone.
- Review tournament rewards. Open each relevant tournament’s reward details before entering it. Prioritize events that explicitly list a character.
- Do not confuse an alternate route with an unlock condition. A branch may produce a new ending or Sparking Episode without awarding the fighter you want. Conversely, a shop purchase may unlock the fighter while leaving the branch unfinished.
- Verify the result. After completing a requirement or purchase, confirm the character in the roster and check whether the game marked a route, ending or episode reward separately.
If none of those screens identifies the fighter, avoid assuming that a hidden universal grind exists. The available guidance supports multiple methods but not a complete official character-by-character table. Use the current in-game details or a maintained walkthrough for that exact name.
How to complete alternate Episode Battle routes
Alternate routes are condition-based. At a branch, the game may ask for a dialogue decision, present two approaches, or attach a performance objective to the fight. The official descriptions establish that choices and battle outcomes can diverge from the original story, but they do not publish a complete table of every route condition.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Read the battle details before launching
Open the episode’s battle details and read the stated route requirement. Treat the wording as an objective, not as flavor text. It may require you to defeat an opponent, finish under a stated condition or select a particular response. If the details specify a target, do not substitute a different victory condition such as simply surviving.

- Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero takes the legendary gameplay of the Budokai Tenkaichi series to a whole new level.
- Use the destructive power of the strongest fighters ever competed in Dragon Ball!
- Learn and master an incredible group of playable characters, each with individual skills, transformations and techniques.
Make the indicated story choice
When a dialogue or strategy choice appears, select the option associated with the route you want. Record the choice mentally or in a note if you intend to replay both branches. A decision can change the next fight, the helper who appears, the ending and the availability of later scenes.
Fulfil the fight condition
Enter the battle and play for the listed result. For example, the Goku-Raditz example requires defeating Raditz in order to access its alternate storyline. A normal completion that does not meet the condition can return you to the main path even though the fight is technically won.
Confirm the route outcome
After the battle, check the episode map or completion display. Look for the newly opened route, alternate ending or Sparking Episode rather than relying only on a victory message. If nothing changed, review the battle details and replay with the exact choice and condition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse a named walkthrough only for a named branch
Maintained episode walkthroughs can help verify a specific requirement, such as a particular dialogue choice or performance objective. Treat those instructions as episode- and version-specific. Do not generalize one character’s condition to every campaign, and recheck the current game if a patch or downloadable episode has changed the menu.
Episode Battle completion checklist
For each of the eight playable perspectives, work through the following checklist:
- Play every visible main-story battle in order.
- At each turning point, read the choice and battle-details text before confirming.
- Write down which decision leads to the original-story route and which leads to the divergence.
- For a branch, repeat the fight while satisfying the exact objective, not merely the default win condition.
- Check the episode map for a new route, ending or Sparking Episode.
- Review the reward screen to see whether a fighter was granted.
- Search the shop and tournament reward lists separately for fighters not awarded by the episode.
This checklist also helps diagnose partial completion. A campaign can show a cleared main chapter while its alternate node remains locked because the required condition was missed.

Keep paid downloadable content separate from the original campaign. The base game contains the launch Episode Battle framework and the 181-fighter launch roster. NEO is optional content; it is not required to unlock the base-game characters or complete the original campaigns.
| Content | Base game | Super Limit-Breaking NEO |
|---|---|---|
| Episode Battles | Original campaigns built around eight character perspectives. | Four additional Episode Battles announced with the DLC. |
| Playable characters | 181 fighters announced for launch in 2024. | 33 additional playable characters announced in 2026. |
| Progression mode | Standard game progression, including Player Level, shop and tournaments. | Limit Breaker Journey, a separate solo progression mode. |
| Purchase status | The game itself, in physical or digital editions. | Optional downloadable content purchased separately. |
| Platforms in the launch announcement | Platform edition determines where you play. | PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam; Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 were scheduled for a later date in that announcement. |
Check the current official store page for Switch and Switch 2 availability before buying. The platform schedule in the announcement is time-sensitive and should not be treated as a permanent release-status statement.

What Limit Breaker Journey adds
NEO’s Limit Breaker Journey is a solo progression mode. You choose a character and difficulty, earn experience to raise SP, unlock higher levels by clearing content and spend earned Zeni on items. The official preview described the system from a playtest version, so menu labels, balance and the final progression details may differ from that preview.
Roadmap items are not automatic unlocks
The published roadmap described Tower of Power (Solo) for winter and Tower of Power (Team-up) around spring 2027, along with powered-up Mission 100 and Survival modes. Those were planned milestones in the roadmap, not verified release statuses. Do not tell players that these modes are already available without checking a newer official announcement.
Troubleshooting failed unlocks and locked branches
“I won the fight, but the alternate route did not open.”
Winning may be necessary but insufficient. Reopen the battle details and look for a target, time, survival, dialogue or other stated condition. Replay from the branch point, choose the required option and fulfil the condition in the same attempt.

“The character is not in the shop.”
Check Player Level and the character’s release scope first. Some shop inventory is hidden until level progression, while a DLC fighter will not appear in the base-game shop. If the fighter still is not listed, inspect Episode Battle and tournament rewards for that name.
“I finished an episode but received no fighter.”
Episode completion can reward story progress rather than a playable character. Verify the reward display, then use the shop and tournament routes. Do not replay an already cleared chapter unless its reward or route details show a missing objective.
“The fight is too difficult.”
The demanding difficulty of certain story encounters is intentional. Adjust your approach and retry the condition rather than assuming the route is broken. Because a branch may require a specific victory, an easier but different result may still leave the node locked.
“I cannot find a promised DLC episode.”
Confirm that the DLC is installed on the same platform and account as the base game, then verify the platform’s release status. In particular, the NEO announcement placed Switch and Switch 2 availability later than PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam PC.

What to remember
Unlock the base roster by combining story rewards, Zeni purchases, Player Level progression and tournament victories; use the method shown for the specific fighter. Complete Episode Battle branches by reading the battle details, making the indicated choice and meeting the stated fight condition. The 181-fighter figure applies to launch, while NEO’s four episodes and 33 characters are optional DLC content with platform timing that must be checked separately.
