To unlock Book IV—labelled Book 4 in the game—first collect every story reward in Book 1. From the home screen, open the menu, choose Change Stories, and select Book 4. That unlocks access to the book; its individual chapters then require Story Fragments earned as battle rewards.

Book 4 access and chapter access are two separate unlocks

Fire Emblem Shadows uses two progression gates. The first gate opens Book 4 itself. The second gate opens the chapters inside that book. Completing the first gate does not automatically make every Book 4 chapter playable.

What you want to do What the game requires Where the progress comes from
Unlock access to Book 4 Collect all of Book 1’s story rewards, then use Change Stories on the home-screen menu Book 1 story completion
Open Book 4 chapters Collect Story Fragments Battle rewards
Advance a particular story side Fight battles on that side The light or shadow story you selected

This distinction explains why a player can see Book 4 in the story selector but still find chapters locked.

Step 1: Finish Book 1’s story rewards

The prerequisite is more specific than merely opening Book 1 or playing a few of its stages: Nintendo’s instructions say to collect all of Book 1’s story rewards. The Google Play release note summarizes the same requirement as “Clear Book 1 to access Book 4.” When those descriptions appear to differ, treat the complete story-reward requirement as the precise rule.

#1 Best Overall
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
  • Here, order is maintained by the Church of Seiros from its headquarters at Garreg Mach Monastery, home to the Officers Academy, where you’re invited to teach one of its three mighty houses: The Black Eagles, The Blue Lions, and The Golden Deer.
  • Which house will you choose?
  • As its professor, you must lead your students in class and in tactical RPG battles wrought with strategic, new twists to overcome.

What counts as completion

  • Continue Book 1 until its story rewards have all been collected.
  • Do not assume that reaching a late Book 1 battle, viewing a story scene, or merely selecting another book has satisfied the requirement.
  • If Book 4 is unavailable after you believe Book 1 is complete, check Book 1 again for an unclaimed story reward before troubleshooting the menu.

The published instructions do not give a required number of battles, a time estimate, or a separate level requirement. Do not treat an unofficial battle count as a guaranteed unlock threshold.

Step 2: Use Change Stories from the home screen

After Book 1’s story rewards are collected, the route to the new book is the home-screen story switcher. Follow these steps in order:

  1. Return to the game’s home screen.
  2. Open the home-screen menu.
  3. Select Change Stories.
  4. Choose Book 4. The reader-facing name “Book IV” refers to this same in-game book.
  5. Confirm the selection if the game asks you to do so, then enter the Book 4 story view.

Nintendo describes Change Stories as the option used to unlock and switch to new Books. It is therefore not a battle-stage reward, a character upgrade, or a separate purchase. If the option is absent, the most relevant check is whether every Book 1 story reward has actually been collected.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes - Switch
  • Command Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters like Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude in epic real-time battles
  • Play through three distinct storylines set in the Fire Emblem: Three Houses universe, each with a different ending, from the point of view of a new protagonist, Shez.
  • Combine the action-packed Warriors-style gameplay with the strategy and style of the Fire Emblem series
  • Fight through hordes of enemies with Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters and their distinct abilities
  • Use Fire Emblem series mechanics like the weapons triangle, character classes, crests, and battalions to tailor your strategy

Step 3: Unlock Book 4’s chapters with Story Fragments

Book 4 access and chapter availability are handled differently. Once Book 4 is selected, play battles and collect the Story Fragments awarded for those battles. Those fragments are the stated currency for opening story chapters.

How chapter progression works

  • Story Fragments come from battle rewards.
  • Fragments unlock chapters rather than unlocking the Book 4 selector itself.
  • The official instructions do not state how many fragments a particular chapter costs or how many battles are needed. The amount can therefore not be converted into a reliable battle or minute estimate.

When a chapter remains locked, the relevant action is to keep earning the required battle rewards, not to repeat the Book 1 unlock procedure. The game’s current chapter screen should show which chapter is available after enough progress has been made.

Light and shadow stories: choose the side you want to advance

Book 4 includes both a light story and a shadow story. Battles on a given side advance that side’s corresponding story. Select the side whose chapters you want to progress, then fight battles there to earn the Story Fragments used for chapter unlocks.

Can the same disciple be used on either side?

Yes. The play guide states that any disciple can be used to progress in either story. You do not need a separate disciple roster solely because you changed from the light side to the shadow side.

This gives you a simple choice: use the side you want to read or advance first, while keeping the freedom to use whichever disciple is available to you. The side determines which story advances; disciple eligibility does not restrict you to one side.

What was available at Book 4’s announced release

Nintendo’s announcement dated September 25, 2026 identifies Book 4 as An Island Apart and says that Chapters 1 and 2 were added for both the light and shadow stories. That is a dated release snapshot, not a guarantee that those are the only chapters that will ever exist or that later chapters will be available in every version you install.

Why Book 4 may still appear locked

Book 1 is not fully cleared

The most common explanation is an uncollected Book 1 story reward. Re-enter Book 1 and verify that its story-reward track is complete, rather than relying on memory of having played its battles.

You are looking for a chapter, not the book

After the Change Stories step succeeds, individual chapters can remain unavailable until Story Fragments are earned. Seeing Book 4 in the selector is evidence that the book-access gate has opened; it does not mean every chapter is open.

You are advancing the other story side

Light-side battles advance the light story, while shadow-side battles advance the shadow story. If the chapter you expect is on the opposite side, switch to that side before continuing your battles.

The menu in your build differs

Nintendo’s documented path is the home screen’s Change Stories option. Because menus and chapter availability can change, compare your current labels with that path and verify the game’s present Book 1 and Book 4 status. The available instructions do not establish a separate hidden menu, purchase, device requirement, or specific battle total.

A practical unlock checklist

  • Book 1: all story rewards collected.
  • Home screen: the menu is open.
  • Story switcher: Change Stories selected.
  • Book selection: Book 4 chosen.
  • Chapter progress: Story Fragments earned from battle rewards.
  • Story side: battles fought on the light or shadow side whose story you want to advance.
  • Disciple: any disciple may be used in either story.

What you do not need to unlock Book 4

The documented instructions describe an in-game progression route only. They do not identify a paid unlock, a physical accessory, a special device, a particular disciple, or a fixed number of battles. Avoid guides that present one of those items as a required Book 4 purchase or prerequisite unless the game itself later displays a new requirement.

Book IV unlock sequence in one view

Complete Book 1’s story rewards first. Then, from the home screen, open Change Stories and select Book 4 (An Island Apart). Once inside Book 4, earn Story Fragments through battles to open its chapters, and fight on the light or shadow side that matches the story you want to advance. The September 25, 2026 announcement specifically recorded Chapters 1 and 2 for both sides, while later availability depends on the current game state.
