In Dressmaker, you unlock additional skirt designs and fabric options by completing commissions and building reputation. Once a skirt is available, select it in the sketchbook, assign a material and color to each panel, check the style tags against the client’s request, then cut, sew and assemble every piece before delivery. The game does not currently have a verified public table of exact rank or commission thresholds, and progression can vary by build.
What unlocks skirts and materials?
Progression is tied to successful dressmaking rather than to a single “unlock skirts” menu. Completing dresses and earning reputation gradually opens more fabric patterns and colors, additional dress-style options, higher-tier customers with larger budgets, and more bodice and skirt designs.
No reliable published list maps every named skirt or material to a specific commission, reputation rank or friendship level. If a skirt or fabric is still unavailable in your game, continue completing commissions and meeting their requirements instead of relying on a purported universal level number. The threshold shown in one build may not apply to another.

How the dress is organized
The dress editor is divided into four pattern categories:

A pattern can create one or several physical pieces. Every resulting piece must eventually be placed on the mannequin. A skirt that appears selected in the sketchbook is not enough by itself; all of its cut pieces and seams are part of the completion check.
Version differences to check first
The commonly circulated walkthrough is based on Prototype v0.5.5. It also notes that the full Steam release launched on September 21, 2026. A fan wiki documents version 0.7.0, Build 445, while another guide refers to Build 410. Menu names, controls, progression triggers and scoring can therefore differ.
Use the controls and unlock behavior displayed by your installed build. If a button, category or interaction described below is missing, compare the build number on your title screen or update information before assuming the feature is broken. The workflow is consistent across the documented builds, but exact unlock timing is not established.
How to unlock more skirt designs
- Accept commissions you can complete reliably. Each finished dress contributes to progression through reputation. A failed delivery is less useful than a completed order that satisfies every listed requirement.
- Follow the client’s specification. Style, construction and delivery checks all affect the result. Treat the requested skirt mood, color and other component requirements as mandatory rather than optional decoration.
- Build reputation over multiple commissions. New fabric patterns, colors and dress options appear as reputation rises. Additional bodice and skirt designs are part of this progression, but no reviewed guide gives a universal per-item threshold.
- Recheck the sketchbook after each progression change. Newly available skirts are selected from the skirt category, not from the fabric shop. Materials and colors may unlock separately from the pattern itself.
- Budget for higher-tier clients. Progression also introduces customers with bigger budgets. Their orders may make more expensive materials practical, but the client’s stated requirements still determine whether the finished dress succeeds.
What to do when a design does not appear
Confirm that the order is fully completed and delivered, that the game saved the result, and that you are looking in the sketchbook’s skirt category rather than the fabric inventory. If the option remains absent, it may simply be locked in your build; there is no verified threshold you can safely substitute.
Where to choose a skirt pattern
Open the sketchbook from an active customer request. In the component-selection view, open the Skirt category and choose the available design. Documented examples include simple, pleated and multi-panel skirts. Select the bodice, sleeves and collar in the same session so you can judge the complete silhouette and the client’s requested style before buying fabric.

Patterns may produce different numbers of pieces. A multi-panel skirt, for example, requires you to track each panel through layout, cutting, sewing and mannequin placement. Do not assume that one visible skirt shape represents one physical piece.
How to use different materials on a skirt
Assign fabric and color by panel
- With the skirt selected in the sketchbook, click the individual skirt panel or swatch slot.
- Choose the fabric sample and color for that panel. You can use different choices on separate panels when the design and available swatches permit it.
- Inspect the style tags shown for the combination. Tags documented in the guide include Cute, Elegant and Professional.
- Compare those tags with the customer’s wording before purchasing fabric. A visually attractive combination can still miss the requested mood.
Assigning a material in the sketchbook is a design decision; it does not cut or sew the skirt. You still need enough physical fabric for every panel and must complete the construction stages afterward.

Examples include cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet. Leftover fabric can be reused on later commissions. The fan wiki also records burlap at 0 gold per metre, making it a budget option when its appearance and style tags fit the order. The available material list and prices can change between builds, so treat the in-game shop as the authority for your current save.

Complete skirt workflow: from commission to delivery
1. Accept the request and read every requirement
Start from a customer commission and note the requested style, colors, materials or other requirement lines. These lines are checked at delivery. A dress that looks finished can fail if one requirement was overlooked.
2. Build the design in the sketchbook
Choose a skirt from the skirt category, then select the other dress components. For each skirt panel, assign the intended color and material. Read the style tags before shopping so you do not spend the budget on a combination that conflicts with the customer’s requested mood.

3. Buy or reuse enough fabric
Purchase the required material or use suitable leftovers from your inventory. Plan for every panel produced by the selected pattern, not just the area represented by the final silhouette. Keep the commission budget in view, particularly when choosing costly materials for a multi-panel design.

4. Lay out the pattern pieces
Place each skirt pattern piece on the fabric. Follow the grain-line arrow printed on the piece. The documented walkthrough shows a green outline when placement is acceptable. If the piece is misaligned, reposition it before cutting; grain mistakes can cap the finished quality even when the seams are sewn correctly.
5. Cut every piece
Cut the complete set of skirt pieces and any other selected components. Missing one piece at this stage creates a later assembly problem, especially with designs that produce several panels.
6. Sew every seam
Use the sewing interaction on all required seams. A partially sewn skirt is not considered complete. Check the work area for any seam that remains unprocessed before attempting to finish the dress.
7. Place every piece on the mannequin
Move each sewn piece to the mannequin, including the skirt panels and the pieces created by the bodice, sleeves and collar. The finish control depends on the entire pattern, not only the skirt.

8. Finish and deliver
The Finish Dress button appears when every pattern piece is on the mannequin and every seam is sewn. Finish the dress, then deliver it to the customer. Requirement lines are evaluated at delivery: satisfying all of them succeeds, while missing even one causes the commission to fail.
Choosing a skirt and material for a commission
When several unlocked options are available, evaluate them in this order:

| Cutting and grain behavior | Can each piece be placed with its grain-line arrow correctly aligned? | Misalignment can limit quality before sewing begins. |
| Construction and delivery | Have all pieces and seams been accounted for, and do the final requirement lines match? | The game checks completion and requirements at delivery, not merely visual appearance. |
Simple versus multi-panel skirts
A simple skirt usually gives you fewer pieces to track. A pleated or multi-panel design can offer a different look and more panel-level material choices, but it also increases the number of pieces that must be laid out, cut, sewn and placed. Choose the more complex design only when its style tags and appearance help satisfy the client enough to justify the extra construction checks.
Using leftovers efficiently
After cutting, retain usable leftover fabric for future commissions. Reuse can protect a tight budget, but confirm that the remaining quantity is sufficient for the next pattern and that its color and material produce the needed tags. Do not substitute a leftover merely because it is free if it fails a requirement line.
Why you cannot finish the dress after cutting the skirt
Cutting is only one stage. The finish control is withheld until the game detects both of the following:

- Every pattern piece from the selected bodice, skirt, sleeve and collar is on the mannequin.
- Every required seam is sewn.
Use this diagnostic sequence when Finish Dress is missing:
- Return to the pattern list and count all pieces, including small pieces from sleeves, collars and multi-panel skirts.
- Inspect the sewing area for an unsewn seam on any component.
- Check that each cut piece was actually moved onto the mannequin rather than left on the work surface.
- Verify that the selected pattern did not create an additional panel you overlooked.
- Once all pieces and seams are complete, look for the finish control again.
If the control still does not appear after these checks, reload the commission or compare your controls with the build-specific instructions in your installed version. A version difference can change labels or interaction steps, but it does not remove the underlying requirement to assemble the whole dress.
Quality problems caused by cutting
Correct sewing cannot fully repair a badly laid-out piece. Align the grain-line arrow before cutting and wait for the green placement outline that indicates an acceptable position in the documented walkthrough. When quality is unexpectedly low, review grain alignment as well as seam precision and style matching.

The mannequin view is not the final test. At delivery, the game checks the commission’s requirement lines. Review the original request for the requested skirt style, color, material and mood tags, then confirm the finished combination still matches. A dress can be fully assembled and still fail when one listed requirement is absent.
Build-aware checklist
- Confirm the installed build before following a control label from an older guide.
- Use the sketchbook’s skirt category to select the design.
- Assign material and color to each panel before shopping.
- Check Cute, Elegant, Professional or other displayed tags against the request.
- Budget enough fabric for every generated piece; reuse suitable leftovers where possible.
- Align every grain-line arrow and look for the green placement outline.
- Cut all pieces, sew all seams and place all pieces on the mannequin.
- Use Finish Dress only after the full set is assembled.
- Read the requirement lines once more before delivery.
Following that sequence is the dependable way to use newly unlocked skirts and materials while avoiding the two most common failures: quality loss from incorrect grain placement and an unavailable finish control caused by an unsewn or unplaced piece.
