To unlock secret characters in Vampire Survivors, first obtain the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane, open the Secrets menu, and follow the hint shown for the character you want. Some secrets use a spell entered in that menu; others require an ordinary gameplay condition, and downloadable-content characters can have additional requirements. Because unlocks change between versions, treat the current in-game hint as the authority rather than relying on an old code list.
What you need before secret-character unlocks appear
The main gateway is the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane. The community-maintained Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane page describes the relic as the item that unlocks the Secrets menu and spell access. The same page associates the relic with the Bone Zone and the boss Sketamari.
That route is wiki-sourced rather than an official manual, so use it as a practical route, not as a promise that every platform or build presents the encounter identically. If your Bone Zone, boss behavior, relic placement, or menu does not match, check the stage and collection state in your own game before assuming the save is broken.

Route to the Forbidden Scrolls
- Make sure the Bone Zone is available. The relic’s documented route is tied to this stage. If the stage is not selectable, continue the normal progression needed to reveal it instead of looking for a spell first.
- Enter the Bone Zone and locate Sketamari. The wiki description identifies defeating Sketamari as the way to obtain the Forbidden Scrolls. The exact fight can be easier or harder depending on your character, weapons, and build, so choose a setup that can survive a long stage and deal sustained damage.
- Defeat the boss and collect the relic. Do not leave the stage before checking that the pickup registered. If the menu does not unlock afterward, finish the run normally, return to the main menu, and verify your collection and relic state.
- Open Secrets. Once the relic is recorded, a Secrets entry should be available in the game’s menu. Menu placement and wording can vary with platform, edition, or later patches.
The Secret page on the Vampire Survivors Wiki also mentions an alternate collection-menu method involving the Yellow Sign. Because that is community-maintained information and may depend on version-specific progression, use the in-game menu state to determine whether it applies to your save.

How to use the Secrets menu
Secrets is not simply a list of cheat codes. It is the game’s clue and entry point for hidden content. Select a secret and read the text shown for that character. The clue may describe an action to perform during a run, a weapon or item interaction, or a spell to enter. The clue is more reliable for your installed build than a copied list published for an older release.
Read the hint before trying a code
- Record the character name or portrait attached to the hint.
- Identify whether the wording describes a normal gameplay condition or an alphanumeric spell.
- Note any stage, weapon, item, time, or DLC reference in the hint.
- After completing the condition, return to the character-selection screen and confirm that the character is selectable.
A secret can be visible in the menu without being a spell-based unlock. Do not assume that every blank entry has a code, or that entering a code is always the intended route.
Enter a spell
When a hint calls for a spell, enter it through Secrets rather than in the pause menu or during a run. The community Spell page states that most spells are entered in Secrets and gives examples, including strongestcharacter for Poe Ratcho. That example demonstrates the format and location; it is not evidence that the page contains every current spell or that every character has one.

- Open the Secrets menu after the Forbidden Scrolls have been obtained.
- Choose the spell-entry control shown by your version. The label or button prompt can differ by platform.
- Type the exact characters from the current hint, preserving spelling and avoiding extra spaces.
- Submit the entry and wait for the game’s confirmation or unlock feedback.
- Return to character selection and verify the result before entering another spell.
The Secret page notes that a successfully used character spell cannot simply be entered again for another effect. If the same code appears to do nothing on a second attempt, that behavior is expected according to the community documentation; it does not by itself indicate a faulty keyboard or controller.
Normal conditions versus spell entry
There are two fundamentally different routes to hidden characters. The first is an ordinary gameplay condition: you perform the action described by the hint in a run. The second is a spell: you enter the text in Secrets. Use the distinction below to choose the right next step.

Do not substitute a remembered code for a gameplay condition just because both appear in an online list. Conversely, do not spend a long run trying to reproduce a condition when the current hint clearly provides a spell.

DLC secret characters require an extra check
Downloadable content can add its own progression gates. In a Steam announcement dated October 2025, poncle explained that Ode to Castlevania bonus-character conditions appear in Secrets after the DLC’s main unlocks have been completed: official Steam announcement.
Recommended DLC order
- Install and enable the relevant DLC on the same platform and account as your save.
- Complete the DLC’s main unlock progression rather than searching for bonus characters immediately.
- Return to Secrets and look again for the newly revealed bonus-character conditions.
- Follow each condition exactly as written, using a spell only when the hint presents one.
- Check character selection after each completed condition.
This order matters because a bonus hint may not be exposed until the DLC’s primary unlocks are finished. If you completed the main content but still see no bonus condition, restart the game, confirm that the DLC is enabled, and inspect Secrets again. The announcement establishes the progression order for the referenced DLC; it does not establish that every other expansion uses the same order.
Why old secret-character lists are unreliable
Many pages reproduce a single list of names and codes. Such lists are useful as historical background but are unsafe as a definitive guide. A Steam Community guide titled All the secret characters & cheat codes covers the 1.0-era system: Steam Community guide. A 1.0-era list can omit characters added later, preserve conditions that changed, or describe a menu that no longer matches your build.

A third-party page labeled Everything | Vampire Survivors Secrets reports an update on 2 September 2026 and build 25016043: JustGameGuides secrets page. That date makes it a potentially useful pointer to newer additions, but it remains third-party material. Compare any entry with the hint in your own Secrets menu before acting on it.
No complete, authoritative roster was established that resolves every current character condition, platform difference, and DLC variation. The safest practice is therefore to use external lists to recognize a name, then use the in-game hint to determine the actual requirement.

Troubleshooting secret unlocks
Secrets still does not appear
- Confirm that you actually collected the Forbidden Scrolls rather than merely reaching the Bone Zone.
- Finish the run and return to the title or main menu so the save can register the relic.
- Check the collection and relic screens for the item.
- Restart the game and inspect the menu again.
- If your stage or boss differs from the wiki description, treat that as a version or platform discrepancy and follow the progression shown by your build.
The code is rejected
- Open Secrets directly; entering text elsewhere will not trigger a secret spell.
- Copy the current hint exactly, including repeated letters and word order.
- Remove accidental spaces before submitting.
- Check that you are not using a 1.0-era code for a later build.
- Look for an ordinary condition in the hint; not every secret is spell-based.
The code was accepted but the character is not visible
Return to the character-selection screen rather than assuming the unlock changes the current run. If the character remains unavailable, close and reopen the game, verify that the correct save profile is loaded, and reread the hint. For DLC characters, confirm that the DLC is enabled and that its main unlock progression is complete.

A previously working spell no longer produces a result
The community Secret documentation says a character spell that has already been successfully used cannot simply be entered again for another effect. Check the roster and selection screen first; the absence of a second confirmation may mean the unlock has already been applied.
Version, platform, and evidence limits
Secret-character requirements are version-sensitive. Updates can add characters, move a hint behind DLC progression, or change how a menu is labeled. PC, console, mobile, and bundled editions can also expose different content at different times. A code found in an old guide is not proof that it remains active in your edition.

When sources disagree, prefer the current in-game hint, then an official announcement for the relevant DLC, and only then a version-matched community reference.
Efficient workflow for unlocking a specific character
- Unlock Secrets once. Follow the Forbidden Scrolls route associated with the Bone Zone and Sketamari.
- Open the target entry. Read the exact hint instead of starting with a general code list.
- Classify the requirement. Decide whether it is a run-based condition or a spell.
- Check for DLC gating. If the character belongs to an expansion, complete that expansion’s main unlocks first when the official guidance requires it.
- Perform the action or enter the spell. Use the stage and menu named by the hint, not a remembered alternative.
- Verify the result. Leave the menu, open character selection, and confirm that the character can be chosen.
- Record the build context. If you help another player, include your platform, DLC, and game version so an old condition is not presented as universal.
What not to do
- Do not assume every secret character has a spell.
- Do not treat a 1.0-era guide as a current master list.
- Do not infer that a code listed for one character unlocks another character with a similar name.
- Do not keep re-entering a spell that has already succeeded.
- Do not conclude that a missing DLC hint is a bug before completing the DLC’s main unlock path.
- Do not claim a condition works on every platform unless the current version documents it.

The Bone Zone and Sketamari are the documented community route to the relic; spells are entered in Secrets when the hint calls for one; and DLC bonus conditions may remain hidden until the expansion’s main unlocks are complete. External lists can help identify possibilities, but the hint attached to your own save is the final check.
