What many players call “Last Stand” is officially Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand. It launched on PC through Steam on July 29, 2026. If you already own Company of Heroes 3, update that game and open Final Stand from the existing client; you do not need a separate product or installation. If you do not own Company of Heroes 3, buy Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand on Steam as a standalone game.

After launching, select solo or co-op, choose a faction, and survive escalating waves. A normal run covers 12 waves, while Endless Mode continues beyond that structure. Between waves, you choose temporary units or abilities; between runs, you earn persistent faction perks and work toward cosmetic unlocks.

Why the mode is called Final Stand

The current official name is Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand, not “Last Stand.” The “Last Stand” wording is a useful search term because players may remember older Company of Heroes modes with similar names, but the Steam product page and Relic’s announcements use Final Stand for this Company of Heroes 3 wave-defense experience. Searching for the exact title avoids opening information about an older mode.

Final Stand is a roguelite wave-defense mode. You establish and defend a position while enemy forces become more demanding, then make choices that shape the rest of that run. The mode combines short-term decisions with longer-term faction progression, so a failed run still contributes to future unlocks.

Do you need to own Company of Heroes 3?

Access route What you need Where you play
Existing owner A Steam account that owns Company of Heroes 3 and an up-to-date installation Inside the existing Company of Heroes 3 PC client
New player A purchase of the standalone Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand product Its own PC installation through Steam

Ownership of an earlier Company of Heroes game is not required. Relic’s official FAQ says that existing Company of Heroes 3 owners do not have to install a separate product or restart the game to play Final Stand:

“Players who already own Company of Heroes 3 will not have to install a separate product and will not have to restart their game to play Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand.”

That arrangement is described in Relic’s Final Stand news and FAQ. The standalone Steam listing is the appropriate route if Company of Heroes 3 is not in your library.

How to access Final Stand if you already own Company of Heroes 3

  1. Sign in to the Steam account that owns Company of Heroes 3. The entitlement must be on the account running the client.
  2. Let Steam install the current game update. Final Stand launched alongside Company of Heroes 3 update 2.5.0 on July 29, 2026. Wait for the update to finish before launching.
  3. Open Company of Heroes 3 from your library. Final Stand is delivered through this installation rather than as a second download.
  4. Open the Final Stand activity from the game’s current interface. Relic’s documents establish the access arrangement, but menu labels and placement can change in later patches, so follow the Final Stand entry shown by your build rather than an old screenshot.
  5. Select a play format. The mode supports a solo run and co-op. After that, choose your faction, battleground and difficulty when those choices are presented, then begin the run.

You do not need to complete a campaign, earn an achievement or reach a particular level to make the mode appear. Access is tied to ownership and the updated client; progression starts after you enter Final Stand.

  • Classic Mechanics have been improved with enhanced systems for cover, flanking, combined arms and richer environmental destruction mechanics.
  • Innovative combat like breaching, verticality tactics, and sandbox focused missions will wow veteran Company of Heroes players.
  • Dynamic Campaign Map mechanics introduce a more replayable campaign experience with long-term strategies and unprecedented choice.
  • Full Tactical Pause lets players control the battlefield with time frozen for ultimate precision.

How to access the standalone version

  1. Open Steam on a PC and search for the exact product name, Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand.
  2. Check the product page before purchasing. The official listing is Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand. It is a PC title distributed through Steam.
  3. Purchase and install the standalone product. You do not need to buy Company of Heroes 3 or another older title first.
  4. Launch Final Stand from your Steam library. The standalone installation takes you directly to the mode.
  5. Choose solo or co-op, then select the available faction, map and difficulty for your run.

If Steam shows more than one similarly named Company of Heroes product, use the exact Final Stand listing rather than an older “The Last Stand” reference. Platform information in the official material establishes PC through Steam; it does not establish a console version.

How a Final Stand run works

Choose solo or co-op

You can play alone or with another player. The launch format described by Relic was two-player co-op. A July 30, 2026 hot fix added a Browse Games lobby list, allowing players to search open lobbies or create a public or private game. The lobby flow also lets the host choose a map and difficulty before starting.

To use the browser, open the co-op option in Final Stand, select the Browse Games list if it is available in your build, and either join an open lobby or create one. Use a private game when you want to invite a specific partner; use a public game when you want other players to find the session. The exact button names may move as the client is patched.

Survive escalating waves

The standard objective is to survive 12 enemy waves. Enemy pressure rises as the run progresses, and the mode can introduce bosses and battlefield events that change the immediate problem you must solve. If you prefer a run without the 12-wave endpoint, choose Endless Mode when it is offered.

Company of Heroes 3 (PC) (64-bit)
  • Take command in real-time battles and take on a campaign as a general where every decision counts

Between waves, Final Stand presents randomized units or abilities. These selections are run-specific: they affect the current attempt and are not the same as the permanent faction progression you earn outside a run. Consider each choice in relation to the defense you are building and the threats expected in the next wave, rather than treating the selection as a permanent unlock.

Expect bosses and dynamic events

Boss units and dynamic battlefield events are part of the mode’s launch design. A boss can create a sharper difficulty spike than an ordinary wave, while an event can alter the battlefield or the conditions under which you are defending. Because these elements are not guaranteed to appear in the same order every run, the mode rewards adapting your temporary build instead of repeating one fixed sequence.

Factions, battlegrounds and launch content

The launch description names four playable factions and gives the following content counts:

Launch element Official count or list How to interpret it
Factions US Forces; Wehrmacht; British Forces; Deutsches Afrikakorps Choose one for a run and develop that faction’s progression separately.
Battlegrounds Five Maps available in the launch description; later updates may change the total.
Difficulty levels Eight Higher settings increase the challenge; choose the level shown by your current client.
Boss units 36 Launch-era official count, not a guarantee that the post-launch total remains unchanged.
Dynamic events 18 Launch-era official count; updates can add or alter events.

These figures come from the launch descriptions on the Steam listing and Relic’s official announcements and update notes. They describe the launch-era package, not independently measured totals. Since Final Stand receives updates, check the current in-game selection screens if you need the exact post-patch count.

How progression and faction-skin unlocks work

Separate temporary and persistent progression

Final Stand has two progression layers:

  • Run progression: randomized units and abilities selected after waves remain relevant to that attempt. They shape the current run and do not become permanent simply because you selected them.
  • Faction progression: persistent perks and abilities are earned between runs in faction-specific progression trees. These remain available when you start later attempts with that faction.

This distinction explains why a run can fail without being wasted. The tactical build ends when the attempt ends, while the faction’s longer-term progression continues according to the perk rewards you earn.

Reach 3,000 perk points for a faction cosmetic set

  1. Play Final Stand with the faction you want to develop. Progress is tracked by faction, so points earned for one faction do not satisfy another faction’s threshold.
  2. Accumulate perk points through that faction’s progression. The official FAQ sets the cosmetic threshold at 3,000 perk points for the faction.
  3. Claim the faction cosmetic set when the threshold is reached. The unlock is tied to that faction’s 3,000-point total.
  4. Equip the cosmetic in a supported Company of Heroes 3 mode. Relic says Final Stand cosmetics can be used in Company of Heroes 3 multiplayer PvP, co-op, skirmish and custom games where cosmetics are supported.

The 3,000-point requirement applies to the player faction cosmetic set. Boss-unit cosmetics are not included in that player unlock, so reaching the threshold should not be expected to grant every boss appearance.

Choosing a first run

When solo is the better starting point

Start solo if you want to learn how wave timing, randomized choices, boss encounters and events interact without coordinating another player. It also lets you pause to read each between-wave choice and understand which decisions are temporary for the run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When co-op makes sense

Choose co-op when you want two players to share the defense and divide attention across the battlefield. Use a private lobby for a known partner or a public lobby when you want to search for an open game. The Browse Games addition means you no longer need to rely only on direct invitations to find a session.

How to approach difficulty

Final Stand offers eight launch-era difficulty levels. If you are learning the mode, begin with a setting that lets you reach the between-wave selection screens and observe how the run develops. Increase the difficulty after you understand the temporary-versus-persistent progression distinction and can identify how bosses or events are changing the situation. The exact balance can change with patches, so treat the in-game descriptions as authoritative for your current version.

What is planned for three-player co-op?

As of the October 13, 2026 official announcement, Relic had announced a three-player Final Stand mode for update 3.0, planned for November 5, 2026. The announcement says the mode is intended to work with all battlegrounds and to scale difficulty for the team.

That date is future-dated relative to the launch information and should not be treated as proof that three-player co-op is already available. Until an updated announcement or in-game patch confirms release, plan around the established solo and two-player co-op formats. The latest official announcements are collected in Relic’s Company of Heroes 3 news feed.

Troubleshooting access and progression

Final Stand does not appear in my Company of Heroes 3 client

  • Confirm that Steam is signed in to the account that owns Company of Heroes 3.
  • Allow the Company of Heroes 3 update to finish installing; Final Stand launched with update 2.5.0.
  • Open the current client rather than looking for a separate Final Stand download. Existing owners receive the mode through their Company of Heroes 3 installation.
  • Look for the current Final Stand entry after the update. Menu wording and placement can change in later patches, so do not rely on an old guide’s exact button label.

I bought Final Stand but expected the full Company of Heroes 3 game

The standalone product is the Final Stand experience. The official material establishes it as a standalone PC product and does not say that buying it grants ownership of the broader Company of Heroes 3 package. If your goal is specifically to play Final Stand, launch the product you purchased from your Steam library.

I cannot find a co-op partner

Use the Browse Games lobby list added in the July 30 hot fix. Search open lobbies, or create a public game and select the desired map and difficulty. A private lobby is appropriate when you want to play only with invited players.

I expected three-player co-op but only see two-player options

The launch format was two-player co-op. Three-player support was announced for update 3.0 with a planned November 5, 2026 release date, so it may not be present before that update is actually shipped and installed.

My cosmetic set has not unlocked

  • Check the perk total for the specific faction you are developing; the requirement is 3,000 points for that faction.
  • Do not count boss-unit cosmetics as part of the player faction-set reward. The FAQ specifically excludes them.
  • After unlocking the set, equip it in a Company of Heroes 3 mode that supports cosmetics, such as multiplayer PvP, co-op, skirmish or custom games.

My between-wave choices disappeared after a run

That is expected for run-specific units and abilities. They belong to the attempt in which you selected them. Persistent perks and abilities are the separate faction progression that carries between runs.
