If your Samsung Galaxy says “Network unlock” or asks for a “SIM network unlock PIN,” contact the carrier or retailer that originally supplied the phone. The carrier—not Samsung—sets the eligibility rules and provides or completes the unlock. First check whether the prompt is actually a SIM-card PIN request: that protects the SIM itself and needs a code from the SIM provider, not a handset unlock.
Identify what is locked before you troubleshoot
A carrier or network lock restricts the handset to a particular provider. Samsung says it does not set carrier unlock requirements and directs customers to the original provider or retailer for an unlock. The available process varies by country, carrier, model, and account.
A SIM-card PIN is different: it protects the SIM card. If the phone asks for that PIN, use the code from the SIM provider. Do not guess a PIN or PUK; repeated incorrect entries can require the provider’s PUK to restore access. Samsung UK explains the distinction in its SIM PIN and network unlock guidance.

How to request the carrier unlock
- Find the original seller or carrier. Check your purchase records, old account, or receipt. Samsung recommends contacting the carrier before deactivating old service and activating with a new provider.
- Ask that provider to check eligibility. Confirm whether the device must be paid off, whether the account must be in good standing, whether an activation or service period applies, and whether the device has lost, stolen, or fraud flags. Ask for the policy that applies to your service type and purchase date.
- Submit the request through an official channel. Provide the IMEI only through the provider’s verified process if requested. On some Galaxy versions, it appears under Settings > About phone > Status > IMEI information; menu names vary by model, software, and region. Samsung Gulf describes the IMEI lookup and directs customers to the original carrier or retailer for an unlock code.
- Follow the provider’s instructions. Some older or region-specific phones display a code prompt after you insert another provider’s SIM. Other eligible devices may unlock remotely or automatically. For example, AT&T says eligible Samsung devices may unlock automatically when its requirements are met; T-Mobile says eligible devices that support remote unlock are remotely unlocked within two business days after eligibility. These are carrier-specific processes, not universal Samsung timelines.
- Test with the intended service. Restart the phone with an active SIM from the destination provider, or set up its eSIM as that provider instructs. Samsung recommends inserting the new SIM and restarting to verify the unlock.
- If service still fails, check compatibility separately. Ask the destination provider to confirm that your exact model supports its network bands and features such as VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, and 5G. An unlock removes a carrier restriction; it does not establish that every service feature will work.
Carrier rules are not one universal waiting period
The following are examples of U.S. carrier policies, not rules for every Galaxy or every country. Policies can change, so check the live policy for your purchase date, plan, and account before relying on a waiting period.
| Provider or source | What its guidance says | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T (U.S.) | Its support page generally requires a device to have been purchased more than 60 days ago and to have a zero installment balance. Eligible Samsung devices may unlock automatically if all requirements are met. | Prepaid terms differ; use the policy section for your service type and check current requirements at AT&T’s device unlock page. |
| T-Mobile (U.S.) | Eligible devices that support remote unlock are automatically and remotely unlocked within two business days after becoming eligible. | Postpaid and prepaid conditions differ. Check eligibility and current terms in T-Mobile’s SIM Unlock Policy. |
| Verizon (U.S.) | Its current support page distinguishes devices purchased before January 27, 2026, from later purchases, and describes automatic timing and payment-method conditions. | Because the policy depends on purchase date and plan, consult Verizon’s device unlocking page for your specific device. |
| Samsung | Samsung says carrier requirements are not dictated by Samsung and recommends contacting the carrier. Samsung UK says it does not lock its devices to a particular network and directs customers to the original provider or retailer for a code. | Contact the original provider or seller for your phone’s applicable policy. See Samsung’s guide to moving a Galaxy to a different carrier. |
Do not treat the FCC’s 2024 notice as a blanket guarantee that every phone unlocks after 60 days. FCC 24-77 proposed requiring providers to unlock handsets 60 days after activation, with an exception for a handset the provider determines was purchased through fraud during that period. It is a proposal, not proof of an enacted universal 60-day rule. See the FCC 24-77 notice.

It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).

If the phone still will not connect
- Ask the original provider whether the unlock request is complete and whether it requires any further action on the handset.
- Confirm the destination SIM is active, or that eSIM setup is complete, with the destination provider.
- Check that you have the exact Galaxy model number and ask the destination provider about network bands and supported features.
- If the screen is asking for a SIM PIN or PUK rather than a network unlock code, contact the SIM provider instead of trying more codes.
- If the message is only “No service,” check provider coverage and settings as well as lock status; the symptom can have more than one cause.
Do not rely on a generic unlock-code seller, firmware flash, factory reset, or SIM-eject tool to remove a carrier restriction. Samsung’s guidance points to the original carrier or retailer; a reset or tray tool is not a carrier-unlock method.
When replacing the phone makes more sense
Requesting an unlock for your current Galaxy is usually the lower-hardware-cost path, but it depends on the original provider’s eligibility rules and your account status. If that provider will not unlock it, a replacement bought factory unlocked is an alternative—not a way to unlock the existing handset. Samsung says Galaxy phones bought directly from Samsung.com in the U.S. are factory unlocked; verify the exact model, market, warranty, and seller before purchasing. See Samsung’s information about unlocked Galaxy devices.
