If you recently changed your Samsung Galaxy screen lock and remember the previous pattern, PIN, or password, a supported recovery option may let you regain access without erasing the phone. Otherwise, Samsung’s documented fallback is a factory reset, which deletes data stored on the device and may require the Google account previously used on it during setup. There is no supported SmartThings Find option to remotely remove the pattern while keeping your data.
Try the previous screen lock first
Samsung says eligible Galaxy devices running One UI 6.1 or later can accept the previous PIN, password, or pattern after the screen lock has been changed. The option is intended for a recent change, not a way to bypass a lock you have used for a long time.
- Enter an incorrect pattern at least five times. Samsung India’s guidance says the Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern option then becomes available on supported devices.
- Choose that option and enter the previous screen-lock method carefully.
- If accepted, follow the on-screen prompts to set a new lock.
Samsung India says the previous method is retained for 72 hours after a lock change, can be used once per screen-lock type, and the recovery flow stops allowing attempts after three incorrect entries of the old method. These are Samsung-published limits; availability and wording may vary by model, software, and region. See Samsung India’s guidance on using a previous lock.

If biometric access still works
If fingerprint or face recognition still unlocks the phone, Samsung UK documents a separate case for resetting unlock methods when biometric access is available. Follow the prompts on the device and Samsung’s instructions for your model. This is not a general way to bypass the pattern on a fully locked phone, and access through biometrics does not guarantee that every model or screen-lock change can be resolved this way. Know what a factory reset will do
If you cannot use a supported recovery option, Samsung’s official fallback is a factory reset. Samsung says a factory reset deletes all personal data stored on the device. Data that has not been backed up may therefore be lost; resetting is not a way to recover files from the locked phone.
After reset, Android Factory Reset Protection (FRP) may require the Google account previously registered on the device before setup can continue. Samsung US says FRP is included on Android 5.1 (Lollipop) and later. Some reset flows may also ask for Samsung account credentials. Before proceeding, make sure you can access the relevant accounts and consider whether any available backup can be restored afterward.

Choose a reset route that fits your situation
Use the model-specific button procedure
Samsung’s recovery-mode reset steps differ by Galaxy model and software. Samsung France’s instructions include connecting the phone to a computer by USB before entering recovery mode, but that should not be treated as a universal button sequence. Find the current instructions for your exact model and follow them precisely. If the device asks for account verification after the reset, enter the account previously associated with it; a reset does not remove that requirement. Samsung UK states that remotely unlocking a phone through SmartThings Find is no longer possible. Samsung Find or SmartThings Find may still offer location and remote-management features, including erasing a device, but erase deletes data rather than removing the pattern while preserving it.

Remote erase depends on prior setup and conditions Samsung lists, including the phone being powered on, connected to a network, associated with a Samsung account, and having remote controls enabled. If it is offline, some actions may wait until it reconnects. Check Samsung’s Find My Mobile guidance before relying on this route.

When to contact Samsung
Contact Samsung support or an authorized service center if you cannot use the previous-lock option, cannot complete the model-specific reset procedure, or cannot satisfy Google or Samsung account verification. Samsung’s instructions and menu labels vary across regions, models, and software versions; support can direct you to guidance appropriate to your Galaxy. Avoid treating third-party unlocker software as a Samsung-supported recovery method.
