Unlocking a Samsung phone for LineageOS is a model-specific Samsung Download Mode procedure, not the generic fastboot flashing unlock process used by some other Android devices. First identify the phone’s complete model and regional or carrier variant, confirm that exact variant has a current LineageOS device page, and read that page’s pre-installation instructions. On supported models, the usual sequence is to back up the phone, enable Developer Options and OEM unlocking, enter Samsung Download Mode with the key combination listed for that model, and choose the on-screen option labeled Device unlock mode or Unlock Bootloader.

The exact button sequence, prompts and post-unlock checks differ between Samsung models. The examples below show the pattern used by the official LineageOS instructions for the Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy A21s, but they do not prove that another Samsung phone is supported or unlockable.

Start with the exact Samsung model and variant

A retail name such as “Galaxy S22+” is not enough to choose an installation guide. Samsung sells regional, carrier and hardware variants under similar names, and LineageOS support is listed by the device identifier used by the project. Before changing anything, open Settings > About phone and record the complete model number. Also note the country or carrier configuration and the installed firmware or One UI version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep those details together. If a LineageOS page names a different model identifier, do not assume that its files, key combination or unlock procedure will work on your phone. A model page for one S22+ variant is an example, not a universal S22+ instruction, and an A21s page cannot be substituted for another A-series device.

What you need to establish before proceeding

  • The complete model number shown in About phone, rather than only the marketed Galaxy name.
  • The phone’s sales region and, where relevant, carrier configuration.
  • The current firmware or One UI version.
  • A current LineageOS device page for that exact variant.
  • The firmware requirements, recovery instructions and bootloader steps on that page.

If no current LineageOS page matches the identifier, stop there. The available examples cannot establish that every Samsung phone has official LineageOS support, and a missing OEM-unlock control may indicate that the model, region, carrier configuration or firmware is not eligible.

Read the device-specific LineageOS page

Use the project’s device list to open the installation page for the exact model. The page is the authority for the order of operations, required firmware, hardware-key sequence and recovery or ROM files. It can change as support is updated, so do not rely on a guide written for a similar-looking phone.

Two official pages demonstrate why this check matters:

Example device Unlock flow described by its LineageOS page Important device-specific detail
Galaxy S22+ (g0s) Enable OEM unlock, enter Samsung Download Mode, then select the on-screen action for Device unlock mode or Unlock Bootloader. The page says rooting stock firmware is not required for its preferred recovery installation method and suggests trying another cable or USB port if the Download Mode interaction fails.
Galaxy A21s (a21s) Use OEM unlock and the model’s Download Mode instructions, then follow the page’s later installation steps. After the unlock reset, its instructions tell you to enable Developer Options again and verify that OEM Unlock is still enabled.

Read the whole page before touching the bootloader. The pre-installation section may require a particular stock-firmware build or a specific recovery image. The examples above establish the Samsung workflow, but they do not supply the files or key sequence for another model.

Back up before unlocking

Bootloader unlocking is destructive. The LineageOS installation instructions warn that the process erases user data, so copy anything you need before selecting an unlock command on the phone. Treat the backup as a separate task, not something to do after entering Download Mode.

Save photos, videos, documents, authenticator exports, contacts and application data in a way you can retrieve without the original Samsung installation. The LineageOS documentation cautions that manufacturer backup solutions, including Samsung’s, might not be accessible after you switch to LineageOS. A backup that exists only inside the current stock installation is therefore not sufficient.

  • Get it in black or white to suit your style and device

Pre-unlock checklist

  • Confirm that the model page you are following matches the model number and region you recorded.
  • Export or copy irreplaceable files to a computer or another storage location.
  • Record two-factor-authentication recovery codes and move any required authenticator accounts.
  • Make sure you know the credentials needed to set up the phone again after the wipe.
  • Charge the phone adequately and use a known-good data cable that fits its connector.
  • Download only the recovery, firmware and LineageOS files linked or specified by the exact device page.

Do not start the unlock merely to test whether it works. If the phone turns out to be ineligible, you want to leave its data and stock installation untouched.

Enable Developer Options and OEM unlocking

The Samsung instructions cited for the Galaxy S22+ require Developer Options and the OEM unlock control before entering Download Mode. The labels and their location can vary by One UI release, so use the wording on your model’s LineageOS page rather than assuming a menu from another Galaxy generation.

Open Developer Options

  1. Open Settings > About phone.
  2. Locate the software or build-information entry identified by your device instructions.
  3. Follow the page’s instruction for enabling Developer Options, then return to Settings and open the new Developer options menu.

Do not change unrelated developer settings. The unlock guide needs the OEM-unlock control; enabling options such as USB debugging does not replace it.

Check OEM unlocking

In Developer Options, look for OEM unlocking. Enable it only when the exact LineageOS page instructs you to do so. Read any warning presented by the phone and verify the setting remains enabled before you continue to Download Mode.

If OEM unlocking is absent, disabled or immediately unavailable, do not substitute a command from a Pixel or another Android guide. Record the model, region, carrier configuration and One UI version, then check the current device page and Samsung-specific support information. Unlockability can vary with those factors.

One UI 8 reports require a device-specific check

A July 29, 2025 report from Android Central described cases in which One UI 8 appeared to lack the OEM Unlocking toggle. That report is a reason to verify the precise phone and firmware; it is not evidence that Samsung universally removed bootloader unlocking from every model or region.

Check the installed One UI version and compare the result with the current LineageOS page for your identifier. Do not flash an older firmware solely to make a toggle appear, and do not treat an online report about one model as a verdict on yours. If the official page does not explain how to proceed when OEM unlocking is missing, pause rather than improvising.

Enter Samsung Download Mode

Samsung’s cited LineageOS instructions use Download Mode for the unlock. This is distinct from the fastboot mode used in many other Android phones. The hardware-key sequence can differ by model, generation and whether a USB cable is connected, so copy the sequence from your exact device page instead of using a remembered combination.

Follow the page’s key sequence exactly

  1. Read the model page’s Download Mode section while the phone is still operating normally.
  2. Power down or restart exactly as the page directs.
  3. Connect the phone to the computer when the instructions call for a cable. Use a data-capable cable, not one intended only for charging.
  4. Hold the listed hardware buttons for that model until Samsung’s Download Mode screen appears.
  5. Read every on-screen choice before confirming anything. The S22+ instructions identify the relevant action as Device unlock mode and/or Unlock Bootloader.

The wording on your device may not match the S22+ example. If the screen does not show an unlock action described by the page, stop and recheck the model and instructions; do not select an unrelated Download Mode operation.

Confirm the destructive action

Select the unlock option only after your backup is complete and the model page confirms that it is the intended step. Samsung will warn that user data will be erased. Accepting the prompt starts the reset; there is no non-destructive preview of the unlocked state.

Let the phone finish the wipe and reboot. Disconnecting it during the reset or interrupting a firmware operation can create a different problem from a refused unlock. The device page’s wording takes precedence over a generic tutorial.

Complete the first reboot and post-unlock checks

After the reset, the phone returns to initial setup. Complete only the setup needed to reach the checks and installation steps on the LineageOS page. Do not assume that the first boot proves the process is complete; the page may require a second pass through Developer Options or a specific firmware verification.

Repeat the checks required by your model

The Galaxy A21s instructions explicitly tell you to enable Developer Options again after unlocking and verify that OEM Unlock remains enabled. If your model page includes the same check, perform it before installing recovery. Other models may present a different confirmation, so follow their page rather than copying the A21s sequence.

Once the page confirms the unlocked state, continue with its recovery and LineageOS installation procedure. Recovery installation, firmware flashing and the first LineageOS boot are separate stages; an unlocked bootloader alone does not install LineageOS.

Use the correct computer connection

The computer is used to communicate with the phone while it is in Download Mode and, later, to transfer or flash the files specified by the device page. A practical setup is a short, undamaged USB data cable whose connector matches the phone and a direct computer port.

The Galaxy S22+ instructions specifically suggest trying another cable and another USB port if the Download Mode interaction does not work as expected. Apply that simple check before changing drivers, firmware or commands. Avoid hubs while troubleshooting, and keep the phone and cable still during the confirmation and reset.

If the computer does not react

  • Leave Download Mode, reboot normally and confirm that the cable can transfer data while the phone is running.
  • Try a different known-good data cable and a different USB port, following the S22+ troubleshooting advice.
  • Return to Download Mode using the exact key sequence on the device page.
  • Stop if the page’s unlock prompt never appears; recheck the model identifier and the OEM-unlock requirement instead of trying fastboot commands.

Why generic fastboot instructions are unsafe here

Many Android bootloader guides begin with adb reboot bootloader and fastboot flashing unlock. Those commands describe a workflow for devices that expose a fastboot bootloader interface. The Samsung instructions cited here use Download Mode and an on-screen unlock choice instead. A command copied from another brand’s guide is not a substitute for the Samsung procedure and may leave you in the wrong mode without changing the unlock state.

Likewise, do not add rooting as a preliminary step unless the exact LineageOS page for your phone explicitly requires it. The Galaxy S22+ page states that rooting stock firmware is not necessary for its preferred recovery installation method. That statement applies to the cited method and model, not automatically to every Samsung device.

Common decision points and safe responses

The phone is not listed by LineageOS

Do not proceed on the assumption that a nearby model is equivalent. Official support, firmware requirements and recovery images are device-specific. Keep the phone on its stock installation until a current page matches the exact identifier.

The OEM Unlocking toggle is missing

Check the phone’s region, carrier configuration and One UI version, then reread the current model page. The One UI 8 report is time-sensitive and does not establish a global policy. If the official instructions do not provide a supported path, there is no evidence in this guide for bypassing the restriction.

The Download Mode key combination does not work

Use the sequence printed on the exact model page, including its instructions about whether the USB cable must be connected. Do not apply the S22+ or A21s combination to another Galaxy phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The unlock screen appears but the expected label is different

Compare the complete screen with the wording and screenshots or descriptions on your model page. The S22+ page uses “Device unlock mode” and/or “Unlock Bootloader”; another model may use different wording. If you cannot identify the intended action, cancel and verify the page before confirming a wipe.

The phone reboots but the installation guide no longer matches

Return to the same model page and begin at its post-unlock section. The reset can require Developer Options and OEM Unlock to be enabled again, as the A21s instructions demonstrate. Continue only when the page’s checks pass.

A complete, model-safe sequence

  1. Read Settings > About phone and record the full model number, region or carrier configuration and One UI version.
  2. Open the matching device page in the official LineageOS wiki and read its prerequisites, firmware requirements and unlock section.
  3. Back up all data independently of Samsung’s stock backup environment because unlocking erases the phone and manufacturer backups may not be accessible afterward. The LineageOS documentation’s warning is illustrated on its sunfish installation page.
  4. Prepare a computer and a compatible, data-capable USB cable.
  5. Enable Developer Options and OEM unlocking exactly as the model page describes.
  6. Enter Samsung Download Mode using that page’s hardware-key sequence.
  7. Select the page-approved on-screen unlock action, such as “Device unlock mode” or “Unlock Bootloader,” and confirm the data wipe.
  8. Allow the reset and reboot to finish without disconnecting the phone.
  9. Perform the page’s post-unlock checks, including the A21s requirement to re-enable Developer Options and verify OEM Unlock where applicable.
  10. Install the specified recovery and LineageOS files by following the remainder of the same device page.

What this procedure can and cannot promise

This workflow explains how supported Samsung models are unlocked in the cited LineageOS instructions. It cannot promise that an unspecified Samsung phone is unlockable. Model, region, carrier configuration and firmware can change whether OEM unlocking is offered and which files or buttons are required. The only reliable decision point is the current LineageOS page for the exact identifier, checked against the phone’s installed software.
