Yes. Google documents a Googlebook bootloader-unlock process: enable OEM unlocking in Developer options, enter the recovery screen, then choose Advanced options > Unlock bootloader. It is intended for developers and advanced users installing a custom operating system or testing apps—not most users—and it erases all data and disables device security. Google’s instructions do not list eligible models, so check the guidance and prompts for your particular device before proceeding.
Should you unlock your Googlebook bootloader?
Consider unlocking only if you have a specific development need, such as installing a custom operating-system version or testing an app. Google says most users do not need to unlock their device’s bootloader.
The trade-off is substantial: unlocking erases all data on the device and disables device security. Google also warns that unsupported modifications may cause hardware, software, or security problems and may affect warranty coverage. Those are stated risks, not a claim that every device will be damaged or that every warranty will be voided.
Protect any data you need before starting. Google’s instructions do not prescribe a backup method, so do not assume a particular backup workflow or storage device is supported for this process.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
What to check before starting
- Confirm the device’s instructions. Google’s general help article does not identify eligible models or explain restrictions for managed devices or particular regions. It therefore does not establish that every Googlebook configuration can be unlocked.
- Understand the consequences. The procedure wipes device data and disables device security; unsupported changes can introduce problems and may affect warranty coverage.
- Disconnect attached devices. Before entering recovery, Google directs users to disconnect accessories such as a mouse or external hard drive.
- Use the Googlebook instructions, not a Chromebook guide. Chromebook Developer Mode/debugging and Chromebook Linux instructions describe separate workflows and do not establish that those procedures apply to Googlebook.
How to unlock a Googlebook bootloader
Enable OEM unlocking
- Open Settings > About device.
- Under Device identifiers, select Build number seven times to reveal Developer options.
- Open Settings > System > Advanced > Developer options.
- Turn on OEM unlocking.
Open recovery and unlock
- Disconnect attached devices, including peripherals and external drives.
- Hold Esc + F2, then quickly press and release Power.
- Release the other keys as the screen lights and prompts appear. Follow the recovery-screen prompts.
- Select Advanced options > Unlock bootloader, then follow the on-screen instructions.
These are the steps in Google’s Googlebook bootloader help article. Device-specific instructions or prompts may differ; follow the current help guidance and what your device displays rather than assuming the same key sequence works on every model.
Googlebook unlocking is not Chromebook Developer Mode or Linux
Google’s Chromebook debugging instructions describe a different workflow involving features such as removing rootfs verification, enabling SSH access, and USB boot. They are not an alternative set of Googlebook bootloader-unlock steps. Read Google’s Chromebook debugging instructions only if you are working with a Chromebook.

Likewise, Chromebook’s built-in Linux development environment provides a Debian environment for command-line tools and development. It is distinct from unlocking a Googlebook bootloader and does not establish that Googlebook offers the same feature. If your goal is simply to use Linux tools on a Chromebook, see Google’s Chromebook Linux instructions.

No root method is established by Google’s bootloader instructions. A 9to5Google report published October 5, 2026, described Googlebook as Android-based and reported that Magisk support was in the works, but that dated report is not a Google promise or an official, current rooting guide. Google’s unlock article does not mention Magisk. Unlocking the bootloader alone should not be treated as proof that a working or supported root procedure is available.
