If two people’s details appear together as one contact on your iPhone, you likely need to unlink contact cards—not delete or “unmerge” a record. Apple says linked contacts remain separate cards; they are displayed together as a unified contact. The current iPhone guide reviewed here explains linking cards but does not document a way to unlink one individual card on iPhone. Apple does document that action in Contacts on Mac.

What “unmerge” means in Apple Contacts

Apple calls the underlying records contact cards. When cards from different accounts are linked, they appear together as one unified contact, so the person shows up only once in All Contacts. Apple Support’s iPhone guide to duplicate contacts puts it plainly: “When you link contacts, those contacts aren’t merged.” Unlinking separates how the cards are displayed; it is not the same as deleting a contact.

Unlink an individual contact card using a Mac

Apple’s documented procedure for separating linked cards is in Contacts on Mac:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Contacts on your Mac and select the unified contact.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Click Remove next to the account card you want to separate. Repeat for any other card you want to unlink.

Apple says removing an account card this way unlinks it from the unified contact and removes only cards belonging to that account. The remaining linked card or cards stay associated with each other. See Apple’s Mac Contacts instructions for linking contacts.

What you can do on iPhone without a Mac

The reviewed current iPhone guide does not provide an individual-card unlink control. iPhone does offer account-level controls, but they affect contacts from an entire account rather than separating one card.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts.
  3. Select the relevant account. Turning off Contacts stops that account’s contacts from appearing on the iPhone; removing the account removes it from the phone.

These controls are broader than unlinking a single card. Apple says contacts remain in the internet account and on other devices where that account is already configured. For details, see Apple’s guide to adding or removing Contacts accounts on iPhone. If you need to separate just one linked card and have no Mac, the reviewed Apple documentation does not establish an iPhone-only method.

Why you should not delete a contact to separate it

Deleting a contact is not a substitute for unlinking. Apple warns that deleting a contact from an email account permanently deletes it from devices signed in to that account. That can remove the actual record rather than merely changing how linked cards appear. Apple’s contact management and deletion guidance, published February 12, 2026, explains the deletion and sync behavior.
