To remove a Steam game after a free weekend, open Library, right-click the game, choose Manage > Uninstall, and confirm. Then open Steam > Settings > Storage to verify that the game is no longer installed. Before deleting any remaining folders, check whether the game uses Steam Cloud and back up local saves, because uninstalling the game does not guarantee that every save or custom file is removed—or preserved.
Uninstall the game from Steam
This is the normal way to remove one title while leaving Steam, your account, and other games intact. The procedure applies to a game installed in any Steam library folder.
- Open the Steam desktop client and select Library.
- Find the game you installed for the free weekend. Use the library search box if necessary.
- Right-click the game’s name in the left-hand list, or open its library page and use the game’s management menu.
- Choose Manage, then Uninstall.
- Read the confirmation prompt and select Uninstall again.
Steam removes the title’s installed game files from the library location. Your account license, achievements, screenshots stored through Steam, and the game’s store-page access are separate from the local installation. You can download the game again later from your library if the free-weekend offer has ended and you subsequently obtain access to it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore you uninstall: a quick protection check
Most people can uninstall immediately, but a short check prevents the common mistake of removing a save or custom file along with the game. This is especially important if you played for several days and may return after buying the title.

- Note the exact game edition you installed. A base game, test branch, dedicated server, or separate multiplayer client can appear as a different entry.
- Open the game’s store page and look for its Steam Cloud indication. Cloud support is selected by the developer, not guaranteed for every Steam title.
- If progress matters, find the developer’s save-location instructions and copy the relevant folder to another drive or a clearly named backup folder.
- Check Steam’s Downloads view for a queued update or another pending operation. Let cloud synchronization finish before closing Steam.
- Record which Steam library contains the installation if you have more than one drive. The Storage page can show all libraries known to Steam.
These checks do not delay the uninstall significantly, and they separate the safe removal of program files from the separate decision to delete personal data.
Check that the installation is really gone
Do not estimate recovered space from the game’s store-page download size. Installed size varies by title, updates, language packs, optional components, and files created while you played. Verify the actual library state instead.
Use Steam Storage
- Open the Steam client menu and select Steam > Settings.
- Select Storage.
- Choose the drive or Steam library folder where the game was installed.
- Look for the title in the installed-games list. It should no longer be listed as installed.
The Storage page also shows the Steam library folders known to the client. If the title is absent there, Steam has completed the managed uninstall. You can compare the drive’s available-space reading before and after the operation, but the difference will not necessarily equal the game’s advertised size because other files may have changed in the meantime.
Check the library folder only when necessary
If Steam no longer lists the game but the drive still appears full, open the relevant library folder in your operating system’s file manager and look for a folder named for the game or its app identifier. Do not delete random folders from steamapps based only on their names. A folder may contain another title, shared content, workshop material, or files that Steam still expects.
Steam’s own Storage view is the safer first check. Manual deletion is appropriate only when you can identify a leftover as belonging to the removed title and you have already protected any saves or custom content you need.
What the uninstall removes—and what it may leave
The command removes the managed installation that Steam tracks in the selected library. It is not a universal “erase everything related to this game” command. User data can be stored in a different directory, and the developer determines which files are included in Steam Cloud synchronization.
That distinction explains why two apparently identical uninstallations can produce different results. One game may keep a small profile in your user folder; another may store saves, screenshots, settings, logs, or mods in several locations. Automatic updates and custom content can also change disk usage independently of the core installation.

Do not treat a remaining folder as proof that Steam failed. First identify what it contains. Keep files that hold progress or settings, and remove only leftovers you can positively associate with the title and no longer need.
Protect saves before removing leftovers
Uninstalling the game and deleting its remaining data are different decisions. The installed program can be removed while a save remains elsewhere, and a save can be lost if you manually remove a separate data folder.
Steam Cloud is optional and game-specific
Steam Cloud can synchronize saves and other user data, but support is not automatic for every game. The developer decides whether a title supports Steam Cloud and which files it synchronizes. Even when Cloud is enabled, files outside the configured synchronization rules remain local.
Before deleting folders outside the game’s installation directory:

- Read the developer’s support guidance for save locations and synchronization behavior.
- Allow any pending cloud synchronization to finish before closing Steam.
- If the save matters, make a separate copy rather than relying only on synchronization.
A Cloud-enabled game can still have local settings, screenshots, mods, profiles, or other data that is not part of the synchronized set. Treat Cloud as a feature with a defined file list, not as a guarantee that every personal file is backed up.
Local saves may be outside the Steam folder
Steam Support identifies DocumentsMy Games on Windows as a common location for saves and profiles from third-party games that do not use Steam Cloud. It also notes that each developer chooses the actual path. Other locations can include a game-specific folder under your user profile or another directory named in the developer’s instructions.
If you want to keep progress, copy the relevant save folder to another drive or a clearly named backup folder before removing anything manually. Preserve the original folder structure and file names. Do not assume that a folder with the game’s name contains only disposable files; it may hold saves, configuration, logs, screenshots, or custom content together.

Workshop items and custom content can remain
Downloaded workshop items, mods, reshade files, and other custom content may not be removed in exactly the same way as the core installation. Their locations and cleanup behavior vary by game and by how the content was installed. Keep anything you may use after reinstalling, and consult the game developer’s instructions before deleting a user-data directory.

Uninstalling is not the only way to clear space on a particular drive. Steam can move an installed game to another library folder through the Storage settings. Moving keeps the installation available, while uninstalling removes the managed game files.
| Choice | What happens | When it fits | What to check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall | Steam removes the game installation from its current library. | You do not need the installed files now and want the most direct way to reclaim that library’s space. | Back up local saves or other data that lives outside the installation. |
| Move | Steam transfers the installed game to another Steam library folder. | You want to free space on one drive but still want the game ready to launch. | Confirm that another suitable library exists and has enough free capacity. |
Move a game to another Steam library
- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Select the library containing the game.
- Use the selection control for the game and choose the option to move it.
- Select another Steam library folder, confirm the transfer, and wait for Steam to finish.
The exact controls can vary with Steam client updates, but the Storage page is the location Valve provides for managing library folders and moving installed titles. Moving does not create free space overall; it changes which drive holds the files. You need a second library with adequate capacity.
Steam cautions against using an external hard drive for Steam and its games because connection and performance problems can affect play. A permanently installed internal drive or a reliably connected supported drive is a safer choice than treating a removable disk as the default library location.
Why the drive may not show all the recovered space
Removing one installation does not freeze every other source of disk use. Steam identifies automatic updates, saved games, and custom content as factors that can change the amount of space associated with a game. The following checks help separate a successful uninstall from unrelated disk usage.
Recommended Free Tools
The game is still listed as installed
- Return to Settings > Storage and select each library folder, not just the default drive.
- Confirm that you uninstalled the correct edition or duplicate entry. Some games have separate base-game, test, or dedicated-server installations.
- Restart Steam if the library display has not refreshed, then check Storage again.
The game is gone from Steam but files remain
- Look for saves, profiles, mods, workshop content, screenshots, or configuration files outside the managed installation.
- Keep data you may need and remove only files you can positively identify as disposable.
- Use the developer’s support documentation for the title-specific locations; there is no universal Steam folder that contains every save.
Free space changed by a different amount than expected
There is no reliable universal “space recovered per Steam game” figure. The result depends on the title’s actual installed files and on changes made by updates, shader or workshop content, saves, and other applications while you were playing. Use the operating system’s drive reading and Steam Storage as measurements for your own installation rather than a generic estimate.
Steam starts downloading the game again
Check whether a download is queued or an update was scheduled before the uninstall completed. Pause or cancel the pending download from Steam’s Downloads view, then verify the title’s status in Library and Storage. If you intentionally moved the game, Steam may also be validating files instead of downloading the entire installation; let that process finish before judging the final space usage.

Do not confuse uninstalling a game with uninstalling Steam
The Manage > Uninstall command removes one game. Removing the Steam client is a separate, broader operation. Steam warns that uninstalling the client removes installed game content unless you move the steamapps folder elsewhere first. That warning concerns the client and its installation, not the normal removal of a single title.
If your goal is simply to remove the free-weekend game, do not delete the Steam application or the entire steamapps folder. Doing so can remove every installed title and may require you to restore or redownload them. Use the per-game uninstall route instead.
Reinstalling later without losing progress
After uninstalling, the game remains associated with your Steam account history, but access to play it depends on the game’s licensing terms. A free-weekend entitlement may expire, so being able to see the title in your library does not necessarily mean the trial remains playable.
If you later regain access and reinstall:
- Install the game to the same or a new Steam library.
- Start it once, then close it if the developer’s restore instructions require the game to create a user-data folder.
- Restore your backed-up save only to the location specified by the developer.
- If Steam Cloud is enabled, allow synchronization to complete and resolve any conflict carefully; choose the copy with the most recent valid progress rather than blindly overwriting it.
Do not copy an old save into an unrelated game version or edition without checking compatibility. A backup is useful only if you know which title created it and where that title expects to find it.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Deleting the whole library folder: this can remove multiple games, not just the free-weekend title.
- Assuming Cloud covers every file: developers choose the synchronized files, and local profiles or mods may be excluded.
- Using the advertised download size as a promise: updates, optional files, and custom content make actual usage different.
- Moving files in File Explorer instead of Steam: Steam may no longer recognize the installation correctly. Use Storage’s move control.
- Choosing a removable drive without considering reliability: Steam cautions that external drives can create connection and performance problems.
- Deleting a save folder because the game is uninstalled: the folder may be outside the installation and may be the only local copy of your progress.
A safe cleanup checklist
- Open Library and use Manage > Uninstall for the specific game.
- Confirm removal in Settings > Storage.
- Check Steam Cloud support and the developer’s save-location guidance.
- Back up local saves before deleting any folder outside the managed installation.
- Remove only identifiable leftovers such as unwanted custom content.
- Use Storage to move the game instead when you want to keep it installed on another drive.
- Leave the Steam client and other library folders alone unless you deliberately intend to remove them.
What to remember after a free weekend
The fastest supported cleanup is a per-game uninstall from Steam’s Library. Storage settings provide the verification point and also offer a move option when the problem is a crowded drive rather than a game you no longer want installed. Save protection requires a separate check because Cloud coverage and local-file locations are chosen on a game-by-game basis. Treat folders outside the installation as personal data until the developer’s documentation proves otherwise.

How do I free up space after uninstalling a Steam game?
Verify the title is absent from the relevant library in Steam Storage. If space is still used, identify saves, profiles, workshop items, mods, or custom content outside the managed installation before removing anything.
Can I move a Steam game instead of uninstalling it?
Yes. In Steam > Settings > Storage, select the game and move it to another Steam library folder. This frees space on the original drive while keeping the installation available.
Why did I recover less space than the game’s listed size?
The listed download or installation figure is not a universal measurement. Updates, optional components, language files, saves, custom content, and other disk activity can change the result. Use Steam Storage and your operating system’s drive reading.
Is it safe to delete the entire steamapps folder?
No, not for a single-game cleanup. That folder can contain multiple installed titles. Steam’s warning about moving steamapps applies when removing the Steam client, not when uninstalling one game.
Should I use an external hard drive for my Steam library?
Steam cautions that external drives can cause connection and performance problems. A suitable internal or reliably connected drive is a safer choice when moving an installed game.
Why is the game downloading again after I removed it?
Check Steam’s Downloads view for a queued update or pending download, cancel it if appropriate, and verify the title’s status in Library and Storage. A moved game may also be validating files rather than downloading a new installation.
The Bottom Line
Use Library > Manage > Uninstall for the free-weekend title, verify the result in Settings > Storage, and protect local saves before deleting any remaining data. If you still want the game installed, move it to another Steam library instead.
