To remove an installed Steam demo without touching your other games, open Library, right-click the demo, choose Manage, and select Uninstall. Confirm the prompt and Steam will delete that demo’s local files. Steam’s current documentation says an uninstalled demo is also removed from your library automatically (Steam News, 2024).
Use Manage > Remove from account only when you want to remove the demo entitlement itself. That is a separate account cleanup action and is not required to reclaim disk space.
What Steam removes when you uninstall a demo
Uninstalling a demo removes its installed program files from the library location on your computer. The amount of space recovered depends on that particular demo; no universal size figure applies. The action does not uninstall Steam and does not, by itself, remove your other games.
Steam treats local installation and account ownership as different things. The supported uninstall command keeps the client’s library state synchronized instead of leaving Steam to discover that a folder was deleted manually.

Before you begin
- Open the Steam desktop client and make sure you are signed in to the account that installed the demo.
- Identify the demo rather than the full game or another application with a similar name.
- If you care about progress, check how that particular demo handles save files and cloud storage before deleting anything manually. A demo may be configured to share cloud storage with its full game, but this is optional and controlled by the developer.
- Do not select an option that uninstalls Steam itself. Removing the Steam client is a much broader operation than removing one demo.
How to uninstall one Steam demo
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Find the installed demo in your library list. You can use the library search if many titles are installed.
- Right-click the demo’s entry.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Uninstall.
- Read the confirmation dialog and approve the removal.
- Wait for Steam to finish deleting the local content. Do not manually remove the demo folder while this operation is running.
After the uninstall completes, Steam’s documented behavior is to remove that demo from the library automatically. You should not need a second account-removal command merely because the local files are gone.
How to check the space you recovered
Steam’s Settings > Storage page shows the default installation drive and the libraries associated with it. Use this page when you want to inspect where your installed content is located, manage another library location, or check which drive should receive a future installation.
Review a library location
Open Steam’s settings, go to Storage, and select the relevant installation drive or library. The page is intended for managing Steam content by location, so it is useful when demos were installed across more than one drive.
Add another installation path
In Settings > Storage, use the + button to create or add another library path. This lets you choose a different drive for future installations instead of filling the default drive.

Move existing games instead of uninstalling them
Steam also provides a Move feature for existing games. If the goal is to free space on one drive while keeping a large game installed, moving that game to another Steam library is a different solution from deleting its files.
Clean up several demos
There is no need to delete demo directories by hand. Repeat the supported client workflow for each installed demo:
- Go to Library.
- Right-click the next demo.
- Choose Manage > Uninstall.
- Confirm and allow Steam to complete the removal.
Once the selected demos are removed, return to Settings > Storage to review the affected library locations and decide whether another title should be moved or removed.

Uninstalling a demo is generally the more reversible choice: if the demo remains available to your account, you can install it again later. Treat Remove from account as the stronger cleanup step because it changes the entitlement associated with the account.
If the demo still appears in Steam
Normal post-uninstall behavior
According to Steam’s 2024 documentation, a demo is automatically removed from the library when it is uninstalled. First verify that you used Manage > Uninstall on the demo itself and allowed the client to finish.
When you want it gone from the account
If your objective is not just to delete local files but to remove the demo entitlement, right-click the demo, open Manage, and choose Remove from account. This is a separate action from uninstalling and should be selected intentionally.

When the client appears stale
If Steam’s interface still shows outdated library information or download metadata appears damaged, Steam Support recommends clearing the download cache. That process flushes locally cached configuration data and requires you to sign in again afterward. Clearing the cache is a client-repair step; it is not a substitute for the demo’s Uninstall command.

Do not uninstall Steam when you only want to remove a demo
Steam warns that uninstalling the client can remove Steam and all installed game content from the machine. That warning applies to the Windows and Mac guidance as well as Steam’s troubleshooting documentation.
Windows: preserve the steamapps folder if reinstalling Steam
If you are uninstalling Steam on Windows for a genuine client-repair reason and need to keep installed games, Steam says to exit the client and move the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory before uninstalling. The folder contains the installed game content that you are trying to preserve. This is unnecessary for removing a single demo through Manage > Uninstall.
Mac: dragging Steam to the Trash is not a complete uninstall
On Mac, moving the Steam application to the Trash does not remove every part of the installation. Steam identifies Library/Application Support/Steam as part of the installation and advises retaining the SteamApps folder when game data must be preserved. Again, these precautions concern removing the client, not the targeted demo-uninstall workflow.

Deleting the demo’s installed program files is different from deleting save data. Do not manually remove save folders merely because you uninstalled the demo.

Steamworks documents an optional configuration called Share cloud storage with the full app. When a developer enables it, a save made in the demo can be stored in the full game’s cloud storage, allowing progress to carry forward if you later buy the full game. The feature is not universal: its availability depends on the individual demo and full-game configuration.
Before manually deleting saves
- Check the game’s own information or support documentation to determine whether demo and full-game cloud storage are shared.
- Distinguish executable and content files removed by uninstalling from local save files that may be stored separately.
- If you may purchase the full game, avoid deleting local saves until you understand whether they are synchronized with the full application.
Common mistakes and the safe correction
Deleting the folder in File Explorer or Finder first
Manual deletion can leave Steam’s local library information out of sync. Use the client’s Manage > Uninstall command first so Steam records the removal while deleting the content.
Choosing Remove from account just to save space
Account removal is not needed to recover disk space. Uninstall the local installation unless you specifically want to change the demo’s account entitlement.

This can affect every installed game. Stop and use the targeted demo command instead. If Steam itself must be removed, preserve steamapps on Windows or SteamApps within Library/Application Support/Steam on Mac before proceeding.
Deleting save folders as part of cleanup
Demo saves may be usable by a later full-game installation when cloud sharing is enabled. Investigate the individual title’s configuration before removing save data.
Assuming every demo has the same size
Demo storage requirements vary by title. Steam does not publish one universal amount of space that every uninstall will recover, so use Settings > Storage and your operating system’s available-space display to assess the result for your installation.
A safe Steam Next Fest cleanup routine
After installing several trials during Steam Next Fest or another demo event, process them one at a time rather than deleting an entire Steam library directory.

- Open Library and identify demos you no longer intend to play.
- For each one, use Manage > Uninstall and wait for completion.
- Leave any save data alone until you have checked whether the title shares cloud storage with its full game.
- Open Settings > Storage to inspect the library drives and determine where the recovered capacity is available.
- Use Remove from account only for demos whose account entitlements you deliberately want to discard.
- If the interface remains stale, use Steam’s documented download-cache clearing procedure and sign in again when prompted.
